In 1991, Madrid director Pilar Miró released Beltenebros, based on the 1989 novel by Antonio Muñoz Molina. Although I haven’t read it, I can assure you, the book is better. En 1991, la directora madrileña Pilar Miró hizo Beltenebros, basada en la novela de 1989 escrito por Antonio Muñoz Molina. Aunque no me lo he leído, puedo aseguraros que el libro es mejor. 

Darman (Terence Stamp) is an Englishman who fought on the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War. (Side note: A Spanish republicano is the complete opposite of the US “Republican”.) He is commissioned to kill a mole for the Spanish Communist Party and becomes involved with the prostitute Rebeca (Patsy Kensit). Darman (Terence Stamp) es un inglés quien luchó por los republicanos durante la Guerra Civil española. Le contratan para matar a un topo del Partido Comunista de España y se lia con la prostituta Rebeca (Patsy Kensit). 

The movie is slow, and for some inexplicable reason (ok to keep production costs down and to use English actors…but if you’re using English actors to portray English characters, why not use subtitles?) is badly dubbed. I found it difficult to care about any of the actors. La película es lenta, y es doblada muy malamente por alguna razón inexplicable (bueno, para hacer la peli más barata y para usar actores ingleses…pero si los actores son ingleses haciendo el papel de personajes ingleses, ¿por qué no utiliza los subtítulos?)

The 1960s Francoist Spain backdrop could have been used better and more wisely, but like everything in this movie, just fell flat. Por estar ambientada en la España francista de los años 1960, la película sigue floja y no aprovecha esta ambientación para nada. 

It’s not even so bad it’s good. It’s just bad. Ni es tan mala que resulta buena y entretenida. Es mala mala.
