A young woman tries to save her grandfather by looking for an olive tree in the 2016 Spanish film El Olivo, directed by Icíar Bollaín. Una mujer joven intenta salvar a su abuelo con una busqueda de un olivo en la película española de 2016 El olivo, dirigida por Icíar Bollaín. 

Alma (Anna Castillo) is a party girl whose grandfather (Manuel Cucala) was hit by the STILL ONGOING financial crisis in Spain. The grandfather hasn’t spoken in years, ever since the family sold an olive tree, and now he has stopped eating too. Along with her uncle Alcachofa (Javier Gutiérrez), they are on a quest to find the olive tree to give hope to the grandfather. Alma (Anna Castillo) es una chica que le gusta fiesta. Su abuelo (Manuel Cucala) era un victima de la crisis económica que SIGUE TODAVÍA en España. El abuelo no ha hablado durante años, desde el día que la familia vendó un olivo especial. Ahora, tampoco come. Con su tío Alcachofa (Javier Gutiérrez), están buscando el olivo para dar esperanza al abuelo. 

The film is pretty slow, much slower than Bollaín’s other films which are known to be slow. The directing and acting are excellent, but the pace of the film made it seem an eternity. Anna Castillo won the Goya for Best New Actress in 2017, which she definitely deserved. La película es bastante floja, y mucho más lenta que las otras películas de Bollaín que tiene fama de ser lentas. Aunque el actuación y la dirección son excelentes, el ritmo de la película la hace una eternidad. Anna Castillo ganó el Goya por Mejor Actriz Novata en 2017, y lo mereció. 

Paul Laverty, the partner of Bollaín, wrote the script after 10 years of having the idea in his head. Paul Laverty, la pareja de Bollaín, escribió el guion después de 10 años de pensar sobre la idea.

The film had potential, but is probably the “least-good” of Bollaín’s oeuvre. La película tenía potencial, pero creo que es la “menos buena” de las obras de Bollaín.
