The time had arrived to start making our way back east. After having breakfast at the hotel, we hit the road bright and early once again. We took the scenic byway, State Route 128, that went along the Colorado River, up to I-70. It offered incredible views of the river and mountains. Ya llegó la hora para empezar la vuelta al este. First stop was in Grand Junction, Colorado, at Octopus Coffee, which was a quaint little coffee shop near the interstate. We stopped again for coffee at Deja Brew in Glenwood Springs, where we turned off for our next stop, Aspen. As a Mariah Carey fan since 1993, I have been enjoying her annual Christmas visit to Aspen vicariously for years. Being there in the summer did not impress me much, to quote her 1998 co-VH1 Diva’s Live Headliner Shania Twain. Aspen is a ski-resort town of 7,000 residents that was also beloved by John Denver. In fact, after we finally found parking, the John Denver Sanctuary was our first stop. I loved this beautiful park. We later explored the town on foot a while. It was a very expensive place so we did our best to avoid the food temptations so we could save money. We stayed in Eagle, Colorado, population 7511, located right off I-70. While the small town was beautiful, it was also a bit unnerving for a gay couple to be honest. Nowhere near as bad as the entire state of Wyoming though. Nos alojamos en Eagle, Colorado, población 7511, a lado de I-70. Aunque el pueblo era bonito, nos daba vibraciones desconocertantes como somos una pareja gay. Pero bueno, nada como todo el estado de Wyoming, que es mucho peor.

We walked along the river a while, which reminded me of the rivers and mountains in Northern Spain along el Camino del Norte. There wasn’t a whole lot to choose from for dinner, so we just ordered a pizza. It was an early night, and our trip was slowly but surely coming to an end. However, there was still one day left of our adventure. Caminamos por el río un rato, y me recordaba de los ríos y montes en el norte de España cuando hice el Camino del Norte. Había pocas opciones para cenar, y por eso pedimos una pizza. Fuimos a la cama prontito, y el viaje estaba terminando. No obstante, nos quedaba un día más de nuestra aventura.

Destino Utah: Parte IV

The big day had arrived. Canyonlands! Por fin, ¡el gran día ha llegado! ¡Canyonlands/Tierras de Cañón!

After breakfast at the hotel, we went to a drive-thru coffee place, Wicked Brew. My boyfriend liked the skeletons. Después del desayuno al hotel, fuimos a una cafetería de servicio de auto, Wicked Brew. A mi chico le gustaban los esqueletos.

It’s about a 45-minute drive to the Islands in the Sky section of Canyonlands National Park from Moab. We arrived just before 8 and went directly toward Mesa Arch, one of the most popular spots in the park. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the parking lot, and the views were incredible. Tarda sobre 45 mintos para llegar en Islands in the Sky (Islas en el cielo) del Parque Nacional Canyonlands desde Moab. Llegamos justo antes de las 8 y fuimos directamente al Arco Mesa, uno de los sitios más popular del parque. Tarda sobre 15 minutos para andar desde el aparcamiento, y las vistas eran impresionantes.

The next stop was the Grand View Point, and we did the Grand View Point Hike, which is about 3.2 km (2 miles) out and back. Again, more spectacular views. La próxima parada fue Grand View Point (Grande Mirador), y hicemos la ruta de Grand View Point, unos 3.2 kilómetros ida y vuelta, y otra vez, con vistas espectaculares.

I did the Upheaval Dome hike while my boyfriend rested (he’s not a big hiker like I am, unfortunately. If I had more time and was by myself, I probably would have explored the Needles and spent the entire time hiking). It was about 3 km/1.8 miles and featured stunning vistas of a crater. Hice la ruta de Upheaval Dome mientras mi chico descansó (no le gusta hacer senderismo tanto como yo, lamentablemente. Si tuviera más tiempo y estuviera solo, exploraría la sección de Needles y hacer senderismo todo el rato). La ruta tenía unos 3 kilómetros de longitud y había vistas preciosas de un cráter.

We also stopped at the Green River Outlook and Shafer Canyon Outlooks before leaving, as the park was filling up. It’s definitely recommendable (especially if you’re coming from Eastern or Central Time Zones if your internal clock is still in those time zones) to wake up early as you miss the heat and the people. También fuimos al Mirador del Río Verde y Mirador de Cañón Shafer antes de ir porque estaban llegando las masas de gente. Recomiendo (especialmente si vienes de las zonas horarias del Este o Central) despertarse pronto para evitar el calor y la gente.

We stopped in the centre of town and took note of a place to go back to see the sunset if we didn’t feel like heading back to Arches (Ultimately we didn’t but for different reasons). I got a few souvenirs and checked out the Moab Coffee Roasters before we rested a bit. Paramos en el centro de Moab y encontramos un sitio para volver para mirar la puesta de sol si no nos apetecía volver a Arcos (en el fin no lo hicimos pero por razones distintas.) Compré unos regalos y probé la cafetería Moab Coffee Roasters antes de descansar un rato.

When we headed back out, we stopped at Lions Park to walk along the Colorado River before going to pick up dinner at The Spoke on Center. We were going to eat in Lions Park and watch the sunset, but clouds were coming in which ruined our plan. It also ruined the plan to stargaze. Cuando salimos de nuevo, paremos en Parque Leones para caminar por el Río Colorado antes de recoger la cena en The Spoke on Center. Íbamos a cenar en Parque Leones para ver la puesta del sol, pero llegaron los nubes para arruinar nuestro plan, y también el plan para ver las estrellas.

It did, however, give us the chance to rest before the next day’s adventure…Pero por lo menos nos daba una oportunidad para descansar antes de la próxima aventura.

The third day of our Utah trip was one of the busiest travel days ever. El tercer día de nuestro viaje a Utah era uno de los días más completos de viajar de mi vida.

We woke up, had breakfast (Tru by Hilton is not my fave hotel breakfast) and headed to the Great Salt Lake State Park. I was always upset as a kid that I never got to see the lake, and I am glad I got to rectify that situation. Nos despertamos, desayunamos (no me mola mucho el desayuno de Tru by Hilton), y fuimos al Parque Estatal Great Salt Lake. Siempre quería ver el lago como un niño, y por fin podía arreglar la situación.

The lake is beautiful, and we pretty much had the place to ourselves, outside a Dutch quartet who were on the other end of the park from us. We walked around a bit before heading toward downtown Salt Lake City to explore. El lago es bonito, y no había casi nadie, salvo un grupo de cuatro de holandeses quien estaban en el otro lado del parque de nostros. Exploramos a pie un poco antes de ir al centro de Salt Lake City para explorarlo.

We parked near Temple Square, the headquarters of the Mormon Church, and found an interesting park nearby. We saw the Beehive House from the outside, but there was a lot of construction going on. We explored the area on foot, stopped for coffee at The Daily and decided to head on to Donut Falls. Aparcamos cerca de Plaza de Templo, la sede de la Iglesia Mormón, y encontramos un parque interesante muy cerquita. Vimos la Casa de Colmena desde afuera, pero había muchas obras por todos los lados. My boyfriend was tired, so he stayed in the car as I hiked the 5.3 kilometre out-and-back trail to Donut Falls. The hike was beautiful and reminded me of the mountains in the Basque Country. There were some people, but it wasn’t too crowded. It was muddy though, but there was snow to walk on. Mi chico ya estaba cansado, entonces, se quedó en el coche mientras hice la ruta de ida y vuelta de 5.3 kilómetros a Donut Falls. La ruta era preciosa y me recordaba de la sierra de Euskadi. Había algunas personas, pero no estaba masificada. Había mucho barro, pero todavía quedaba nieve para caminar encima.

After getting back to the car, we stopped in Provo at Rugged Grounds for another coffee. We were heading south, along US 191, to Moab. I had debated making a detour to Nephi, since I am a huge fan of The Killers, but I decided it would put us too far out of the way. Después de llegar al coche, paramos en Provo en Rugged Grounds para otro café. Estábamos yendo al sur, por la carretera US 191, a Moab. Pensaba en hacer un desavío a Nephi, como soy un gran fan de The Killers, pero decidí que nos pilló lejos.

We stopped a few times to take pictures of the stunning scenery. We also wanted to try a soda shop, so we went through the drive thru of one in Price. When we got to the hotel in Moab around 5, the hotel clerk informed me that while it wasn’t possible to get a combined pass to both Arches and Canyonlands, that after 5 they didn’t have anyone at the entrance gates charging. So we went to Arches to see Delicate Arch. We did the shorter, less than a kilometre, hikes to Mesa Arch and drove through the park. In the summer, Arches now has a reservation system between the hours of 8 and 5 due to the popularity, and there are still long lines until around 5 to get into the park. Cuando llegamos al hotel en Moab sobre las 5, la dependiente del hotel me informó que aunque no era posible comprar un permiso que incluye ambos Arcos y Canyonlands, que a partir de las 5 no había nada en las puertas de entrada. Entonces, fuimos a Arcos para ver el Arco Delicado. Hicimos la ruta corta, menos de un kilómetro, a Arco Mesa y explorarmos el parque por coche. Moab, population 5366, is a tourist trap and is artificially expensive and lacked cheap food options, so we just went to Wendy’s for dinner, and the drive thru was extremely busy. Even in May, Moab was already overcrowded, thanks to the proximity to two National Parks with spectacular scenery. Moab, población 5366, atrae muchas turistas y es más caro que lo que debería ser con pocas opciones para cenar, entonces, cenemos Wendy’s (un restaurante de comida rápida). Había una cola grande para el McAuto. Ya había demasiada gente y solo era mayo, por los dos parques nacionales con paisajes espectaculares.

The following morning, we would see the other park, Canyonlands. La mañana siguiente, fuimos al otro parque, Canyonlands (Tierras de Cañón.)

Sunday morning, we took advantage of our bodies being on Central Time but physically being in Mountain Time and woke up at 6, had breakfast and left the hotel by 7 to start our journey to Salt Lake City. Domingo por la mañana, aprovechamos de estar acustombrados a la zona horaria central pero estar en la zona horaria montaña y nos despertamos a las 6, desayunamos y salimos del hotel a las 7 para empezar el viaje a Salt Lake City

Our first stop was Tree in the Rock outside of Cheyenne. Close by is the Ames Monument, a pyramid built by the Union Pacific Railroad. We saw a lot of some type of marmot, between a squirrel, prairie dog and groundhog I never found out what was. We stopped to see the Lincoln Highway Monument at the rest area before hitting Laramie for coffee and remembering Matthew Shepherd. The Coal Creek Coffee barista gave me student discount and commented that my now former Ph.D institution had accepted her for grad school but Wyoming gave her more money. La primera parada fue el Árbol en la Roca cerca de Cheyenne. Cerca del Árbol en la Roca es el Monumento Ames, un piramide construido por el Union Pacific Railroad. Había un tipo de marmot, entre una adrilla, perro de pradero y marmota que nunca me enteré de que era. Paramos para ver el Monumento de la Autovía Lincoln en la área de descanso antes de ir a Laramie para café y recordar a Matthew Shepherd, un adolescente asesinado por ser gay en los años 1990. La camarera de Coal Creek Coffee me dio un descuento estudantil y me comentó que la Uni de Nebraska le había aceptado pero la Uni de Wyoming le dio más dinero. Normal.

I thought the scenery would be more spectacular, because it is Wyoming. It was pretty, but not breathtaking. I-80 is not as mountainous as I-70 in Colorado. It was long and tedious. Pensaba que el paisaje iba a ser más espectacular, porque es Wyoming. Estaba bonito pero nada especial. La autovía I-80 no es tan montañosa como I-70 en Colorado.

We were going to stop in Rock Springs, but the town unnerved us so we went on to Green River and stopped at Get Real Coffee before continuing on. Íbamos a parar en Rock Springs, pero el pueblo nos puso nervioso, y por eso, fuimos a Green River y paramos en el Get Real café antes de continuar.

It was a relief to reach the Utah state line. It’s just as red as Wyoming, but their Wikitravel page doesn’t warn LGBTQ+ travelers to avoid the state due to hate crimes. Nos relajamos cuando llegamos a la frontera de Utah. Sí, es tan conservador (quizás aún más por los mormones), pero su página de Wikitravel no avisa los viajeros LGBTQ+ que no deben venir a su estado por todos los crimenes de odio…

We drove around Park City before finding parking and exploring the Main Street on foot. It was okay, but nothing special. Maybe if I had been there for Sundance? Fuimos a Park City y buscamos parking (nos costaba bastante). Exploramos la Gran Vía (Main Street) a pie. No estaba mal pero nada del otro mundo. ¿Quizás durante Sundance?

We arrived to our hotel in Salt Lake City and rested a bit before going out for dinner. We wanted to try the local fast food place Arctic Circle to try their famous fry sauce, which was good. We then went to Ensign Peak to see the sunset over the Utah’s capital city and the Great Salt Lake. Llegamos al hotel en Salt Lake City y descansamos un rato antes de salir para cenar. Queríamos probar un restaurante de comida rápida local Arctic Circle para probar la salsa de patatas, y estaba buena. Luego fuimos a Ensign Park para ver el atardecer sobre la capital de Utah y el Lago Great Salt (¿Lago Salado Grande?)

I had missed the mountains and the great outdoors. I was about to see even more soon. Echaba de menos los montes y la gran naturaleza. Estaba a punto de ver aún más.
