Flat Hunting in Valencia, 2017.

I’m going to start the entry with a happy ending, so we can relax as we think about the nightmare it is to find a decent place to live. The seventh place I saw is a match, at least for the near future. I will be moving in at the end of the month. Voy a empezar esta entrada con el final feliz, para que podamos leer la entrada más relejada mientras pensamos de la pesadilla que es encontrar un buen sitio para vivir. El séptimo piso que vi es el piso donde voy a vivir, al menos para el futuro próximo.

This summer has been a rollercoaster of emotions and bad news along with the excitement and rush of the Camino del Norte. I will be starting the entries on the Camino del Norte on the 21st of August if all goes according to plan. Este verano ha sido una montaña rusa de emociones y noticias malas mezclado con la emoción del Camino del Norte. Voy a empezar con las entradas del Camino del Norte el 21 de agosto si todo va según plan.

I’ve decided to stay in Valencia and work on becoming a freelancer as it’s best I take a conscious uncoupling from my job. It’s going to be a rough few months but should be fine in the end. He decidido quedarme en Valencia y intentar hacerme autónomo porque es mejor que hago un “conscious uncoupling” de mi trabajo. Va a ser unos meses duros pero creo que al final me saldrá bien.

This means, as the owner of my flat decided to sell it (and the owner didn’t know my flatmate rented it out), I had to find a new place to live. Since my summer job unexpectedly ended two weeks before I thought it would, I found myself flat hunting in Valencia in August. Eso quiere decir, como el dueño del piso donde estaba quiere venderlo (y no sabía que mi antiguo compañero de piso me alquilaba la habitación, tendía que encontrar un sitio nuevo para vivir. Como de repente mi trabajo de verano ha terminado dos semanas antes de anticipada, me encontré buscando un piso en Valencia en el mes de agosto.

Spain shuts down in August. People are on holiday, and almost everything is closed. There were a few places, but the hunt did not go too well. España se cierra totalmente en agosto. La gente se va de vacaciones, y casí todo está cerrado. Había pocos sitios, y la busqueda no me fue muy bien.

The first place I saw sounded promising. We arranged to meet at 3 so I could see it. I arrived at 2:57. Rang the buzzer. It wasn’t working. I sent a Whatsapp and then called and continued trying the buzzer to no response. A half hour later, I left angry. A complete waste of time. El primer piso que vi prometía. Quedamos a las 3 para ver el piso. Llegué a las 2.57 y toqué el timbre. No estaba funcionando. Mandé un Whatsapp y después le llamé mientras seguía intentando llamar el timbre. Nunca me contestó. Una media hora después, me fui enfadado. Una pérdida de tiempo.

Second place looked great, and I got along with the potential flatmate. I was going to take it, but the guy decided that he didn’t want to rent it out after all. Me gustaba el segundo piso, y me caí bien con el compañero de piso potencial. Iba a cogerlo, pero el tío cambió de mente y no quería alquiler la habitación.

Third place was a gay couple who had an older place a bit out of the centre…and the couple didn’t want anyone in the living room, ever, not even me. El tercer piso era un piso antiguo donde vivía una pareja gay. Estaba algo lejos del centro…y la pareja no quería nadie en la salón de estar. Si no tengo derecho a la salón de estar…

Fourth place, I arrived to the owner fighting with someone who was looking at the room before me in the hallway. She showed me the place in about 2 minutes, and one of the potential flatmates was too busy smoking a cigarette (I don’t smoke and am, in fact, allergic to tobacco smoke, so yeah) to look up to say “hola”. It was dark, dingy and dirty. El cuatro piso, llegué para encontrar el dueño en el corridor discutiendo con alguien que estaba viendo la habitación antes de mí. Solo tardó dos minutos para mostrarme el piso. Una de las compañeras de piso potenciales estaba liado fumando un cigarillo y ni me podía decir “hola”. Además, no fumo y soy alérgico al humo de tabaco. Era un piso oscuro, cutre y sucio.

Fifth place was ok, but too expensive and I had no clue who I would be sharing it with. El quinto no estaba mal pero demasiado caro y no sabía con quien iba a compartir.

Sixth place, the flatmate wanted a flatmate with benefits. Um, no thank you. El sexo, el compañero quería un compañero de piso con derecho a roce. Um, no gracias.

Seventh place…a bit small and a bit more than I wanted to pay, but with only one other flatmate that seems nice and in the same barrio I lived in before on a quieter street. It seems win-win, but I had agreed to see a different place. The last place I saw would be perfect if I were already established in my goal or had a special someone to share the place with. El septimo…era un poco pequeño y un poquito más que quería pagar, pero con solo una persona más en el piso que me cae bien y está en el mismo barrio donde vivía antes pero en una calle más tranquila. Me parece muy bien, pero ya había dicho que iba a ver otro piso. El último piso sería perfecto si ya fuera más establecido en mi carrera o si tuviera alguien especial para compartir el piso conmigo.

In the end, I went with the seventh. Al final, he cogido el séptimo.

For now, I’m housesitting and catsitting for a friend in Madrid to save some cash while I wait until the end of the month to return to my beloved home, València. Ahora, estoy cuidando la casa y los gatos de un amigo en Madrid para ahorrar un poco de pasta mientras espero para finales del mes para volver a mi casa querida, València.

Speaking of saving cash, after the events of this summer, I’ve been using all of my savings. Had I known I wouldn’t have been returning to a job, I wouldn’t have gone on the Camino de Santiago and would have been able to find other employment. Alas, until September, there is nothing, so I’ve started a GoFundMe if anyone has 5-10€ to throw my way to help me out. Thanks in advance. Hablar de ahorrar dinero, después de lo que ha pasado este verano, he tenido que usar todos mis ahorros. Si hubiera sabido que no iba a tener trabajo después, no habría ido al Camino de Santiago y creo que habría encontrado otro empleo. I’ve been wanting to visit Bocairent(e) since 2011 when my co-workers were telling me about the most beautiful villages of la Comunitat Valenciana. Located about 95 kilometres (59 miles) from València capital in the comarca of La Vall d’Albaida, Bocairent is a beautiful village at an elevation of 680 metres (2230 feet) and has a population of 4357 residents. He querido visitar Bocairent(e) desde 2011 cuando mis compañeros de trabajo me estaban hablando de los pueblos más bonitos de la Comunitat Valenciana. Situado a unos 95 kilómetros desde València capital en la comarca de La Vall d’Albaida, Bociarent es un pueblo bonito y está ubicado en una elevación de 680 metros y tiene una población de 4357 habitantes.

I was going to go on my annual visit to Valencia in 2012, but they were having a horrible heat wave. My other visits were either at the weekends when there are less buses or during heat waves. I didn’t want to leave Valencia again without having visited the city, so I dealt with the current heat wave (it was only 34ºC/93ºF. Most of Spain and I know California and much of the US are under even hotter weather.) and changed my plans so I could at least visit the city. Quería ir en mi viaje anual a Valencia en 2012, pero estaba pasando una ola de calor horrible. Durante mis otras visitas a Valencia, era el fin de semana (cuando hay menos autobuses) o durante olas de calor. No quería irme de Valencia otra vez sin visitar la ciudad, entonces, aguanté la ola de calor (solo era 34º. La mayoría de España, California y otros sitios en los EEUU están pasando temperaturas aún más altas) y cambié mis planes para poder visitar el pueblo al menos.

I wanted to go on a hike through the Barranc dels Tarongers that starts in Ontinyent. It’s only about 11 km (6.8 miles), but with the heat, I didn’t want to risk heat stroke or dehydration or a really bad sunburn. I do use protection, but the Valencian sun is hot! Quería hcer una ruta por el Barranc dels Tarongers que empieza en Ontinyent. Solo es unos 11 kilómetros, pero con el calor, no quería arriesgar una insolación o deshidratarme o quemarme por el sol. Siempre uso protección solar ¡pero el sol valenciano es fuerte!

On weekdays, there are two buses that leave from Valencia Estación de Autobuses, and during weekends and summer holidays, only one with hours more convenient to people who live in the village than those wanting to just visit the village. I caught the 11:00 bus, and I was arrived about 12:50. We stopped at the bus garage in Ontinyent for some unknown reason for 10 minutes. Spain is different. En los días laborales, hay dos autobuses que salen desde la Estación de Autobuses de València. Durante los findes y el verano, solo hay uno que tiene horas más convenientes a los que viven en el pueblo que los que solo quieren visitarlo. Cogí el autobús a las 11:00, y llegué a las 12:50. Paramos en el garaje de autobuses durante unos 10 minutos por una razón desconocida. Spain is different.

I found my way to the tourist office inside the town hall to get my map before setting off to explore. It was hot, but I had water, sun block and a hat. I meandered the streets and admired the beautiful village. Was it worth the six-year wait? Yes. And I hope I don’t have to wait six years to go on those trekking routes. Encontré la oficina de turismo dentro del ayuntamiento para pedir una mapa antes de explorar el pueblo. Hizo bastante calor, pero tenía agua, protector solar y una gorra. Deambulé las calles y admiré el pueblo bonito. ¿Merecía la pena después de esperar durante 6 años para visitarlo? Sí. Y espero no tener que esperar seis años más para volver para hacer estas rutas de senderismo por la zona.

The Church of the Virgin de la Asunción is the highlight of the old town. I also enjoyed seeing the ermitas of the town. La iglesia de la Virgen de la Asunción es lo mejor del casco viejo. También disfruté de ver las ermitas del pueblo.

There wasn’t a whole lot open on a hot Wednesday in June. There was a decent resaurant, Casa Chimon, that was open in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where I enjoyed a decent paella and grilled chicken for 12€. No había mucho abierto un miércoles caluroso de junio. Había un restaurante decente, Casa Chimon, en la Plaza de ayuntamiento, que estaba abierto. Comí una buena paella y pollo a la plancha por 12€.

After lunch, I had about an hour before the return bus to València. I decided to see how high I could walk to the monastery on the mountain next to the town. I would have made it all the way to the top if it hadn’t been for the heat. It still offered the best views of the town, and I’m glad I did part of it. Después de comer, tenía una hora antes del autobús de vuelta a València. Decedí caminar tan lejos como podía al monasterio en el monte a lado del pueblo. Si no hiciera tanto calor habría podido llegar al cima. Todavía ofreció las mejores vistas del pueblo, y me alegro haber hecho un poco de ello.

I’m definitely glad I made it here before leaving Valencia, and I definitely want to do that trek between Ontinyent and Bocairent one day, preferably in autumn. Estoy super contento haber visitar Bocairent antes de irme de València, y un día, preferiblemente en el otoño, me gustaría hacer la ruta entre Ontinyent y Bocairent.

Desert de les Palmes.

Located near the popular tourist destination Benicàssim, the Desert de les Palmes (Desierto de las Palmas in Spanish) is a delightful surprise. A close friend took me there recently, and I wish it hadn’t been so hot so I could’ve taken advantage of the incredible hiking opportunties there. Situado a lado del destino turístico popular Benicàssim, el Desierto de los Palmas (Desert de les Palmes en valenciano) es una joya llena de sorpresas. Un amigo cercano me llevó allí. Ojalá no hiciera tanto calor para poder aprovechar las oportunidades increíbles de senderismo allí.

It has been a Natural Park since 1989. In 1985 and 1992 it unfortunately experienced two wildfires. There are some interesting ruins of a monastery near a beautiful lookout and a restaurant, where my friend and I had lunch with amazing views of the Palmes and Benicàssim below. Ha sido un Parque Natural desde 1989. En los años 1985 y 1992, lamentable sufrió dos incendios grandes. Hay unas ruinas interesantes de un monasterio cerca de un mirador bonito y un restaurante, donde mi amigo y yo comemos con las vistas impresionantes de las Palmas y Benicàssim.

The highest peak is Bartolo with 729 metres (2391 feet). The mountain range is 18.8 km (11.7 miles) long. The Prime Meridan crosses the park in the middle and on clear days, the Islas Columbretes can be seen. La pica más alta es Bartolo con 729 metros. Los montes tienen una extensión de 18,8 kilometros y el primer meridiano cruce el parque casí por el medio. En días claras, se puede ver las Islas Columbretes.

It’s a place I would love to explore more. I will probably have a chance in September. Es un sitio me encantaría explorar aún más. Creo que tendré la oportunidad en septiembre.

Serra Calderona.

The Serra Calderona is a mountain range near the Valencia capital located between the provinces of Valencia and Castellón. I had gone once before with a friend to El Garbí back in October, and when I had the opportunity to go with my school on an excursion, I seized the day. La Serra Calderona es una cordillera cerca a la capital de València situado entre las provincias de Valencia y Castellón. He ido una vez antes con un amigo a El Garbí en octubre, y cuando tenía la oportunidad ir en una ruta de senderismo con el instituto donde trabajo, la aproveché.

It took about a half hour from Valencia. We stopped near the village of Serra and climbed to the nearby Mirador de Resbaladores. The views were, as always, spectacular. We had lunch at the Mirador. Tarda sobre una media hora desde València capital. Paramos cerca del pueblo de Serra y subimos al Mirador de Resbaladores. No estaba muy lejos. Las vistas eran, como siempre, espectaculares. Comemos en el Mirador.

It was a circular route. It was nice to have a guide explain to us more about the history of hiking the mountains and why they were trails (they had to find the easiest way to the summit.) The day ended with a visit to Serra, a quaint village of 3074 residents, where the bus was waiting to take us back to Valencia. Era una ruta circular. Me gustaba tener un guía explicarnos todo de la historia de senderismo de la Serra Calderona y porque había senderos (tenían que buscar la manera más fácil a la cima.) El día terminó con una visita a Serra, un pueblo pintoresco de 3074 habitantes, donde el autobús estaba esperándonos para llevarnos a Valencia.

I have to say, this was one of the better excursions I have gone on with a school in Spain. I wasn’t paying too much attention to the climb and just enjoying the moment. I also had to make sure that none of the students were in the photo for various Spanish privacy laws. He de decir que era uno de las mejores excursiones que he tenido con un colegio en España. No hice mucho caso a la subida y disfruté del momento. No hice muchas fotos porque hay leyes de privacidad en España y no quería que saliera ningún alumno en una foto del blog.

Parque Fluvial del Turia: La Presa-Riba-roja.

I did a stretch of the 35-km long Parque Fluvial del Turia back in February, and I’ve been wanting to see this famous dam I didn’t make it to then. I was recovering from a cold, so I didn’t want to do much, but I did want to do something now that my time in Valencia is most likely coming to a close. Hice una parte de los 35 kilómetros del Parque Fluvial del Turia en febrero, y he querido volver para ver la presa conocida. No llegué en febrero. Este fin de semana, estaba recuperando de un constipado y no quería hacer mucho, pero quería hacer algo como mi tiempo en Valencia está acabándome.

On a lazy spring Sunday afternoon, I decided to stop being lazy and caught the Valencia metro (Line 9) to stop La Presa (dam in Spanish). It was about a 20-minute walk to the dam, and, of course, I got confused by Google Maps. I found myself there anyway and took some time to enjoy the beauty. Una tarde tranquila de primavera, dejé de hacerme el vago y cogí la línea 9 del metro de Valencia hasta la parada La Presa. Tardé sobre 20 minutos en caminar a la presa, y claro, como siempre, me confundí con Google Maps. Encontré el camino correcto y tomé tiempo para disfrutar de la belleza.

I decided to walk on to the nearby village Riba-Roja de Túria, a town of 21,499 residents located at the end of Line 9 on the Valencia metro. Después, decidí caminar a un pueblo cercano, Riba-Roja de Túria. Es un pueblo de 21.499 personas ubicado al final de la Línea 9 del metro de Valencia.

It was an easy and pretty walk, perfect for this time of year, by the Río Turia. I liked the bridges. There were a few people out for a Sunday stroll, and even more bikers. Era un paseo fácil y bonito, perfecto para hacer en este época del año, a lado del Río Turia. Me gustaban mucho los puentes. Había bastante personas paseando, como era domingo, y había aún más ciclistas.

The Parque Fluvial is perfect for strolls, and for those who want something more active, they can do more kilometres. El Parque Fluvial es perfecto para pasear, y para los que quieren ser más activo, siempre hay más kilómetros para andar.

Spoon Me! Cullera and its mountain

Located on the Mediterranean Sea about 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of the Valencian capital, Cullera, population 22,461 (2014 statistics), is a popular summer beach destination. It’s located on the mouth of the River Júcar. Its name is proudly painted onto the Cullera Mountain/Fox Mountain (Monte de los Zorros), which can be seen from a long ways away. Situado en el Mar Mediterraneo a unos 40 kilómetros al sur de València capital, Cullera, población 22.461 (según estadísticas de 2014) es un destinto popular en el verano para su playa. Está ubicado en la boca del Río Júcar. Su nombre está pintado en el Monte de Cullera, también conocido como el Monte de los Zorros, y se puede ver desde mucha distancia.

Its name is Valencian for spoon. Su nombre significa “cuchara” en valenciano.

I had once visited when I previously lived in Valencia, in 2011, and it was one of my favourite villages. I hiked out to the lighthouse on a nice spring day, and I’ve always wanted to return for further exploring. I wasn’t about to leave Valencia without visiting it once again. Había estado una vez antes en 2011, cuando viví en València antes, y era uno de mis pueblos preferidos. Caminé hasta el faro en un día bonita de primavera, y siempre he querido volver para explorarlo más. No iba a irme de València sin vistarla otra vez.

As 1 May is a holiday in a large part of Europe, I took advantage of a free Monday to go hiking near Cullera. The route I took starts near the cemetery, which is near the train station. I arrived around 10:15 (I slept in) and took off. Como el 1 de mayo es festivo en mucho de Europa, aproveché de un lunes libre para hacer una ruta de senderismo cerca de Cullera. La ruta que hice empieza cerca del cementerio, que está cerca a la estación de trenes. Llegué sobre las 10.15 (dormí tarde) y empecé la ruta.

The trail, for the most part, is easy to follow and well-marked. I came to a point that had a steep drop or went up the rocky mountain side. I backtracked to see if I could find the marks…reply hazy. I climbed the rocks a bit, and I saw nothing. I decided to go with my instinct and went down on the obvious trail. Lo and behold…a few metres later I saw the yellow and white mark. La ruta era fácil seguir y buen señalado…para la mayoría de la ruta. Llegué a una bifurcación que tenía un pendiente abajo o pendiente arriba por una parte rocosa. Volví para ver si podía encontrar los señales. No. Subí por las rocas un poco, y vi nada. Decidí ir con mi instinto y seguí por abajo. A unos metros después vi el señal de amarillo y blanco.

The route took me around the mountain to the castle. There is a much shorter access to the castle and sanctuary, along with a parking lot, near the castle. This had a lot of people. I stopped for a breakfast of café con leche and tostada before at the nearby café. It was only 2€. I was shocked as it was at such a touristy spot. La ruta me llevó por el monte hasta el castillo. Hay una ruta mucha más corta al castillo y santuario, con aparcamiento, cerca del castillo. Había mucha gente. Paré para desayunar una tostada con tomate y café con leche a lado del castillo que solo me costó 2€.

I continued the route along the mountain, which is 233 metres tall (764 feet. Not that high but still!) and made good time to the lighthouse, which said it took about an hour and a half. I did it in about an hour and ten minutes, stopping for photo opportunities of the nearby Albufera Natural Park and the Mediterranean Sea. Seguí la ruta por el monte, que tiene 233 metros de altura) y hice buen tiempo en llegar al faro. El señal dijo que tardaría sobre una hora y media. Lo hice en sobre una hora y 10 minutos, parando para hacer fotos del cercano Parque Natural de Albufera y el Mar Mediterráneo.

The lighthouse was just as I remembered it. I went back into the town (the lighthouse is about 3 kilometres away by my calculations. The train station is also a bit far out from what’s considered the centre, and I went walking there after lunch). El faro era como lo recordaba. Volví al centro del pueblo (el faro está a unos 3 kilómetros según mis calculas) La estación de Renfe también está lejos del centro, y volví a la estación a pie.

I’ve had quite a lot of opportunities for hiking, and this has been one of my favourites yet. He tenido bastantes oportunidades para hacer senderismo, y este ha sido uno de mis favoritos.

Penyagolosa.

For many years, Penyagolosa was thought to be the highest mountain in the Comunitat Valenciana. Turns out, it’s the second highest mountain after the Alto de Barracas in Ademus, which is 1839 metres (6,033 feet) compared to Penyagolosa’s 1813 metres (5948 feet). Nevertheless, Penyagolosa is the most emblematic mountain of Valencia. Durante muchos años, Penyagolosa era considerado el monte más alto de la Comunitat Valenciana. Ahora sabemos que es el monte segundo más alto después del Alto de Barracas en Ademuz, que tiene 1839 metros de altura. Penyagolosa solo tiene 1813 metros. Sin embargo, Penyagolosa es el monte más emblemático de Valencia.

The second weekend of May, I had my opportunity to explore this beautiful mountain, located 2 hours from Valencia capital in the province of Castellón. It was another hiking trip with Samarucs, the LGBT+ sports group of Valencia. El segundo fin de semana de mayo, tenía una oportunidad para explorar este monte precioso. Está a unas 2 horas en coche de Valencia capital en la provincia de Castellón. Era otra excursión con Samarucs, el grupo deportivo LGBT+ en Valencia.

We left Friday afternoon, and everyone had arrived by 7:30. We stayed at the Hospedería Sant Joan de Penyagolosa, a sanctuary located 1200 metres above sea level in the heart of Penyagolosa. Most of the hiking routes begin at this famous sanctuary which was built sometime after the conquests of Jaume I (Jaime 1) of Aragón. It’s always interesting to stay in a place with such history. Salimos miércoles por la tarde, y a las 19.30, todos habíamos llegado. Nos alojamos en la Hospedería Sant Joan de Penyagolosa, un santuario ubicado a 1200 metros sobre el mar. La mayoría de las rutas empiezan en este santuario famoso que era construido después de las conquistas de Jaume I (Jaime 1) de Aragón.

Saturday morning, after breakfast, we headed to the Centre of Interpretation, which explained the history of the mountain villages like Vistabella and Xodos and how they used to live. There was also a 10-minute film about the mountain and its flora and fauna. Sábado por la mañana, después de desayunar, fuimos al Centro de Interpretación, donde nos explicó la historia de los pueblos del monte como Vistabella y Xodos y como vivían en el pasado. También había una película corta de 10 minutos sobre el monte y su flora y fauna.

After the half-hour visit, we left knowing more about the mountain we were about to explore. Saturday’s route was La Ruta de Batalla, about 14 kilometres through forest trails and mountain passes. Everything was beautiful. We stopped for a break at the Batalla lookout, admiring the nearby mountain views. Castellón is one of the most mountainous regions of Spain. In the distance we could see rain clouds. Después de la visita de media hora, salimos sabiendo más sobre el monte que ibamos a explorar. La ruta de sábado era la Ruta de Batalla, una ruta de unos 14 kilómetros que pasa por mucho bosque y por mucha montaña. Todo era precioso. Paramos por un descanso en el mirador de Batalla, admirando las vistas de los montes cercanos. Me han explicado que Castellón es uno de las provincias más montañosas de España. En la distancia podemos ver nubes de lluvia.

We stopped to eat near an abandoned masía (farmhouse), which offered amazing views of Penyagolosa’s peak. Paramos para comer a lado de una masía abandonada. Había vistas increíbles del pico de Penyagolosa.

After finishing the hike around 16:15, we stretched and had free time until dinner. Some people took a siesta, some played an interesting game of Parchesí (a board game I will have to try sometime) or going to the nearby villages of Vistabella and Xodos. Después de terminar la ruta sobre las 16.15, estiramos y tuvimos tiempo libre hasta la cena. Algunos se echaban una siesta, algunos jugamos un partido interesante de Parchesí (un juego de mesa que me gustaría probar jugar) y algunos iban a los pueblos cercanos de Vistabella y Xodos.

The weekend happened to correspond with Eurovision, that horribly cheesy and amazing at the same time music festival. I try to avoid it because…well…but I was drawn in a little at just how bad Spain’s performance was. We came in dead last this year. Spain is different! El fin de semana coincidió con Eurovisión, la competición de música que es a la misma vez cutre y genial. Suelo evitarlo porque…bueno…pero este año me enganchó la actuación de España porque era horrible. España era la última este año. Spain is different.

Sunday’s route was straight up the mountain. We awoke and had breakfast, and we left Sant Joan to climb the mountain. The route wasn’t too hard, especially for those of us who have already climbed Puig Campana. It went through some beautiful mountain landscapes, which, if there had been water in the dry river bed, would have been even more beautiful. It took about two hours to climb from the Sanctuary, which included a 10 minute break. La ruta de domingo era para subir el monte. Nos despertamos y desayunamos, y salimos Sant Joan para subir el pico. La ruta no era muy difícil, especialmente para los que subimos el Puig Campana. Pasaba por paisajes bonitos del monte. Si hubiera agua en el cauce, estaría aún más hermosa. Tardamos sobre dos horas para subir desde el santuario, y eso era con un descanso de unos 10 minutos.

Making it to the top gives a feeling of accomplishment, and the views were amazing. The company was even better. We took a lot of photos and felt a sense of pride, gay and otherwise. Llegar al cima nos daba un sentimiento de habar logrado algo. Las vistas eran espectaculares. La compañía era aún mejor. Hicimos bastantes fotos y nos sentimos orgullo…gay y también de llegar a la cima.

The trip back down went quicker, and we ate at the picnic tables outside the sanctuary before taking one last carajillo, one of the most popular drinks of the weekend. In the province of Castellón, they make carajillos by burning rum or brandy for a few minutes before adding coffee. I had to try one because fire is fun. Nos bajamos más rápido que subimos, y comemos en las mesas de picnic fuera del santuario antes de tomarnos el último carajillo, uno de las bebidas más populares del fin de semana. En la provincia de Castellón, hacen carajillos. Se quema ron o coñac durante unos minutos antes de añadir café. Tenía que probarlo porque el fuego es divertido.

I thought about various Camino blogs and their stories of the albergues, so here goes my commentary on the hospedería, which is my own opinion and not necessarily the opinion of anyone else who went. I lucked out with ensuite bathroom, but most people had to share bathrooms and showers. The heating was decent inside the room but a bit chilly in the halls. Friday night’s dinner wasn’t too great, but the dinner on Saturday was much better. The beds were adequate, but you could hear people snoring in other rooms. Some rooms had bunk beds. No reports of bed bugs. The staff was excellent. Me acordaba de varios blogs sobre el Camino de Santiago y sus historias de los albergues. Entonces, voy a hacer algo de comentario (que es mi opinión y no necesariamente la opinión de todos). Tenía suerte para tener una habitación con un baño dentro, pero la mayoría de la gente que se aloja tiene que compartir baños y duchas. La calefacción estaba buena dentro de la habitación (demasiada para algunas), pero hacía frío en los pasillos. La cena de viernes no me gustaba mucho a mí, pero la cena de sábado era mucho mejor. Las camas eran adecuadas, pero se puede escuchar alguna gente roncar desde otras habitaciones. Algunos habitaciones tenían literas. No había chinches. El personal de la hospedería era muy buena gente, de categoría.

The weekend was a fantastic experience for everyone who went. Every time Samarucs puts together a hiking excursion, it’s a fantastic experience. A special thanks goes out to the guide, the coordinators and everyone who went. El fin de semana era una experiencia fantástica (¡DE CATEGORÍA!para todos que fuimos. Cada vez que Samarucs monta una excursión de senderismo, es una experiencia fantástica. Muchas gracias al guía, los coordinadores y todos que fuimos.

It was high time I started preparing for the Camino del Norte this summer. Ya tocaba volver a preparar para el Camino del Norte este verano.

The Camino de Requena that takes peregrinos from Valencia to the Camino de la Lana passes through some beautiful landscapes and interesting towns. I’m not sure how much more of it I will do to be honest, but I definitely enjoyed a short etapa to get me back into the swing of things. El Camino de Requena que lleva peregrinos desde València al Camino de la Lana pasa por paisajes bonitos y pueblos interesantes. No sé cuanto más de este Camino voy a hacer para ser sincero, pero disfruté de una etapa corta para volver a la “rutina” del Camino.

I caught a “late” train around 9:30 and found myself in Chiva, the small town of 13,494 people, where I had left the Camino in February. After a quick second breakfast of café con leche and tostada con tomate, I found my way back to the Camino, only taking one wrong turn to get out of town. I am horrible with Google Maps. Cogí un tren sobre las 9.30 (algo “tarde” para hacer una ruta) y me encontré en Chiva, un pueblo de 13.494 personas, donde dejé el Camino en febrero. Después de un segundo desayuno de café con leche y tostada con tomate, encontré el Camino, y solo me perdí una vez para encontrar la salida del pueblo. Soy un desastre con el app de Google Maps.

It was only 11 kilometres to Bunyol (Valencian), home of the Tomatina. Buñol (Spanish) has nearly 10,000 residents when people aren’t throwing tomatoes at each other. The 11 kilometres goes through more agriculture areas with beautiful mountains in the distance. It was either paved or dirt road walking the entire way. A few locals were walking, but I have yet to see any peregrino on either Camino route. Solo había 14 kilómetros entre Bunyol (valenciano) y Chiva. Buñol es el hogar de la fiesta famosa La Tomatina y tiene casí 10.000 habitantes cuando la gente no están tirándose tomates. Los 11 kilómetros pasan por zonas de agricultura con montes bonitos en la distancia. O era carretera o un sendero de tierra todo el camino. Había unas personas de la zona caminando, pero todavía no he visto ningún peregrino en este Camino (y tampoco vi peregrinos por el Camino de Levante).

There isn’t a lot more to say. It was a peaceful, ZEN like day (which I really needed after some major setbacks). No hay mucho más decir. Era un día de paz y con mucho ZEN, que me hacía falta después de unas complicaciones grandes de la vida.)

I arrived to the train station in Buñol just in time to catch the 12:55 train, so it was a really short day, only two hours. It leaves me in a good position to take it back up whenever I want if I decide to. Llegué a la estación de tren de Buñol para coger el tren a las 12:55, entonces, fui un día muy corto, solo dos horas. Me deja en una buena posición para volver al Camino cuando quiera si elegir volver a ese camino.

Located at the border of the provinces of València and Alacant (Alicante), Benicadell has long been an important mountain. Spanish hero El Cid had a castle there, and the “Cantar de Mio Cid” refers to the mountain as “Peña Cadiella.” It’s located between the Valle de Albaida (València) and Condado de Cocentaina (Alicante) comarcas (think counties or townships for the midwesterners). It is 1104 metres (3622 feet) high. Situado en la frontera de las provincias de València y Alicante, Benicadell siempre ha sido un monte importante. El héroe nacional El Cid tenía un castillo allí, y “El Cantar de Mio Cid” refiere al monte como “Peña Cadiella”. Está entre las comarcas Valle de Albaida (València) y Condado de Cocentaina (Alicante) y tiene 1104 metros de altura.

I had the opportunity to hike this famous Valencian peak last weekend. Once again, I went with the Valencian LGBT+ sports group Samarucs. We met at the usual meeting point of Torres de Quart in València. The destination was the village Ràfol de Salem, population 423, which is 96 kilometres (59 miles) from Valencia. Tenía la oportunidad subir este monte valenciano famoso el fin de semana pasado. Otra vez, fui con el grupo deportivo LGBT+ de València, Samarucs. Quedamos a las 8.00 en el mismo sitio de siempre, los Torres de Quart en València. El destino era el pueblo de Ràfol de Salem, población 423, a 96 kilómetros de València.

The journey was about an hour, and after a coffee, we had a decision to make about which route we wanted to take. We had the option of a shorter route from a parking lot/car park about halfway up the mountain. I went with the longer option, of course. El viaje tardó sobre una hora, y después de tomar un café, tuvimos que hacer una decisión. Había una opción de hacer una ruta más corta que salió de un aparcamiento más arriba, sobre la mitad de distancia del camino. Desde luego fui con la opción más larga.

The trail goes through a beautiful forest, and although throughout the day we had to climb 800 metres, it wasn’t too steep. The hike actually went by flying for most of us as we were talking and taking in the beautiful views. La ruta pasa por un bosque bonito, y aunque durante el día subimos 800 metros de desnivel, no tenía un pendiente muy fuerte. La ruta nos pasábamos volando para la mayoría como estábamos charlando y disfrutando de las vistas bonitas.

When my group reached the car park, we stopped for a brief rest and to recharge, as we still had half the hike left. The first group had already left, and they stopped to see an old nevara, which was once used to keep the winter snow cold to keep food and other things cold until the 1950s. The group that did the longer trek saw it on the way back. Cuando mi grupo llegó al parking, nos descansamos durante unos 10 minutos para recargar pilas. Todavía nos quedaba la mitad del camino. El otro grupo ya había salido, y fueron a ver una nevara antigua, donde, hasta los años 1950, guardaban nieve del invierno para guardar comida y otras cosas fresquitas en el verano.

There were quite a few hikers this Sunday morning in early spring. A few trees had started to bloom. Someone mentioned the peak bloom time to see all the flowers would be in May. The higher we climbed, the more beautiful the views were. No éramos los únicos senderistas este domingo de primavera. Unos arboles ya habían empezado a florecer. Alguien explicó que la mejor época para ver las plantes florecen era en mayo. Lo más alto que subimos, lo más bonitas eran las vistas.

We met up with the first group around 12:30 at the peak. Some of us went to the very top, which was rocky and could cause vertigo. It wasn’t too dangerous if you proceeded with caution, and it was well worth it. El otro grupo estaba esperándonos cuando llegamos al cima. Algunos fuimos al cima más alto, que es muy rocoso y puede causar vertigo. No es muy peligroso si utilizas mucha precaución. Valía la pena.

We took a different route back down. The mountain has various trails which lead to various villages around the mountain. We passed an old house in ruins. We ate our packed lunches at a picnic area under some trees, enjoying the company and the views. Bajamos por otra ruta. El monte tiene varios sendos que van a varios pueblos por el monte. Pasamos una casa en ruinas. Comemos en una área de picnic bajo arboles, disfrutando la buena compañía y las vistas.

One group lingered over lunch while the other set off to finish the trail to Ràfol de Salem. It took about an hour to reach the village, and the trail down was even more beautiful than the trail going up. At one point the trails merged, so it could be used as a circular route. The trail wasn’t too difficult. Algunos quedaban más tiempo para descansar y bajar en coche mientras otros fuimos a acabar el sendero a Ràfol de Salem. La ruta tardó sobre una hora para llegar al pueblo. La bajada era aún más bonito que la subida. En un punto, los senderos mezclan, y se puede hacer una ruta circular. La ruta no era muy difícil.

It was another great excursion and a fantastic way to spend a Sunday. Era otra excursión genial y una manera fantástica para pasar un domingo.

I feel I can now officially say I am a valenciano after hiking to the top of Puig Campana, the second highest mountain in the province of Alicante (after Aitana). The mountain is one of the most emblematic of the Comunitat Valenciana. Ahora, creo que ya puedo decir que soy valenciano verdadero después de subir el Puig Campana, el monte segundo más alto de la provincia de Alicante. (Aitana es el monte más alto). Puig Campana es uno de los montes más emblemático de la Comunitat Valenciana.

The mountain, whose name is Valenciano-Catalán for “Bell Hill” (and it is much more than a hill, vamos) is 1410 metres (4,625 feet) which makes it the third highest mountain I’ve hiked after Jamboba in La Rioja and Gorbea in Euskadi. El monte, cuyo nombre significa “Colina de Campana” en valenciano-català (y vamos, es mucho más que una colina) tiene 1410 metros de altura. Es el tercer monte más alto que he subido después de Jamboda en La Rioja y Gorbea en Euskadi.

The mountain has a lot of legends, including one about a fight at the summit between Charlemagne’s commander La Brèche de Roland and the Moorish army captain. Roland was ready to kill his opponent and missed, which caused a part of the mountain to fly into the sea. This part of the mountain is Benidorm Island. French Professor B. Granier has proven this to be false. Meanie. Another version says Roland’s lover Alda was to die at sunset, so he cut out part of the mountain to make the sun stay a few minutes longer. Hay muchos leyendas sobre el monte, incluso una sobre una lucha en la cima entre el comandante de Carlomango La Brèche de Roldán y el capitán del ejercito moro. Roldán estaba a punto de matar a su adversario pero le perdió, que causó una parte del monte caerse al mar. La parte del monte que se cayó ahora es la Isla de Benidorm. El profesor frances B. Granier ha mostrado que la leyenda es falsa. Aguafiestas. Otra versión dice que la amante de Roldán, Alda, iba a morirse al atardecer. Para tenerla unos momentos más, Roldán se cortó una parte del monte para que el sol se viera más tiempo.

The hike is not an easy one. I went with Samarucs, a gay sports club in Valencia, and we left Torres de Quart around 8:30. The time change was the day before, and I think most everyone was extra tired. It did give us an extra hour of light to find our way back to the cars at the end of the day. La ruta no es una ruta fácil. Fui con Samarucs, un club deportivo gay en Valencia, y salimos de Torres de Quart sobre las 8.30. El cambio de hora era el día anterior, y creo que todos estábamos más cansado que normal. Lo bueno es que nos daba una hora extra de sol para volver a los coches al final del día.

It’s about an hour and a half from Valencia cap i casal, as they refer to Valencia city in Valencian. We began the ascent around 10:30, and while not an easy one, it is a beautiful one. El viaje de Valencia tarda sobre una hora y media desde Valencia cap i casal (como se refiere a Valencia en valenciano). Empezamos la ruta sobre las 10.30, y aunque no sea la ruta más fácil, es una ruta súper bonita.

The path we took from the parking near Finestrat, (population 6137) snaked up and around the mountain like a snail. The views were, as always, spectacular. The paths were narrow. The mountain Aitana was nearby. The mountains are part of the Prébetico range. El sendero que tomamos desde el parking cerca de Finestrat (población 6137) giró sobre el monte como un caracol. Las vistas, como siempre, eran espectaculares. Los senderos eran estrechos. Siempre se puede ver el monte cercano Aitana. Los montes forman parte del Sistema Prébetico.

We took a break in a clearing, el Coll Pouet. In true introvert fashion, I found a beautiful German Shepherd mix to make friends with. I am a huge dog person and look forward to that day I have a stable job in a coastal village near Valencia or Barcelona and can have two goldens and a German Shepherd. Descansamos en un collado, el Coll Pouet, bajó unos arboles. Como el introvertido que soy, encontré una pastor alemán y hice buenas migas con ella. Me encantan los perros y me da mucha ilusión pensar en el día que ya tenga trabajo fijo en un pueblo de la costa cerca de Valencia o Barcelona y pueda tener dos golden retrievers y un German Shepherd.

We still had 2.1 kilometres (1.3 miles) to the top. Here is where things got interesting. Due to the loose stones that cover the path, gravity, and the narrowness of the path (that is hard to see to begin with), getting to the top can be a bit risky. Every time the stones slipped beneath me, I thought I was going to plummit to my death. I don’t think it was THAT dangerous, but it COULD be if you don’t proceed with a lot of caution. Going down was even more nervewrecking. Todavía nos quedaban 2,1 kilómetros hasta la cima. Era intersante para subir. Dado a las piedras sueltas que cubren el sendero, la gravidad y el sendero estrecho (que apenas se puede ver), subir hasta la cima es un poco arriesgado. Cada vez las piedras deslizaron, pensaba que iba a caerme a la muerte. No creo que sea tan peligroso, pero PODRÍA ser si no andas con mucha precaución. Bajar el monte me puso aún más nervioso.

The views became even more impressive the higher we got. We eventually arrived at the summit and admired the views while we ate lunch. Cuanto más alto subimos, cuanto más impresionante eran las vistas. Por fin llegamos a la cima y admiramos las vistas mientras comemos.

What goes up must come down, and after an hour or so of eating and resting, it was time to head back. There were times I wanted to just give up because of how scared of falling I was. I slipped a few times but did not fall. Lo que sube hay que bajar. Después de una hora de descanso y comer, ya tocaba la vuelta. A veces quería rendirme y sentarme en el suelo dado al miedo de caerme que tenía. Me resbalé algunas veces, pero no me caí.

The original plan was go continue from Coll Pouet around the other side of the mountain, but someone in the group had a really bad leg cramp, and going back the way we came was the easier option so not to cause potential further damage. The way back had different views, and the lowering sun over the mountains made them even more beautiful on the way back. El plan era seguir desde Coll Pouet por el otro lado del monte, pero alguien tenía un calambre muy doloroso y era más fácil volver por el mismo camino para evitar una lesión grave. Sin embargo, la vuelta tenía vistas distintas, como el sol ya estaba bajándose. Los montes eran aún más preciosos con el atardecer.

It was nearly 19:00 by the time we arrived the car park/parking lot. We stretched and had something to drink at the nearby bar which was technically closed. Casí era las 19.00 cuando llegamos al parking. Hicimos estiramientos y nos tomamos algo en el bar a lado del parking, que técnicamente estaba cerrado.

It was a good day, and I’m definitely glad to have found Samarucs. Each excursion has taken me to incredible places I might not have discovered on my own, and although yes, es mejor estar sólo que en mal acompañado…it’s even better to be in great company. Era un día genial, y me alegro haber encontrado Samarucs. Cada excursión me ha llevado a sitios increíbles que nunca habría descubierto. Aunque sí, es mejor estar solo que mal acompañado,¡s aún mejor estar en buena compañía!

I just wonder what the hike would have been like had Roland not missed his opponent with the supposed fatal blow…aunque quiero saber como la ruta habría sido si Rolando no hubiera perdido a su adversario con este supuesto golpe fatal…
