The day of leaving behind Aragón and entering Navarra had arrived. I would also be hitting civilization again after several days of isolated and remote Camino walking. Ya había llegado el día de dejar atrás la comunidad de Aragón y entrar Navarra. También iba a encontrar algo de civilización después de algunos días de caminar por la España más profunda y vacía.

I really wanted to walk alone, so I got up early, around 6:15, and Ruesta was pitch black. I went to the main building to pick up my breakfast, and in trying to go back to my room to eat, promptly tripped and spilled most of it. Como quería estar solo para el Camino, me desperté pronto, sobre las 6.15, y el pueblo abandonado de Ruesta estaba en oscuridad completa. Fui al edificio principal del alberge para recoger mi desayuno, y, cuando volvía a la habitación para desayunar, me tropecé y se me cayó casí todo el desayuno.  

Luckily it was the last of the bad luck from the previous day. Fortunamente, era la última de la mala suerte del día anterior.

The Camino went downhill, literally, and through some mountain forest that offered stunning views of la España vacía/vaciada. I felt alone in the world, the type of hiking I like most. I did pass a few of the peregrinos from the day before as I went back up the mountains. El Camino bajaba y pasaba por el bosque y el monte que disponía de vistas espectaculares de la España vacía/vaciada. Me sentí solo en el mundo, el tipo de senderismo que más me gusta. Pasé a algunos de los peregrinos del día anterior durante la subida a los montes.

Surprise, surprise. About two hours into the day’s walk, I arrived to Undües de Lerda, population 52, and the bar was not only open but had tostada con tomate! The Argentine peregrina arrived while I was eating, and she told me she was thinking about staying the night in Undües, where there is an albergue because she felt overwhelmed by all of the pilgrims, like I was sort of feeling. Sorpresa, sorpresa. Después de caminar unas dos horas, llegúe a Undües de Lerda, población 52, y el bar estaba abierto…¡y además, ofrecía tostada con tomate! La peregrina argentina llegó mientras estaba comiendo, y me contó que estaba pensando en quedar la noche en Undües, donde había un albergue, porque todos los peregrinos estaban agobiándose, como yo.

We probably should never go on the Camino Francés if this group of a dozen or so felt huge…Nunca debemos hacer el Camino Francés si este grupo de unos 12 peregrinos nos agobian…

I went on my way before anyone else caught up to us. She eventually decided to stay there, and then I heard from others that she did a 50-kilometre day the next day to be able to do her own stages. Good for her! Salí antes de llegar otros peregrinos. Eventualmente, ella decidió quedarse allí, y me comentaron que el próximo día hizo 50 kilómetros para poder hacer sus propias etapas. ¡Que bien!

I crossed into Navarra, and it already had a Basque feeling in the air. The Camino passed remote farms. While walking, I received an email saying that my first nights on the Camino Vasco del Interior had been cancelled due to a plumbing crisis, so I decided to cancel that and go straight to the Camino del Invierno. Crucé a Navarra, y ya noté un sentimiento de estar en Euskal Herria. El Camino pasaba por algunas granjas y fincas aisladas. Mientras estaba caminando, recibí un email que me dijo que tenían que anular mi primera noche en el Camino vasco del interior dado unas problemas con los baños, y luego decidí cambiar de plan y anular este camino y empezar el Camino del Invierno unos días antes.

I arrived to Sangüesa, population 4882, around 12:20 and went into town for another coffee before checking into the Pensión Peregrino on the edge of town. It was a nice pension and cheaper (25€ Fall 2022), and the owner was quite welcoming. I did some laundry before going into town where I found a menu del día for 15€. Lasagna, pollo al horno and crema catalana. Llegué a Sangüesa, población 4882, sobre las 12.20, y fui al centro para tomar otro café antes de hacer check-in a la Pensión Peregrino en las afueras del pueblo. Es una pensión bonita y más barata (25€ en el otoño de 2022). La hospitalera era muy acogedora. Lavé la ropa antes de volver al centro del pueblo donde encontré un menú del día por 15€–lasaña, pollo al horno y crema catalana.

I got money out of the ATM and some drinks and food for the next day, and I arrived back at the pensión right before the thunderstorm did. It was a brief one at least. Saqué dinero del cajero automático y compré algo de comida y bebida para el próximo día, y llegué a la pensión justo antes de la tormenta. Por lo menos era una tormenta breve.

It seems I was settling into one good day, one rougher day. I only had two days left on the Aragonés though…me sentía como si tuviera un buen día y un mal día por el Camino. Pero solo me quedaban dos días más del Camino Aragonés…
