After a 48-hour stomach bug, I was more than ready to start walking again when I woke up (extremely late for a Camino day at 8!) that Sunday morning. Después de sufrir un virus de estómago de 48 horas, estaba muy listo volver a caminar cuando me desperté (¡muy tarde para ser un día del Camino!) sobre las 8 de la mañana de domingo.

I got ready, feeling better but a bit wary of food, and I was out the door around 9:00 at a guess. I saw a few peregrinos looking at the church where Franco got married (I wish I had not learnt that tidbit of information, as I previously had loved that church), and I ducked in to a bar to try having breakfast. The tostada and café (I only have manzanilla when I am sick, and the sooner I get off it, the happier I am) agreed with me. I was on the mend. Me preparé por el día, mejor pero todavía nervioso de comer mucho, y creo que salí sobre las 9.00. Vi a unos peregrinos mirando la iglesia donde Franco se casó (ojalá que nunca me enterara que se casó allí porque antes me gustaba mucha la iglesia), y fui a desayunar en un bar. La tostada y el café no causaron ninguna molestia) (solo tomo manzanilla cuando estoy malito, y lo más pronto que lo dejo de beber lo mejor). Estaba recuperándome.

Leaving Oviedo wasn’t as bad as I feared as the way out of big cities can be industrial and long. I saw barrios I had never seen during any of my previous visits. Before I knew it, I was passing a park and outside of Oviedo. It really reminded me of Bilbao. La salida de Oviedo no era tan mal como pensaba. La salida de la mayoría de las ciudades grandes puede ser largo y industrial. Vi barrios que nunca había visto antes durante mis visitas a Oviedo. Antes de lo sabía, estaba pasando un parque y saliendo de Oviedo. Me acordaba de Bilbao.

The Camino went through narrow paths that passed by farms and mountains in the distance. I also saw a nice ermita where I stamped the credenciales. El Camino pasó por unos senderos estrechos que iban por granjas con vistas de montes en la distancia. También vi una ermita bonita donde podía sellar las credenciales.

I later stopped at an open bar for an lemon Aquarius, and I took the photo of a hiking group from the area who did the same for me. It made me miss Samarucs in València.  Luego paré en un bar abierto para tomar un Aquarius de limón. Hice la foto de un grupo de senderismo y después me hicieron una de mi. Echaba de menos Samarucs en València.

I had a bit of road-walking before a bridge and then the path that went up to Escamplero (population between 200 and 300 people). It was an extremely easy day after the San Salvador, even if I was still a bit ill. Tenía que caminar por la carretera un rato antes de un puente y el sendero que subí a Escamplero (población entre 200 y 300 personas). Era un día muy fácil después del San Salvador, aunque todavía estaba un poco mal.

I felt decent, so I called the pensión in Grado, and they were fully booked. I didn’t want to risk arriving and not having a bed in the albergue after being so ill, so I decided to just stay at the albergue in Escamplero, despite the bad reviews I had read. Pero me encontré bien, y llamé la pensión en Grado pero ya estaba completo. No quería arriesgar llegar a Grado y no tener una cama en el albergue después de estar tan enfermo. Por eso, decidí quedarme en el albergue en Escamplero, a pesar de las malas criticas había leído por Internet.

It was a good thing, because during lunch, the skies opened and it began to rain quite heavily. I would have been caught in that downpour. Hice bien porque mientras estaba comiendo, empezó a llover a cántaros . Si hubiera seguido a Grados, habría caminando en el diluvio.

At the albergue, I rested, met some Italian peregrinos, some Australian ones, two French ones who just arrived from the Camino Francés, wanting something more peaceful, and a few others. En el albergue, descansé, conocí unos peregrinos italianos, australianos, dos franceses que estaban haciendo el Camino Francés y querían algo de tranquilidad, y otros.

The food was expensive at the only restaurant, and I had to ask for a special dinner due to my weak stomach. It was one of the best tortillas I have had though. The waiter was from Vitoria and had lived in Barakaldo, so we conversed about Bilbao, the capital of the world. La comida era cara en el único restaurante, y tenía que pedir una cena especial dado al estómago débil. Pero bueno, era una de las mejores tortillas que he probado. El camarero era de Vitoria y había vivido en Barakaldo, y hablamos de Bilbao, la capital del mundo.

I read two Spanish books at the albergue and mostly rested. The next day would be a return to normal for the Camino, and I wanted to be ready for it. Me leí dos libros españoles en el albergue y descansé. Quería hacer una etapa normal del Camino el día siguente, y quería estar listo por ello.

Camino San Salvador (Camino de Santiago) Etapa 5. Mieres-Oviedo.

No one ever wants to be sick, especially while on a pilgrimage to Oviedo and then Santiago. Nadie quiere estar enfermo, especialmente durante una peregrinación a Oviedo y después Santiago. 

When I woke up several times during the night to vomit, I was still hoping to be able to power through the last 20 kilometres or so to Oviedo. Me desperté varias veces durante la noche para vomitar, pero seguía con esperanzas poder caminar los últimos 20 kilómetros a Oviedo. 

I didn’t know I wasn’t the only one throwing up. One of the Spanish peregrinos was also sick. No sabía que no era el único vomitando. Uno de los peregrinos españoles también estaba malito. 

I moved slowly and went back to bed as the other peregrinos got ready for the day. The other sick peregrino and his uncle were going to take the train to Oviedo later on. They told me to do the same as they could tell I was not fit for walking. Iba despacito, pasito a pasito, suave suavecito (no me mates por eso) y volví a la cama mientras los otros peregrinos estaba preparándose por el día. El otro enfermo y su tío iba a coger el tren a Oviedo más tarde. Me dijieron que debería hacer lo mismo como se notaban que no estaba bien para caminar. 

I felt like the worst peregrino ever. But I fell back asleep, and the peregrino uncle took care of me like he did his nephew. I awoke to lemon Aquarius. Me sentí como si fuera el peor peregrino de historia. Pero volví a dormir, y el tío peregrino me cuidó como le cuidó a su nieto. Me desperté para encontrar un Aquarius de limón.

We caught a taxi to the train station, and then the train around 11:20. I checked into my hotel and left the backpack, and we arrived to the Cathedral around the same time as the peregrinos who left around 7:00 did. Cogemos un taxi a la estación de trenes, y el tren llegaba sobre las 11.20. Fui al hotel y dejé la mochila, y llegamos a la catedral a la misma vez de los peregrinos quien salieron del albergue caminando a las 7.00. 

It had been a very rainy day with lots of mud. I still felt bad about being sick and not walking it. Era un día lluvioso con bastante barro. Todavía me sabe mal de estar enfermo y no poder caminarlo. 

I had never actually been inside the San Salvador Cathedral of Oviedo. Entrance is free for peregrinos, ,although the Salvadorano credencial is 4€. They didn’t ask me any questions, and my fellow peregrinos assured me I was still a true peregrino and not my fault I had got sick. Nunca había estado dentro de la Catedral San Salvador. La entrada es gratis por peregrinos, pero la credencial Salvadorano cuesta 4€. No me preguntó nada, y los otros peregrinos me aseguraron que yo era un peregrino verdadero y no era mi culpa que me puse enfermo. 

We said goodbye, and I went to the hotel to rest for most of the day and most of Saturday too. I had to change hotels on Saturday because it was completely booked, and the second hotel was nowhere near as nice. At least on Saturday I could manage to eat  a menú del día that had rice and grilled chicken. Nos despedimos, y fui al hotel para descansar. Descansé todo el día viernes y mucho de sábado. Tenía que cambiar de hotel en sábado porque el de viernes estaba completo. El segundo hotel era bastante peor. Al menos podé comer un menú del día que tenía arroz y pollo a la plancha, dieta blanda, el sábado. 

I had plenty of time to make my final decision about which Camino I was going to do. I looked hard at the weather forecasts, distances and came to the conclusion I would continue with the Primitivo as planned if I woke up okay. También me daba tiempo para elegir el Camino que quería hacer. Miré el tiempo para los dos caminos, las distancias, y al final decidí seguir con el Primitivo si me desperté mejor.

Coincidentally enough, on the Asturian TV channel, there was a documentary about the Camino del Norte in Asturias. Por casualidad, había un documental del Camino  del Norte asturiano en el canal de Asturias.

It wasn’t exactly the way I wanted to spend my time in Oviedo, but no one plans for a stomach bug. I later found out that there was indeed a virus going through the San Salvador. No era la manera que quería pasar el tiempo en Oviedo, pero nadie planifica coger un virus. Después, me enteré que había un virus contagiando muchos por el San Salvador. 

The San Salvador was over…and I had 12 amazing days on the Primitivo ahead of me. El San Salvador se acabó…y todavía me quedaban 12 días geniales por el Primitivo.

Santa María de Naranco

I had to go to Oviedo to pick up my visa ID card, so I made an adventure of it, of course. Tenía que ir a Oviedo para coger mi TIE (DNI de extranjeros), y lo convertí a una aventura, desde luego. 

After stopping in Santander along the way (as there are no direct buses between Valencia and Asturias that I know of) and seeing a beautiful sunrise, I caught a BlaBlaCar to Oviedo. Después de parar en Santander por el camino, como no hay un autobús directo entre València y Asturias, que yo sepa) y ver un amanecer precioso, cogí un BlaBlaCar hasta Oviedo.

Some of my favourite places to visit in Oviedo include the Santa María de Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo churches above the city on Monte Naranco. They were finished in the 9th century. There is something spiritual about them. Cuando voy a Oviedo, me encanta visitar las iglesias de Santa María de Naranco y San Miguel de Lillo en el Monte Naranco. 

After checking into my pensión, I decided to revisit them and hike to the monuments. It’s about 3 kilometres from the city centre, and a perfect way to celebrate El Día de la Hispanidad, Oct. 12, when it still felt like summer all over the greatest peninsula in the world. Después de dejar mis cosas en la pensión, decidí ir a verlas de nuevo y caminar a los momumentos. Son unos 3 kilómetros del centro de la ciudad, y creo que era una manera perfecto para celebrar El Día de la Hispanidad, el 12 de octubre, cuando todavía se sentía verano en toda la mejor península del mundo.

I had previously done the hike in 2012, and I don’t think I went quite the same way. I know that back then, I didn’t have an iPad or the Google Maps app (I was on my first Smart Phone then!), and I don’t remember exactly how I arrived. Ya había hecho esta ruta una vez antes, en 2012, y creo que fui una ruta distinta. No sé como llegué como no tenía ni un iPad ni el app de Google Maps (tenía mi primer SmartPhone en 2012).

This time I barely needed the app. I just figured it out. It took about 45 minutes, and the views were beautiful as always. Lots of people had the same idea I did. Esta vez, apenas usé Google Maps y no me perdí. La subida era unos 45 minutos, y las vistas eran bonitas, como siempre. Mucha gente tenía la misma idea que yo.

Sometimes it’s okay to repeat hikes when the places are this special. A veces está bien repetir rutas cuando los sitios son tan especiales.

Anything related to the Camino is always an adventure, and arriving there is no different. Cualquier cosa relacionada con el Camino siempre es una aventura, y llegar allí no es diferente.

After leaving the camp in Miranda de Ebro, my first stop was Bilbao, capital of the world and my home between 2013 and 2016. Although I have my differences with Bilbao, it still has a special place in my heart and is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen. I was lucky, and for once it wasn’t raining.  Después de irme del campamento en Miranda de Ebro, la primera parada era Bilbao, la capital del mundo y mi hogar entre 2013 y 2015. Aunque tengo mis problemas con la ciudad, le tengo mucho cariño y es uno de los sitios más bonitos que he visto. Tenía suerte, y por una vez no estaba lloviendo.

It was a short visit. I caught up with some friends and went for a walk along la Ría Nervión. I visited my favourite cafés and knew that the move to Valencia was the right choice. Bilbao, whose population is now 345,122, is a fantastic city, but it isn’t home. Era una visita corta. Vi unos amigos y di una vuelta por la Ría Nervión. Fui a mis cafés preferidos. Al fondo, sabía que el traslado a València era la mejor decisión. Bilbao, ahora con una población de 345.122, es una ciudad fantástica, pero no es mi sitio.

Sunday afternoon, I caught a BlaBlaCar to Gijón, population 273,422. The ride was about 3 hours, although we hit a bit of traffic outside of Gijón due to an accident and it being Sunday evening. Domingo por la tarde, cogí un BlaBlaCar a Gijón, población 273.422. El viaje tardó unos tres horas, aunque encontramos un atasco de tráfico fuera de Gijón dado a un accidente y como era una tarde de domingo.

Every time I visit Asturias, I stay in Oviedo. This time, I stayed in Gijón where I would start my Camino 2017 the following Tuesday. On Monday, I did have to go to Oviedo where I took care of some visa-related paperwork (everything is “resuelto favorable” now) and spent the morning meandering the streets. I returned to Gijón for lunch (fabada and escalopines al cabrales) and meandered the streets and the beach in the afternoon. Siempre cuando he visitado Asturias, he dormido en Oviedo. Para un cambio, esta vez dormí en Gijón donde iba a empezar el Camino 2017 el siguiente martes. El lunes tenía que ir a Oviedo donde hice algo de papeleo relacionado al visado (ahora todo es “resuelto favorable”) y pasé la mañana deambulando las calles de Oviedo. Volví a Gijón para la comida (fabada y escalopines al cabrales) y después deambulé las calles de Gijón y la playa por la tarde.

I did make sure to stop in the Oficina de Turismo to get a stamp in my credenciales, as I was staying in an AirBNB. They were super friendly and explained me everything about the next day’s route. Hice una parada en la Oficina de Turismo para conseguir un sello en las credenciales, como estaba alojado en un AirBNB. Eran muy majos y me explicaron todo la ruta del próximo día.

It was a good way to disconnect between the summer job and the Camino. I went to bed early to rest up for the Camino del Norte that awaited me the following day. The yellow arrows were about to guide my life once again. Era una buena manera de desconectar entre el trabajo de verano y el Camino. Fui a la cama pronto para descansar para el próximo día, el día que iba a empezar el Camino del Norte para 2017. Las flechas amarillas estaban a punto de guiarme la vida otra vez más.

Visa Renewal in Asturias.

It’s that time of year again, where I have to renew my visa in Spain. If only I could get a working visa and not a student visa *sigh* Ya es la época del año, cuando me toca renovar mi visado en España. Ojalá pudiera conseguir un visado de trabajo y no visado de estudiante…

I had to go to Oviedo in Asturias to do it, as that’s where I’m currently assigned to. I’m not sure what I’m going to do about the situation (read more about it here). Este año, tenía que ir hasta Oviedo en Asturias para hacerlo, como es donde estoy asignado en este moment. Todavía no sé seguro que haré sobre la situación (si quieres puedes leer más sobre la situación aquí. 

The renewal went fine, I think (with Spanish bureaucracy, one just never knows for sure until the “resuelto favorable” comes through!). I flew to Santander on Thursday and caught a BlaBlaCar to Oviedo where I stayed two nights. Creo que la prórroga me ha ido bien (con la burocracia española, ¡nunca se sabe hasta la “resuelto favorable” llegue!)

I had all the paperwork ready and was at Extranjería at 9 am. I had to go to another office in the same complex. There was no wait whatsoever, and I handed my documents in and it was fine. I had to go to another office to submit the tax for the NIE (numéro de identificación de extranjero (foreigner ID number)), where they thought I was changing my visa to a work visa. I WISH. Tenía todo el papeleo listo y estaba en Extranjería a las 9, pero tenía que ir a otra oficina en el mismo complejo para presentar papeles. No tenía que esperar nada. Les di los documentos y todo bien. Después, tenía que ir a otra oficina pare entregar la tasa del NIE (numéro de identificación de extranjero), donde pensaba que estaba cambiando el visado a un visado de trabajo. OJALÁ.

After the rain stopped, I caught a bus to nearby Gijón. Oviedo is the capital of Asturias with a population of 222,917, and Gijón is 20 km (12 miles) away. Gijón is the largest city in Asturias with a population of 276,001. Después de la lluvia paró, cogí un autobús al próximo Gijón. Oviedo es la capital de Asturias con una población de 222.917, y Gijón está a 20 kilometros. Gijón es la ciudad más grande de Asturias con una población de 276.001.

I had lunch in Gijón…typical fabada of the region. Comí en Gijón…la fabada típica de la región.

Later, I went for a short walk around the Cimavilla and the old town, admiring the views of the Cantabrian Sea. The rain was holding off, and I found myself wishing that I could live in Gijón instead of Oviedo. Ok, I really want to stay in Valencia, but her emails…Después, di una vuelta por la Cimavilla y el casco antiguo, admirando las vistas del Mar Cantábrico. No estaba lloviendo, y me encontré deseando vivir en Gijón y no Oviedo. Ok, vale, lo que quiero realmente es quedarme en Valencia, pero…

Later I returned to Oviedo and roamed the streets of this beautiful city. I love the Plaza de Paraguas (Umbrella Square doesn’t have the same ring to it.) Luego volví a Oviedo para pasear por la ciudad bonita. Me encanta la plaza de Paraguas. (Suena mejor en castellano, de verdad.)

Saturday morning I caught the bus back to Santander and flew back to Valencia with Ryan Air, safe and sound. El sábado por la mañana, cogí el autobús a Santander y volví con Ryan Air y llegué a Valencia sin problema. 

Asturias has a lot to offer, I know, and it is extremely beautiful. I wish I could feel more excited about a year there, but my heart just belongs to Valencia. Asturias tiene mucha de ofrecer, ya lo sé, y es muy preciosa. Quiero sentirme más emocionado sobre un año allí, pero mi corazón pertenece a Valencia.

All Good Things Come to an End: Gijón, Oviedo and León.

My Camino del Norte Adventure 2016 was coming to an end, and I had to get back to Valencia somehow. Mi aventura del Camino del Norte de 2016 estaba terminando, y ahora tenía que volver a Valencia.

Tuesday morning, I slept in to around 7:00, and most everyone had already left the albergue. The Riojano and I were going to go to Gijón together after having breakfast at the Peregrino Friendly Hotel. We saw a lot of peregrinos who were calling it quits that day, which is why I say La Isla is cursed. Martes, dormí hasta las 7.00, y casí todos ya se habían ido del albergue cuando me desperté. El Riojano y yo teníamos planes para ir a Gijón juntos después de desayunar en el hotel que era peregrino-friendly. Vimos muchos peregrinos que estaban dejando el Camino por el año, y por eso digo que La Isla tiene una maldición. 

The bus to Gijón didn’t take too long, and my friend and I walked through the streets, looking for my bank to finally get cash. Next stop was Old Town and the Eulogy to the Horizon monument designed by Eduardo Chillida. Gijón is a city 276, 473 residents located on the Cantabrian Sea. There is a nice church on the sea. El autobús a Gijón no tardó mucho tiempo, y mi amigo y yo paseamos por las calles, buscando mi banco para poder sacar dinero. Después era el Casco Viejo y la Elogio al Horizonte de Eduardo Chillida. Gijón es una ciudad de 276.473 habitantes situado en el Mar Cantábrico. Hay una iglesia bonita por la playa.

I had previously visited in 2011, and my opinion stayed the same. Gijón is okay, but I prefer Oviedo. After wandering around all morning, we caught the bus to the capital of Asturias, Oviedo, population 222, 917. I nearly moved to Oviedo last year, but in the end, the job went with someone else. Oviedo is, for me at least, somewhat similar to Bilbao. Ya había visitado Gijón en 2011, y mi opinión queda lo mismo. Gijón no está mal, pero prefiero Oviedo. Después de explorar toda la mañana, cogemos el autobús a la capital de Asturias, Oviedo, población 222.917. Casi me trasladé a Oviedo el año pasado, pero al final, el trabajo fue con otro candidato. Para mi, Oviedo es bastante parecido a Bilbao.

I had been to Oviedo in 2011 and 2012, so this time I rested up, recovering from my cold/heat stroke, drinking lots of water. I had a cheap lunch, went to my AirBNB, took a siesta, showered, explored trying to find my fave plaza (The Umbrella Square/Plaza del Paraguas). I had dinner with my friend, trying patatas al cabrales (the famous cheese from Cabrales, Asturias) and another pintxo and sidra, the famous Asturian cider. Había estado en Oviedo antes en 2011 y 2012, y por eso, esta vez descansé, recuperando de mi mezcla de resfriado/insolación, bebiendo mucho agua. Comí barato, fui a mi AirBNB, dormí una siesta, me duché y después fui explorando, buscando mi plaza favorita (la Plaza de Paraguas). Cené con mi amigo, probando patatas al cabrales (el queso de Cabrales, Asturias) y un pinxto y la famosa sidra asturiano.

Wednesday morning, I woke up to a grey day. I explored a bit more, finally finding my plaza, playing with a German Shepherd, and in general just taking it easy. I had an early lunch (at 13.00!) before catching the 14:00 bus to León. The scenery between Oviedo and León is spectacular. El miércoles, me desperté a un día gris. Exploré un rato más, por fin encontré mi plaza, jugué con un pastor alemán, todo tranquilo. Comí pronto (a las 13.00!) antes de coger el autobús a las 14:00 a León. El paisaje entre Oviedo y León es espectacular.

Upon arrival to León, I went to the same AirBNB where I had stayed last December. I went to the Cathedral and sat and wrote a while, watching the peregrinos from another Camino (the Camino Francés), although there wasn’t that many. It was a hot day so they were probably all resting. Después de llegar a León, fui al mismo AirBNB donde me alojé el diciembre pasado. Fui a la Catedral y me senté para escribir un rato, mirando los pocos peregrinos de otro Camino, el Camino Francés (no había muchos). Era un día caloroso, y entonces probablemente todos estaban descansando. 

I didn’t have a lot of time in León (population 127,817 and metropolitan population of 202,793) this time around, but it’s always a nice city to see. Especially the Cathedral. No tenía mucho tiempo en León (población 127.817, población metropolitana de 202.793), pero siempre es una ciudad bonita, especialmente la Catedral. 

The next morning I caught an uneventful, long BlaBlaCar back to Valencia that dropped me off close to my new house in Valencia. La próxima mañana, cogí un BlaBlaCar a Valencia que me dejó cerca a mi casa nueva en Valencia. 

The Camino adventure was over for 2016, but I had a new adventure awaiting me in my new home, Valencia. I was more than ready to start building my life in Valencia. La aventura del Camino había terminado por 2016, pero tenía una aventura nueva esperandome en mi nuevo hogar, Valencia. Estaba muy listo para construir mi vida nueva valenciana. Visca València!
