Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone and my first trip out west (1989).

This trip was designed to avoid Chicago rush hour, and yet I somehow got us stuck in it…but I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. Empezamos el viaje con la intención de evitar el tráfico de Chicago en la hora punta. Sin embargo, sin saber como exactamente, acabamos en la tercera ciudad de EEUU en esta hora, pero me adelanto la historia. 

We left in the morning, in probably the 1989 Corsica, and we had to stop at the Studebaker museum in South Bend, Indiana, for my father. Any trip that went through Indiana required a stop at that museum, which neither my mom nor I really liked. Salimos por la mañana, creo que en la Corsica de 1989, y paramos en el museo Studebaker en South Bend, Indiana (la ciudad de Mayor Pete), para mi padre. Cualquier viaje que pasó por Indiana, tenemos que parar en este museo aunque ni a mi ni a mi madre nos gustaba. 

This put us behind for Chicago. I believe I had to use the restroom somewhere near Chicago, which somehow got us turned around and either missing an exit or taking a wrong turn that would have put us driving through Chicago instead of taking the long way around close to rush hour. We eventually got it sorted. Por eso, fuimos con retraso para evitar Chicago. Creo que tenía que usar el baño cuando estábamos aproximando la ciudad, y después nos perdemos, o por perder una salida o por tomar una salida equivocada que significaba que íbamos a tener que conducir por Chicago en lugar de tomar la ruta larga durante la hora punta. Al final nos encontramos por el camino adecuado. 

We had dinner at a Country Kitchen in Wisconsin. I think we stopped in Rochester, Minnesota for the evening. It may have been Winona, because The Judds were my fave singers then, even if I always preferred Naomi to Wynonna. Cenamos en un Country Kitchen en Wisconsin. Creo que paramos por la noche en Rochester, Minnesota, aunque quizas fuera Winona, porque The Judds era mi grupo favorito en aquel tiempo, aunque siempre prefería Naomi a Wynonna. 

The next day we continued on. I know we stopped at Walnut Grove, Minnesota so my mom could visit the Laura Ingalls Wilder site. However, I don’t remember it at all. Continuamos el próximo día. Sé que paramos en Walnut Grove, Minnesota, para que mi madre pudiera ver el sitio de Laura Ingalls Wilder, aunque no me acuerdo de nada. 

I do remember South Dakota being boring at first before slowly getting more interesting around the Badlands, which I questioned what had done so wrong to be labeled “bad”. I was super excited to stay at the Ramada Inn in Rapid City as the hotel had a swimming pool with a water slide. Pero sí, recuerdo que el estado del Dakota del Sur era muy aburrido en la parte del este, pero cerca de las Badlands (baldías), el paisaje era más interesante. Me pregunté que había hecho las baldías para ser llamado “bad” (malo). Me emocioné mucho porque nos alojamos en el Ramada Inn de Rapid City y el hotel tenía una piscina con un tobogán. 

We saw Mount Rushmore, and I remember all the post cards of the other side of Mt. Rushmore which I found hysterical (I was seven going on eight). I remember hearing about the Crazy Horse monument and wanting to see it even though it had just gotten started. We did stop at either Wind Cave or Black Hills Caverns. My mom and I thought General Hospital was filming the return of Frisco Jones there, and I wanted to see the signature of Kristina Wagner (then Kristina Malandro), but she hadn’t been there. Felicia has always been my fave! Only as an adult did I realize that the “two years ago” meant that it was a different storyline where something happened on the show at Mt. Rushmore that didn’t involve my fave character Felicia Cummings Jones Shore Jones Scorpio-Jones Scorpio. Vimos Monte Rushmore, y recuerdo los postales con el otro lado del monte, que me daba mucha risa (solo tenía siete casi ocho años). También me acuerdo de escuchar sobre el monumento de Crazy Horse. Quería verlo aunque no habían construido mucho. Paramos en o Wind Cave o Black Hills Caverns, unas cuevas por la zona. Mi madre y yo pensamos que estaban rodando el retorno de Frisco Jones en General Hospital allí, y quería ver la firma de actriz Kristina Wagner (en este momento Malandro), pero no había estado ella. Felicia siempre ha sido mi preferida. No fue hasta que fui un adulto cuando me di cuenta que “hace dos años” no significaba que filman la telenovela con dos años de antelación sino que fue otro argumento cuando el programa rodó en Monte Rushmore y mi personaje favorito Felicia Cummings Jones Shore Jones Scorpio-Jones Scorpio no estaba.

I’m not sure if we stayed one or two nights in Rapid City, as I know we also saw some of the Badlands too. Another stop was the infamous Wall Drug, perhaps one of the best marketed places in the world. I remember being there in the evening and not being too impressed. I want to go back there now though. Looking at the map, we had to have done it before reaching Rapid City on the way in. No estoy seguro si nos quedamos una o dos noches en Rapid City, porque recuerdo que también vimos las Baldías también. Otra parada fue la farmacia de infame Wall Drug, uno de los sitios con el mejor marketing en el mundo. Fuimos por la tarde y no me impresionó mucho, aunque ahora me gustaría volver. Cuando miro el mapa, creo que fuimos antes de llegar a Rapid City. 

We drove on through Wyoming on the way to Yellowstone, making a stop at Cody to see the Buffalo Bill Historic Centre. I remember at some point driving up a mountain on a winding road, and wanting to see cowboys. I also liked how it was US Route 20 that went through Yellowstone as my childhood home was also off US 20. I also was shocked at having to wear pants (trousers) instead of shorts as it was only in the 60s (about 17 C). Luego, seguimos a Wyoming para ir a Yellowstone, y paramos en Cody para ver el Centro Histórico de Buffalo Bill. Recuerdo que tuvimos que subir un monte en el coche y la carretera era muy sinuosa, y queremos ver a los cowboys tradicionales. También me encantó como fue la carretera nacional 20 que pasaba por Yellowstone, porque la casa de mi niñez también estaba ubicada por US 20. Me dio un shock tener que llevar pantalones largos en lugar de los pantalones cortos del verano, porque la temperatura solo hacía 17 grados. 

I remember Old Faithful and wanting to see a bear, but we only saw buffalo. We drove through Yellowstone and on into Idaho so we could say we had been to Idaho. We then drove on through Montana. I don’t remember much about Montana other than it being isolated. Recuerdo el Old Faithful (Viejo Fiel) y quería ver un oso, pero solo vimos los búfalos. Condujimos por el parque Yellowstone hasta Idaho solo para poder decir que hemos pisado el estado de Idaho. Luego, seguimos a Montana. No recuerdo nada sobre Montana, solo que fue aislado. 

I vaguely remember North Dakota and being excited to stop in the capital, Bismarck, and I believe we stayed somewhere near Fargo, which is far less interesting than the movie and tv show. I believe it somewhere in North Dakota where we stopped at a prairie dog place to watch the animals play a while. I loved them so. Solo recuerdo un poco Dakota del Norte y estaba emocionado parar en la capital, Bismarck. Creo que nos alojamos en algún sitio cerca de Fargo, que no es tan interesante como la película o serie que lleva su nombre. Creo que fue en Dakota del Norte donde fuimos a un sitio para mirar los perros de las praderas jugar. 

Our next destination was Minneapolis to see a baseball game at the Metrodome. I think we also visited the Children’s Museum. We then went south to Iowa, where I’m more certain of visiting a Children’s Museum. I liked the idea of the Quad Cities. We probably drove a long night home to Ohio. El próximo destino fue Minneapolis para ver un partido de beisbol en el Metrodome. Creo que también visitamos un museo para niños. Luego, condujimos en la dirección sur a Iowa, y estoy cierto visitamos un museo para niños allí. Me gustaba la idea de las Quad Cities. Al final, creo que fue un día largo para volver a Ohio. 

It was a great road trip, but the following summer would be another plane trip to a place I had been dying to see for a while…Fue un viaje genial, pero el próximo verano prometía otro viaje por avión a un lugar donde había deseado visitar mucho durante mucho tiempo.

Vivir dos veces (2019).

I stumbled upon a beautiful Spanish film on Netflix that I wanted to recommend. Encontré una película española muy bonita en Netflix que quería recomendaros. 

Vivir dos veces, directed by catalana Maria Ripoll, is about a university math professor who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Vivir dos veces, dirigida por catalana Maria Ripoll, es sobre un catedrático de matemáticas quien ha recibido un diagnosis de Alzheimer. 

Emilio (Argentine actor Oscar Martínez) refuses to believe anything is wrong with him. He still does his math puzzles (refusing to call them Sudoku) every morning over tostada con tomate (which as an aside, I’m really missing). He gets mad when the specialist helping him asks him easy questions. And living with his daughter Julia (Inma Cuesta) isn’t going too well either. Emilio (actor argentino Oscar Martínez) niega admitir que está enfermo. Sigue haciendo sus puzles de matemáticas (que niega llamar “Sudoku”) todos las mañanas mientras desayuna tostada con tomate (he de decir que lo echo de menos mucho ahora mismo). Se enfada cuando la especialista que le ayuda le pregunta cosas fáciles. Y vivir con su hija Julia (Inma Cuesta) tampoco le va bien. 

He keeps remembering his teenage love, Margarita, the one that got away, and he wants to visit her again before he forgets her completely. His granddaughter Blanca (Mafalda Carbonell) helps him figure out new mobile phone technology and leads him on an adventure to Navarra to find Margarita. Se acuerda de su amor adolescente, la que se escapó, y quiere visitarla antes de olvidarle para siempre. Su nieta Blanca (Mafalda Carbonell) le ayuda con los smartphones y le inspira hacer una aventura a Navarra para encontrar Magarita. 

I love road trip movies, and this one is quite special. I won’t say anything to spoil the ending, but it is honestly a great film that I’m glad I saw. Me encantan las películas que tratan de viajes por carretera, y esta es muy especial. No voy a daros ningún spoiler, pero sinceramente es una película genial de que me alegro mucho haber visto. 

The lovely views of Valencia and Navarra just completed this fantastic film. Las vistas preciosas de Valencia y Navarra hacen completa esta película fantástica.

Florida and Disney World (1988).

In the summer of 1988, my family did the typical American road trip to Disney World and Florida. En el verano de 1988, mi familia hizo el típico viaje por carretera estadounidense a Disney y Florida. 

While I don’t remember a lot about that visit to Disney (a 2000 trip with my high school band plays heavier in my mind), I remember the road trip somewhat better, taking I-77 south through West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina and the mountain views.  I know we passed through Columbia, South Carolina and thinking it was related to Colombia the country, where a kindergarten friend had just moved to on a mission trip (the name is based on Columbus so I guess it is somewhat true?)  Aunque no recuerdo mucho sobre la visita a Disney (un viaje en 2000 con la banda de mi instituto es más fresco en la memoria), recuerdo que el viaje mejor. Tomamos la autovía 77 sur por los estados de Virigina Oeste, Virginia, Carolina del Norte y Carolina del Sur y las vistas de las montañas. Sé que pasamos por Columbia, en Carolina del sur, y pensaba yo que estaba relacionado a Colombia el país, donde una amiga de infantil se había traslado con su familia en un viaje misonero (bueno, el nombre viene de Colón, entonces, ¿hay algo de verdad en este pensamiento?)

I know we had to stop somewhere to spend the night, but I don’t remember where.  Sé que paramos por la noche pero no recuerdo exactamente dónde. 

Once we arrived in Orlando, Disney was the main destination. Epcot was still pretty new, and MGM and Animal Kingdom were in the future. I vaguely remember some of the countries in Epcot, standing in line for Space Mountain, seeing some tea cups and “It’s a Small World” (which as a six-year-old, I liked. Not sure I’d say the same 32 years later…)  Cuando llegamos a Orlando, el destino principal fue Disney. Epcoat todavía era nuevo, y MGM y Animal Kingdom aún no existían. Apenas recuerdo algunos de los paises en Epcot, hacer cola para subir Space Mountain, ver las tazas de tea y la atración de “It’s a Small World” (Qué pequeño el mundo es). Solo tenía seis años y por eso, me gustaba. No creo que me guste tanto ahora. 

We spent three days at Disney before driving further south in Florida to the Everglades. I remember the boats that we boarded to tour the swamps and look for alligators. Pasamos tres días en Disney antes de conducir a los pantanos de los Everglades al sur de Floria. Recuerdo los barcos que embarcamos para hacer un tour de los Everglades y buscar aligátores. 

Another stop was Key West. I remember the long, long bridges, which I sometimes feared would never end and we would just drive into the ocean (ok, Gulf of Mexico). It could be a false memory, but I believe there was some type of problem with the hotel or there was a storm. We visited the Hemingway house and I loved the six-toed cats everywhere (even though I am firmly Team Dog). Otra parada fue Key West. Recuerdo los puentes muy largos, que a veces temía que nunca iban a terminar y íbamos a conducirnos al ocean (bueno el Golfo de México). Puede ser un recuerdo falso, pero creo que había un problema con el hotel o había una tormenta o algo. Visitamos la casa de Hemingway y me encantaron los gatos con seis dedos de pie por todos los lados (aunque prefiero mucho los perros). 

The last stop was Miami, and I remember going to Holiday Inn and it was pouring down rain. The only other memory was going to McDonald’s and seeing a menu in Spanish. The bilingual menu awoke in me a desire to learn Spanish. La última parada fue Miami, y recuerdo que nos alojamos en un Holiday Inn y estaba lloviendo a cántaros. Solo recuerdo una cosa más sobre Miami. Fuimos a McDonald’s y la carta estaba en español. Esta carta bilingüe provocó un deseo dentro de mi para aprender el español. 

Driving at night on the way back and seeing lights of cars and passing all the cars made me believe that we were first in some type of line. I remember later driving on the backroads I lived on how excited I was to be the first in line…Por la vuelta, recuerdo que conducimos por la noche y vi las luces de los coches. Cuando los adelentamos, pensé que estabamos los primeros en alguna línea. Después, cuando conducimos por las carreteras secundarias donde vivía, me emocionaba ser el primer coche en línea…

That excitement of being first in a line of cars wasn’t around by the next summer when we embarked on the longest road trip I had been on yet to Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone. Ya no tenía la misma emoción para ser el primer en una línea de coches el próximo verano cuando empezamos el viaje de coche más largo en mi vida hasta este punto a Monte Rushmore y Yellowstone.

Little Ashes (2009).

I recently rewatched the 2009 biopic Little Ashes and I still have the same question now as I did then: WHY IS A MOVIE ABOUT THE FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN LUIS BUÑUEL, SALVADOR DALÍ AND FEDERICO GARCÍA LORCA IN ENGLISH? La semana pasada volví a ver la película biográfica del año 2009 Little Ashes (Sin Limites), y todavía tengo la misma pregunta hoy que tenía hace diez años: ¿POR QUÉ UNA PELI SOBRE LA AMISTAD ENTRE LUIS BUÑUEL, SALVADOR DALÍ Y FEDERICO GARCÍA LORCA ESTÁ EN INGLÉS?

The film isn’t bad, but the fact it is in English detracts. It is a pretty accurate portrayal of when Buñuel (Matthew McNulty), Dalí (Robert Pattinson, yes you read that correctly) and Lorca (Javier Beltrán) meet at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid in the 1920s. The film explores the friendship and what may have happened between Dalí and Lorca (i.e. if their relationship turned physical.) It doesn’t shy away to show Buñuel’s homophobia either. La película no está mal, pero el hecho que está en inglés quita valor. Es más o menos acertada de lo que pasó cuando Buñuel (Matthew McNulty), Dalí (Robert Pattinson–sí, lo has leído bien) y Lorca (Javier Beltrán) se conocen en la Residencia de Estudiantes en Madrid en los años 1920. La peli explora la amistad y lo que, tal vez, ha pasado entre Dalí y Lorca (si su relación era física o no). También muestra la homofobia de Buñuel.

However, as this story is about three of Spain’s greatest artists, it should have been filmed in Spanish. It was Spain’s story to tell. No obstante, como es la historia de tres de los grandes artistas españoles, debería haber grabado en español. Era una historia española y debería ser contada por los españoles. 

The director was British, Paul Morrison.  El director fue el británico, Paul Morisson. 

First trip to Hawaii (1987).

I remember going somewhere and playing outside while my mom went inside for some meeting. The meeting was about the conditions of the trip to Hawaii she had just won. Later I’d find out that she had to pay for my father and I to go with her. Recuerdo que un día, fuimos a una casa y jugué afuera mientras mi madre estaba dentro para una reunión. La renuión fue sobre las condiciones de un viaje a Hawaii que ha ganado. Luego, me enteré que tenía que pagar para mi vuelo y el vuelo de mi padre también. 

I was five, and this was my first big plane trip. I vaguely remember being in the middle of the plane in the smoking section (now I’m really showing my age). The smoke made me sick, so on the way back my mom and I sat in the non-smoking section and I was fine. It was a nine-hour flight from Atlanta, and we flew Delta and they gave me the wings they gave all kids. Delta has always been my favourite airline for that reason. Tenía cinco años, y era mi primer vuelo grande. Apenas recuerdo que tenía un asiento por el centro del avión en la sección de fumadores (ahora sabéis que estoy haciéndome mayor). El humo me puso enfermo, y mi madre y yo nos sentamos en la sección de no-fumadores por la vuelta y estaba bien. Tardó nueve horas dsede Atlanta, y volamos con Delta. Me regalaron las las que regalaban a todos los niños en aquellos tiempos. Delta siempre ha sido mi aerolínea preferida por esta razón. 

I remember various things from the trip, but I can’t remember the order of anything, outside of getting leid upon arrival. The leis were made of real flowers. Recuerdo varias cosas del viaje, pero no recuerdo el orden de ellas, fuera de las guirnaldas hawaianas de flores reales. 

The hotel was on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. The nearby Diamond Head (dormant) volcano fascinated me. I also loved the fact that there was a Fort DeRussey because at the time I lived on a street named DeRussey. We also visited the same waterfalls where Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky the Grifter jumped off of on Full House a few years before they did it. El hotel estaba ubicado en la Playa Waikiki en Honolulu. El volcán (inactivo) Diamond Head (Cabeza de diamantes) me fascinó. También me gustó mucho el hecho que había una fortaleza DeRussey porque vivíamos en una calle que se llamaba DeRussey. También visitamos las mismas cascadas de que Tío Jesse y Tía Becky (la estafadora) saltaron en un capítulo de Padres Forzosos antes de lo hicieron. 

I don’t remember anything about Maui other than the fact we went. No recuerdo nada sobre Maui, solo que fuimos. 

I remember seeing the Grand Canyon of Kauai. Recuerdo que fuimos al Gran Cañón de Kauai. 

I remember a bit more about the Big Island of Hawaii because of Kilauea. I vaguely remember the smell, but I remember most getting off the bus and walking on the volcano. There was some steam coming out and I was convinced we would have to run from the erupting volcano. It is an active volcano that erupted continuously from 1983-2018, so it was erupting, but obviously not at the visitor centre. Recuerdo un poco más sobre la Gran Isla de Hawaii por Kilauea. Recuerdo un poco el olor, pero recuerdo más cuando nos bajamos del autobús para caminar sobre el volcán. Había vapor y estaba convencido que íbamos a tener que huir de una erupción del volcán. Kilauea es un volcán activo que eruptó continuamente desde 1983 hasta 2018, entonces, había una erupción pero muy lejos del centro de visitantes. 

I also remember the black sand beach, which I loved. También recuerdo la playa de arena negra, que me encantó. 

I remember hibiscus plants and pineapples (we visited the Dole headquarters), and I remember taking my Pound Puppies Houndie and Poundie everywhere. (Houndie is with me as I write this.) Recuerdo los hibiscos y también las piñas (visitamos el sede de Dole), y recuerdo que mis Pound Puppies Houndie y Poundie fueron conmigo a todos los sitios. 

Other memories include seeing a King Kamehameha statue covered in leis for the celebration of his birthday and being on stage doing the hula. On one beach, I ran and tripped and fell on coral, skinning my knee. My mom says I was just barely under the height requirement to visit the Pearl Harbor monument so the guide told me to stand on my toes and I was able to go. Otras memorias incluyen la vista de una estatua del Rey Kamehameha cubierta en guirnaldas hawaianas para la celebración de su cumpleaños, y hice el baile hula enfrente de todos en el escenario. En una playa, fui corriendo y me caí encima de coral. Me despellajé mucho. Mi madre me cuenta que no llegué al requisito de altura para visitar el monumento de Pearl Harbor y por eso, el guía me dijo “ponte de puntillas” y al final pude ir. 

Sadly, these memories do not do the state justice, but luckily I remember my 2001 trip a lot better. Lamentablemente, estos recuerdos no hace justicia al estado, pero recuerdo el viaje en 2001 mucho mejor. 

It was a great trip, despite my lack of memories, and it would be followed up the next summer with every child’s dream trip: Disney World. It would be important because it triggered something in me that would have consequences for the rest of my life…Fue un viaje genial, a pesar de la falta de recuerdos. El próximo verano era el viaje de sueño de todos los niños: Disney World. Fue un viaje importante porque provocó algo dentro de mi que tendría consecuencias para el resto de mi vida.

Lola (1986)

What was Barcelona like in the 1980s? Lola, the 1986 film from Catalan director Bigas Luna, gives us a glimpse of the nightlife of the time. ¿Cómo fue Barcelona en los años 1980? Lola, la película de 1986 de director catalán Bigas Luna, nos da un vistazo a la vida nocturna de la época.

After a sexual experience that became too violent, Lola (Ángela Molina)decides to escape her life in the village and ends up in Barcelona, where she meets the Frenchman Robert (Patrick Bauchau). She ends up pregnant from that first encounter and marries him. Years later, Mario (Féodor Atkine), the guy she escaped, tracks her down in Barcelona and believes the daughter is his and begins to stalk Lola. Después de una experiencia sexual que volvió demasiado violento, Lola (Ángela Molina) decide escapar su vida del pueblo y huye a Barcelona, donde conoce al francés Robert (Patrick Bauchau). Se encuentra empreñada de este encuentro y se casa con él. Años después, Mario (Féodor Atkine), el tio de quien se escapó, la rastrea en Barcelona y cree que la hija es suya y empieza a acosarla. 

The film is typical Luna, with the bizarre sex scenes while trying to give more agency to the woman than other films of the time might do. However, it doesn’t always mean he succeeds. Son de mar has a similar plot, and the years long plot is present in both Son de mar and Huevos de oro. The film doesn’t rise above a mediocre thriller unfortunately, and the horrible dubbing doesn’t help. La peli es típica de Luna, con escenas de sexo raras, aunque intenta da más agencia a la mujer que otras pelis de la época hacen. Sin embargo, no significa que lo ha logrado. Son de mar tiene un argumento parecido, y la técnica de un argumento que dura años está presente en ambas Son de mar y Huevos de oro. La película es un thriller mediocre lamentablemente, y el doblaje horrible no ayuda nada. 

If you’re a Luna completionist, or if you want to see a young Ángela Molina, by all means check it out. Otherwise, you can save an hour and a half of your time. The film is available on Flixolé.  Si quieres ver todas las pelis de Luna, o si quieres ver una joven Ángela Molina, te la recomiendo. Si no, puedes ahorrarte una hora y media. Apparently when I was just two weeks old, my mom already had me on a road trip to visit her family in Eastern Kentucky, and at some point she made a trip to Lexington to show me the University of Kentucky to state that that was where I would go to university. Parece que cuando tenía solo dos semanas, mi madre ya me tenía en un viaje para visitar a su familia del este del estado de Kentucky, y también me llevó a Lexington para mostrarme la Universidad de Kentucky y me dijo que iba a ser donde iría a la universidad.

I’ve been a traveller since birth. He sido un viajero desde nacimiento. 

I don’t remember a lot about those first few road trips unfortunately. I vaguely remember a trip to Virginia Beach with my mom, grandmother and aunt. I remember an extremely long bridge that seemed to take forever to cross, and I feared there was no end. I remember going to some Wal-Mart/K-mart esque store. We apparently went to Busch Gardens on the way. No me acuerdo de mucho sobre mis primeros viajes, lamentablemente. Apenas recuerdo un viaje a Virginia Beach, una playa en Virginia, con mi madre, abuela y tía. Recuerdo un puente muy largo que parecía durar para siempre, y me temé que no había un final. Recuerdo que fuimos a una tienda parecida a Wal-Mart o K-Mart. También me dice mi madre que fuimos a Busch Gardens por el camino. 

We also went to Alabama. My mom used to love the country group Alabama, until 2014 when they appeared in tv adverts supporting Mitch McConnell. She hasn’t listened to them since. I barely remember the state of Alabama, outside it being flat and hot. También fuimos a Alabama. A mi madre le encataba el grupo de música country Alabama, hasta 2014 cuando salieron en una serie de anucios de televisión para apoyar el Senador republicano Mitch McConnell. No les ha escuchado nada desde entonces. Apenas recuerdo el estado de Alabama, solo que era plano y hacía mucho calor. 

Another early trip was to visit the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, and I think Rock City at Lookout Mountain, Georgia. I remember it being beautiful and being scared of a bear. My grandmother and aunt were present on all those trips. Otro viaje de mis primeros años fue a los Smoky Mountains (las montañas humeantes) en Tennessee, y creo que tambíen a Rock City en Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Recuerdo que fue precioso y también que tuvimos miedo de un oso. Mi abuela y tía también iban en estos viajes. 

At some point we also went to Niagara Falls, a short five hours from my hometown. I have been there a total of three times in my life, the last time in 1997. También fuimos a las Cataratas de Niagara, pero no recuerdo cuando. Vivía solo a cinco horas de distancia de mi pueblo. He vistado las Cataratas tres veces en mi vida, la última vez en 1997. 

We went places in my home state, Ohio, but outside of one random hotel somewhere in southeastern Ohio where I remember colouring, I can’t tell you anything more. Tambi´èn fuimos a sitios en mi propio estado, Ohio, pero fuera de un hotel donde recuerdo pintando dibujos, que estaba ubicado en un lugar cuyo nombre no me quiero acordar en el sureste de Ohio, no puedo contaros más. 

These first few trips established my love of travelling, obviously, and it’s a shame I don’t remember anything more about them.  Estos primeros viajes establecieron una pasión por viajer, obviamente, y es una pena que no recuerdo nada más sobre ellos. 

The first big trip would come during my fifth year when my mom won a trip to Hawaii…Mi primer viaje grande sería cuando tenía cinco años cuando mi madré ganó un viaje a Hawaii.

This week in my travels through film, I went back to a beloved Valencian coastal town, Denia, thanks to Bigas Luna and his 2001 film Son de mar (Sound of the Sea). Este semana en mis viajes a través del cine, volví a un pueblo querido por la costa valenciana, Denia, gracias a Bigas Luna y su película de 2011 Son de Mar.

Ulises (Jordi Mollà) arrives in Denia as a new Spanish Language and Literature teacher. While having a paella lunch, he notices the daughter of the owner hanging out laundry to dry and listening to “Gangsta’s Paradise” repeatedly. When Martina (Leonor Watling) serves him paella, the two start a passionate relationship until one day his boat is lost at sea during a storm. She marries the rich guy Sierra (Eduard Fernández) in love with her and starts life anew…until she receives a call from Ulises one fateful day…Ulises (Jordi Mollà) llega a Denia como el nuevo profesor de lengua y literatura (española). Cuando come paella en un resturante, está atraído a la hija del dueño quien está colocando la ropa para secar y escuchando “Gangta’s Paradise” sin parar. Cuando Martina (Leonor Watling) le sirve paella, los dos empiezan una relación apasionada hasta el día que su barco se pierde durante una tormenta. Luego se casa el rico del pueblo Sierra (Eduard Fernández) quién esta enamorado de ella y empieza una nueva vida…hasta que recibe una llamada de Ulises un día…

The film is a basic retelling of Virgil’s Aenid and Homer’s The Odyssey. It’s full of Luna’s usual sexcapades (a bit too much, but we’ve come to expect that from him), but it’s also full of stunning shots of the Valencian coastline near Denia. It made me very homesick for Spain, especially my beloved Valencia. La película cuenta la historia, básicamente, del Aenid de Virgil y La odisea de Homer. Está completa con las aventuras sexuales de siempre de Luna (demaisadas, pero ya esperamanos nada menos de él), pero también ofrece panoramas espectaculares de la costa valenciana cerca de Denia. Ahora echo de menos España y en particular mi querido València aún más. 

The film does feel somewhat disjointed, and viewers have to piece together the plot at times. It also leaves the question of…what is the point of the crocodile?  La película es algo incoherente, y los espectadores tienen que rellenar los huecos a veces. También quiero saber cual era el punto del cocodrilio….

Road Trip Series Kickoff.

I recently read Don’t Make Me Pull Over: An Informal History of the Family Road Trip by Richard Ratay, which got me thinking about all the road trips of my childhood. By the summer of my twelfth year, I had already stepped foot in all fifty states. Hace unas semanas me leí un libro sobre la historia de los viajes por carretera en los EEUU (Don’t Make Me Pull Over: An Informal History of the Family Road Trip de Richard Ratay), y me acordé de los viajes que hice con mi familia de mi niñez. En el verano que tenía 12 años, ya había pisado los 50 estados.

Since I’m not going anywhere this summer, outside of the World’s Biggest Rocking Chair located in Casey, Illinois, an hour away from here, I’ve decided to look back at my childhood road trips and vacations. I may not remember a whole lot, but it will be interesting to see what I remember and maybe, over time, trigger more memories of these trips. Como no voy a ningún sitio este verano, fuera de la mecedora más grande el mundo, ubicado en Casey, Illinois, a una hora de aquí, he decedido recordar mis viajes de niñez. Quízas no pueda recordar mucho, pero será interesante ver lo que puedo recordar y, tal vez, con tiempo pueda recordar más. 

My first big flight was to Hawaii when I was five, and my next flights were to California when I was eight and then Washington state and Alaska when I was twelve. The other states were all visited with a car. Mi primer vuelo grande fue a Hawaii cuando tenía 5 años, y los próximos fueron a California cuando tenía 8 y a los estados de Washington y Alaska cuando tenía 12. Visité a todos los demás estados en coche. 

I hope you join me on my journey back in time exploring the United States, back when Trump was just a failed businessman who showed up on cheesy sitcoms instead of a failed President destroying a country, Corona was a Mexican imported beer and people believed in science (don’t you miss those days). Espero que vengas en este viaje por tiempo explorado a los EE.UU, un tiempo cuando el Trump solo fue un hombre de negocios fracasado quien siempre salió en las comedias de televisión más cutres en lugar de un presidente fracasado que está destrozando un país, Corona fue una cereveza importada de México y la gente creía en ciencia (¿No echas de menos estos días?)

Look for this cycle to begin next week with my earliest memories, and each following week a different trip (some may be split into two parts). It will end with the trip to Puerto Rico in 2005 when I was 23.  Unfortunately, all the pictures are actual photographs at my mom’s house, plus I have no more memory to upload new pics here. Espero empezar este ciclo de entradas la semana que viene con mis recuerdos más tempranos, y cada semana un viaje diferente (algunos voy a tener que escribir dos entradas). Acabará con el viaje a Puerto Rico en 2005 cuando tenía 23. Lamentablemente, todas las fotos son fotos analógicas que están en la casa de mi madre, y ya no tengo memoria para subir fotos nuevas aquí.
