Thanksgiving break had arrived, and while I wouldn’t be celebrating the day as I had final papers to work on, I did want to get out of town for a bit. I had heard a lot of good things about Lawrence, Kansas, population 94,934, and is located about three hours southish of Lincoln, not far from Kansas City. Las vacaciones del Día de Acción de Gracias han llegado, y aunque no iba a celebrarlo porque tenía que trabajar en los trabajos finales, quería escapar un rato. Me habían hablado bien sobre Lawrence, Kansas, población 94.934, ubicado a unas tres horas de Lincoln, no muy lejos de la Ciudad de Kansas.

After teaching that Tuesday morning, I left directly from campus and drove along the backroads of Nebraska. I stopped at the Nebraska City Scooters, a Nebraska-area coffee shop chain, before turning south. Prairie has a certain beauty to it, although it’s not the same type as mountains or sea. Después de enseñar el martes por la mañana, fui directamente desde la universidad y conduje por las carreteras secundarias de Nebraska. Paré en el Scooters de Nebraska City. I arrived to the hotel, checked in and walked around the Kansas University campus. It has a lot of hills which I enjoyed. I ate a gyros (kebabs) place for dinner and walked along Main Street for a bit. Llegué al hotel, hice check-in, y caminé por el campus de Kansas Universidad. Hay muchas colinas que me gustaban. Cené en un restaurante de kebabs y paseé por la Gran Vía (Main Street) un rato.

The hotel had nothing out for breakfast the following morning, so I got a pastry at the coffee shop La Prima Tazza and took a stroll through downtown. Había pocas opciones para desayunar en el hotel la próxima mañana, entonces, me compré un pastel en la cafetería La Prima Tazza y paseé por el centro.

Next stop was the Kansas River trails, which I hiked a bit of before turning around and heading back. Luego, fui a las sendas del Río Kansas, y caminé un rato antes de volver.

I found out about a nice, private but open for public use, outdoor area called Iliff Commons near Topeka, which I stopped at. They are known for having two friendly dogs, and I got to meet one of them. It’s a very beautiful prairie zone. Me enteré de una zona de naturaleza privada pero abierta para el uso público que se llama Iliff Commons, cerca de Topeka. Claro que fuí. Es conoocida por tener dos perros amistosos, y pude conocer a uno.

It was an uneventful drive back. Sometimes just getting out of town for a day or so resets one’s mind and energy. Volví sin incidencia. A veces, ayuda mucho escapar por un día para tener un reset de la mente y la energía.
