My mom has wanted to travel to northern Kentucky to see the covered bridges for years. Last summer, I finally was able to take her to see them. Although we didn’t see a couple on the list, we did see most of them. Mi madre ha querido viajar al norte de Kentucky para ver los puentes cubiertos desde hace muchos años. We woke up early and headed toward Cincinnati. Near Cincinnati, we got on the bypass I-275 headed east and a few exits later continued east on the AA highway. We arrived to the first one around 11:00, and I was happy there was some dogs. There is a nearby ice cream place in the afternoon. Walcott Covered Bridge was built in the 1880s in Bracken County and today is open to pedestrian traffic. Llegamos al primer puente sobre las 11, y me alegró ver perros. We then went on to the second one, Dover Covered Bridge, in Mason County. This one dates back to 1835 and is off KY-8 on Lees Creek Road. It closed to traffic a few years ago but is visible from Lees Creek Road. Luego seguimos al segundo puente, el Puente Cubierto Dover en el Condado Mason. We missed seeing Valley Pike Covered Bridge, built in 1864. We drove past it, but we didn’t see it from the road. It’s a privately-owned covered bridge off KY 3056/Germantown Road. My mom said we didn’t have to backtrack to try to find it and we continued on our way. Perdimos el Valley Pike, construido en 1864. Lo intentamos encontrarlo, pero no lo vimos desde la carretera. Cabin Creek, in Lewis County, was a bit of a drive. I still hadn’t changed my mobile from Spanish to American service, so I was caught without Google Maps! My mom’s phone isn’t too smart. We did end up finding the bridge that dates back to 1867. It’s closed to traffic. Cabin Creek (Arroyo Cabaña) en el Condado Lewis (Luis) estaba lejos. We had another drive down to Fleming County, which has three bridges. We ran into a few other people looking for covered bridges at the Goddard White Bridge, a historically reconstructed bridge near Goddard off KY 32. We were able to drive over this bridge, which was an unnerving experience. Después, era otro viaje largo al Condado Fleming, que tiene tres puentes. We then went to find the Grange City Covered Bridge, built in 1870, and the Ringo’s Mill Covered Bridge, built between 1867 and 1869, both over Fox Creek. Both are closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic. We decided to head into Lexington instead of seeing the Johnson Creek Covered Bridge in Robertson County. My mom was satisfied to cross something off her Bucket List, and I felt like a good son for making it happen. Mi madre estaba contenta tachar algo de su Bucket List, y me sentí como el bueno hijo para ayudarle en ello.

I meant to write this last summer, but I was busy writing the Camino de Santiago entries and then Grad School took over my life. Although there isn’t much information out there, if you put in the names of the bridges in Google Maps, you can find them all. Quería escribir esta entrada el verano pasado, pero ya estaba ocupado de escribir las entradas sobre el Camino de Santiago y después el máster tomó control de mi vida. Aunque no hay mucha información, se puede encontrar los puentes en Google Maps y hacer una ruta para verlos.

When I was 8 years old, my mom, aunt and I were travelling through Kentucky and decided to stop at the Natural Bridge of Kentucky. I will always remember it because the sign post said it was a half hour walk from the parking lot, and my aunt complained the entire way and said from here on out she would boycott nature. Cuando tenía 8 años, mi madre, mi tía y yo estábamos viajando por Kentucky y decidimos parar en el Puente Natural de Kentucky. Siempre lo recordaré porque la señalización dijo que la ruta tardía una media hora desde el aparcamiento, y mi tía se quejó por todo el camino y desde entonces iba a hacer boicot de la naturaleza.

I also remember a copperhead snake near the top, but it was much more dramatic hearing about than seeing. También recuerdo que había un serpiente de cabeza de cobre cerca del final, pero era más drámatica escuchar sobre ello que verlo.

I haven’t been back, although during university I went to the nearby Red River Gorge a lot to start my love of hiking. Nunca volví, aunque durante la universidad fui a menudo al cercano Barranco del Río Rojo para empezar mi amor por senderismo.

The State Resort Park is located off the Mountain Parkway near Red River Gorge in the Daniel Boone National Forest and is shared between Powell and Wolfe Counties. It’s about an hour’s drive from Lexington and two hours from my mom’s new house. El “State Resort Park” (un parque natural del estado con hoteles) está situado cerca del Mountain Parkway cerca del Barranco del Río Rojo en el Bosque Nacional Daniel Boone y es compartido por los condados de Powell y Wolfe. En coche, tarda sobre una hora de Lexington y dos horas de la casa nueva de mi madre.

I wanted to start the year off on the right foot, so on Jan. 1st, I started off with a short hike. Despite the frigid temperatures from the polar vortex, I was still wanting to go. As they say what you do on New Year’s Day is what you’ll do for the rest of the year, I wanted to start the year off by hiking. Quise empezar el año nuevo en buen pie, y el 1 de enero, empecé con una ruta corta. A pesar de los temperaturas congeladores del vórtice polar, todavía quería ir. Como se dice que lo que haces en el Año Nuevo es lo que harás el resto del año, quise empezar el año con una ruta de senderismo.

I stopped at a Waffle House for breakfast. Their food is not at all healthy but tasty. I had biscuits and gravy and hash browns to fuel me. Paré en un Waffle House para desayunar. I arrived to the park around 11:30 and turned into the wrong car park. I found one next to the “Lakeside Trail”, which passed by a frozen lake to the official trail to the Natural Bridge. Llegué al parque sobre las 11.30 y fui al parking incorrecto. Encontré un parking a lado de “LakesideTrail” (Ruta con vistas de lago), que iba por un lago congelado hasta la ruta oficial al Puente Natural.

It was a bit cold, but not so bad once I got moving. I wasn’t the only one out and about that morning. I was at the top in no time at all, and I went on to the lookout where the bridge can be seen in all it’s glory. It’s amazing what nature can do. Hacía frío, pero no era tan mal cuando empecé a moverme. No iba el único que estaba caminando esta mañana. No tardó nada en llegar al cima, y fui al mirador donde se puede ver el puente mejor. Es increíble lo que puede hacer la naturaleza.

I timed it from the lookout to the car park, and it was only a half hour. I don’t know how it took so long when I was 8, nor do I understand my aunt’s complaints about the trail now that I’ve done it as an adult. Cronometré el tiempo desde el mirador hasta el parking, y solo tardó una media hora. No sé porque tardamos tanto cuando tenía 8. Tampoco entiendo las quejas de mi tía sobre la ruta ahora que lo he hecho como adulto.

The state park is one of the four original Kentucky State Parks founded in 1927. It has been a tourist attraction since the Lexington and Eastern Railroad founded a park there in 1895. There are 20 miles/32 kilometres of trails throughout the park, which is located near Slade, Kentucky, off Exit 33 of the Mountain Parkway. In the summer, it is very popular with hikers and has many cabins and a few hotels/motels nearby. El parque estatal es uno de los cuatro originales del estado de Kentucky y se fundió en 1927. Ha sido una atración turística desde 1895, cuando el Lexington and Eastern Railroad fundió un parque allí. Hay 32 kilómetros de senderos en el parque, que está ubicado cerca de Slade, Kentucky, Salida #33 del Mountain Parkway. Since 2012, it’s a tradition that I go to the US to visit my mom for Christmas. Although I was born and raised in northern Ohio, halfway between Cleveland and Toledo in the middle of nowhere, my mom moved to Kentucky to be closer to her family after I went to the University of Kentucky for my journalism and Hispanic Studies degrees. Desde 2012, ha sido una tradición visitar a los EEUU para visitar a mi madre durante las vacaciones de Navidad. Aunque nací y me crecí en la parte norte de Ohio, mitad distancia entre Cleveland y Toledo por el quinto pino, mi madre se trasladó a Kentucky para estar más cerca a su familia después de fui a la Universidad de Kentucky para obtener mis dos carreras de periodismo y estudios hispánicos.

She moved closer to Louisville from the town close to Lexington she had been living in last year, and it’s still weird being in her new house. El año pasado, se trasladó a una casa más cerca a Louisville desde el pueblo cerca de Lexington donde estaba viviendo, y todavía me resulta extraño estar en su casa nueva.

We usually try to visit a couple of nearby places during my visit, and this year we had planned to go visit some covered bridges. When we were exploring the maps and saw how complicated it was to visit them, we decided to just go to Cincinnati for the day so I could be in my home state. The destination was Jungle Jim’s International Market, a supermarket that has food from all over the world as the name suggests. The first location opened in Fairfield, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati, in 1971 as a small produce stand and grew from there. Today it attracts over 82,000 shoppers a week and is something of a tourist attraction. A second location opened in Eastgate in 2012. El destino fue Jungle Jim’s International Market, un supermercado que tiene comida de todo el mundo, como el nombre surgiere. El primer Jungle Jim’s abrió en Fairfield, Ohio, un suburbio de Cincinnati, en 1971, como un puesto pequeño de vegetales y frutas y creció durante los años. Hoy en día atrae a 82.000 clientes la semana y es algo de una atracción turístico. Una segunda tienda abrió en Eastgate en 2012.

My mom was impressed with the supermarket. I had been in 2013, and both then and four years later I was left wanting with more in the Spanish section. It’s an impressive market. However, nothing can come close to actual Spanish food, and I’m not even a foodie! El supermercado le impresionó a mi madre. Ya había estado en 2013, y en 2013 y 2017 quería más opciones en la sección de España. Es un supermercado impresionante. Sin embargo, nada es como la comida española real y ni soy un foodie.

We stopped at Half-Priced Books too. There were some snow flurries, and the polar vortex was going on, so it wasn’t the longest trip ever. También paramos en la librería Half-Priced Books. Como algunos copas de nieve estaban cayendo, y había un vórtice polar, no era un viaje largo.

The next day, I had an opportunity to explore a new park near my mom’s new house. Broad Run Park opened in 2016 and is part of a Parklands project to create new and beautiful 21st century parks. Broad Run Park is located off Bardstown Road. There are short hiking trails, and I did one that was about 2 kilometres (I had to convert the marked 1.25 miles for that.) The park is close to Floyd Creek, and the frozen water made interesting ice waterfalls. El día siguiente, tenía una oportunidad para explorar un parque nuevo cerca de la casa nueva de mi madre. Broad Run Park abrió en 2016 y forma parte de un proyecto de Parklands para crear parques nuevos y bonitos para el siglo XXI. Está ubicado cerca de Bardstown Road. Hay senderos cortos. Hice uno que era unos 2 kilometros. El parque está cerca de Floyd Creek (arroyo), y el agua helado hizo unos cascadas interesantes.

Anyone who is visiting Louisville should check out the Parklands to get in contact with nature, as anyone who is visiting Cincinnati should check out Jungle Jim’s. Just don’t go when you’re hungry. Si estás visitando Louisville, deberías ir a los parques de Parklands para estar en contacto con la naturaleza, y si estás visitando Cincinnati, deberías visitar Jungle Jim’s. Pero te aconsejo no ir cuando tienes hambre.

Nature Photo Challenge Día 6: Red River Gorge

I was challenged to post one nature photo everyday for a week by Living the Q Life. I nominate anyone who wants to do it. Living the Q Life me ha dado el reto para subir una foto de naturaleza todos los días durante una semana. A cualquier persona que quiere participar puede hacerlo.

I went to the University of Kentucky. Before moving to Spain in 2008 (ignore the date in the picture), I took the best dog ever, Fallon Fey, to Red River Gorge, an hour or so away from Lexington, Kentucky. It was one of my favourite hiking places in university. Fui a la universidad de Kentucky. Antes de trasladarme a España en 2008 (ignora la fecha de la foto), llevé la mejor perra de historia, Fallon Fey, a Red River Gorge, a una hora de Lexington, Kentucky. Era unos de mis sitios preferidos para hacer senderismo en la universidad.

It’s my annual Christmas visit to the States, and while I was born and raised in Ohio, my mom moved to Kentucky when I was in university. This means I am having to spend 10 days in Kentucky. It never felt like home to me, even in uni, and I am surviving the best I can. Ya toca el viaje anual durante Navidades a los EEUU, y aunque nací y fui crecido en Ohio, mi madre se trasladó a Kentucky cuando estaba en la universidad. Este quiere decir que he tenido que pasar 10 días en Kentucky. Nunca me sentí en casa aquí, aunque fui a universidad aquí, y estoy sobreviviendo lo mejor que pueda.

I took an opportunity to take my mom to Serpent Mound, located in southern Ohio, during my visit here. It was great to be back in Ohio, for sure, although Spain is and always will be my real home. Aproveché y llevé a mi madre a Serpent Mound, situado en la parte sur de Ohio, durante mi visita aquí. Era genial estar en Ohio, aunque España es y será siempre mi casa real.

The drive took us through the back roads of Kentucky and southern Ohio. There were a lot of horse farms and the rolling green hills Kentucky is famous for. The bridge that took us across the Ohio River (Ohio means “great river” in Iroquois) was rather magnificent. Conducimos por las carreteras rurales de Kentucky y Ohio. Había muchos granjas con caballos y las colinas ondulantes verdes que da fama a Kentucky. El puente que nos llevó sobre el Río Ohio (Ohio significa “río grande” en Iroquois) era magnificente.

Another hour and a fill up for gas for $1.89, we arrived at Serpent Mound, a 1,348-foot 411 metre)-long, metre high effigy built on the Serpent Crater by the Fort Ancient culture or the Adena culture, perhaps built in relation to the summer and winter solstices due to its alignment with them. It’s located along the Ohio Brush Creek in Adams County, Ohio. It’s $8 to park. Although there wasn’t anyone to take the money and people are left on the honour system to pay the money in the winter, I recommend that people do pay the money as it goes to maintenance of the park. Después de una hora y media y una parada en una gasolinera ($1.89 por galón. 1 galón: 4,5 litros), llegamos a Serpent Mound, un efigie de 411 metros que tiene un metro de altura que fue construido por la cultura de Fort Ancient o la cultura Adena, quizas construido en relación al solsticio de invierno y verano. Está situado en el Arroyo Ohio Brush en el Condado Adamos, Ohio. Cuesta $8 estadounidenses para aparcar. Aunque no hay nadie para pagar en los meses del invierno y es el sistemo de honor para pagar, lo recomiendo porque el dinero va para pagar el mantienimiento del parque.

I climbed the stairs to the overlook to see the whole mound before walking around it and taking a bypass “moderate” walk along the creek. For anyone living in the Basque Country, this moderate walk would be very easy. It was a bit cold, but I had several layers on, prepared for the Ohio winter. If only it were snowing…Subí las escaleres de la platforma de observación para ver el “mound” antes de caminar alredador y hacer un desavío para caminar por el arroyo. Era “moderado”, pero para los que vivimos en Euskadi, el sendero “moderado” sería muy fácil. Hizo un frío de Vitoria o de Burgos, pero me vestí en tapas, preparado para el invierno de Ohio.

On the way back, after a stop for a healthy lunch of salads, we meandered through the town of Maysville, Kentucky. Located on the Ohio River, Maysville is a town of 9,000 people located in Mason County. It was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and it is the home of Rosemary Clooney (a singer probably now more famous for being George Clooney’s aunt). It is home of two bridges, the murals of the flood wall, and the Russell Theatre. It has a unique 19th century vibe, and walking through the streets you feel like you’re taking a step back in time. Por la vuelta, después de parar para comer unas ensaladas sanas, fuimos a pasear el pueblo de Maysville, Kentucky. Situado en el Río Ohio, Maysville es un pueblo de unos 9,000 habitantes ubicado en el Condado de Mason. Era una parada importante del “Underground Railroad”, y es el lugar de nacimiento de la cantante Rosemary Clooney (también conocida como la tía de George Clooney). Hay dos puentes, las murallas para proteger el pueblo de inudaciones, y el Teatro Russell. Tiene un ambiente de Siglo XIX, y paseando por las calles se siente como si fuera pasando por historia.

I may be more in tune with the Spanish way of life, but there are also amazing little places to be discovered no matter where you live. Aunque me encajo más con el estilo de vida español, hay sitios geniales para descrubir en cualquier sitio que vives.
