As luck would have it (pun intended, as that is the English name of a movie that translates as “The Spark of Life”), La chispa de la vida, directed by Basque filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia, happens to be one heck of a social commentary. La chispa de la vida, dirigido por director vasco Álex de la Iglesia, es un comentario social genial.

To understand a bit better the title, I should mention that “La chispa de la vida”, the spark of life, was a Coca Cola slogan in Spain for many years. Para los que ya no lo sabían, “la chispa de la vida” era el eslogan por Coca Cola en España durante muchos años. 

Roberto (José Mota) is an unemployed advertising agent desperate to find work to support his family. After a meeting with an old boss goes bad, he decides to drive to Cartagena, Murcia, to the hotel where he spent his honeymoon with Luisa (Salma Hayek). He gets swept away with a tour for reporters of the restored Roman theatre. He finds himself literally hanging off a statue when a security guard startles him, making this another hanging movie for de la Iglesia. He falls (surprisingly OFF SCREEN) and lands on an iron bar protruding from the theatre floor. Roberto trabajaba en publicidad pero lleva años en para y es desesperado para encontrar trabajo para apoyar a su familia. Después de una mala entrevista con un jefe antiguo, decide conducir a Cartagena, Murcia, para visitar el hotel donde alojé con su mujer, Luisa (Salma Hayek) en su luna de miel. Se pierda en un tour de periodistas del teatro romano de Cartagena y después se encuentra colgando de un estatua después de estar asustado por un guardia de seguridad. Se cae (¡y no lo vemos!) y se encuentra con su cabeza encima de un barra de hierro que se proyecte desde el suelo.

When the reporters visiting the theatre catch wind of this, a media frenzy takes place. Roberto, desperate to make a Euro or hundred thousand off his unfortunate circumstance, tries to auction his story off to the highest bidder. His family, who has arrived in Cartagena from Madrid, are none too happy about how his desire to provide for his family means more to him than living. Doctors work to figure out how save his life as Roberto works to figure out how to get money for his family. Cuando los periodistas vistando se enteran de lo que está pasando, una frenesí de media tiene lugar. Roberto, desesperado de ganar un euro (o un cien mil de euros) de su circumstancia, intenta vender su historia a quien le paga más dinero. Su familia, quien ha llegado a Cartagena desde Madrid, no están contentos de los esfuerzos de Roberto y como su vida no parece importarle nada. Los médicos trabajan para encontrar una manera de salvar la vida mientras Roberto trabaja ganar algo de pasta para cuidar a su familia. 

For regular viewers of the works of Álex de la Iglesia, we see his usually subtle commentary on the voyeuristic society we find ourselves in explode in front of us. Everyone wants to see what will happen to the chap whose life is on the iron spike line. The film is a bit subdued for the director, however. We only see gory blood at the end. Para los fans de siempre de Álex de la Iglesia, vemos sus comentarios de la sociedad voyerística de hoy en día explota en la pantalla. Todos quieren ver que pasará al tío que tiene su vida en la barra de hierro. La película es algo apagada por el director, como solo vemos la sangre de siempre al final de la película.

The acting is great, and while there is less humour than usual for de la Iglesia, the film strikes a chord. In a world that wonders what the Kardashians are up to, how far would we go ourselves for a bit of fame and fortune? Los actores son geniales, y aunque sea algo menos de humor negro del estilo de la Iglesia, podemos relacionar bien con la película. En un mundo que siempre quiere saber lo que está pasando con los Kardashians, ¿qué harémos por un poco de fama y pasta?

Crimen Ferpecto (2004)

What is the perfect crime? In his own bizarre homage to Hitchcock, Basque director Álex de la Iglesia tries to answer this question. It may not be the perfect crime, but it is the ferpect crime. ¿Cuál es el crimen perfecto? En un homenaje bizarro a Hitchcock, el director vasco Álex de la Iglesia intenta contestar la pregunta. Aunque no sea el crimen perfecto, es el crimen ferpecto. 

Rafael (Guillermo Toledo) is a salesman at Yeyo’s, a thinly disguised El Corte Inglés, Spain’s biggest department store chain.  He’s a friend to everyone and in line to get a promotion to be the floor boss. However, when the promotion falls through and goes to his rival, Don Antonio (Luis Varela) Rafael is not too pleased. Rafael (Guillermo Toledo) es un dependiente de Yeyo’s, (El Corté Inglés, el grande almacén famoso de España). Es amigo de todos y a punto de recibir una promoción para ser el jefe de la planta. Sin embargo, cuando dan la promoción a su rival, Don Antonio (Luis Varela), Rafael no está nada contento. 

What is not pleased? He accidentally kills his new boss when the boss fires him for refusing to do menial labour. Oops! He goes to burn the body in the basement firepit, but alas, the body disappears. His coworker, Lourdes (Mónica Cervera) blackmails her way into his life after she helps him dispose of his body. She’s annoying, unattractive to Rafael and a bit crazy (and has a crazy family to boot.) How far will Rafael go to get rid of his new problem? And will he listen to Don Antonio’s ghost’s crazy demands for the “ferpect” crime? ¿Qué quiere decir “nada contento”? Pues, se mata al jefe nuevo (¡Fue accidente! ¡En serio!) cuando el jefe le despide por rechazar hacer trabajo de baja categoría. Va a quemar el cuerpo en el incendiario del sótano, pero de repente, el cuerpo desaparece. Su compañera de trabajo, Lourdes (Mónica Cervera) le chantajea a Rafael después de ayudarle quemar el cuerpo, y de repente son amantes y más. Es pesada, no es atractiva para Rafael, y está algo loca (y también tiene una familia bastante loca). ¿Qué va a hacer Rafael para deshacerse de ella? ¿Va a hacer caso al consejo del fantasma de Don Antonio para hacer el “crimen ferpecto”? 

The film is Álex de la Iglesia’s third hit in a row. For a director that’s hit or miss, I know that miss is out there, waiting to get me. I’m enjoying the hits though. The film is his usual brand of dark comedy, mixed with a voyeurism aspect, of course (Lourdes’ proposes to him on a reality show being filmed at the store) and the lengths people will go to for money and to have the “ferpect” life. (Ferpect is a play on words from the Hitchcock film.) La película es el tercer éxito seguido por Álex de la Iglesia. Para un director que es “hit or miss” (es muy bueno y muy malo) para mi, sé que su próxima mala película está allí, esperándome. Pero voy a disfrutar de las buenas. La película es su comedia negra de siempre, mezclada con un aspecto de voyerismo como siempre (Lourdes le pide casarse con ella a Rafeal en un programa de realidad rodado en la tienda) y que puede hacer alguien para tener un poco de dinero y para tener la vida “ferpecta”. 

The violence in the film is pretty brutal, and there are a few sex scenes, proving once again Álex de la Iglesia is the leader in “symbotic excess.” There are a few fun scenes in the store after closing hours. Who wouldn’t want to have a night using the store’s amenities? Free wine, food, beds…there is also another hanging scene reminiscent of the ones in El día de la bestia and La Comunidad. Álex de la Iglesia must like hanging out in Madrid. (/bad pun). La violencia en la película es bastante fuerte, y hay algunas escenas de sexo, que muestra una vez más que Álex de la Iglesia es el líder de “symbotic excess.” Hay unas escenas divertidas en la tienda que tienen lugar cuando está cerrada. ¿Quién no quería pasar una noche en la tienda con su comida, vino, camas…? Hay otra escena colgante que me recuerdo de las escenas de El día de la bestia y La comunidad. No hay doble sentido en castellano como hay en inglés, ¡perdona!

I debated whether or not to continue highlighting Spanish directors. In the end, although I know they’re not extremely popular entries, it’s a side project that I enjoy and gives me something to focus on in the Bilbao rain. Lo he pensando, si iba a seguir con escribir sobre directores españoles. Al final, aunque sé no son las entradas más populares del blog, es un proyecto que disfruto y me da algo de hacer en la lluvia “sirimiri” de Bilbao que no cesa. 

I toyed with highlighting Luis Buñuel, and I also thought about highlighting one of my favourite actress and the ultimate Chica Almodóvar, Carmen Maura. In the end, those projects are saved for a later time. Pensaba en escribir sobre Luis Buñuel, y también he pensando en escribir sobre Carmen Maura, una de mis actrices preferidas y la mítica Chica Almodóvar. Al final, he aplazado eses proyectos para después.

As my time in Bilbao is most likely drawing to a close, I decided to highlight a director from the Capital of the World, Álex de la Iglesia. Pedro Almodóvar produced his first film, Acción Mutante, in 1993. However, in many ways, de la Iglesia is Almodóvar’s exact opposite. Como creo que la hora de marcharme de Bilbao, decidí escribir sobre un director de la Capital del Mundo, Álex de la Iglesia. Pedro Almodóvar produjo si primera película, Acción Mutante, en 1993. Sin embargo, en muchas maneras, de la Iglesia es el contrario de Almodóvar.

While Almodóvar would be seen as John Waters meets Stanley Kubrick crossed with Fellini, de la Iglesia can be seen as a grotesque Kevin Smith meets a grotesque Michael Bay, but a Bay that has a modicum of talent. Almodóvar is from the bright, shiny word of Metropolis and de la Iglesia is from the dark, gritty world of Gotham (albeit Tim Burton or Joel Schumacher’s version of Gotham, not Christopher Nolan’s.) Mientras Almodóvar sería un John Waters mezclado con Stanley Kubrick mezclado con Fellini, de la Iglesia es un Kevin Smith grosero mezclado con un Michael Bay grosero, pero un Bay que tiene algo de talento. Almodóvar viene del mundo brillante y asoleado de Metropolis, y de la Iglesias es del mundo gris, oscuro y áspero de Gotham (pero quiero decir el Gotham de Tim Burton o Joel Schumacher y no el Gotham de Christopher Nolan.) 

Álex de la Iglesia was born on 4 December 1965 in Bilbao, the capital of the world. He studied philosophy at the Universidad de Deusto in Bilbao, and after university and a brief stint in television, he began working as a production designer for films. Almodóvar took note of a short film de la Iglesia made with his friend José Guerricaechevarria, Mirindas Asesinas, in 1991 and produced de la Iglesia’s first feature-length film, Acción Mutante. Álex de la Iglesia nació el 4 de diciembre 1965 en Bilbao, la capital del mundo. Estudió filosofía en la Universidad de Deusto en Bilbao. Después de la universidad y un trabajo breve en televisón, empezó a trabajar como un diseñador de producción de películas. Un corte de Álex de la Iglesia que hizo con su amigo José Guerricaechevarria, Mirindas Asesinas, llamó la atención de Almodóvar en 1991, y el director famoso produjo el primer cortolargo del bilbaíno, Acción Mutante. 

He tried to make it in Hollywood with Perdita Durango, but he was closely compared with Tarantino and the film didn’t meet much success. He returned to Spain where his films have been successful, sometimes both at the box office and critically, sometimes only one or the other. Después, de la Iglesia intentó en Hollywood con Perdita Durango, pero la película era considera demasiada “posTarantino” y no recibió mucho éxito en la taquilla. Volvió a España donde ha tenido bastante éxito, a veces en ambos la taquilla y con los críticos, a veces con solo uno o el otro. 

He has directed 14 films as of 2016, has received various nominations for the Goya (Spain’s Oscar) and won once for Best Director for El Día de la Bestia in 1995. Hasta 2016, ha dirigido 14 películas y ha recibido varias nominciones de las Goyas. Ganó la Goya por Mejor Director en 1994 por El día de la Bestia. 

While I am not as familiar with his work as I am Almodóvar, I have seen a few Álex de la Iglesia films. I’m no expert, so I won’t do a weekly checklist, but I will try to grow with each entry and look for what makes the Basque director tick. I hope you join me for this journey! Aunque no soy tan familiar con su carrera como soy con la carrera de Almodóar, he visto algunas películas del director vasco. No soy tan experto para hacer un checklist, pero intenteré crecer con cada entrada de blog y mirar lo que hace el director vasco único. Espero que os guste el proyecto de la Iglesia.
