Luis García Berlanga and J.A. Bardem started out their career with the 1951 film (but not released until 1953) That Happy Couple. While made in the 1950s, the critiques it makes about Spanish society could still be made today in 2018. Luis García Berlanga y J.A. Bardem empezó sus carreras con la película española de 1951 (pero no había estreno hasta 1953) Esa pareja feliz. Aunque hecha en los años 1950, las criticas que hace sobre la sociedad española todavía tienen importancia hoy en día en 2018.

Juan (Fernando Fernán Gómez) and Carmen (Elvira Quintillá) are a struggling couple in Madrid, renting a room in a flat where they’re lucky to have a right to the kitchen. Juan works as a handyman for film studios, and Carmen’s a desperate housewife. When she enters a contest sponsored by their favourite brand of soap the same day Juan gets fired, their world changes when they actually win. Now they’re the “Happy Couple” and are treated to 24 hours of luxury. How will it affect them? Juan (Fernando Fernán Gómez) y Carmen (Elvira Quintillá) son una pareja madrileña con muchos problemas y pocos recursos. Alquilan una habitación en un piso donde tienen suerte porque tienen derecho a la cocina. Juan trabaja como de mantenimiento para un estudio de películas, y Carmen es una ama de casa desesperada. Cuando entra un concurso de su marca de jabón preferida el mismo día que despiden a Juan, su mundo giro por completo cuando ganan. Ahora son la “Pareja Feliz” y tienen 24 horas de lujo. ¿Cómo les va a afectuar? 

The film is a satire of 1950s values, of having to keep up appearances and of consumerism. If only they could see the 1980s, eh? It was interesting to see what got past the 1950s censors. I think the co-directors and co-scriptwriters were a bit ahead of their times. La película es una satira de los valores de los años 1950, de tener que parecer perfecto y de consumismo. Y ni han visto los años 1980s. Era interesante ver lo que era apropado por la censura de los años 1950s. Creo que los directores y guionistas eran precoces de su época. 

The film shows a lot of promise, especially for such novice directors. They also have a satire of the film industry in general with hysterical scenes of Juan at work. La película promete mucho, especialmente como eran directores novatos. También hay una sátira de la industria de cine en general con escenas graciosas del trabajo de Juan. 

I’m just getting started with the project, so I’m sure future entries will be more detailed. I’m a bit rusty, and I feel bad that I don’t have more to say. It’s meta before meta was a thing. The film deserves a better restoration though. It’s worth seeing just to see how the more things change…..Estoy empezando con el proyecto, y seguro que las entradas que viene serán mejor. Estoy un poco rancio, y me sabe mal que no tengo más de decir en la primera entrada. La película fue “meta” antes de “meta” era popular. Creo que merece una mejor restauración. Vale la pena verla solo para ver que lo más las cosas cambian….

The plot of Fernando Trueba’s 1992 Oscar and Goya winning film Belle Epoque could be summed up as “Horny Dude Meets Four Sisters.” El argumento de la película ganador de Goya de 1992 y Oscar por Mejor Película en No Habla Inglesa Belle Epoque puede ser resumido como “Un Tío Salido Conoce a Cuatro Hermanas.”

Sure, they make it appear more than that, and there’s a lot of hidden treasures within the horrible sounding plot. Nevertheless, the basic plot of the film is a horny dude finds himself in a house of four sisters. Vale, hay más de la película, y hay mucho bueno escondido con este argumento que suena fatal. Sin embargo, el argumento básico de la película es un tio salido se encuentra en una casa con cuatro hermanas. 

The year is 1931. The Second Spanish Republic was trying to come in power, and a young soldier named Fernando (Jorge Sanz) deserts from the army. After being arrested and released, he meets Manolo (Fernando Fernán Gómez), a local villageman who lives with his four daughters in an old countryhouse: Luz (Penélope Cruz), Clara (Miriam Díaz-Aroca), Violeta (Adriana Gil) and Rocío (Maribel Verdú).  El año es 1931. La Segunda República de España estaba luchando por poder, y un soldado joven, Fernando (Jorge Sanz), se desierta del ejército. Después de ser detenido por la policía y liberado, conoce a Manolo (Fernando Fernán Gómez), un hombre del pueblo quien vive con sus cuatro hijas en un casa rural: Luz (Penélope Cruz), Clara (Miriam Díaz-Aroca), Violeta (Adriana Gil) y Rocío (Maribel Verdú).

During the course of the film, he falls in love and um, consummates his love with each of the sisters. Clara is a widow who needed consoling. Violeta is a lesbian who, at a costume party, is irresistibly attracted to Fernando who is dressed as a woman and Rocío the social climber whose impending wedding into a wealthy royalist family is the source of comic relief due to the casting of Chus Lampreave as the mother of the groom and Gabino Diego as the groom. Rocío sleeps with Fernando in a moment of weakness. Luz, the innocent one, is jealous that Fernando hasn’t seduced her, so I’ll give you three guesses to which sister Fernando ends up with at the end of the film. (It’s not Clara, Violeta or Rocío.) Durante la película, se enamora y, er, consuma su amor con cada una de las hermanas. Clara es una viuda que le hace falta consuelo. Violeta es una lesbiana quien, en una fiesta de disfraces, está atraeda irresistiblemente a Feranando, quien está disfrazado como mujer. Rocío es una arribista quien está a punto de casarse con un hombre de una familia realista. Su boda es un punto de comedia con Chus Lampreave como la madre del novio y Gabino Diego como el novio. Rocío se acuesta con Fernando en un momento de debilidad. Y finalmente hay Luz, la inocente, quien está celosa de sus hermanos y quiere que Fernando le seduzca también. Ya puedes imaginar con cual hermana Fernando se encuentra al final de la película. (Ni Clara ni Violeta ni Rocío.)

The cast of the film combines some Spanish acting all stars. Fernando Fernán Gómez is like the grandfather of Spanish Cinema (he died in 2007). He appeared in several films in the late 1990s as the grandfather type, and he was such an anarchist in real life that his coffin was buried with an anarchist flag. Chus Lampreave, who 2016 death has been the saddest for me in the Year That Killed All The Celebrities, is always fantastic as the cranky mother/grandmother. Penélope Cruz was a newcomer, and Maribel Verdú later would appear in the Mexican classic Y tu mamá también and then El laberinto del fauna (Pan’s Labryinth). Verdú has a pair of Goyas, including Best Actress for the AMAZING Blancanieves in 2012. El reparto incluye unos de los actores más importantes del mundo del cine español. Fernando Fernán Gómez es como el abuelo del cine español (se murió en 2007). Apareció en muchas películas en los años 1990 como el abuelo, y en la vida real era tan anarquista que se enterró con la bandera anarquista. Chus Lampreave, cuya muerte ha sido la más triste en el año 2016, el año que ha matado a todos los famosos, siempre es fantástico como la madre abuela de mal humor. Penélope Cruz era una novata, y Maribel Verdú después hizo papeles importantes en Y tu mamá también y El laberinto del fauna. Ella tiene un par de Goyas, incluso una por su papel en la increíble Blancanieves en 2012. 

Speaking of Goyas, the film won several Goyas in 1993, including Best Film, Best Director (Trueba), Lead Actress for Adriana Gil, Supporting Actor for Fernando Fernán Gómez, Supporting Actress for Chus Lampreave, Screenplay, Cinematography, Production Design and Editing. It also won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Hablando de Goyas, esta película ganó bastantes Goyas en 1993, incluso Mejor Película, Mejor Director (Trueba), Mejor Actriz Principal por Adriana Gil, Mejor Actor de Reparto por Fernando Fernán Gómez, Mejor Actriz de Reparto por Chus Lampreave, Mejor Guión Original, Mejor Fotografía, Mejor Diseño Artística y Mejor Montaje. También ganó el Oscar por Mejor Película En Habla No Inglesa (¿estoy imaginando que se llama así?)

Does it live up to all the awards? I’m not sure. It was up against Jamón Jamón, (Penélope Cruz appeared on the scene big time in 1992), which is classic but for other reasons. The film depicts a period of Spanish history oft-forgotten about in film (as everything is about the actual Spanish Civil War), and the performances are great. It’s a good movie, but when you read all the accolades, you also expect something truly outstanding. For that reason, I don’t give it a full “A”, as hype always raises expectations. ¿Merece tantos premios y elogio? No sé yo. En las Goyas, estaba en competición con Jamón Jamón (1992 era el año que el mundo de cine español conoció a Penélope Cruz), que es un clásico pero por otras razones. El film representa una época que muchas veces se olvida en el cine (como todo es sobre la Guerra Civil Españala actual), y los actores son geniales. Es una buena película, sí, pero cuando escuchas todo el elogio, siempre te quedas con esperanzas de algo más. Por eso, no lo premio con un “A” (nota de 10 en EEUU), como siempre aumentar expectativas con cualquier elogio.
