The Wild, Wild West Part I (1992).

The trip we took in 1992 was the most epic road trip ever, going through 18 states. El viaje que hicimos en 1992 fue el viaje más mítico de mi vida porque pasamos por 18 estados. 

We left on a Friday afternoon, if I remember correctly, and drove to Terre Haute, Indiana, a place that sounded weird to my ten-year-old ears. It still does today, even though I live about an hour away. I’m sure the hotel had a pool, a requirement for me at that age. Salimos el viernes por la tarde, si recuerdo bien, y condujimos a Terre Haute, Indiana, un sitio que sonaba raro a mis oídos (tenía 10 años). Aún suena raro hoy en día, aunque vivo a sobre una hora de distancia. Estoy seguro que el hotel tenía una piscina porque era un requisito para mi en aquel tiempo. 

The next day we continued west on I-70 to Effingham, Illinois, where we caught I-57 south, which ends at I-55 in Missouri, a state we would explore later on the trip. I-55 took us south through Arkansas, leading us to Memphis where we went to Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley. I remember it being every bit as gaudy as advertised, and I also remember the Tennessee summer heat. I wanted to believe Elvis was alive. El próximo día continuamos a la dirección oeste en I-70 hasta Effingham, Illinois, donde cogimos la I-57 sur que termina a I-55 en Misuri, un estado que exploramos más por la vuelta. La I-55 nos llevó por Arkansas a Memphis, donde fuimos a Graceland, la casa de Elvis Presley. Recuerdo que fue tan llamativo y de mal gusto como nos dijieron que sería. También recuerdo el calor de Tennessee en el verano. Quería creer que Elvis aún estaba vivo. (Nota: I es por “Interstate”, que es el equivalente de autovía en España).

Coincidentally, Trisha Yearwood’s “The Wrong Side of Memphis” was a hit that summer. Por casualidad, la canción “The Wrong Side of Memphis” (el lado incorrecto de Memphis) fue un éxito aquel verano. 

After Graceland, we got back on the road to drive through Mississippi. I believe I-55 took us down to Jackson, where we changed to I-20 West. I remember lots of tall trees in Mississippi and it being dark. Después de Graceland, volvemos a la autovia para viajar por Mississippi. Creo que la I-55 nos llevó a Jackson, donde cambiamos a I-20 Oeste. 

We stopped in Monroe, Louisiana, where we got lost and my dad followed a dodgy taxi to the hotel. I want to believe it was around 1 a.m., but it may have been only 10 or so. It’s ten hours from Terre Haute to Monroe, Louisiana. Alternatively, this could have been in Jackson, Mississippi. Paramos en Monroe, Luisiana, donde nos perdimos y mi padre sigió un taxi sospechoso al hotel. Quízas fue tan tarde como la 1 de la mañana, pero quizás solo eran las 10. Son diez horas desde Terre Haute a Monroe, Luisiana. También quizás estaba en Jackson, Mississippi donde nos pasó. 

The next day took us through Shreveport on to Fort Worth, Texas. I took an instant disliking to Texas, probably due to the heat and humidity and how everything has to be BIG. (Today it’s their politics…) We went to Six Flags over Texas and to a Texas Rangers game. At Six Flags, I was really interested in the Batmobile at the Batman Returns show, which is funny as I don’t like comic book movies at all. El día siguiente nos llevó por Shreveport hasta Fort Worth, Texas. Fue al instante que no me gustaba Texas para nada, probablemente dado el calor y la humedad y como todo tiene que ser el más grande. (Actualmente es su política más que nada…). Fuimos al parque de atracciones y un partido de Texas Rangers. A Six Flags, me interesaba mucho el Batmobile en el espectáculo de Batman Returns, que es interesante porque no me gustan para nada las películas basadas en los cómicos. 

Next, we went north on I-35 to Oklahoma City and through the state of Oklahoma. I know we stopped at a American Indian monument where I wanted a ton of tacky souvenirs, and my mom remembers driving through a random city and seeing it was the home town of her favourite Cincinnati Reds player. Luego, fuimos en la dirección norte en la I-35 a la Ciudad de Oklahoma y por el estado. Paramos en un monumento dedicado a los pueblos indígenas norteamericanos. Quería todos los regalos cutres. Mi madre recuerda pasar por un pueblo y se dio cuenta que fue el mismo pueblo donde su jugadar preferido de los Cincinnati Reds nació. 

We went back through the panhandle of Texas close to sunset, and I remember passing Cadillac Ranch near Amarillo. I don’t remember where we stopped for the night, but I guess it was probably just over the New Mexico/Texas state line. Volvemos a pasar por Texas por su enclave cerca de atardecer, y también recuerdo ver el Cadillac Ranch cerca de Amarillo. No recuerdo donde nos alojamos por la noche, pero probablemente fue cerca de la frontera entre Nuevo México y Texas. 

I remember New Mexico being a lot like the Spanish meseta. We drove through Alburquerque. I guess it was New Mexico where we stopped at some dinosaur monument, and my dad left his had on top of the dinosaur. That always bothered me for some reason. We were eager to arrive to the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest in Arizona, so we didn’t see much in the state of New Mexico. Lo que me acuerdo de Nuevo Mexíco es que era muy parecido a la meseta española. Pasamos por Alburquerque. Supongo que fue en Nuevo Mexico donde paramos en un monumento dedicado a los dinosaurios y mi padre dejó su gora encima de un dinosaurio. Siempre me molestaba por alguna razón. Estabamos impacientes para llegar al Desierto Pintado y Bosque Petrificado en Arizona, y por eso no vimos mucho en el estado de Nuevo México. 

I remember liking both places, and I believe we stayed near Flagstaff, as the following day was the trip to Grand Canyon. I was, of course, impressed. Even then, I wanted to hike it but couldn’t due to the heat and time constraints. Ahora recuerdo que me gustaban ambos sitios. Creo que nos alojamos por Flagstaff, como el próximo día fuimos al Gran Cañón de Colorado (el río Colorado y no el estado). Desde luego me impresionó. Incluso en aquellos tiempos quería hacer una ruta de senderismo por el cañón pero no pude por el calor y el tiempo. 

We saw a lot in Arizona besides the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert and Petrified Forest. I’m sure we stayed another night somewhere when I looked at the distances. There was the Montezuma monument and later the London Bridge in Lake Havasu City. I was most excited about driving a stretch of Route 66, however. I had just learnt about it that summer as the Rand McNally Road Atlas had tons of information about it. Vemos muchísimo en Arizona en adición al Gran Cañón, el Desierto Pintado y el Bosque Petrificado. Estoy seguro que nos quedamos en algun sitio por la noche cuando miro las distancias ahora. Fuimos al monumento de Montezuma y después el Puente de Londres en Lake Havasu City. No obstante, lo que me emocioné más era cuando condujimos una parte de la Ruta 66. Me leí sobre la ruta en el atlas de carreteras Rand McNally antes del viaje y me encantó la leyenda. 

After driving over the Hoover Dam, the next stop was Las Vegas. We stayed at La Quinta Inn, and I went inside Excalibur Casino, which didn’t allow children. I remember a slot machine inside the Denny’s and my dad leaving all the winnings at the hotel. Después de pasar por la Presa Hoover, la próxima parada fue Las Vegas. Nos alojamos en La Quinta Inn, y entré el Casino Excalibur que no permitió a los niños. Recuerdo que había una máquina de casino en Denny’s (un restaurante parecido a VIPS en España). Mi padre se olividó todo el dinero que había ganado en el hotel. 

That was, however, just the way there. We still had to get back. Sin embargo, este solo fue la ida. Todavía nos quedaba la vuelta.

El practicante (2020).

I’ll admit it. I’ve always had a crush on Mario Casas, ever since seeing him and his abs in A dos metros bajo cielo. It inspired me to go join the gym. Lo admito. Siempre he estado infatuado con Mario Casas, desde verlo y sus abdominales en A dos metros bajo cielo. De hecho, me inspiró apuntarme al gimnasio. 

However, my crush does not prevent me from being objective about his talents. He has made some really bad movies, and he relies on his looks to coast through life. I saw him at a press conference at the FNAC in Callao in 2013, and he came off as egotistical and not that bright. Sin embargo, mi deseo por él no interfere con ser objetivo sobre sus talento (o falta de talento). Ha hecho algunas pelis horribles, y depende en ser guapo para ganar la vida. Lo vi en persona en una rueda de prensa en el FNAC de Callao en 2013, y parecía muy egoista y no muy inteligente. 

Still, I usually end up seeing his movies. When I saw El practicante, translated as “The Paramedic” in English-speaking markets, trend on Netflix, I knew I had to see it. No obstante, suelo ver todas sus pelis.  Cuando vi la película El practicante estaba tendencia en Netflix, tenía que verla. 

I wish I hadn’t. Fue un error. 

The 2020 film from Catalán director Carlos Torras is about a paramedic, Ángel (Casas), with stalker tendencies. After an accident involving his ambulance, he is no longer able to walk and requires the use of a wheelchair. His French girlfriend, Vanesa (Déborah François) leaves him. Months later, he conspires to see Vane and later kidnaps her. La película de 2020 de director catalán Carlos Torras es sobre un paramédico, Ángel (Casas) con inclinaciones de ser acosador. Después de un accidente con su ambulancia, no puede caminar y tiene que utilizar una silla de ruedas. Su novia francesa, Vanesa (Déborah François) lo deja. Conspira a ver a Vanesa meses después y luego la secuestra. 

The film is every bit as misogynistic as it sounds. There is nothing empathic about Ángel, and Vane is just a mere prop in the movie. La peli es tan misógino como parece. No hay nada sobre Ángel que genera empatía, y Vane no llega a ser más que un accesorio del argumento. 

Another detractor of the film is that it doesn’t follow one of the most conventional rules of writing, the one about how you don’t introduce a gun in Act 1 if you’re not going to return to it in Act 3. The film clearly sets it up to take place in 2020, and Ángel hears a radio report about a virus killing people in Wuhan, China, that is not mentioned again in the film. Otro detractor de la peli es que no sigue una de las normas más convencionales de la escritura. Si introduce un arma en la primera parte, la arma tiene que disparar sí o sí en la tercera parte. La película tiene lugar en 2020, y sabemos eso porque Ángel escucha a las noticias del radio que menciona un virus que está matando a las personas en Wuhan China que no vuelven a mencionar después. 

Why? ¿Por qué?

I have a better idea for the film. What would it be like for a strong woman to be quarantined with this psycho? Spain had an extremely strict lockdown in the spring, and this would have been at least an interesting plot, even with the wooden acting and lazy direction. Tengo una mejor idea para la peli. ¿Qué pasaría si una mujer fuerte estaba en cuarentena con este psicópata? Había un confinamiento severo en España en la primavera, y este sería un argumento interesante, aunque la actuación y dirección aún serían malas.

En fin…don’t see this movie. No la veas.

New England (1991).

In 1991, I visited New England for the first time. I would visit again in 1998 and 2002. En 1991, visité Nueva Inglaterra para la primera vez. También la visité en 1998 y 2002. 

Our first stop was Niagara Falls. I remember being surprised that the US Falls was only a State Park, not a National Park, and crossing the bridge between the US and Canada on foot. I’m not sure we did the Maid of the Mist this trip, as I’ve been to the falls a few times and they’re all mixed up in my head.  I think we wanted to get on the road, so it was a short trip. Nuestra primera parada era las Cataratas de Niagara. Me soprendió que el lado estadounidense era solo un parque estatal y no nacional. Cruzamos el puente entre EE.UU y Canadá a pie. No recuerdo si hicimos el viaje del barco Maid of the Mist este viaje, como he visitado las cataratas muchas veces y no recuerdo bien cual viaje es cual. Creo que queremos seguir en el viaje, y fue una visita corta. 

New York State and the New York Thruway seems to last forever. I remember passing cities like Syracuse and Rochester, and we probably had dinner at one of them. El estado de Nueva York y su autopista, la New York Thruway, parece no tener ningún fin. Me acuerdo de pasar ciudades como Syracuse y Rochester, y es probable que cenáramos en una de ellas. 

I don’t remember much until Vermont, where we stopped at a lake in the northern part. The river was wild (The Killers song reference), and I got soaking wet somehow. My mom didn’t like the lake. No recuerdo mucho hasta la llegada a Vermont, donde paramos en un lago por el norte. El río era salvaje (una referencia a una canción de The Killers), y no sé como pero estaba empapado cuando llegue al coche. A mi madre no le gustaba el lago. 

I believe we stopped near Concord for New Hampshire, but that’s all I remember about that. For once, I can’t remember the exact order we did things, but I believe we went to Maine and stopped in Plymouth and Salem on the way back. Creo que paramos por la noche cerca de Concord en Nuevo Hampshire, pero no recuerdo nada más. Tampoco recuerdo el ordén exacto del viaje, pero creo que primero fuimos a Maine y luego paramos en Plymouth y Salem por la vuelta. 

In Maine, our main attraction was Arcadia National Park. This is a place I’d like to return to just for some hiking opportunities. We had lobster take out, and my mom and I both hated it. Lobster is everywhere in Maine, even at McDonalds. En Maine, la atracción principal fue el parque nacional de Arcadia. Es un sitio adonde me encantaría volver para hacer senderismo. Cenamos langosta para llevar, y a mi madre y yo no nos gustábamos para nada. Se puede comer langosta en todos los lugares en Maine, incluso McDonalds.

We headed back south through Massachusetts and stopped in Plymouth to see the famous rock the Pilgrims landed on along with the replica of the Mayflower. We also stopped in Salem to visit the museum about the witches (and I’m guessing some sort of Children’s Museum too.) Volvimos por el camino al sur por Massachusetts y paramos en Plymouth para ver la roca famosa donde los Peregrinos llegaron y también había una réplica del barco Mayflower. También paramos en Salem para visitar el museo de las brujas (y probablemente fuimos a algún tipo de museo para niños también)

We drove through Rhode Island and Connecticut, staying in the suburbs of New York. Along the way, my mom developed her love for lighthouses, so I’m sure we saw a few in Connecticut. I want to say we stopped in Mystic or Bridgeport, but I’m not sure. Condujimos por Rhode Island y Connecticut, y nos alojamos en las afueras de Nueva York. Por el camino, mi madre descubrió que le encantan los faros, y por eso creo que vimos algunos en Connecticut. Es posible que pararamos en Mystic o Bridgeport pero no estoy seguro. 

To see New York City, we had a cab take us various places like the Empire State Building. I loved looking at the city from so high above. We also went to the Statue of Liberty and waited for four hours to get to the crown. I developed my fear of stairs here, I think. It took four hours for about forty seconds in the crown. The Statute of Liberty is on Liberty Island, so there was a ferry ride. Para ver la ciudad de Nueva York, un taxi nos llevó a varios sitios como el Empire State Building. Me encantó mirar a la ciudad desde arriba de todo. También visitamos la Estatua de Libertad y hicimos cola durante cuatro horas para llegar a la corona (de la estatua, no el coronavirus, vamos, ¡era 1991!) Creo que fue aquí donde descubrí mi fobia de escaleras. Tardó cuatro horas para cuarenta segundos en la corona. La Estatua de Libertad está ubicado en la Isla Libertad, y por eso, había un viaje de ferry. 

I wish I could remember more about the restaurants we ate at, but I’m sure they were chain places. Ojalá poder recordar más sobre los resturantes donde comemos, pero seguro que eran en las cadenas típicas. 

The cab took us back to Connecticut, and we left at four in the morning the next day to avoid rush hour traffic. I remember seeing the George Washington Bridge at 5 in the morning. We drove through New Jersey south to Delaware, which I remember being flat and watery, before swinging back through Maryland and Pennsylvania. El taxi nos llevó al hotel en Connecticut, y salimos la próxima mañana a las cuatro para evitar el tráfico en hora punta. Vimos el Puente de George Washington a las 5 de la mañana. Conducimos al sur por Nuevo Jersey a Delaware, y solo recuerdo que era plano y había mucho agua. Después, volvimos por Maryland y Pensilvania. 

The Pennsylvania Turnpike, for me, is the most miserable highway in the United States, and as a 9-year-old, I was horribly bored by the road that would never end. We stopped at Gettysburg, and I was sad not to stop in Hershey instead. Para mí, la Autopista de Pensilvania es la carretera más miserable en todo el país. Como un niño de nueve años, me aburrí muchísimo en la autopista sin fin. Paramos en Gettysburg, y me daba pena no parar en Hershey en lugar de Gettysburg. 

That was one long day as we arrived at home that Friday night. Fue un día largo pero al final llegamos a casa el mismo viernes por la noche. 

The next year would bring on the most epic road trip yet…El próximo año será el viaje de carretera aún más mítico….

In Gary Cooper, que estás en los cielos from 1980, Pilar Miró examines the challenges facing women, especially women who work in the television industry. En Gary Cooper, que estás en los cielos, desde 1980, Pilar Miró examina los desafíos de las mujeres, especialmente las mujeres que trabajan en televisión. 

While to today’s viewers, the film plays like a Lifetime or Hallmark movie, it was an important movie for women. Aunque para los espectadores de hoy, es casi como una película hecha para Lifetime o Hallmark (canales estadounidenses conocidos por hacer pelis de calidad cuestionable), fue una película importante para las mujeres. 

Andrea Soriano (Mercedes Sampietro) is approaching 40 and has focused on her career instead of romantic and familial pursuits. When she needs an emergency surgery, she looks back on her life and choices and her lifetime crush on actor Gary Cooper. Andrea Soriano (Mercedes Sampietro) tiene casi 40 años, y ha enfocado más en su vida profesional que su vida romántica y familiar. Cuando necesita una operación de urgencia, hace una mirada atrás en su vida y sus decisiones y su infatuación de actor Gary Cooper. 

Carmen Maura has a small role as a co-worker (I believe a superior) of Andrea’s. Carmen Maura tiene un papel pequeño como una compañero (creo que jefa) de Andrea. 

I’m surprised Sampietro never became more famous as she does a fantastic job in the role, and while the film was dated and dubbed (a lot of Spanish films are dubbed because normal audio was too expensive), it remains important to show what women had to face during the Transition. Spain may no longer have the dicatorship, but it didn’t mean everyone was free. Me soprende que Sampietro nunca ha sido más famosa porque es excelente en el papel, y aunque se nota la edad de la peli (y el doblaje…muchas películas españoles son dobladas porque el audio normal costaba demasiadas pesetas), todavía es un film importante para mostrar lo que las mujeres tenían que aguantar durante la Transición. España ya no tenía la dictadura, pero no significaba que todas las personas tenían libertad.

California (1990).

In 1990, at the age of 8, I was able to fulfill a childhood dream of visiting California. I would love to go back as an adult, as we did a lot of things I don’t remember. En 1990, con solo 8 años, viví un sueño con mi viaje a California. Me encantaría volver como adulto, porque hicimos muchas cosas que no me acuerdo bien. 

We flew out of Cleveland Hopkins International, and I don’t remember if it was direct to Anaheim or not. I believe we went to the hotel and then went to see the then California Angels play, as my parents wanted to visit every baseball park in the country. I don’t care about baseball today, for the record. My mom reminded me that we got lost coming back and didn’t get back to the hotel until nearly 3 in the morning. I’d like to imagine that we saw a young Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal somewhere on those Anaheim streets that night. Volamos desde Cleveland Hopkins International, y no recuerdo si era un vuelo directo a Anaheim o no. Creo que fuimos al hotel y después fuimos a ver un partido de los Angeles de California porque mis padres querían visitar a todos los estadios de béisbol. Actualmente me importa un bledo el béisbol. Mi madre me ha recordado que nos perdimos por la vuelta y no llegamos al hotel hasta casi tres de la mañana. Me gusta pensar que hayamos cruzado con un joven Gwen Stefani y Tony Kanal por algun lado de las calles de Anaheim. 

The next day was Disneyland! I remember slightly more than Disney World in Florida, but not a lot. I remember the parking lot, Main Street, and Splash Mountain and a bit about Treasure Island perhaps. El próximo día ¡fuimos a Disneyland! Lo recuerdo un poco mejor que Disney World en Florida, pero no mucho. Recuerdo el parking, Calle Mayor y Splash Mountain y un poco de Treasure Island, quizás. 

I don’t remember a thing about the transfer from Anaheim to Los Angeles. It looks like about a half hour without the notorious L.A. traffic. I think the hotel was close to downtown. I remember swimming in the hotel pool, a few tours of Hollywood, including the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood Walk of Fame (I know I’ve recently seen a picture of me on it.) No recuerdo nada sobre el cambio de Anaheim a Los Ángeles. Parece que hay una media hora de distancia sin el tráfico de Los Ángeles de infame. Creo que el hotel estaba cerca al centro. Recuerdo que nadé en la psicina, algunos tours de Hollywood, incluyendo el Teatro Chino de Grauman y la acera Hollywood Walk of Fame (he visto una foto de mí allí).

One of the tours took us past the hospital that stood in for General Hospital and mentioned the park where Luke and Laura got married. I had no idea who they were (and ever since finding out, I have hated Lasha with a passion for the record. I asked about Felicia and Frisco’s wedding, and the guide had no idea. Uno de los tours nos llevó al hospital que usaban para General Hospital y mencionó el parque donde se casaron Luke y Laura. No tenía ni idea quién eran (y desde que enterarme, he odiado a Lasha mucho). Pregunté sobre la boda de Felicia y Frisco y el guía no sabía nada. 

At the NBC studio tour, I was selected as the volunteer for something, although I don’t remember what. I do remember being shocked and saddened at the cancellation of Alf. I was EIGHT! My tastes have become more refined since then. En el tour de NBC studios, me eligieron como voluntario, pero no sé para qué. Pero recuerdo que estaba enfadado y triste que habían cancelado la serie ALF. Solo tenía OCHO años. Mis gustos han mejorado mucho desde entonces. 

We also went to Universal Studios, where the earthquake simulation frightened both my mom and me. I also was upset not to be the child chosen for the E.T. simulation. También fuimos a Universal Studios, y la simulación de terremoto nos asustó a mi madre y yo. Luego, estaba descontento porque no era yo el elegido para la simulación de E.T. 

The only famous people we saw were the dog that played Lassie (surprisingly a male dog) and Dionne Warwick talking on a car phone. (She shares a birthday with me by the way). Los únicos famosos que vimos fueron el perro que interpretó a Lassie (un perro, sí, y no una perra) y Dionne Warwick, quién estaba hablando en un telefono de coche. (Tenemos el mismo cumpleaños, por cierto). 

Most importantly, I remember being dragged to Dodgers Stadium and seeing them lose to the Giants. (I traded off support for the Giants to get someone to support my beloved FC Barcelona.) Más importante, recordé que tenía que ir a Dodgers Stadium para un partido de béisbol. Pierdon a los Gigantes de San Francisco (apoyo a los Giants en cambio para ganar apoyo para mi querido FC Barcelona.)

I believe we were in Los Angeles for three days before flying to San Francisco. I remember a bit more about this part of the trip, such as the Golden Gate not being golden (a common mistake, right?), seeing the Giants win at Candlestick after the recent 1989 earthquake and riding a cable car. Creo que estábamos en Los Ángeles durante tres días antes de volar a San Francisco. Recuerdo un poco más sobre esta parte del viaje, como el Puente de Golden Gate no era construido de oro (un error común, ¿no?), ver los Giantes ganar en Candlestick después del terremoto de 1989, y subir el tranvía famoso. 

We then rented a car and drove through the redwoods. We literally drove through a tree. I remember a late night drive to a hotel somewhere with the trees. We stopped in Eureka as someone my father knew from his brief army days lived there. We also crossed into Oregon briefly so we could say I had been there. Luego alquilamos un coche y condujimos por las secoyas. Literalmente, condujimos por un árbol. Recuerdo estar en la carretera muy tarde una noche, con los árboles grandes por todos los lados, a un hotel. Paramos en Eureka para visitar a alguien que mi padre conocía del su tiempo breve en el ejercito. También cruzamos a Oregon por un rato para poder decir que he estado en Oregon. 

It’s a shame I don’t remember more about this trip. Es una pena que no me acuerdo más de este viaje.

Siglo de Oro theatre has never been so cinematic–or so blue–before. El teatro del Siglo de Oro nunca ha sido tan cinemático–ni tan azul. 

In Pilar Miró’s 1996 film El perro del hortelano, the Madrid director found inspiration in the recent Kenneth Brangh’s Shakespeare films and decided to make a film based on a play written by Spain’s most prolific playwright, Lope de Vega. En la película de 1996 de directora madrileña El perro del hortelano, las películas de Shakespeare de Kenneth Brangh le inspiraron y decidió hacer una película del dramaturgo español más prolífico, Lope de Vega. 

Portugal serves as the Naples backdrop in the comedy, which tells the tale of the Countess Diana (Emma Suárez), who is in love with her secretary Teodoro (Carmelo Gómez), who is engaged to her maid, Marcela (Ana Duato). At the time, Naples was part of the Spanish empire. Portugal sirve como Napoles en la comedia, que cuenta la historia de la Condesa Diana (Emma Suárez), quién está enamorada de su secretario Teodoro (Carmelo Gómez), quién está prometido a su criada, Marcela (Ana Duato). En esta época, Napoles formaba parte del imperio español. 

This was one of the films we watched in my “Media Representations of el Siglo de oro” class, and I was the only one in the class who liked it. As a fan of Shakespeare, I wanted to see the Spanish equivalent on screen, and for me, it worked. Other than a few parts cut for time and to make the story flow better, Miró did not stray from Lope de Vega’s script. I found it to be poetic as I followed along with a copy of the story I had found on Amazon for free. Fue una de las películas que vimos en mi clase de representaciónes cinemáticas del Siglo de oro, y fui yo el único de la clase que me gustaba. Como soy aficionado de Shakespeare, quería ver el equivalente español. Miró solo cortó algunas escenas por tiempo y para hacer una historia más cinematica. Fuera de eso, es una adaptación fiel a la obra de Lope de Vega. La encontré poética y sigué el guión con una copia de la obra que encontré en el Amazon gratis. 

The film was nominated for 12 Goyas (Spain’s version of the Oscar) and won half of them, including Best Director for Miró and Best Lead Actress for Suárez. The film lost to the brilliant Tesis, Alejandro Amenábar’s debut feature film (he’d go on to direct Abre los ojos, which is the original Vanilla Sky, and The Others.) Fue nominada por 12 Goyas y ganó la mitad, incluyendo Mejor Dirección para Miró y Mejor interpretación feminina protagonista para Suárez. La película perdió a Tesis, la primera peli (genial) de Alejandro Amenábar. Luego él dirigió Abre los ojos y Los otros.

My summer vacation was a road trip to a town an hour or so away from Champaign-Urbana, and I didn’t even get out of the car due to COVID-19 and how disrespectful US Americans are about not wearing a mask. Mis vacaciones de verano fueron a un pueblo a una hora de Champaign-Urbana, y ni bajé del coche por la culpa de COVID-19 y cómo poca gente en EEUU respetan a los demás y no llevan mascarillas. 

At least I got to go somewhere… Al menos he ido a algún sitio…

My boyfriend and I set out around 10:15 and drove through the heart of Illinois’ cornfields on the backroads. Everything looked green and probably more beautiful than it really is after being trapped in the house for five months. Mi chico y yo empezamos el viaje sobre las 10:15 y condujimos por el corazón de los campos de maíz de Illinois en las carreteras secundarias. Todo estaba muy verde y quizás más bonito que es normalmente después de no salir de casa durante cinco meses. 

Our destination was Casey, Illinois, population 2635. The town is famous for having the world’s largest rocking chair, ruler, pencil and post box, among other things. Nuestro destino fue Casey, Illinois, población 2635. El pueblo es conocido por tener la mecedora más grande del mundo, la regla más grande, el lápiz más grande, el buzón más grande, y mucho más cosas más grandes. 

We drove through the town, and I admit we didn’t see everything. We had previously decided that we wouldn’t be getting out and seeing what we could from the car. It was a good decision as several people were exploring, none of them without masks (which, in Illinois, is against the law due to our mask mandate…) We saw what we could and turned around and went home. Condujimos por el pueblo, y admito que no vimos todo. Antes de salir, habíamos decidido no bajar del coche y solo íbamos a ver lo que podemos desde el coche. Fue una buena decisión porque había muchas personas explorando, y ninguna llevaba mascarilla (y, en Illinois, es ilegal porque tenemos un orden judicial que tenemos que llevarla.) Vimos lo que podemos y volvemos a casa. 

I’d like to go back post-Covid to properly explore. Me gustaría volver para explorar el pueblo más y mejor.

The next Spanish director I’m going to explore is the Madrid director Pilar Miró.  La próxima directora que voy a explorar es la madrileña Pilar Miró.

She was born in Madrid on 20 April 1940 and died on 19 October 1997. She directed nine films between 1976 and 1996 and two of the royal weddings. During the first legislature of Felipe González’s PSOE in the 1980s, she served as “Directora General de Cinematografía” between 1982 and 1985, making several instrumental changes to Spanish cinema that brought an end to the cine de destape (when Spanish directors tried to get as many naked women as possible on the screen without it being porn. No more Brujas mágicas). Nació en Madrid el 20 de abril de 1940 y murió el 19 de octubre de 1997. Dirigió nueve películas largas entre 1976 y 1996 y dos de las bodas reales. Durante la primera legislatura de Felipe González y el PSOE en los años 1980, sirvió como “Directora General de Cinematografía” entre 1982 y 1986 y hizo algunos cambios importantes al cine español que acabaron el cine de estape (cuando los directores españoles intentaban tener tantas mujeres desnudas como posible sin ser pornografía. No más Brujas mágicas.)
