It was proving to be a difficult semester, so I was excited that I had two weekdays off for a short fall break. I decided to take off to Sioux Falls, the largest city of South Dakota with a population of 192, 517 and growing.
I woke up extremely early on Sunday morning and began driving in the direction of Omaha. My first stop would be the Loess Hills of Iowa for some autumn foliage hiking. I got excited to get off I-29 and take the back roads, which, being Iowa, included some dirt roads. I arrived around 9 a.m., parked and began my hike through the Loess Hills.
My hike took me around the Preparation Canyon park. The views were beautiful, and there were not a lot of people, so it was my type of hike. It took about an hour and a half, and then I had more back roads to drive through to get back to I-29.
I stopped to get coffee in Sioux City, Iowa, population 85, 797, before continuing on to South Dakota. After crossing the state line, the speed limit went up to 80 miles an hour (128 km). Exciting.
Before heading to the hotel, I went to Devil’s Gulch, where Jesse James once evaded capture by jumping on horseback. I walked around another beautiful place before checking into the hotel. After check in, I went to the famous falls of Sioux Falls at sunset. I fell in love with the falls.
The next morning, after breakfast and checking out early, I went back to the falls and walked along them to downtown, watching the city wake up around me. It reminded me of walking along a European river for some reason. I stopped at a coffee shop, La Luna Café near the river and then decided to take the back way back to Lincoln.
It was a weekend full of hiking and a fantastic escape from the realities of grad school.

Sounds like a great trip. I like the detail about Jesse James, on a horse and away.

I was looking for a cool place for hiking and came across that story, so I had to go. I can’t imagine how he did it..it must have been a sight to see, even more back then before movies and special effects. Thanks for reading 🙂
