In about 2 and a half weeks, I’ll be on a plane to Spain for the first time since 2018, and then in just a little over three weeks, I’ll be setting off on the Camino. I’ll actually be doing three Caminos this year. Dentro de unos dos semanas y pico, estaré en un avión a España por la primera vez desde 2018, y luego, dentro de un poco más de tres semanas, estaré empezando el Camino. De hecho, voy a hacer tres Caminos este año.

These plans are tentative, but I have reserved ahead because I am staying in pensiones and hostales along isolated Caminos, not albergues, because I am still trying to avoid Covid because I’m worried about long Covid. From what I’ve seen of other peregrinos, I probably wouldn’t have to worry, but I am an introvert as it is. Although I regularly walk 9 km a day, and I have done a couple of practice hikes with my new backpack from REI, I am going to listen to my body and may end up resorting to public transport–although I hope I don’t have to. Mis planes son tentativos, pero aun así, ya he reservado mucho más que quería porque me voy a alojar en las pensiones y los hostales y no albergues porque quiero evitar contagiarme con Covid porque me preocupo el “long Covid”. También voy a hacer caminos aislados. De lo que he visto de otros peregrinos, no debería preocuparme mucho, pero también soy introvertido. Aunque camino unos 9 kilómetros todos los días, y ya he hecho algunas rutas de práctica con mi mochila nueva de REI, voy a hacer caso al cuerpo e igual tener que utilizar el transporte público–aunque espero no tener que hacerlo, desde luego.

As I have my Compostela from 2018, I will not be applying for one this year, so even though I am ending up in Santiago, I won’t be going anywhere near the Oficina de Peregrinos, Camino purists. Also, walk your own Camino and don’t judge anyone on their own Camino. I’m ending up in Santiago for transportation reasons. Cómo ya tengo mi Compostela de 2018, no voy a solicitar una este año. Aunque termine en Santiago, no voy a acercar la Oficina de Peregrinos, para los puristas del Camino. Además, camina tu propio camino y no juzgues a los demás por su camino. Solo acabo en Santiago por temas de transporte.

My flight is Sept 12. After arriving in Barcelona on the 13th, I’ll be headed to Girona for a few days to re-acclimate to the Iberian Peninsula after four years away from the only country that feels like home. On Saturday, the 17th, after meeting up with a friend who will be watching over my suitcase, I’ll be taking the AVE to Zaragoza, then up to Jaca on Sunday. After checking into my AirBNB, where I stayed in 2017, I’ll be catching the noon bus to Somport to get the first sixteen kilometres of the Camino Aragonés out of the way. Mi vuelo es el 12 de septiembre. Después de llegar a Barcelona el día 13, voy a Girona por unos días para reaclamarme a la península ibérica después de 4 años fuera del único país donde me siento en casa. El sábado 17, después de reunirme con una amiga quien me va a guardar mi maleta, voy a coger el AVE a Zaragoza, y luego coger un autobús a Jaca el domingo. Después de hacer check-in en el AirBNB, el mismo donde me alojé en 2017, voy a coger el autobús a las 12 a Somport para hacer los primeros 16 kilómetros del Camino Aragonés.

I have booked two nights in Jaca and one night in Santa Cruz de la Serós so I can take the detour to San Juan de la Peña. Then I’ll be spending the night in Arres, Ruesta, Sangüesa, Monreal, and Puente de la Reina, where the Camino Aragonés meets up with the Camino Francés. Me quedo en Jaca dos noches y una noche en Sta Cruz de la Serós para poder aprovechar y hacer el desavío a San Juan de la Peña. Luego, hago noche en Arres, Ruesta, Sangüesa, Monreal, y Puente de la Reina, donde el Camino Aragonés une con el Camino Francés.

I have a couple of days rest where I go from Puente de la Reina to Irún. I am hoping for an afternoon in Donostia and maybe a day trip to France before starting the Camino Vasco del Interior. I will only be doing for sure the first five etapas, and maybe the sixth from Salvatierra/Aguarian to Vitoria-Gasteiz. However, I have to be in Vitoria Sunday by 2 in the afternoon for my train to Ponferrada. Tengo unos días de descanso cuando me traslado de Puente de la Reina a Irún. Espero pasar una tarde en Donostia y quizás una escapada a Francia antes de empezar el Camino vasco del Interior. Solo voy a hacer las primeras cinco etapas, y quizás la sexta de Salvatierra/Aguarian a Vitoria-Gasteiz. Pero, como tengo que estar en Vitoria domingo antes de las 14 para coger el tren a Ponferrada, no estoy seguro si me da tiempo.

The next day will be my beginning to the Camino del Invierno. I only will be on it for about five days–to Monforte de Lemos or maybe Chantada, since I have to be in Barcelona on October 11th for the second part of my trip. I’ll be renting a car from Santiago and driving to Barcelona for my Spanish road trip. El príxomo día será mi inicio del Camino del Invierno. Solo voy a hacer cinco días, hasta Monforte de Lemos o quizás Chantada, como tengo que estar en Barcelona el 11 de octubre para la segunda parte de mi viaje. Voy a alquiler on cochce y conducir a BCN para hacer un road trip por el norte de España.

Originally I was planning on going to Croatia and Munich, but I cancelled the Munich part and postponed the Croatia leg of my journey a few days so I can fit in the Camino del Invierno. I was very indecisive about either the Camino Vasco or the Camino del Invierno, so in the end I’m fitting parts of both of them in. Al principio, tenía planes de ir a Croacia y luego Múnich, pero anulé la parte del viaje a Múnich y aplacé la parte a Croacia unos días para poder hacer el Camino del Invierno. No pude elegir entre el Camino vasco y el Camino del Invierno y por esto voy a hacer partes de ambos.

After Croatia, I’ll be finishing up my trip in my old home of Valencia, probably doing some hiking if it all works out. Después de Croacia, voy a terminar el viaje en mi hogar antiguo de València, y espero poder hacer un poco de senderismo mientras estoy allí.

For now…these are the plans, always subject to change. Por ahora, son mis planes, pero siempre tengo la opción de cambiarlos.
