My big present for my high school graduation was a trip to London.
When the English department at my new high school announced a trip to England, I wanted to go but figured my mom wouldn’t be up for it. Surprise–she was.
It was a ten-day trip focused on some theatre aspects of England, along with some day trips to places nearby.
The Spanish say “es mejor estar solo que mal acompañado”, and it was extremely true on this trip. Neither my mom nor I were happy with the people we were travelling with. We figured this out around the time the other students and chaperones got excited about seeing a McDonald’s.
When we arrived at the hotel in London, the rooms weren’t ready, and nor was the tour guide for the walking tour we had that morning. We were all jet lagged from the overnight flight (I have always hated the overnight flights from the US to Europe designed to “save time” because I can never sleep on them.)
We had various theatre shows to see, and we were all falling asleep during the first one, An Inspector Calls. It was boring, and we hadn’t slept yet.
Over the next ten days, we saw the typical London things, such as Buckingham Palace, Big Pen/Parliament, Leicester Square, St. Paul’s Cathedral (which my mom and I thought sounded like the tour guide was saying “St. Falls), the Notting Hill Market (I was a big fan of the film), Covent Garden and Picadilly Circus. As it was a theatre tour, we did see Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. We heard a lot about the British Museum but didn’t go.
It was the first of three times to London that I did not get to go to the London Eye.
We went on several day trips. One was to Canterbury and Dover. As I had just read The Canterbury Tales during my senior year of high school, I was especially excited to see the cathedral. I really liked the White Cliffs of Dover and got excited about seeing France in the distance. While at Dover Castle, we saw the Queen Mother arriving for an important dinner. Hicimos muchos excursiones.
Another day trip was to Oxford in the morning and Stratford-Upon-Avon in the afternoon. I was really impressed with both and even wanted to go to Oxford University at the time.
The third day trip was to Stonehenge and Bath. We were also supposed to see Salisbury, but unfortunately there was some sort of accident involving a lorry carrying sheep and we were caught in traffic. Stonehenge was interesting, but a lot of people were like “it’s just a pile of rocks.” Like I said, “mejor estar solo…”
We also went to Windsor Castle, and we saw Prince Charles and Camilla.
We saw three other theatre performances. Blood Brothers, a musical about twins separated at birth, was interesting with great performances, and The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) was hysterical, were both included. My mom and I took advantage of an additional musical, one from Andrew Lloyd Webber, called Whistle Down the Wind which I loved. It’s one of his most obscure ones, and it never opened on Broadway. To this day, I can make Broadway fans jealous just by mentioning that I saw it in London’s West End.
On our free day, we took a taxi to see Abbey Road and the world’s most famous Zebra Crossing.
On our last day, we were scheduled to see Westminster Abbey. Unfortunately for us, there was some sort of bomb threat from the IRA (Irish Republican Army). We were all safe, but it was still an experience.
At the time, I started dreaming of living in London, and I decided to study abroad in Spain so I could return to London. While living in Spain, I didn’t go back until my last year, which was to chaperone a school trip of my own.
My mom and I would have a couple more trips we did together, but London was one of the highlights…despite the bad company.
A continuación.
My first trip to England was only five years ago.
At my family church, the adult choir was in residence at Bristol Cathedral for about a week. It turned into a pilgrimage- parishioners, family and friends were invited to join. The trip began to London- my family decided to go up two days ealry- that was when I got to see Les Mis with my mom in the West End

I’ve never been to Bristol, but I have seen Les Mis quite a few times (but never in London). I hope you had a great trip 🙂

Outside of London and Bristol- Bath, Berkeley, Salisbury, Chepstow, Stonehenge, and Chepstow. It also consisted of Old Sarum and Tintern Abbey.
That trip was …..hard to put into words

I still have not been on the Eye. Once I was too early (1987) and the second time we hit the museums first. I was surprised you saw Charles and Camilla in Windsor Castle!

One of these times, I’ll go on the Eye. I’ve been right next to it if it counts for anything.
(Ok, I will have to have someone invite me to go on the Eye because it’s pretty expensive, lol).
I’ve seen more of the UK royals than the Spanish royals oddly enough, and I have been a total of 20ish days in the UK and lived 10 years in Spain (I’ve only seen Felipe during his engagement tour to Letizia in 2003). I saw Elizabeth II leaving Buckingham in a motorcade in 2003 too.

Hm, I’ll keep that in mind about the Eye. ; ) Well, lucky you seeing all those royals. That would be fun.
