In 1994, I visited the two remaining states that I had yet to visit, Washington and Alaska. En 1994, visité los dos estados que me quedaban para pisar, Washington y Alaska. 

We flew to Seattle on July 4th on Northwestern with a layover in Detroit, and we stayed in the Holiday Inn in Renton overlooking mountains. Through the hotel room window, we were able to see fireworks all over the Pacific northwest mountains. Volamos con Northwestern a Seattle el cuatro de julio, con una escala en Detroit, y nos alojamos en el Holiday Inn en Rento con vistas de la sierra. Por la ventana de la habitación del hotel, podemos ver los fuegos artificials sobre las montañas del noroeste del Pácifico.

The arrival night was the only time we saw the stereotypical rainy Seattle weather. We had a taxi take us around different places in the city instead of renting a car. I fell in love with the city and to this day it’s my favourite city in the US. Esta noche de llegada fue la única vez que vemos el tiempo lluvioso típico de Seattle (es como el norte de España). Un taxi nos llevó a los monumentos importantes de la ciudad en lugar de alquilar un coche. Me encantó la ciudad, y hoy en día es aún mi ciudad preferida de los EE.UU.  

We had a couple of days to explore and saw Pike Place Market and Elliot Bay Bookstore (still one of my fave bookshops), took a tour of underground Seattle, saw some of the places they filmed Sleepless in Seattle and had lunch at the Space Needle. The rotating restaurant provided us with beautiful aerial views of the city and Puget Sound. My father took a tour of the King Dome where the Mariners played at the time, which my mom and I were both happy to miss. Tuvimos unos días para explorar, y vimos Pike Place Market, el mercado más famoso en EE.UU creo, y la Librería Elliot Bay (hoy en día aún es una de mis librerías preferidas del mundo), hicimos un tour del Seattle desconocido, vimos algunos de los sitios donde rodaron Algo para recordar, comimos en el Space Needle. El restaurante giraba para darnos vistas impresionantes de la ciudad y el Estrecho Puget. Mi padre hizo un tour del King Dome, donde los Mariners jugaba béisbol hasta 1999. Mi madre y yo estábamos contentos perder este tour. 

We then had a three-hour flight into Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, on Alaska Airlines. I believe one of the first things we did was take a boat trip through the fjords near Seward. I loved seeing the otters swimming through them. Luego había un vuelo de unos tres horas a Anchorage, la ciudad más grande de Alaska, con Alaska Airlines. Creo que uno de las primeras cosas que hicimos en Alaska fue hacer un viaje en barco por los fiordos cerca de Seward. Me encantaban las nutrias que nadaban por los fiordos. 

At some point, we went panning for gold, and I found small flakes of gold. También buscamos oro, y encontré unos pedacitos pequeños. 

We then rented a car to drive north. One of the stops was Denali, the highest mountain in the United States (formerly known as Mt. McKinley) which we took a small airplane tour of that included a stop on a glacier. Luego alquilamos un coche para conducir al norte. Una de las paradas fue Denali, el monte más alto de los EE.UU (antes fue conocido como Monte McKinley). Hicimos un tour en un avión pequeño que incluyó una parada en un glaciar. 

The road between Anchorage and Fairbanks seems to take forever, but it passes through some beautiful scenery and lots of tall trees. We saw a moose from the road and stopped to take a picture. It saw us and started moving, so we got back into the car quickly. La carretera entre Anchorage y Fairbanks parece estar sin fin, pero pasa por algunos paisajes preciosos y muchos árboles altos. Vimos a un alce desde la carretera y paramos para hacer una foto. Nos vio. Cuando el alce empezaba a moverse, entramos el coche rápidamente. 

Fairbanks has a lot of chain places, including a Wal-Mart, where my father grew inpatient and had me called on the intercom, one of the most embarrassing moments of my life, as I was with my mom. Hay muchas cadenas en Fairbanks que incluye un Wal-Mart (un gran almacén muy barato). Mi padre estaba impaciente y me llamó por el intercomunicador. Fue uno de los momentos más embarazosos de mi vida. Estaba con mi madre cuando pasó. 

We took an organized bus trip from Fairbanks to the Arctic Circle. I remember there only being one place to stop for gas and food along the way. After setting foot in the Arctic Circle and touching the permafrost of the frozen tundra, the bus turned around to go back to Fairbanks…and broke down. We were stranded at that restaurant/gas station for a while until they fixed the bus. It gave us time to have dinner, and my mom ordered the salmon, not expecting such a big plate.  We didn’t get back to Fairbanks until 1 a.m., which was still twilight during the summer. Hicimos un tour de autobús guiado desde Fairbanks hasta el Círculo Artico. Recuerdo que solo había un sitio  para gasolina y comida por el camino. Después de pisar el Círculo Arctico y tocar el permafrost de la tundra congelada, volvimos por el mismo camino a Fairbanks, pero con un problema: una avería de autobús. Estábamos tirados en el restaurante/gasolinera hasta que arreglara el autobús. Nos daba tiempo para cenar. Mi madre pidió el salmón, y no esperaba un plato tan grande. No llegamos a Fairbanks hasta la 1 de la mañana, y el sol aún no había puesto. Durante el verano, la 1 de la mañana es atardecer en Fairbanks. 

We later flew back through Seattle, spending another night there, before flying back to Ohio. I’ve always wanted to return to Alaska, especially now after discovering my love of hiking and reading Into the Wild (no worries, no plans to pull an Alex Supertramp here though). Luego, volvimos por Seattle, haciendo otra noche allí, antes de volar a Ohio. Siempre he querido volver a Alaska, especialmente ahora con mi pasión de senderismo y haber leído Into the Wild (“Hacía rutas salvajes”) (no os preocupéis, no tengo planes de comportarme como Alex Supertramp). 

It was the last of our big summer vacations as a family, but I would still continue travelling, of course…Fue la última de las vacaciones grandes que hicimos como una familia, pero seguí viajando, desde luego…
