Not every day on the Camino is a great day. In fact, days like my fifth day on the Camino are downright meh for many reasons. No todos los días en el Camino de Santiago son días buenos. De hecho, días como mi quinto día del Camino Aragonés pueden ser bastante regulares por muchas razones.

I woke up at 6:16 after a horrible night’s sleep, made coffee and left the hostal by 7:00. It was still really dark, and walking down the hill outside of Arrés, my water bottle fell out of my pack. It was a sign for how the day would go. Me desperté a las 6:16 después de dormir mal, hice el café, y salí del hospedería antes de las 7:00. Todavía estaba muy oscuro, y durante el decenso, mi botella de agua se me cayó desde la mochila. Fue un presagio para el día.

The Camino went through lots of isolated farmland, passing two villages in the distance that had no services (Martes and Miano). The views were beautiful, though, and I was still in rather good spirits. Unfortunately, the banana from the picnic the hostal had left out for me was rotten. Minor bad luck. El Camino pasó por muchas fincas aisladas. Había dos pueblos en la distancia sin servicios (Martes y Miano). Sin embargo, las vistas eran preciosas, y por eso, aún estaba en buen humor. Lamentablemente, el plátano del picnic que me habían preparado estaba pudrido. Un poco de mala suerte.

According to the guides and users at Gronze, the hamlet of Artieda, population 82, had a bar. It was 1 km off the Camino. Imagine my disappointment to find the bar closed. Según los gúias y los usadores de Gronze, el aldea de Artieda, población 82, disponía de un bar. El pueblo estaba a un kilómetro del camino. Llegué para encontrar el bar cerrado. Que decepción.

I also missed an arrow. I thought it was weird that the Camino was going through a field, and I couldn’t find any new arrows, so I turned around and went back to find a tiny, hard to see arrow pointing toward the left. I didn’t have many steps to retrace, but it was still annoying. También, perdí una flecha amarilla. Pensaba que estaba raro que el Camino iba por un campo, y no pude encontrar ninguna otra flecha. Tenía que retrodecer y eventualmente encontré una flecha pequeñita escondida señalizando que tenía que girar a la izquierda. No era para tanto, pero cuando uno ya está cansado y frustrado, es más pesado.

The last part of the Camino was at least 3 kilometres of walking along an abandoned road with scenery reminiscent of the Badlands. Eventually it went through a forest that was filled with bugs. I skipped stopping at an ermita because I was tired and cranky.El último tramo del Camino este día incluyó unos 3 kilómetros de caminar por una carretera abandonada con paisaje parecido a el de las Malas Tierras (Badlands) en el Dakota del Sur. Al final pasó por un bosque con muchos bichos por todos los lados.

Ruesta is an abandoned ghost town with a castle in ruins and an albergue. I paid extra to have a room for myself, although the bathroom was shared (I think with no one at that time of year though). They had a menú del día for 12€, which was delicious, and after eating and resting a bit, I felt better and explored the abandoned village. Ruesta es un pueblo abandonado con un castillo en ruinas y un albergue. Pagué más para tener una habitación individual, aunque el baño era compartido. (Creo que no había otra persona allí en aquel epoca del año.) Disponía de un menú del día por 12€. Estaba rico. Después de comer y descansar un rato, me sentí humano otra vez y exploré el pueblo abandonado.

At dinner, I talked with an Argentine peregrina living in Barcelona who was like me and wanted to do the Camino alone. I also served as translator, and it was a great night. Even though the day felt kinda meh, it ended well. Durante la cena, hablé con una peregrina argetina quien estaba viviendo en Barcelona. Como yo, quería hacer el Camino solo, sin ver tanta gente por todos los lados. También hice de traductor, y fue una buena noche. Aunque el día era regular, terminó bien.
