It was time to depart on the Camino del Invierno! Ya había llegado la hora del embarque en el Camino del Invierno!
I hadn’t realised how late the sun rose in the west part of Spain in the autumn, and even though I waited until 7:30 to leave, it was still pretty dark. There was just enough light to walk. I left Ponferrada by crossing a bridge and going up a nearby mountain that provided incredible views of the sun rising over Ponferrada, a city of 63,052 inhabitants. No me di cuenta de la hora bastante tarde del amanecer en el oeste de España en el otoño. Aunque esperé hasta las 7.30 para salir, todavía era bastante oscuro. Solo había la luz suficiente para caminar. Dejé Ponferrada por cruzar un puente y subir un monte cercano que daba vistas increíbles de la alba sobre Ponferrada, una ciudad de 63.052 habitantes.
The first two pueblos had bars open, and the owner of the second one told me a shortcut to save a few metres. Along the way, I pet five dogs, so I was pretty happy. Había bares abiertos en los primeros dos pueblos, y la dueña del segundo me informó de un atajo para ahorrar unos metros. Por el camino, jugué a cinvo perros, y por eso, estaba contento.
I didn’t write a lot in my travel journal about this day, but I do remember it being remote and passing through some beautiful mountain scenery. About halfway through the day, I passed a beautiful ermita, la Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Carmen. Por alguna razón, no escribí mucho en mi diario de viaje. Sin embargo, recuerdo que era bastante aislado y iba por el paisaje bonito del monte. A media distancia, había una ermita chula, la Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Carmen.
Three kilometres later, I arrived to the beautiful Cornatel Castle, another typical castle ruins. I remember worrying I had taken a wrong turn, because the arrows weren’t clear where the actual turn off was, but I arrived without any problem to the castle and I explored. A running theme of this Camino would be “Thank you Mario, but the Princess is in another castle!” Those who get this joke get it and those who don’t don’t. A tres kilómetros después, llegué al precioso Castillo Cornatel, otro castillo en ruinas. Me acuerdo de precouparme de perderme porque las flechas no estaban claras. No obstante, llegué sin problema al castillo, y lo exploré. Durante todo este camino, pensaba “Gracias Mario, ¡pero nuestra Princesa está en otro castillo!” Los que lo pillan lo pillan y los que no, no.
I was hoping to arrive to the hotel in Las Médulas for lunch, and I did, albeit a later lunch around 3 p.m. The last few kilometres began to enter areas affected by wildfires, something I would see even more of as the Camino went on this next week. Estaba esperando llegar al hotel en Las Médulas para la comida, y lo hice, pero un poco más tarde, sobre las 15. Los últimos kilómetros iban por zonas afectuadas por los incendios, algo de que iba a ver más durante este Camino durante toda la semana.
I stayed at the Hotel Medulio on the outskirts of Las Médulas, population 101. Due to the old Roman mines and the beautiful red land formations, it is quite touristy and one of the places I regretted not seeing when I lived in Spain. After resting, I went exploring the land formations, which were worth the wait. Me alojé en el Hotel Medulio en las afueras (si se puede decir…) de las Médulas, poblacion 101. Como hay minas romanas antiguas y formaciones interesantes de la tierra roja, siempre hay muchos turistas. Era uno de los sitios que lamenté no haber visto cuando vivía en España. Después de descansar, fui a explorar esas formaciones. Valían la pena.
The town though left much to be desired. They didn’t have a lot of options for food or housing, and what there was costs a lot due to the tourist interest. El pueblo no ofrecía mucho, ni opciones de comer ni alojamiento. Lo poco que habia cuesta mucho por el interés turístico.
It also began the tradition of bad wi-fi that I would find this entire Camino. También empecé la tradición de wi-fi que no va que iba a encontrar por todo el Camino.
That said, the actual Médulas were beautiful. Pero bueno, las Médulas eran preciosas, eso sí.
That night I crashed, ready to cross into Galicia the next day. Esta noche dormí bien, listo para entrar Galicia el próximo día.
