I’ll have another entry about my 2021 goals, but they will all be with the expectation I get the vaccination by May. Ya escribiré otra entrada sobre los retos y metas para 2021, con la expectativa que tendré la vacuna en mayo.

1. What did you do in 2020 that you’d never done before?: Quarantine for nine months.

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?: LOL. 

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?: I don’t think so. 

4. Did anyone close to you die?: My uncle died from cancer in February.

5. What countries did you visit?: Only US 😥

6. What would you like to have in 2021 that you lacked in 2020?: A golden retriever, a functioning government and people who take a pandemic seriously. 

7. What date from 2020 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?: March 11, the day it all went to hell. May 16, the day I graduated.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?: I graduated with a MA from the University of Illinois. 

9. What was your biggest failure?: Ph.D rejections

10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Depression and anxiety.

11. What was the best thing you bought?: Coffee was the only thing I bought. Unemployed and saving money. Oh, Hulu and Flixolé. I’m over Netflix. 

12. Whose behavior merited celebration? People who voted against Trump and people who wore a mask and stayed home, plus every teacher and first responder/nurse/medical doctor etc. 

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?: Anyone who DID NOT TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY. Racists. Also: Donald Trump and his supporters. (keeping from 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019. Scary!)  At this point, if you support him, you support bigotry and everything the US stands for. If you’re a conversative who is also appalled, though, I still respect you even if I disagree with you. I do not respect Trump and his minions. Keeping from 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019. I will keep Pablo Casado, Albert Rivera, Mariano Rajoy, and all of VOX and their supporters.

14. Where did most of your money go?: Coffee, streaming.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?: Trips that I had to cancel because Covid, and new albums from several of my fave artists. 

16. What song will always remind you of 2020?: 911 by Gaga, Gaslighter by The Chicks, Smiling by Alanis, Mariah’s MC30 collection. 

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Sadder
ii. thinner or fatter? 20 lbs thinner! 
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer. 

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?: Writing, travelling.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of? Quarantining. 

20. How will you be spending Christmas?: I spent it with my mom.

21. How will you be spending New Years? Eating grapes at 5 PM Central Standard Time, which is midnight in most of the Iberian peninsula.

22. Did you fall in love in 2020?: I stayed in love. 

24. What was your favorite TV program?: Cobra Kai, La casa de las flores, Parks and Rec (I saw it for the first time), The Undoing, Lovecraft Country

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?: Reply hazy.

26. What was the best book you read?: Good question! I read so many that they’re all a haze right now.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?: Fly by Midnight.

28. What did you want and get?: Coffee.

29. What did you want and not get?: A golden retriever.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?: I’m Thinking of Ending Things, Eurovision, Diciesiete. 

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?: 39, got take out, saw Christmas lights. 

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?:  The impeachment of Mike Pence and Mitch McConnell for President Pelosi to happen, plus you know, all the hard work I put into grad school having a payoff (keeping from 2019), if people took Coviid seriously. 

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2020: Instead of my usual preppy casual, sweats. Thanks, quarantine. 

34. What kept you sane?: My boyfriend, Hulu, books, puppies on Instagram. 

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?: David Villa. I didn’t really fancy any famous person. 

36. What political issue stirred you the most?: Anyone who has been offended by Donald Trump, please raise your hand. I see everyone raising their hands. Enough said. (Kept from 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.)

37. Who did you miss?: Fallon Fey, my golden retriever, and Spain (kept from 2019)

38. Who was the best new person you met?: I met someone new?

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2020: Academia is not a meritocracy (kept from 2019). Don’t beat yourself up for streaming and reading too many books when you’re unemployed during a quarantine. 

40. Días de Navidad.

In 2019, Netflix España released Días de Navidad, a three-part miniseries about a family during three different Christmas meals: adolescence, 20-somethings and middle aged. En 2019, Netflix España estrenó Días de Navidad, una miniserie con tres partes sobre una familia durante tres comidas navideñas distintas: durante la adolescencia, cuando eran veinteañeras, y durante la edad media. 

(I’m writing this a week or so after finishing it so now all the details are fuzzy. I apologise!) (Escribo esto unos dáis después de acabarla y ahora no recuerdo bien todas las detalles. ¡Pido perdón!)

Those accustomed to the Hallmark Christmas movies will be disappointed, as Christmas is merely a backdrop for the story (and I question why the meal was served during the day instead of the typical Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) dinner, but that’s besides the point). La película decepcionará a los que están acostumbrados a las películas navideñas de Hallmark, porque la Navidad solo es al fondo de la historia (y pregunto porque sirven la comida durante el día en lugar de la cena de Noche Buena típica, pero bueno…)

In the first episode, the family protects a stranger from the Guardía Civil police during the early years of Franco. The stranger becomes a part of the family as we see during the other two episodes. En el primer capítulo, la familia protege a una desconida de la Guardía Civil durante el principio de la dictadura de Franco. 

The third episode is a treat for Spanish cinema junkies because it features Victoria Abril, Ángela Molina, Verónica Forqué and Charo López. El tercer capítulo es muy especial para los frikis de cine español porque salen Victoria Abril, Ángela Molina, Verónica Forqué y Charo López. 

The miniseries is well worth a view and is available on Netflix. Vale la pena verla y está disponible en Netflix. 

Puerto Rico (2005)

In 2005, my mom and I wanted to go somewhere, but we weren’t sure where. We kept going back and forth between Puerto Rico and the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. In the end we decided on Puerto Rico in case it ever should become a state, plus my golden retriever had recently chewed up my passport so it would be best to stay in the US. En 2005, mi madre y yo queríamos ir a algún sitio pero no sabíamos a dónde. Estábamos entre Puerto Rico y el Yucatán en México. Al final elegimos Puerto Rico por si en caso algún día es un estado. Además, mi golden retriever había comido mi pasaporte, y sería mejor quedar en los EEUU. 

We only had four days, and our plans were cut short due to travel issues. Solo tuvimos cuatro días, y teníamos menos tiempo dado algunos problemas durante el viaje. 

The first flight, from Louisville to Orlando, was cancelled because the plane was having engine issues. There were so many people upset, and I was thinking I’d rather not travel than to travel on a plane with a faulty engine. This type of respect for the people working got us a new flight quickly. Cancelaron el primer vuelo, desde Louisville a Orlando dado a los problemas técnicas con el motor. Había tanta gente enfadada, y yo estaba pensando que prefiero no viajar que viajar en un avión con un motor que no funciona. Como respetamos a las personas que trabajaban en el aeropuerto, nos encontaron otro vuelo aún más rápido.

However, the next flight arrived to Orlando during a thunderstorm and had to circle the city many times before running out of gas and having to make an emergency stop in Daytona. Sin embargo, el próximo vuelo llegó a Orlando durante una tormenta y tenía que hacer circulos por la ciudad antes de quedarse sin combustible. Tenía que hacer una parada de emergencia en Daytona. 

We eventually arrived in Orlando and had to rush through the airport again, even having to go through security, and of course, we were pulled aside for further security procedures. Lucky for us, there was another delay, and for all our troubles, we got an upgrade to first class, the only time I’ve actually flown first class. It really is much nicer. Al final llegamos en Orlando y tuvimos que correr por el aeropuerto de nuevo, incluso volver a pasar por la seguirdad. Con la suerte que tuvimos este día, tuvimos que pasar por controles adicionales. Por suerte había otro retraso, y por todos nuestros problemas, nos daban billetes (vale, boletos para los latinos 🙂 ) para primera clase. Fue la única vez que he volado en primera clase. De verdad es muchísimo mejor. 

When we arrived in San Juan, I immediately felt the humidity in the air, despite it being ten at night. Cuando llegamos a San Juan, inmediatamente sentí la humedad en el aire, aunque eran las 10 de la noche. 

On Tuesday, we explored San Juan, especially el Casco Viejo and the fort. I loved being able to practice Spanish again, even if it wasn’t Spain. I flirted with the waiter and my mom had no idea. El martes, exploramos San Juan, especialmente el Casco Viejo y la fortaleza. Me encantó poder practicar el castellano otra vez, aunque no estaba en España. Coqueteé con un camarero (¿mesero en PR?) y mi madre no sabía.

That evening, we went to the bioluminescent lagoon, Laguna Grande, in Fajardo. We had to kayak to it, and it was a unique experience to run my hand through the water and have it glow due to the plankton. Por la tarde, fuimos a la laguna bioluminescente, Laguna Grande, en Fajardo. Fuimos en los kayaks, y fue una experiencia especial para poner la mano en el agua y verla brillar por todo el plancton. 

On Wednesday, we went to El Yunque rainforest and took a tour. El miércoles, fuimos a El Yunque y hicimos un tour de la selva. 

On Thursday, we took a taxi to visit Ponce on the other side of the island. We saw a lot of poverty along the way, but nothing any worse than some parts of Mississippi and Alabama. El jueves, cogimos un taxi para visitar Ponce por la costa sur de la isla. Vimos mucha pobreza por el camino, pero no había nada peor que algunas partes de Mississippi y Alabama. 

The hotel we stayed at had a casino, and I won $10 off the slot machines. The second I won, I stopped playing so I could leave ahead. Había un casino en el hotel, y gané $10 de los tragaperras. Después de ganar, dejé de jugar para que pudiera salir ganando. 

It was a great trip, and, of course, Puerto Rico is a place I would like to explore more. As we went in the month of August, we had hurricanes in the back of our mind, but we were lucky. Fue un viaje genial, y desde luego, Puerto Rico es un sitio que me gustaría explorar más. Como fuimos en el mes de agosto, estábamos un poco preocupados por los húracanes, pero al final, tuvimos suerte. 

Puerto Rico has a ton to see, and four days, especially when we arrived hours later than planned, costing us an afternoon, isn’t enough. Maybe post-Covid I’ll be able to return. Hay mucho que ver en Puerto Rico, y cuatro días, especialmente cuando llegamos horas después de habíamos pensado que nos costó una tarde, no es suficiente para nada. Quizás pos-Covid podría volver. 

La prima Angélica (1974)

In 1974, the year before Franco died, Aragonés director Carlos Saura directed a controversial film, La prima Angélica. En 1947, el año antes de la muerte de Franco, el director aragonés hizo una película con bastante polémica. 

The film’s plot is simple enough on the surface. Luis (José Luis López Vázquez) returns to his childhood home of Segovia in order to transfer the remains of his deceased mother. While there, he is confronted with his past. He reconnects with his now-married first cousin, Angélica, on whom he has always felt an attraction to. Al superficie, el argumento es simple. Luis (José Luis López Vázquez vuelve a su pueblo natal de Segovia para hacer una transferencia de los restos de su madre fallecida. Durante el viaje, el pasado vuelve a confrontarle. Vi a su (ahora casada) prima Angélica, a quién siempre ha tenido una atracción. 

However, his memories feature himself as an adult, while Angélica remains a child, which creates a creepy vibe. That, combined with incest, creates an uncomfortable viewing experience both then and now. The film doesn’t explictly cue the flashbacks either. No obstante, sus recuerdos tienen él como un adulto, mientras Angélica se ve aún una niña, que genera un sentimiento extraño. Combinado con el incesto, la película es bastante incómoda para ver en los años 1970 y aún más ahora. 

The film faced fierce backlash during the dying embers of Franquismo, especially from the right-wing press, due to the negative depiction of the Nationalists (Franco’s side) during the Civil War. Cannes gave Saura a special award, while back in Spain audiences booed and shouted at the screen. Film producer Elías Querejeta refused to make cuts to the film. Eventually a theatre in Barcelona showing the film was firebombed and the film stopped being distributed in Spain. La película recibió mucha crítica durante las brasas moribundas de franquismo, especialmente de la prensa de derecha, dada la representación negativa de los nacionalistas (el lado de Franco) durante la Guerra Civil. Cannes premió a Saura, mientras en España el público abucheó y gritó a la pantalla. El productor cinemático Elías Querejeta rechazó cambiar la peli. Al final tiró una bomba a un cine barcelonés y dejaron de mostrarla en España. 

Despite all this, it was a box office success and even submitted as Spain’s entry for the Oscars, although it didn’t receive a nomination. A pesar de todo eso, tenía éxito en la taquilla y España la presentó para los Oscars aunque no recibió ninguna nominación. 

Frequent Berlanga script-writer Rafael Azcona co-wrote the script with Saura. Colabrador frecuente de Berlanga escribió el guión con Saura.

First time in Spain and Eurotour (2003)

In 2003, I travelled to Spain for the first time as part of a study abroad program that lead me to Toledo. En 2003, viajé a España por la primera vez para tomar parte en un programa de estudiar en el extranjero que estaba en Toledo. 

I will always remember how overcome I was on the bus from Barajas, the airport in Madrid, to Toledo. Tears came out of my eyes when I saw everything in Spanish. I felt at home instantly, like this was where I belonged. I was finally going to be able to use all the Spanish I had studied my entire life. Siempre recordaré que estaba lleno de emoción en el autobús desde Barajas (el aeropuerto de Madrid) a Toledo. Lágrimas me escaparon cuando vi todo escrito en español. Sentí como si fuera mi hogar al instante de mi llegada, como por fin había encontrado un lugar para pertenecer. Por fin, podía usar todo el español que había estudiado durante toda la vida. 

I explored every bit of Toledo during those three months, and I enjoyed excursions with the program to find traces of Quijote in Consuegra (home of the windmills) and El Toboso (home of Dulcinea). We also visited some remote place in the mountains that was as misty as Ireland, and to this day I have no idea where it was. Exploré cada esquina de Toledo durante estos tres meses, y disfruté muchas excursiones con el programa para encontrar rastros de Quijote en Consuegra (los molinos) y El Toboso (el pueblo de Dulcinea). También visitamos algún lugar remoto (en la Mancha cuyo nombre no me quiero acordar) en la sierra que tenía niebla como Irlanda, y hasta el día de hoy no tengo ni idea donde estaba. 

We had a week off for fall break, and I wanted to go back to London and see new things. Everyone was telling me about Amsterdam, and I wanted to see Paris too. So I found some nice student prices, but this was 2003 and instead of emailing me the boarding passes, they mailed them to my mom’s house. I was anxious they wouldn’t arrive, but they did, on the last day of class before fall break. Había una semana de vacaciones de otoño, y quería volver a Londres para ver más cosas. Todos estaban contándome sobre Amsterdam, y también quería ver París. Entonces, busqué unos precios especiales para estudiantes. Pero como fue 2003, en lugar de mandar por email los billetes, los enviaron a la casa de mi madre. No sabía si iban a llegar a tiempo, pero al final llegaron el último día antes de las vacaciones. 

I don’t remember a lot of this trip to London, other than it was cool and crisp and I arrived at my hotel in the rain. The rain held off for most of the weekend in London, and I walked around town to visit my fave places from the 2000 trip. No me acuerdo mucho de este viaje a Londres, solo que hacia fresquito y llegó al hotel en la lluvia. Pero no llovía mucho este fin de semana en Londres, y volví a visitar mis sitios favoritos del viaje en 2000. 

I went to a Latin gay club and then G-A-Y, and both disappointed me. I’m just not a club person. Fui a una disco gay latino y luego G-A-Y, y ambos me decepcionaron. No me gustan las discos. 

On Sunday I caught the flight to Amsterdam, and I remember how short the flight was. El domingo, cogí el vuelo a Amsterdam, y recuerdo que fue un vuelo cortito. 

The hostel was full of potheads, something that the time I wasn’t interested in. I would rather explore the town, which I did. I walked through the red-light district and saw the coffee houses from afar. I preferred the canal atmosphere.  El albergue estaba lleno con fumadores de marihuana, algo que no me interesaba para nada al tiempo. Preferiría explorar la ciudad, que hice. Caminé por el distrito rojo y vi los “coffeehouses” desde una distancia. Prefería el ambiente de los canales. 

I went to Anne Frank’s house and to the wax museum. I remember going to an Italian restaurant and was amazed that Spanish and Italian had the same word for “chicken” (pollo). Fui a la casa de Anne Frank y al museo de cera. Me acuerdo de ir a un restaurante italiano y me encantó que el español y el italiano tenían la misma palabra para mi comida favorita. pollo. 

I saw a gay club that I went to check out, and I found out after ordering a drink that “clubs” were gay brothels. I finished my drink and left. Quería ir a un club gay, y después de pedir una copa, me enteré que los “clubs” eran burdeles gays. Terminé la copa y me fui. 

I took the train down to Paris, and I wish I had stopped in Brussels along the way, but hindsight is 2020. Cogí el tren hasta París, y después lamenté no hacer una parada en Bruselas por el camino. 

I was excited when the hotel clerk understood me when I asked the one thing in French I knew, “Parlez-vous anglais ou espagnole”? Me emocioné cuando el hombre en el hotel me entendió cuando le pregunté la única cosa en francés que sabía, “Parlez-vous anglais ou espagnole?”

In Paris, I saw the typical things. I went to the Eiffel Tower at sunset. I loved seeing the Moulin Rouge, as it is still my favourite film. I explored Montmarte and visited Notre Dame and the Arc de Triomphe, both of which had stairs that gave me anxiety. As a fan of The Phantom of the Opera, I toured the opera house too. En París, vi todas las cosas típicas de la ciudad. Fui al Torre Eiffel al atardecer. Me encantó ver el Moulin Rouge, como es mi película favorita. Exploré Montmarte y visité Notre Dame y el Arco de Triunfo, aunque ambos sitios tenían escalares que me daban ansiedad. Como aficionado de El fantasma de la Ópera, hice un tour de la ópera también. 

This was at the height of the Iraq war, and I was a bit scared to say where I was from. If I lied and said Canada, they would wonder why I didn’t speak any French. However, when I bought film (remember film cameras?), the salesperson asked me where I was from, and she was really interested in the US, especially as I wasn’t playing the Ugly American role and was apologetic about my lack of French and didn’t assume that she spoke English. Eso fue durante la guerra con Irak, y estaba nervioso decir de donde venía. Si mintiera “Canadá”, pensarían que hablaba francés. No obstante, cuando compré película (¿recuerdas las cámaras con película?), la dependiente me preguntó “¿De dónde eres?”. Ella estaba muy interesada en los EE.UU., especialmente porque no comportaba yo como el “Ugly American” y pedí perdón por no hablar francés y no pensaba que ella sabía inglés. 

I had an all night train from Paris to Madrid, which was…kinda boring. I now remember being in the Irun train station, but I had forgotten it for years. Tomé el tren de noche de París a Madrid que…era aburrido. Ahora recuerdo estar en la estación de Irun, pero se me había olvidado durante años. 

It was a great trip and my first successful trip on my own. As this blog is about, I’ve completed many, many more solo adventures. Fue un viaje genial y mi primer viaje solo. Como este blog es sobre viajar, he hecho muchas más aventuras solo. 

However, I still had one more trip with my mom before the move to Spain. Sin embargo, me quedaba un viaje con mi madre antes de trasladarme a España.

To celebrate the renewal and the beginning of the 39th season of The Pablo Show, we at Setmeravelles have decided to once again publish an exclusive interview.  Ya toca esta parte del año otra vez, cuando el escritor de Setmeravelles, Pablo, cumple años (el día 12 de 12). Setmeravelles: First, let’s just congratulate you on getting renewed for a 39th season. Primero, enhorabuena para ser renovado para una 39ª temporada.

Setmeravelles: It was definitely a challenge to survive the twist in the narrative: Covid 19. Fue un desafío para sobrevivir el cambio de la narrativia: Covid-19.

Setmeravelles: A return visit to Spain and a trip to Canada were indefinitely postpone. Many hikes were too. How does that make you feel? Tenías que aplazar una vuelta a España y un viaje a Canadá hasta…no sé cuando. También no has podido hacer senderismo. ¿Qué tal te encuentras?

Setmeravelles: Congrats on completing the M.A. in Spanish Literature. Enhorabuena en terminar el máster en literatura española.
Pablo: Thank you. You know I finished that off with a paper on Juana la loca…de vez en cuando, right? Gracias. ¿Sabías que acabé con un ensayo sobre Juana la loca…de vez en cuando?

Setmeravelles: You can do that? ¿Te dejan hacer eso?
Pablo: Yep! ¡Sí!

Setmeravelles: We’re going to pretend that Covid-19 isn’t a thing. Any spoilers for the 39th season? Vamos a fingir que no tenemos que preocuparnos de Covid-19. ¿Algún spoiler para la próxima temporada?
Pablo: I recently applied to Ph.D programs, and we’ll see what comes of that, if anything. If I get the vaccination by summer, I’ll be travelling again for sure. I doubt I’ll be able to return to the Camino this year, but that might be a good plot for Season 40. He solicitado a programas de doctorado, y ya veremos que pasa. Si me puedo hacer la vacuna antes del verano, viajaré seguramente. Dudo poder volver al Camino este año, pero puede ser un buen argumento para la cuarenta temporada. 

Setmeravelles: Let’s hope you make it. You’ve done well so far avoiding this virus. Esperamos que lo consigas hacer. Vas bien en evitar el virus. 
Pablo: I don’t ever leave the house except for curbside pickup for coffee and library books 1-2 times a week. It’s a sacrifice, but I don’t want to risk my future with this thing. Es que no salgo de casa, salvo recoger café y libros de la biblioteca 1-2 veces a la semana. Es un sacrificio, pero no quiero jugar mi futuro con este virus. 

Setmeravelles: As it stands, your last trip was to Chicago the first weekend of January. How was it? Por ahora, tu último viaje fue a Chicago el primer fin de semana de enero. ¿Qué tal?
Pablo: It was great. I got to introduce my boyfriend to The Phantom of the Opera and go to that Spanish restaurant. Genial. Tenía la oportunidad para presentar a mi chico a El fantasma de la ópera y ir al ese restaurante español. 

Setmeravelles: That sounds like a great last trip. Any regrets from the year, besides the obvious? Me parece un viaje fantástico. ¿Te lamentas algo sobre el año pasado, que no sea el obvío?
Pablo: There was nothing I could do about it, and I’m actually glad it happened, but I do regret not being accepted into any of the Ph.D programs. But that just means I can stay at home and get caught up on movies and books. No pude hacer nada, y ahora me alegro haber pasado, pero lamento que no me hayan aceptado a ninguno de los programas del doctorado. Pero significa que puedo quedarme en casa y ver pelis y leer libros. 

Setmeravelles: Sounds great. Well, let’s hope that next year for the big 4-0 we’ll be able to report on happier storylines. Me parece bien. Esperamos que, para el próximo año con cumplir 40 años podamos hablar sobre historías más felices. 
Me: We can only hope. Ojalá…

Setmeravelles: Any last words? ¿Algo más antes de terminar?
Me: For the love of god, wear a mask and stay at home! Also, 39 days until Biden-Harris. Can we survive until sanity returns? Por Dios, ponte la mascarilla y quédate en casa! Y solo 39 días hasta Biden-Harris. ¿Podemos sobrevivir hasta la vuelta de alguien normal y decente en la Casa blanca?

El amor brujo (1986)

Aragonés director Carlos Saura has one last story for us told via flamenco, El amor brujo (1986). Director aragonés Carlos Saura tenía una historia más para nosotros contado por el flamenco, El amor brujo (1986).

The film is based on a ballet from Manuel de Falla and tells the story of a gypsy village. Candela (Cristina Hoyos) and José (Juan Antonio Jiménez) have been promised to each other since birth. After their wedding, José defends his lover Lucía (Laura del Sol) and is killed in the battle. Carmelo (Antonio Gades) is secretly in love with Candela and mistakingly sent to prison for the murder. Four years later, he’s released and returns to Candela, who is doomed to dance with the ghost of José for eternity. La película es basada en un ballet de Manuel de Falla y es la historia de un pueblo gitano. Candela (Cristina Hoyos) y José (Juan Antonio Jiménez) se han sido prometidos por sus padres desde sus nacimientos. Después de su boda, José defiende a su amante Lucía (Laura del Sol) y se muere en la batalla. Carmelo (Antonio Gades) está enamorada de Candela, aunque nadie lo sabe, y es enviado a la cárcel por error para el asesino. Cuatro años después, se libera y vuelve para Candela, pero ella está destinado a bailar con el fantasma de José para siempre.

Once again, the flamenco, along with the emotion and passion of the actors, tells the story. I wasn’t familiar with this (in fact, I learnt it was a ballet while researching this entry!) story at all, and I think having a working knowledge of it would have increased my enjoyment of the film. Una vez más, el flamenco, y también la emoción y pasión de los actores, nos cuenta la historia. No conocía la historia (¡de hecho, me enteré que era un ballet cuando estaba investigando esta entrada!), y creo que si la hubiera conocido antes me habría gustado aún más.

It was still worth checking out, and Saura’s flamenco trilogy is one to watch. Todavía vale la pena ver, y hay que ver la trilogía flamenco de Saura, sí o sí.

It’s been a hard year for everyone. Ha sido un año duro para todos. 

I’ve been unemployed since graduating with my M.A. in Spanish Literature, uneligible for unemployment benefits as my university considered me a “student”, not an employee, despite paying taxes on the pitiful stipend I was paid. He estado desempleado desde graduarme del programa del máster en Literatura española, y no puedo recibir nada de las ayudas del paro porque la universidad me consideró un “estudiante” y no “empleado”, aunque pagué bastante en impuestos del poco dinero que ganaba.

I was accepted into a teaching certification program in Colorado that I deferred because of Covid. I’m not sure I can actually afford it at this point. Me aceptaron un programa de certificación de enseñanza en Colorado, pero lo aplacé por Covid. No sé si puedo permitirlo económicamente ahora. 

I’m applying to seven Ph.D programs in Spanish Literature, including Durham in the UK, McGill and Toronto in Canada, and Virginia, Washington, Nebraska and Penn State in the US. Solicito a siete programas del doctorado en literatura y cultura española, que incluye Durham en Inglaterra, McGill y Toronto en Canadá y Virginia, Washington, Nebraska y Penn State en los EE.UU. 

However, everyone is talking about how  grim the job outlook for Ph.D in the humanities, so I am having doubts about it. I don’t even know my chances at being admitted after being shut out of every program I applied to last year. No obstante, todos me dicen que hay pocas oportunidades de trabajo para los doctorados en las humanidades, y tengo muchas dudas. Tampoco sé si me van a admitir después del fracaso del año pasado. 

I would love to return to live in Spain post-Covid, but now I have a boyfriend and I’m not sure I can leave him behind. If I am accepted into a Ph.D program, I’ll have to leave here, which has become home. However, Illinois really doesn’t have any jobs for me. Me encantaría volver a vivir en España después de Covid, pero ahora tengo un novio y no sé si puedo estar separado de él. Si me admiten a un programa de doctorado, tendré que marcharme de aquí, un sitio que ya se ha convertido a mi casa. No obstante, Illinois tiene pocas posibilidades de trabajo para mi. 

I feel so lost right now, and I don’t know what’s going to happen. Granted, none of us do. Me siento tan perdido ahora mismo, y no sé que va a pasar (aunque nadie sabe lo porvenir…)

Another New England Road Trip (2002)

In 2002, my mom and I took to the road again, this time heading east back to New England. En 2002, mi madre y yo volvimos a viajar otra vez, ahora al este a Nueva Inglaterra. 

My mom was especially excited as this time I could share in the driving. Mi madre estaba contenta porque ahora yo pude ayudarle con conducir. 

The first day was a long one as we drove through Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey to arrive to New York City around 8. I took a walk through the neighbourhood and saw actor Dylan McDermott out in the streets. El primer día era largo. Condujimos por Kentucky, Virginia Occidental, Pensilvania y Nueva Jersey para llegar en Nueva York sobre las 8 de la tarde. Hice una vuelta por el barrio y vi al actor Dylan McDermott. 

The next day we explored New York, seeing the building used as an exterior where Friends was shot and I tried to find a restaurant in Little Italy. I loved Little Italy. We also toured the NBC studios and saw Enrique Iglesias. El próximo día exploramos Nueva York. Vimos el edificio que la serie Friends utilizó como el exterior, y intenté encontrar un restaurante en Little Italy. Me encantó Little Italy. También hicimos un tour de los estudios de NBC y vimos a Enrique Iglesias. 

That night, we went to Studio 54 to see the Broadway revival of Cabaret. John Stamos was the M.C. and Jane Leeves was Sally Bowles. Por la noche, fuimos a Studio 54 para ver el nuevo montaje de Cabaret. John Stamos interpretó al M.C. y Jane Leeves interpretó a Sally Bowles.

The next day we drove through Connecticut, stopping at Yale and later Mystic to see some lighthouses, before driving on to Massachusetts. I believe we visited Cape Cod first and stayed in Hyannis at the foot of the cape two nights. El próximo día condujimos por Connecticut. Hicimos paradas en Yale y luego Mystic para ver los faros antes de ir a Massachusetts. Creo que visitamos Cape Cod primero y nos alojamos en Hyannis al principio del cabo. 

During the day, we drove out to Provincetown, making stops in several towns along the way on the Cape. We debated on going to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard, and I believe we did take a ferry to Martha’s Vineyard to see the Kennedy Compound. Durante el día, fuimos hasta Provincetown, haciendo paradas en algunos pueblos por el camino por el cabo. Pensabamos en ir a o Nantucket o a Martha’s Vineyard, y creo que al final tomamos un ferry a Martha’s Vineyard para ver el complejo Kennedy. 

We then visited Boston and Cambridge. While I wanted to see Harvard, I also wanted to see the town where my favourite mystery series took place, the fantastic books about Holly Winter’s malamute adventures by Susan Conant. I did appreciate the older vibe of the town. Después, fuimos a Boston y Cambridge. Quería yo ver Harvard y también ver la ciudad donde los libros fantásticos por Susan Conant sobre las aventuras de los malamutes de Holly Winter tenían lugar. 

We then returned via Hartford, skipping New York and the traffic, through Scranton, Pennsylvania down back to the PA Turnpike, and through West Virginia and Kentucky. I’m sure we stayed the night somewhere in PA as Boston to Kentucky is a long trip for a day, even with two drivers. Volvimos por Hartford para evitar Nueva York y su tráfico, y fuimos por Scranton, Pensilvania hacía el sur y la autopista de Pensvilvania, y luego por Virgina Occidental. Creo que nos alojamos una noche en algún pueblo por Pensilvania porque Boston hasta Kentucky es un viaje muy largo para hacer un solo un día, incluso con dos conductores. 

It would be three years before my mom and I took another trip together, but I continued traveling, as Spain awaited me…sería tres años antes del próximo viaje que hice con mi madre, pero seguí viajando. España me esperaba…

In Bodas de Sangre, the 1981 film from Aragonés director Carlos Saura, a group of dancers prepares a performance of the titular play written by Federico García Lorca. En Bodas de sangre, la película de 1981 de director aragonés Carlos Saura, un grupo de bailadores prepara una actuación de la obra titular escrito por Federico García Lorca. 

It’s the first part of his Flamenco trilogy, and like Carmen, the story is told through flamenco. Es la primera parte de su trilogía flamenco, y, como Carmen, cuenta la historia por flamenco.

It’s not quite as good as the second part of the trilogy, but it’s still worth checking out. It helps if you’re familiar with Lorca’s source text. No es tan buena como la segunda parte de la trilogía, pero todavía vale la pena verla. Ayuda mucho si conoces la obra de Lorca. 

It stars Antonio Gades, Cristina Hoyos and Juan Antonio Jiménez and is available on Flixolé. Antonio Gades, Cristina Hoyos y Juan Antonio Jiménez son los actores principales, y está disponible en Flixolé.
