La Vaquilla (1985)

Valencian director Luis García Berlanga takes on the Spanish Civil War in 1985’s La vaquilla.  Director valenciano Luis García Berlanga mira la Guerra Civil española en la película de 1985 La Vaquilla.

It’s 1937, and a group of Republicano* soldiers on the Aragón front find out about a nearby town’s fiestas. They decide to disguise themselves as Nationalists to attend the fiestas and steal the cow intended to be used in the bullfight. Hijinks ensue as they try to go back to their own side.  El año es 1937, y un grupo de soldados republicanos están en el frente de Aragón cuando se enteran de las fiestas de un pueblo cercano. Deciden fingir ser nacionalistas para ir a las fiestas y robar la vaquilla de la corrida de toros. Problemas surgen cuando intentan volver a su trinchera.

It’s a typical Berlanga flick, but it’s much more interesting with the context of the Spanish Civil War. Who knew that their could be humour found in a war movie? It actually lived up to the hype for me. I’m sort of a Spanish Civil War buff, so it was interesting to see Berlanga’s take on it. I will need to see it a second time to catch all the hidden meanings and metaphors. Es una peli típica de Buñuel, pero es más interesante con el contexto de la Guerra Civil. ¿Quién sabía que se puede encontrar humor en una película de guerra? Para mi, llegó a las expectativas que la gente me daban de la película. Es verdad que me interesa bastante la Guerra Civil, y por eso era interesante ver como Berlanga la presentó. Tendré que verla una segunda vez para pillar todas los metáforas y significados escondidos. 

The film was shot in Sos del Rey Católico and many of the town’s residents played extras. Berlanga demanded perfectionist, and actor Alfredo Landa commented that he had to run up a hill 41 times for the perfect shot. Rodaron la pelícla en Sos del Rey Católico y muchos de los habitantes del pueblo hicieron de extras. Berlanga era un perfeccionista, y el actor Alfredo Landa comentó que tuvo que subir un cerro 41 veces hasta que Berlanga estaba satisfecho. 

At the time of shooting, it was the most expensive Spanish film. Cuando rodaron la película, era la peli más cara de historia de España. 

Berlanga wrote the script with his normal partner, Rafael Azcona. The film stars Landa, José Sacristán, Adolfo Marsillach, Santiago Ramos, Guillermo Montesinos and Amparo Soler Leal, among others. Berlanga escribió el guión con su compañero de siempre, Rafael Azcona. Las protagonistas incluyen Landa, José Sacristán, Adolfo Marsillach, Santiago Ramos, Guillermo Montesinos y Amparo Soler Leal, entre otros.

Gernika (2016).

It was only a matter of time before someone made a movie about the attacks on Gernika during the Spanish Civil War. (Note: I will use the official Basque spelling of Guernica in this entry). Era una cuestión de tiempo. Un día, alguien iba a hacer una película sobre los bombardeos de Gernika durante la Guerra Civil española. (Nota: Voy a usar la ortografía vasca de Guernica.) 

The 2016 film Gernika, directed by Basque director Koldo Serra, stars James D’Arcy, María Valverde and Jack Davenport. It’s the story of an American reporter and his interpreter during the days preceding the bombing of Gernika. La película de 2016, Gernika, dirigido por director vasco Koldo Serra, es protagonizado por James D’Arcy, María Valverde y Jack Davenport. Es la historia de un periodista estadounidense y su traductora durante los días antes del bombardero de Gernika. 

Remember that 2001 Michael Bay film Pearl Harbor? If so, I’m sorry. This film is very much in the style of Pearl Harbor. A fictitious romance with the backdrop of a war. And just like Pearl Harbor, the CGI effects are more important than the script, stories and direction. ¿Os recordáis de la película de Michael Bay, Pearl Harbor, de 2001? Sí recordáis, lo siento. Esta película esta hecha en el mismo estilo. Un romance ficticio que tiene lugar durante la época de guerra. Y como Pearl Harbor, los efectos de CGI son más importantes del guión, historias y dirección. 

The history of Gernika is important, and while the film does attempt to show the Basque culture, the film reeks of Hollywood. La historia de Gernika es importante, y aunque intenta mostrar la cultura vasca, la película apesta de Hollywood. 

I did enjoy seeing my old home, Bilbao, and I did feel a twinge of homesickness for Bilbao. I remember when they were filming this, so I had high hopes for it when I should have known better.  Disfruté de ver mi hogar antiguo, Bilbao, la capital del mundo, y me daba nostalgia por la ciudad. Recuerdo cuando estaban rodando la película. Tenía mucha esperanza por la película. No sé porque pensaba que iba a ser más de que lo era. 

I’m looking forward to getting back into the world of Buñuel! ¡Me da mucha ilusión volver al mundo de Buñuel!

Market day in Gernika (Guernica)

Gernika

Lunes gerniqués, golperik ez.

April 26, 1937. It was a typical Monday in the Basque village of Gernika. No work gets done on this day, as the saying goes. People from all the neighbouring villages in Vizcaya were in Gernika, as usual, to go to the market, where local farmers would sell their crops from the prior week. Over 10,000 people were in town for the event. El 26 de abril, 1937. Era un lunes típico en el pueblo vasco de Gernika. Nadie hace su trabajo en este día, como el refrán de euskera dice. Gente de todos los pueblos cercanos en Vizcaya estaban en Gernika, como siempre, para ir al mercado donde todos los granjeros vendieron sus mejores productos de la semana anterior. Había 10.000 personas este día en el pueblo para ir al mercado. 

However, this Monday’s Market  was different. Este lunes era diferente. 

For three hours, Gernika was bombed by the Germans to help Franco take control of the Spanish government from the Republicans. Basque reports say 1654 civilians died this day, although the German reports state only 300. Historians believe it was under 300. Durante tres horas, Gernika fue bombardeado por los alemanes para ayudarle a Franco tomar control del gobierno español de los republicanos. Los informes vascos dicen 1654 civiles se murieron este día, aunque losinformes alemanes dicen solo 300. Hoy, historiadores dicen que era menos de 300. 

The attack was the most tragic of the Spanish Civil War. It was captured in Picasso’s haunting painting Guernica. El intentado fue lo más trágico de la Guerra Civil Española. Picasso lo capturó en su cuadro evocador famoso Guernica.

The market continues to take place today, and last year I combined a hike with a trip to the Monday market in Gernika. In 2016, nearly 80 years after the bombing, the market has lost its importance, but it still exists. People come to buy fruits, vegetables, grains and flea market items. The market reminded me of others I had been to in Spain. It was pretty big for the size of Gernika, and I tried to imagine what it would be like to look forward to this market every week and the tragedy that ocurred that April day. El mercado sigue hasta hoy en día. El año pasado, paré antes de hacer una ruta de senderismo para ver el mercado famoso de Gernika. En 2016, casí 80 años después del bombardero, el mercado ya no tiene tanta importancia, pero existe todavía. La gente viene para comprar fruta, verdura, granos y cosas típicas del mercados. El mercado me recordaba de otros que he visto en España. Era bastante grande por un pueblo el tamaño de Gernika, y imaginaba como sería anticipar el mercado cada semana y la tragedia que pasó este día de abril. 

Gernika is an important city for the Basques because it was historically where the Vizcayan parliament was located (today it is in Bilbao, the capital of the world province.) Important assemblies were held underneath trees in the Basque Country, and by 1512, the oak tree in Gernika was where all important assemblies took place. It is known as the Gernikako Arbola (the Tree of Gernika in Euskera). Gernika es un sitio importante para los vascos porque el parlamento vasco estaba ubicado (hoy está en Bilbao, la capital del mundo digo provincia.) Había asambleas importantes bajo de los arboles en Euskadi, y en 1512, el roble de Gernika era donde tenían todos sus asambleas. Es conocido como el Gernikako Arbola (el árbol de Gernika en Euskera. Ves, no es tan difícil euskera.) 

The trees are always grown from the previous tree’s acorns. It has been replaced in 1860, 2004 and 2015. The father tree was 450 years old and planted in the 14th century.  Los árboles siempre son crecidos de las bellotas del árbol anterior. Era reemplazado en 1860, 2004 y 2015. El árbol padre vivió 450 años y era planteado en el Siglo XIV. 

During the bombing of Gernika, the tree was protected from the Falangists (Franco’s Nationalist troops) who wanted to destroy it. It is an important symbol of peace for the Basques.  Durante el bombardero de Gernika, el árbol fue protegido. Los falangistas querían destruirlo. Es un símbolo importante de paz para los vascos. 

Gernika was founded in 1336. Today it has a population of 16,224 residents and is well connected with Bilbao and even San Sebastián-Donostia. It is well worth a visit for history buffs and fans of Picasso’s famous painting.  Gernika fue fundado en el año 1336. Hoy tiene una población de 16.224 habitantes y está muy bien comunicado con Bilbao y incluso San Sebastián-Donostia. Vale la pena visitarlo, especialmente para los aficionados de historia y los aficionados de Picasso.

Penélope Cruz is literally the girl of your dreams in 1998’s La niña de tus ojos.  Penélope Cruz es, literalmente, la niña de tus ojos en la película de 1998 La niña de tus ojos.

Cruz returns to collaborate with director Fernando Trueba in the mítico (legendary, but I wouldn’t call it legendary in English) film that blends the real world and fiction. The script is fictional, but it has real people like Joseph Goebbels, one of Hitler’s associates. It’s based on what could happened during the filming of Florian Rey’s Carmen (de la Triana) in 1938. Cruz vuelve a colaborar con director Fernando Trueba en el mítica film que mezcla la historia real y ficción. El guion es ficción, pero tiene personajes reales como Joseph Goebbeles, un colega de Hitler. Es basada en lo que podría haber pasado durante el rodaje de Carmen de la Triana de Florian Rey en 1938. 

Cruz stars as Imperio Argentina Macarena Granada, the star of a Spanish-German co-production being filmed in Germany during the Spanish Civil War. Macarena is a spitfire and a diva. At first, the cast and crew find themselves in normal fish-out-of-water cultural shock, but soon all the “Heil Hitler!”s start to affect them. As it’s difficult to find Germans with an Andalusian face, they use Russians and Jews from a nearby concentration camp. Of course, Macarena befriends one of the extras, and she has to decide how far she wants to go  to save both her new friend and the production when the German producer decides that she’s the “girl of his dreams”.  Cruz hace el papel de Imperio Argentina Macarena Granada, la protagonista de una co-producción entre España y Alemania durante la Guerra Civil española. Están en Alemania para rodar la película. Macarena es una diva y una personaje explosiva. Al principio, el reparto se encuentra en el típico shock de cultura, situación de pez fuera de agua. Muy pronto, todos los “Heil Hitlers” les afectan. Como es difícil encontrar alemanas con caras andaluzas, usan rusos y judíos de un campo de concentración. Desde luego, Macarena se hace buenas migas con uno de los extras. Ahora tiene que decidir que quiere hacer para salvar su amigo nuevo y la producción cuando el productor alemán se de cuenta que es “la niña de tus ojos.” 

The film is another all-star collaboration of Spanish stars. Jorge Sanz, Cruz’s co-star from Belle Epoque, is also back, this time as an actor who also catches the eye of a German actor. Lola León and Maria Barranco, frequent Almodóvar collaborators also appear. Santiago Segura, friend of director Álex de la Iglesia and now a famous director in his own right (Torrente) is another actor in the film. The director Blas Fontiveros is portrayed by Antonio Resines. The elegant Catalán actress Rosa Maria Sardà is another member of the acting crew. Every time Rosa Maria Sardà shows up in a film, viewers are in for a treat. However, it is Czech actor Miroslav Táborský who steals the show as the set translator. La película es otra presentación de los mejores actores de España. Jorge Sanz, el protagonista de Belle Epoque, también vuelve, este vez como un actor quien se atrae un actor alemán. Lola León y María Barranco, colaboradoras frecuentes de Almodóvar, también hacen papeles. Santiago Segura, un amigo de director Álex de la Iglesia y ahora otro director famoso en España (las películas Torrent) también aparece en el film. El director Blas Fontiveros es interpretado por Antonio Resines. La actriz catalana elegante Rosa Maria Sardà es otro miembro del reparto. Es un joya ver Rosa Maria Sardà en cualquier película. Sin embargo, es actor checo Miroslav Táborský quien es la sensación de la película. Interpreta el traductor de la película. 

The film has received a number of complaints. A lot of the humour is unfortunately lost in translation. The humor, to me, lightens up the impossibly dark situation. Imperio Argentina sued the producers and directors for using her life story. And the ending Casablanca style scene brings the question “homage or rip off?” El film no está sin sus quejas. Mucho del sentido del humor se pierda en traducción. Para mi, el humor hace un argumento bastante grave más leve.  Después, la actriz Imperio Argentina les demandó al director y los productores por usar su historia. También, la escena final es parecido a Casablanca. ¿Es homenaje o timo?

However, the film works. The ending scene is obviously homage in my eyes. The cast is at the top of their games. The cinematography is excellent. One hidden gem that casual viewers may not notice is that Macarena is always dressed in bright, vibrant (¿Almodóvarian?) colours while the rest of the cast and crew are more subdued, representing the dark outlook of the Spanish Civil War and Nazi Germany. My only complaint is that the movie drags a bit in parts. Sin embargo, para mi, la película es muy buena. La escena final, en mis ojos, es homenaje. El reparto está a tope de sus posibilidades. La fotografía es excelente. Una joya escondida que algunos espectadores quizás no notan es que Macarena siempre se viste en colores vibrantes, típico de Almodóvar mientras los demás se visten en colores más oscuros y sutiles, que representa la perspectiva negra de la Guerra Civil en España y la Alemania de los nazis. Mi única queja es que en partes, la película se hace larga. 

The film won seven Goyas, including Best Film and Penelope Cruz’s first of three Best Actress wins. (The other two are Volver and supporting actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona).  La película ganó siete Goyas, incluso Mejor Película y Mejor actriz protagonista por Penélope Cruz, la primera de sus tres Goyas. (Las otras son para Volver y Mejor actriz de reparto por Vicky Cristina Barcelona.)
