The next Spanish director I’m going to explore is the Madrid director Pilar Miró. La próxima directora que voy a explorar es la madrileña Pilar Miró.
She was born in Madrid on 20 April 1940 and died on 19 October 1997. She directed nine films between 1976 and 1996 and two of the royal weddings. During the first legislature of Felipe González’s PSOE in the 1980s, she served as “Directora General de Cinematografía” between 1982 and 1985, making several instrumental changes to Spanish cinema that brought an end to the cine de destape (when Spanish directors tried to get as many naked women as possible on the screen without it being porn. No more Brujas mágicas).
Her films include/sus películas incluyen:
- La petición(1976)
- El crimen de cuenca (1979)
- Gary Cooper, que estás en los cielos (1980)
- Hablamos esta noche (1982)
- Werther (1986)
- Beltenebros (1991)
- El pájaro de la felicidad (1993)
- El perro del hortelano (1996)
- Tu nombre envenena mis sueños (1996)
She is one of the most important women directors from Spain. I hope you join me as I explore her short oeuvre, limited to what is available on Flixolé. Es una de las directoras más importantes de España. Espero que me acompañes a explorar su lista de obras corta, limitada por lo que está disponible en el Flixolé.
Hurrah, movies to watch from another directora española! Which would you recommend to start?

I’ve only see three thus far. If you can handle torture scenes, El Crimen de Cuenca. If not, avoid that one by all means and maybe aim for El perro del hortelano.

El perro del hortelano it is!

If the 15th century Spanish in meter is too much for you, then Gary Cooper, que estás en el cielo would be good too. I’m watching Beltenbros at the moment which is also pretty good so far.

I think I can handle the 15th century Spanish since I studied literature and Portuguese. Thanks for the second recommendation nonetheless.

Haha, that can be a chore. I’m being legal at the moment and using Flixolé. $3.99 American (2,99€) a month for a ton of Spanish movies streaming.

Thanks for the tip. I checked the library site because they have a lot of international films, but none by Pilar. Last remaining video store in the US next, then Flixolé. 🙂

The Champaign and Urbana libraries have a fantastic selection of foreign films…which means more on Kanopy I think…but alas, nothing from Miró.

I love Pilar Miró. My favourite movie is, Gary Cooper que estas en los cielos, but all filmography it’s amazing. Thanks for your review!
