La vuelta a Illinois Parte III. Fargo, ND-Winona MN (and then home).

It was another early day. I had breakfast and checked out before stopping at Babb’s Coffee House for my morning coffee. I loved the Seattle decor and miss my fave US city. (It’s been fifteen years since my last visit…) Fue otro día cuando me desperté pronto. Desayuné, salí del hotel y fui a Babb’s Coffe House para mi cafe matinal. Me encantaron las decoraciones de Seattle. Echo de menos mi ciudad favorita de los EE.UU. (Ya hace 15 años sin visitar Seattle…)

I crossed over to Minnesota and found my way back to I-94, lamenting the lack or my failure to see the Minnesota sign. Along the way to Minneapolis-St. Paul, I counted 113 of the 10,000 lakes that were visible from the freeway. Crucé la frontera a Minnesota y encontré la autovía I-94. Lamenté no haber visto el marcador de “Bienviendo a Minnesota”. Por el camino a Minneapolis-San Pablo, conté 113 de los 10.000 lagos desde la autovía.

My original plan was to see the state capitol in St. Paul before getting coffee at Claddagh Coffee, an Irish-themed coffee house in St. Paul. The roads were full of construction, so I made peace with seeing the capitol from afar. Claddagh Coffee was really cool, and I walked down to the bridge that crosses the Mississippi River. The road to my next stop went along the Mississippi for quite a while. I was excited to arrive in Pepin, Wisconsin and made my way to the Little House Wayside Cabin, the cabin noted author Laura Ingalls Wilder (the Little House on the Prairie books) was born and lived in for a short while. The timeline of the books does not match the actual timeline at all and is a darker timeline…I couldn’t believe how small the cabin was! La carretera a mi próxima parada iba por el Mississippi por un rato. Me emocioné llegar en Pepin, Wisconsin, y fui a la Cabaña de la Casa Pequeña, donde nació Laura Ingalls Wilder (La casa del pradero) y vivió cuando era muy joven. La cronología de los libros no es igual a la verdadera de su vida y es mucho más oscura. ¡No pude creer que la cabaña era tan pequeñita!

I walked along Lake Pepin a bit, which reminded me a lot of Lago di Como in Italy. Ingalls couldn’t capture how beautiful it was, even with storm clouds. Caminé por el Lago Pepin un rato, y me recordaba algo de Lago di Como en Italia. Ingalls no pudo capturar su belleza en sus libros. Era precioso aunque estaba muy nublado.

I then crossed back into Minnesota and made my way to Winona, sticking along the Mississippi River. As a kid, The Judds were my fave singers, and I had always regretted we never made the detour during the 1989 trip out west. I checked in and went exploring, walking along the river and through downtown. Crucé el río a Minnesota otra vez y fui a Winona, siempre a lado del Río Mississippi. Cuando era un niño, The Judds eran mis cantantes preferidas, y siempre lamenté no hacer el desavío a Winona durante nuestro viaje de 1989 al oeste. The clouds were going away, so I decided to climb to the top of Sugar Loaf, a short but steep 2 kilometer (1.2 miles) out-and-back trail that gives stunning views of the city of 25,948. It didn’t give me any problems as an experienced hiker, but less experienced people may have problems, as I passed a lot of people on the way up. Los nubes ya estaban desapareciendo, y decidí subir Sugar Loaf, una ruta corta pero con mucho pendiente de 2 kilómetros ida y vuelta que tiene vistas impresionantes de la ciudad de 25.948 personas. No me daba ningún problemas como suelo hacer senderismo, pero para las personas con poca experiencia, puede dar problemas. Pasé a muchas personas por la subida.

I had dinner at the Winona’s Family Restaurant (take out), which was good. Cené en Winona’s Family Restaurant (comida para llevar), y estaba buena.

The next morning, I woke up early again, had breakfast and stopped at Blooming Grounds Express for coffee on the way out. The remaining six hours or so of the trip was uneventful, and I just made a brief pit stop at Twisted Grounds in Madison. I was glad to get home, but I miss the road and wonder where my next adventure will be. La próxima mañana, me desperté pronto otra vez, desayuné, y paré en Blooming Grounds Express para café antes de irme de Winona. Las últimas seis horas de viaje pasa sin incidencia, y solo paré brevemente en Twisted Grounds en Madison para otro café. Me alegró llegar a casa, pero echo de menos viajar y estoy pensando en adónde iré próximo.

Aventura de Wisconsin 2021. Parte 4. Galena, Illinois.

Today we got up and were out the door around 8 again, our normal departure time. Our first stop was Good Morning America’s choice for best breakfast in the US, the White Gull Inn, home of the cherry French toast, which my boyfriend got. I’m not a fan of either French toast nor cherries (I know, right?) so I got the Hearty Appetite, two eggs, three sausage links, hash browns and toast, and it was great. Neither could eat all of it. We ate in the park near the bay with the waves gently crashing to the shore. Hoy nos despertamos y salimos sobre las 8, como solemos hacer. Nuestra primera parada fue un sitio que un programa estadounidense dijo que era el mejor desayuno en los EE.UU, el White Gull Inn. Ofrece French toast de cereza (parecido a torrijas), y mi chico pidió eso. No me gusta ni torrijas ni cerezas mucho, entonces, pedí el Hearty Appetite: dos huevos, tres salchichas, “croquetas de patata” o hash browns, y tostada. Estaba muy rico. No podemos comer todo. Comimos en el parque cerca de la bahía con las olas rompiendo a lado.

We then decided to stop at Target in Sturgeon Bay to get a cooler to keep the cheese fresh from yesterday, along with anything we might pick up along the way like this morning’s breakfast. We then stopped at what had to be the world’s most advertised gas station outside of Wall Drug (I presume Wall Drug has one of those too) to pick up some ice, and I got a t-shirt for Door County too. Luego fuimos a target en Sturgeon Bay para comprar una hielera para guardar el queso que compramos ayer, y cualquier cosa que nos comprampos por el camino, como el desayuno. Luego hicimos una parada en lo que creo que es la gasolinera con más publicidad fuera de Wall Drug (creo que Wall Drug tiene que tener una también, ¿no?) para comprar hielo, y me compré una camiseta de Door County también.

We stopped in Appleton at a coffee place, Copper Rock, which was okay, and I watched Friday Night Lightsand read Black House along the way. The scenery got more and more boring. We stopped at Finca Coffee in Madison, which we both liked. Hicimos otra parada en Appleton para probar una cafetería, Copper Rock, que no estaba mal. Vi Friday Night Lights y leí Black House por el camino. El paisaje estaba más y más aburrido. Luego hicimos parada en Finca Coffee en Madison, lo cual nos gustó a ambos.

The hotel in Galena is okay. If it wasn’t the precipice of Delta, I’d be swimming right now for sure. They have a lot of moose decorations. Stoney Creek is the name of the Inn. We rested a bit before exploring Main Street, which has a lot of interesting shops and bars. I climbed the stairs to the church while my boyfriend went to a root beer shop. I ended up getting back and going in, and he was talking to the people about how we continued to wear masks despite being vaccinated and the owners agreed we were being intelligent. I got a diet root beer. We then walked across the river and got some more pictures. El hotel, Stoney Creek, en Galena está bien. Si no fuera por el Covid Delta, estaría nadando ahora mismo. Hay muchas decoraciones con alces. Nos descansamos antes de explorar la Gran Vía (Main Street). Tiene muchas tiendas y muchos bares interesantes. Subí las escaleras hasta la iglesia mientras mi chico fue a una tienda de cerveza de raíz (¿se llama así de verdad?). Llegué pronto y entré, y estaba hablando con los dueños sobre el hecho que nos llevamos mascarillas aunque nos hemos vacunado. Nos dijo que somos inteligentes. Pedí una root beer light. Cruzamos el río para hacer más fotos del pueblo.

After that, we decided to go to the Fenelon Place Elevator Company (“The World’s Shortest Train Ride). Después, fuimos a Fenelon Place Elevator Company para “El viaje de tren más corto del mundo”.

This morning we got up early so we could catch the 9:00 ferry. I stopped at the coffee place next door, Brew, right before a line of people arrived. I also had to get breakfast as there was none at the hotel, and it was okay. Esta mañana nos despertamos pronto para coger el ferry a las 9 de la mañana. Antes, fui a la cafetería a lado, Brew, justo antes de una cola larga de personas llegó. También tenía que comprar desayuno como el hotel no lo ofrece, y no estaba mal.

The road to the ferry port is very curvy. La carraterra hasta el puerto del ferry es muy sinuosa.

We took the truck on the ferry to Washington Island, which was an adventure. I was anxious, but standing near the truck and watching the water go by soothed my nervous soul. We drove straight to Jackson Harbour to catch the 10:00 ferry, and there were a ton of people. That ferry only takes 10 minutes and is a much smaller boat (no motorized vehicles are allowed on Rock Island. Condujimos el camión al ferry, y fue una aventura. Estaba nervioso, pero salí del camión y vi el agua pasar por mis ojos me tranquilizó. Fuimos directamente a Jackson Harbor para coger otro ferry a las 10.00, y había muchas personas. Este ferry solo tardó unos 10 minutos y es mucho más pequeño (no se permite vehículos en Rock Island (Isla Roca).

We took off to the lighthouse, and the crowds thankfully thinned. It was a beautiful hike with hills and forest and always near the lake. We skipped the lighthouse tour as tiny place, no one else had masks and I’m not dealing with Covid Delta despite my vaccinated status, so we continued on the hike to see the beautiful island. Fuimos primero al faro, y ya no había tanta gente. Era una ruta preciosa con colinas y bosque, y siempre estaba cerca del Lago Michigan. No hicimos el tour del faro porque era un sitio pequeño, nadie (salvo nosotros) tenía mascarillas, y no quiero arreisgar Covid Delta aunque estoy vacunado. Continúamos por la senda para ver la isla bonita.

It was exactly what I needed. Era justo lo que necesitaba.

We took the shortcut so we could catch the 12:15 ferry back to Washington Island. I missed hiking and public transport. Tomamos un atajo para llegar para coger el ferry a las 12.15 a Washington Isla. Echaba de menos hacer senderismo e incluso transporte público.

On Washington Island, we drove to the Mountain Park lookout, which was closed due to structural issues. Better safe than sorry, but I would have liked to have seen it. We saw the Icelandic Church Stavkirke, which we ended up having to come back to as the Cherry Train had just stopped there and it was crowded. We nearly had the place to ourselves for the second visit. En Washington Isla, fuimos al mirador Mountain Park, pero estaba cerrado por problemas estructurales. Mejor seguro que arrepentirlo, pero estaría bien para verlo. Vimos la iglesia islandesa Stavkirke. El tren de cereza acabó de parar allí, entonces tuvimos que volver y estábamos solos para la segunda visita.

We tried driving to the coffee shop, but it was closed Mondays as a lot of places on the island turned out to be. We ended up driving out to the log cabin museum (closed but at least outside) and the farm museum (we just wanted pictures) and the Schoolhouse Beach, which was so crowded we drove right out. We ended up stopping at a sweets place for coffee and then tried a restaurant to get cherry pie. It was closed. I went to the gift shop across the street. Closed. Intentamos ir a una cafetería, pero estaba cerrado los lunes, como muchos sitios en la isla. Al final fuimos al museo de cabaña de madera y el museo de granjas (ambos estaban cerrados, pero solo queríamos hacer fotos) y la Playa Schoolhouse. Había demasiada gente allí y no paramos. Fuimos a una panadería de dulces para café. Un restaurante con tarta de cereza estaba cerrado. La tienda de regalos enfrente también estaba cerrado.

I don’t mind places closing on Monday’s, but usually there is more warning about it (and it’s usually museums…restaurants and gift shops closing during high tourist season?), so we were unprepared. No me importa que las empresas se cierren los lunes, pero normalmente hay más aviso (y usualmente son los museos. Los restaurantes y las tiendas de regalo no suelen cerrar durante la temporada alta.) Por eso, no estábamos preparados.

We ended up deciding to go back to the mainland to try our luck there and got in line at the ferrys when I saw a pizza place that was open. I surprised El Chico with a slice of pizza, and it was a great lunch. Decidimos volver para buscar algo para comer allí. Hicimos cola para el ferry cuando vi una pizzaría que estaba abierta. Le soprendí a mi chico con un trozo de pizza, y era una buena comida.

We crossed the Porte des Morts on the ferry again and I got to get some post cards at a gift shop in Gills Rock. We went to a cherry market near the hotel before resting. I walked across and read on the beach some (Black House by Stephen King and Peter Straub), and we are now trying to call in an order at Mink River Basin as I write. Cruzamos otra vez el Porte des Morts en el ferry otra vez, y compré algunos postales en una tienda de regalos en Gills Rock. Fuimos a un mercado de cerezas cerca del hotel antes de descansar. Crucé la calle para leer en la playa (Casa negra de Stephen King y Peter Straub), y ahora estamos intentando pedir de Mink River Basin mientras escribo.

Yesterday morning we got up and left the hotel just after 8. I walked to the coffee place just down the street, the Daily Buzz, and walked back to the hotel before leaving. Ayer nos despertamos y nos marchamos del hotel justo después de las 8. Caminé a la cafetería que estaba cerca al hotel, el Daily Buzz, y volví al hotel antes de salir.

Our first stop was the Bay Shore Park where I got out to take some pictures of Green Bay. There were a lot of trucks in the parking lot. La primera parada fue el Parque Orilla de la Bahía, donde hice algunas fotas de Green Bay (la Bahía verde). Había muchos camiones en el parking.

Next up was Algoma to see the lighthouse. I got Nanook out to take a picture of him and the lighthouse in memory of my mom, and we walked around town. There was a black lab playing in the lake, and he eventually saw the duck I had warned to not swim anywhere near the dog. The duck didn’t listen to me, so of course the dog went after it once it became aware of it. Próximo fue Algoma para ver el faro. He sacado Nanook del coche para hacer una foto del peluche y el faro en memoria de mi madre, y caminamos por el pueblo. Había un labrador negro jugando en el lago, y eventualmente vio al pato a quien le comenté “no debes nadar cerca al perro”. El pato no me hizo caso, y por eso, cuando el perro lo vi, tenía que perseguirlo.

Later I played with a corgi at a small market in that town. Luego, jugué con un perro de raza corgi en el mercadillo del pueblo.

We next went to try to find the Sturgeon Bay lighthouses. We found the one that the Coast Guard has blocked off with a very small walking path next to a tiny parking lot, so we walked out the water break and found another lighthouse. Luego intentamos encontrar los faros de Sturgeon Bay. Encontramos el de la Guardía Costera estadounidense, lo cual está bloqueado con solo un sendero pequeño a lado de un aparcamiento pequeñito. We stopped at A Bit of Coffee, which had great views of the lake, before driving around Bailey’s Harbor a lot. We couldn’t find one lighthouse, another one I thought was just a replica of one, and the third had no parking to even get out to take pictures. We were sort of interested in touring the Cana Island lighthouse, but it was just so packed that we decided against it. Paramos en el café A Bit of Coffee, que tenía vistas preciosas del lago, antes de explorar Bailey’s Harbor desde el coche. Había un faro que no encontramos, otros que pensé que era una réplica pero era el verdadero, y el tercer no tenía estacionamiento y ni podemos bajarnos del coche para sacar fotos. We drove out to a farm which I thought was a market, and we ended up buying cherry salsa and cheese because we felt awkward. They were very proud of their walk-in freezer though. Fuimos a una finca y granja (las dos) que pensaba yo que era un mercado, y compramos salsa mexicana de cereza y queso porque nos sentimos incómodos. A los dependientes les gustaba su congelador, tan grande que se puede caminar dentro de ello.

We drove back to Bailey’s Harbor, which was packed. We decided on ice cream for lunch without even realizing it was National Ice Cream Day. The market was packing up for the day, but I at least met a chocolate lab and a black Lab named Galway (I was wearing my Ireland t-shirt. Their owner commented on it, and another person commented on it later at the beach next to the hotel). Volvimos a Bailey’s Harbor y estaba a tope de gente. Comimos helado sin darnos cuenta que fue el Día Nacional de Helado. El mercado estaba cerrando por el día, pero conocí a un labrador de chocolate y otro de negro que se llamaba Galway (este día me viste en mi camiseta de Irelanda. Su dueño la comentó, y otra persona también se lo comentó en la playa a lado del hotel.

We drove down to Fish Creek where we found some souviners. The women at the cash register complained about young people and Illinois people and made me write “See ID” on my debit card. Okay then, but I did. The used book store was okay. Fuimos a Fish Creek, donde había regalos. La dependiente se quejó de los jovenes, de las personas de Illinois y me instructó escribir “Ver carnet de identificación” en mi tarjeta de débito. Bueno…lo hice. La tienda de libros de segunda mano no estaba mal.

We got to the hotel about 3, and I got checked in. The Parkside Inn is nice enough for having exterior doors. I walked into “town”, and at the used book shop the retired academic thanked me for wearing my mask. I later found an unmarked anti-Trump resistance section. I stopped at the grocery store for water. We then walked across the street to the beach before trying dinner. Llegamos al hotel sobre las 3, y hice check-in. El Parkside Inn no está mal por tener pasillos exteriores. Caminé al “pueblo”, y en la tienda de libros de segunda mano, el catedrático jubilado me agradeció por llevar una mascarilla. Luego, encontré una sección de resistencia a Trump. Paré en el supermercado pequeño para comprar agua. Luego cruzamos la calle para ir a la playa antes de buscar cena.

Dinner was a disaster. The pub in Bailey’s Harbour didn’t answer the phone, and it turned out they were jam packed. The brewery next door had a DCBC Eats so we just ate there. It was BBQ and decent, but more of a lunch type place with dinner prices. La cena fue un desastre. El pub en Bailey’s Harbor no contestó el teléfono, y era porque había mucha gente. La cervecería a lado tendía un restaurante barbacoa, DCBC Eats, y cenamos allí. Era un sitio mejor para los almuerzos pero tenía precios de cena.

We tried checking out one of the bluffs parks for sunset, but the road took us up a secluded forest road. With night approaching I didn’t want to explore the trails too much so we ended up back at the beach at sunset. Quería ir a un parque con acantilados para ver la puesta de sol, pero la carreterra nos llevó por un bosque aislado. Como ya era casi noche, no quería explorar las sendas, y volvimos a la playa para la puesta de sol.

Aventura de Wisconsin 2021. Part 1.

The time had arrived. La hora había llegado.

It was finally time to get back on the road and do the trip El Chico and I had planned for Spring Break 2020 before Covid changed everything. Por fin, llegó la hora para volver a viajar y hacer el viaje que El Chico y yo tuvimos planeado para las vacaciones de primavera de 2020 antes de que Covid cambió todo.

We had packed plenty of hand sanitizer and masks though. Pero llevamos mucho sanitazante para manos y mascarillas.

Our adventure began on Saturday morning. El Chico had made a last minute decision to drive through Chicago and Milwaukee instead of going around the city and north through Rockford, Illinois and Madison, Wisconsin to save time. Nuestra aventura empezó el sábado por la mañana. El Chico tomó una decisión equivocada y condujo por Chicago y Milwaukee en lugar de ir por Rockford, Illinois y Madison, Wisconsin, para ahorrar tiempo.

Of course, Chicago being Chicago, there was a traffic jam, even at 10 on Saturday morning. Desde luego, Chicago es Chicago, y había un atasco, incluso a las 10 de la mañana de sábado.

As life got in the way and I never finished this, I’ll just be sharing my travel journal entries. Cómo la vida es complicada, nunca terminé de escribir eso, solo voy a compartir mis entradas de mi diario de viaje.

I forgot to bring my travel journal so I guess I’ll just write it up in Word and print it off when I get back. Se me olvidé traer mi diario de viaje. Entonces, voy a escribir eso en Word y luego imprimirlo cuando esté en casa.

We’re finally doing the trip we were supposed to do before Covid cancelled everything in March 2020. Por fin, estamos haciendo el viaje que tuvimos planificado antes de Covid anuló todo en marzo de 2020.

This morning we got up and left around 8. El Chico decided that he would risk the Chicago way. We stopped at the gas station we did in summer 2019 on the way to Chicago…no one was at the cash register so I didn’t get anything inside. Esta mañana nos despertamos y salimos sobre las 8. El Chico decidió arriesgar las autovías de Chicago. Paramos en la misma gasolinera como en el verano de 2019 por el camino a Chicago. No había ningun empleado en la caja, y por eso no compré nada dentro.

The tolls in Chicago are stupid. We don’t have an iPass so we had to go through the cash thing, which was closed, as it’s all paid online now, probably post Covid. Los peajes en Chicago son estúpidos. No tenemos un iPass, entonces, tuvimos que pasar por donde se paga con efectivo. Estaba cerrado, como hay que pagar todo por Internet ahora, problablemente por Covid.

We stopped at the Wisconsin Welcome Center so I could get some more information on Green Bay and Door County, and again at Hillside Coffee House, an amazing little place with friendly baristi just outside of Milwaukee. I read Black House by Stephen King and Peter Straub on the way and watched a pair of episodes of Friday Night Lights. Paramos en la Oficina de Turismo de Wisconsin para obtener más información sobre Green Bay y Door County (Condado Door). También paramos en el Hillside Coffee House, un café chulo con camareros amables justo fuera de Milwaukee. Leí Black House por Stephen King y Peter Staurb por el camino, y vi un par de capítulos de Friday Night Lights.

Our first stop was the National Railway Museum, which was worth the stop, although I’m not sure worth $11. El Chico didn’t want to take the train ride, so we got to see the museum while everyone was on the train. Nuestra primara parada fue el Museo Nacional de Ferrocarriles, que merece la pena. Otra cuestión es si vale $11…El Chico no quería hacer el viaje de tren, entonces, vimos el museo mientras los demás estaban en el tren.

We later stopped at The Attic, a coffee and used book store. I behaved myself. Luego, paramos en The Attic, un café y librería de segunda mano. Me comporté y no compré nada.

We’re staying at St. Brendan’s Inn, an Irish themed place. There is a huge bathtub and the drain for the shower is in the floor like Europe was rumoured to be but very little seen in my experience (I have seen them like this, but not as often as I was lead to believe growing up…)

I walked a bit along the river, and we drove up to a disappointing park called Sunset Beach Park. Um, what beach? Just views of the bay. We couldn’t find the lighthouse either. Caminé un poco por el río. Luego fuimos a un parque decepcionante con el nombre Sunset Beach Park. (Parque de Playa de la Puesta de Sol). ¿Playa? ¿Qué playa? Solo tenía vistas del bahía. Tampoco pudimos encontrar el faro.

Dinner was a disaster. As it was restaurant week, the restaurant downstairs only had a limited menu and didn’t really have anything on it that I’ll eat. I had to settle on a grilled cheese sandwich. At least the “chips” (what the yankees call fries) were good. La cena fue un desastre. Como fue la Semana de Restuarantes, el restuarante de St. Brendan’s solo dispuso de un menú limitado y no tenía nada que puedo comer. Tenía que cenar un sándwich de queso. Por lo menos las patatas estaban ricas.

A sunset stroll along the Fox River and some planning for Door County ended the day. Terminamos el día con un paseo durante atardecer por el Río Fox y planificando el próximo día en el Condado Door.

Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone and my first trip out west (1989).

This trip was designed to avoid Chicago rush hour, and yet I somehow got us stuck in it…but I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. Empezamos el viaje con la intención de evitar el tráfico de Chicago en la hora punta. Sin embargo, sin saber como exactamente, acabamos en la tercera ciudad de EEUU en esta hora, pero me adelanto la historia. 

We left in the morning, in probably the 1989 Corsica, and we had to stop at the Studebaker museum in South Bend, Indiana, for my father. Any trip that went through Indiana required a stop at that museum, which neither my mom nor I really liked. Salimos por la mañana, creo que en la Corsica de 1989, y paramos en el museo Studebaker en South Bend, Indiana (la ciudad de Mayor Pete), para mi padre. Cualquier viaje que pasó por Indiana, tenemos que parar en este museo aunque ni a mi ni a mi madre nos gustaba. 

This put us behind for Chicago. I believe I had to use the restroom somewhere near Chicago, which somehow got us turned around and either missing an exit or taking a wrong turn that would have put us driving through Chicago instead of taking the long way around close to rush hour. We eventually got it sorted. Por eso, fuimos con retraso para evitar Chicago. Creo que tenía que usar el baño cuando estábamos aproximando la ciudad, y después nos perdemos, o por perder una salida o por tomar una salida equivocada que significaba que íbamos a tener que conducir por Chicago en lugar de tomar la ruta larga durante la hora punta. Al final nos encontramos por el camino adecuado. 

We had dinner at a Country Kitchen in Wisconsin. I think we stopped in Rochester, Minnesota for the evening. It may have been Winona, because The Judds were my fave singers then, even if I always preferred Naomi to Wynonna. Cenamos en un Country Kitchen en Wisconsin. Creo que paramos por la noche en Rochester, Minnesota, aunque quizas fuera Winona, porque The Judds era mi grupo favorito en aquel tiempo, aunque siempre prefería Naomi a Wynonna. 

The next day we continued on. I know we stopped at Walnut Grove, Minnesota so my mom could visit the Laura Ingalls Wilder site. However, I don’t remember it at all. Continuamos el próximo día. Sé que paramos en Walnut Grove, Minnesota, para que mi madre pudiera ver el sitio de Laura Ingalls Wilder, aunque no me acuerdo de nada. 

I do remember South Dakota being boring at first before slowly getting more interesting around the Badlands, which I questioned what had done so wrong to be labeled “bad”. I was super excited to stay at the Ramada Inn in Rapid City as the hotel had a swimming pool with a water slide. Pero sí, recuerdo que el estado del Dakota del Sur era muy aburrido en la parte del este, pero cerca de las Badlands (baldías), el paisaje era más interesante. Me pregunté que había hecho las baldías para ser llamado “bad” (malo). Me emocioné mucho porque nos alojamos en el Ramada Inn de Rapid City y el hotel tenía una piscina con un tobogán. 

We saw Mount Rushmore, and I remember all the post cards of the other side of Mt. Rushmore which I found hysterical (I was seven going on eight). I remember hearing about the Crazy Horse monument and wanting to see it even though it had just gotten started. We did stop at either Wind Cave or Black Hills Caverns. My mom and I thought General Hospital was filming the return of Frisco Jones there, and I wanted to see the signature of Kristina Wagner (then Kristina Malandro), but she hadn’t been there. Felicia has always been my fave! Only as an adult did I realize that the “two years ago” meant that it was a different storyline where something happened on the show at Mt. Rushmore that didn’t involve my fave character Felicia Cummings Jones Shore Jones Scorpio-Jones Scorpio. Vimos Monte Rushmore, y recuerdo los postales con el otro lado del monte, que me daba mucha risa (solo tenía siete casi ocho años). También me acuerdo de escuchar sobre el monumento de Crazy Horse. Quería verlo aunque no habían construido mucho. Paramos en o Wind Cave o Black Hills Caverns, unas cuevas por la zona. Mi madre y yo pensamos que estaban rodando el retorno de Frisco Jones en General Hospital allí, y quería ver la firma de actriz Kristina Wagner (en este momento Malandro), pero no había estado ella. Felicia siempre ha sido mi preferida. No fue hasta que fui un adulto cuando me di cuenta que “hace dos años” no significaba que filman la telenovela con dos años de antelación sino que fue otro argumento cuando el programa rodó en Monte Rushmore y mi personaje favorito Felicia Cummings Jones Shore Jones Scorpio-Jones Scorpio no estaba.

I’m not sure if we stayed one or two nights in Rapid City, as I know we also saw some of the Badlands too. Another stop was the infamous Wall Drug, perhaps one of the best marketed places in the world. I remember being there in the evening and not being too impressed. I want to go back there now though. Looking at the map, we had to have done it before reaching Rapid City on the way in. No estoy seguro si nos quedamos una o dos noches en Rapid City, porque recuerdo que también vimos las Baldías también. Otra parada fue la farmacia de infame Wall Drug, uno de los sitios con el mejor marketing en el mundo. Fuimos por la tarde y no me impresionó mucho, aunque ahora me gustaría volver. Cuando miro el mapa, creo que fuimos antes de llegar a Rapid City. 

We drove on through Wyoming on the way to Yellowstone, making a stop at Cody to see the Buffalo Bill Historic Centre. I remember at some point driving up a mountain on a winding road, and wanting to see cowboys. I also liked how it was US Route 20 that went through Yellowstone as my childhood home was also off US 20. I also was shocked at having to wear pants (trousers) instead of shorts as it was only in the 60s (about 17 C). Luego, seguimos a Wyoming para ir a Yellowstone, y paramos en Cody para ver el Centro Histórico de Buffalo Bill. Recuerdo que tuvimos que subir un monte en el coche y la carretera era muy sinuosa, y queremos ver a los cowboys tradicionales. También me encantó como fue la carretera nacional 20 que pasaba por Yellowstone, porque la casa de mi niñez también estaba ubicada por US 20. Me dio un shock tener que llevar pantalones largos en lugar de los pantalones cortos del verano, porque la temperatura solo hacía 17 grados. 

I remember Old Faithful and wanting to see a bear, but we only saw buffalo. We drove through Yellowstone and on into Idaho so we could say we had been to Idaho. We then drove on through Montana. I don’t remember much about Montana other than it being isolated. Recuerdo el Old Faithful (Viejo Fiel) y quería ver un oso, pero solo vimos los búfalos. Condujimos por el parque Yellowstone hasta Idaho solo para poder decir que hemos pisado el estado de Idaho. Luego, seguimos a Montana. No recuerdo nada sobre Montana, solo que fue aislado. 

I vaguely remember North Dakota and being excited to stop in the capital, Bismarck, and I believe we stayed somewhere near Fargo, which is far less interesting than the movie and tv show. I believe it somewhere in North Dakota where we stopped at a prairie dog place to watch the animals play a while. I loved them so. Solo recuerdo un poco Dakota del Norte y estaba emocionado parar en la capital, Bismarck. Creo que nos alojamos en algún sitio cerca de Fargo, que no es tan interesante como la película o serie que lleva su nombre. Creo que fue en Dakota del Norte donde fuimos a un sitio para mirar los perros de las praderas jugar. 

Our next destination was Minneapolis to see a baseball game at the Metrodome. I think we also visited the Children’s Museum. We then went south to Iowa, where I’m more certain of visiting a Children’s Museum. I liked the idea of the Quad Cities. We probably drove a long night home to Ohio. El próximo destino fue Minneapolis para ver un partido de beisbol en el Metrodome. Creo que también visitamos un museo para niños. Luego, condujimos en la dirección sur a Iowa, y estoy cierto visitamos un museo para niños allí. Me gustaba la idea de las Quad Cities. Al final, creo que fue un día largo para volver a Ohio. 

It was a great road trip, but the following summer would be another plane trip to a place I had been dying to see for a while…Fue un viaje genial, pero el próximo verano prometía otro viaje por avión a un lugar donde había deseado visitar mucho durante mucho tiempo.

Milwaukee is a vibrant city of with an estimated population of 595,351 in a metropolitan area of over 2 million people. It’s a short drive from the state capital, Madison. Located on Lake Michigan about two hours north of Chicago, the city dates back to 1846. In addition to the lake, the Milwaukee River runs through downtown. Milwaukee es una ciudad vibrante con una población de 595.351 personas con una población de más de 2 millones de personas en la área metropolitana. No está lejos de la capital del estado, Madison, y está ubicado en Lago Michigan a unos 2 horas al norte de Chicago. Fue fundida en el año 1846. En adición al lago, el Río Milwaukee fluye por el centro de la ciudad. 

My boyfriend and I arrived to Milwaukee around 4. We checked into our hotel, Home 2, and rested a bit before finding a coffee house so I could get some classwork done. This is typical of a graduate student life. The work never ends. However, by getting some research out of the way, I had Sunday and Monday morning freer to explore the city during the day. Mi chico y yo llegamos a Milwaukee sobre las 16. Hicimos check-in en el hotel, Home 2, y descansamos un rato antes de buscar un café porque quería trabajar un poco. Es típico de la vida de un “grad student”. Siempre hay trabajo. Sin embargo, para hacer mi investigación el sábado por la tarde, tenía domingo y lunes más libre para explorar la ciudad durante el día. 

The coffee house we stopped at was part of the Colectivo Coffee Roasters chain located in Milwaukee. There are 21 locations in Milwaukee and Madison. I ended up getting a cute t-shirt of a dog with the word “coffee”, which is totally me as I love dogs and coffee. Fuimos a un café de la cadena de Milwaukee, Colectivo Coffee Roasters. Hay 21 locales en Milwaukee y Madison. Me compré una camiseta guapa de un perro con la palabra “coffee” (café en inglés), que encaja genial conmigo porque me encantan los perros y el café. 

We stopped at a local pizza place whose name I don’t wish to recall because it was that bad. Screaming children and a long wait for a mediocre pizza. Cenamos en una pizzeria local cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme porque era tan mal. Había niños chillando y una espera larga para una pizza mediocre. 

Sunday morning was bright and sunny, however, and after breakfast at the hotel, we went to the Milwaukee Public Market. While not quite as nice as Seattle’s Pike Place Market (and honestly, what market is?), it was a quaint market. I found some Spanish wine for only $10. How I miss my Rioja! Nos despartamos domingo a un día asoleado. Después de desayunar en el hotel, fuimos a Milwaukee Public Market (mercado público). Aunque no es tan bueno como el mercado de Seattle, Pike Place Market (y creo que no existe un mercado tan bueno como ese), era un mercado pintoresco. Encontré una botella de Rioja por solo $10. ¡Como echo de menos Rioja! 

Next we walked along the river despite the cold (It was about -2C/upper 20sF) to the Bronze Fonz. The statue of the Happy Days character is famous and was dressed for St. Patrick’s Day. Luego, paseamos por el río a pesar del frío (hizo unos 2 grados bajo cero) hasta la estatua del Bronze Fronze. Es del personaje de Días felices y era vestido para el día de San Patricio. 

We went up to the North Point Lighthouse and walked around some more, enjoying the views of Lake Michigan. Después, condujimos al Faro de North Point (Punto norte) y caminamos más, disfrutando de las vistas de Lago Michigan. 

After lunch at a local kebab (apparently they’re giros in the US? To me, they’ll always be kebabs!), we went to the hotel for siesta. I’m slowly bringing back proper Spanish customs to the US. Después de comer en un kebab local, volvimos al hotel para echarnos una siesta. Poco a poco, estoy llevando la cultura español a los EEUU. 

Post siesta, we drove up to Port Washington. I was a fan of Step by Step as a child, and I was curious about the town of 11,250 residents. It has a beautiful downtown area, and we ended up having a great dinner at the local Italian restaurant, The Pasta Shoppe. Después de la siesta, fuimos a Port Washington. Como joven, era un fan de Paso a Paso, y tenía curiosidad del pueblo de 11.250 habitantes. El centro es precioso, y fuimos a cenar en el restaurante The Pasta Shoppe. Allí, se come muy bien. 

I woke up Monday morning to realise I had left my scarf and Barcelona jacket at the restaurant. I had bought the scarf my first winter in Spain, so it had meaning for me, and the Barcelona jacket I was wearing under my heavier winter coat for extra warmth was a brand new Christmas present. The restaurant didn’t open until 16, so we visited the St. Josaphat Basilica before exploring the Third Ward and Bay View neighbourhoods. Me desperté el lunes para darme cuenta que había dejado mi bufanda y chaqueta de Barcelona en el restaurante. Compré la bufanda durante mi primer invierno en España, y para mi, es especial. La chaqueta del Barça que llevaba abajo mi abrigo para más calor era nuevo, un regalo de Navidad. El restaurante no abre hasta las 16, entonces, visitamos la Basilica St. Josaphat antes de explorar los barrios del Third Ward y Bay View. 

After heading back up to Port Washington to retrieve my left items, we drove back to Urbana, tired but great after our first weekend getaway together. Después de recoger mis objetos perdidos en Port Washington, volvimos a Urbana, cansados pero bien después de nuestra primera excursión de fin de semana juntos.

Madison, Wisconsin.

Spring break, 2019. Vacaciones de primavera de 2019. 

I wanted to do something, but being a grad student, I don’t have a lot of money. Most places I wanted to go to aren’t great winter places (it was still technically winter) due to snow and such. I realised I had only been through Wisconsin once as a young child and barely remembered it. I told my boyfriend I was thinking about it, and he said he could take a day off from work and make a long weekend of it. Quería hacer algo, pero como soy estudiante de graduado, no disponía de mucho dinero. La mayoría de sitios adonde quiero ir están en el norte donde había bastante nieve y tal aún en marzo. Me di cuenta que solo conocía Wisconsin de pasó cuando tenía 7 años y no lo recordaba bien. Le dije a mi chico que estaba pensándolo, y me dijo que podía pedir un día libre de trabajo y ir conmigo para un fin de semana largo. 

We settled on Madison and Milwaukee. Decidimos en Madison y Milwaukee. 

On Friday afternoon, we drove up to Madison, Wisconsin. Madison is the capital of Wisconsin and has a population of 258, 054. The drive took about four hours. Illinois does not have beautiful scenery, needless to say. Viernes por la tarde, conducimos a Madison, Wisconsin. Madison es la capital del estado y tiene una población de 258,054. Tardamos unas cuatro horas en llegar. Illinois no es conocido por su paisaje interesante, he de decir. 

We avoided the toll road near Rockford, Ill., and I found myself on US Route 20, the road that goes by my childhood home. We eventually took a road north and found ourselves crossing the Wisconsin state line around sunset. Evitamos los peajes de la autopista cerca de Rockford, Ill., y me encontré en la Ruta Nacional 20, que es la misma carretera que pasa la casa de mi juventud. Eventualmente tomamos una carretera hacía el norte y cruzamos la frontera entre Illinois y Wisconsin al atardecer. 

We arrived to Madison around 20.00 and checked into our hotel, a Tru by Hilton that reminded me of Europe’s Ibis Hotels. We went in search for a place to eat, but the Mediterranean restaurant had either closed or never existed. Google Maps isn’t always accurate. So we settled on Chile’s, a restaurant I hadn’t been to in about 13 years. It was good as I remembered. Llegamos a Madison sobre las 20.00 y hicimos check-in en el hotel, Tru by Hilton. Me acordaba de los Hotel Ibis en Europa. Buscamos un restaurante para cenar. O estaba cerrado o Google Maps nos mentió, pero no encontramos el restaurante mediterraneo. Entonces, fuimos a Chile’s, un restaurante donde no había comida desde hace unos 13 años. Estaba tan bueno como lo recordaba. 

Saturday we woke up and explored the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While I loved the views of one of Madison’s lakes from the campus, I prefer my current grad school home of UIUC. We then walked toward the capitol building and visited it. El sábado nos despertamos y fuimos a explorar la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison. Aunque me gustaban las vistas de uno de los lagos de Madison desde la universidad, prefiero donde estudio ahora, la UIUC. 

The Wisconsin State Capitol was completed in 1917 and is the fifth building to house the WI government. Terminaron el Capitolio actual de Wisconsin en 1917 y es el quinto edificio para servir como sede el gobierno de Wisconsin. 

Later, we visited a few of the shops on the street connecting the capitol building to the university and stopped at an Espresso Royale so I could work on some stuff for class. Después, visitamos unas tiendas en la calle entre el capitolio y la universidad y paramos en Espresso Royale porque tenía deberes de mis clases. 

Later, we drove through the city and ended up at Half Price Books before having a late lunch at Potbelly, a sub sandwich chain, and taking off to Milwaukee. Después, exploramos la ciudad en coche y fuimos a Half Price Books antes de comer en Potbelly (una cadena de bocadillos) y marcharnos para Milwaukee.
