In his second film Bilbao, Catalan director Bigas Luna tells the story of a man obsessed with a prostitute during the important Spanish transition. En su segunda película Bilbao, director catalán Bigas Luna nos cuenta la historia de un hombre obsesionado con una prostituta durante la Transición española tan importante. 

Leo (Àngel Jové) suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder and is trapped in a loveless marriage with María (María Martín). He becomes obsessed with the dancer and prostitute Bilbao (Isabel Pisano) and decides to kidnap her. Leo (Àngel Jovè) sufre del trastorno obsesivo compulsivo y sigue en un matrimonio sin amor con María (María Martín). Luego se obsesiona de la bailarina y prostituta Bilbao (Isabel Pisano) y decide secuestrarla. 

The film is quite misogynistic (to be honest I didn’t finish this one), but is an interesting study of Spain and Barcelona during the Transition. I would consider it part of the destape film movement of the 1970s, when Spanish films started showing more and more naked women and sex scenes that weren’t quite pornography. Luna either has yet to develop his technique that enables to criticize sexism or hasn’t evolved enough as a man as he had by his Iberian trilogy, which means the male gaze is all too present and not flattering. La película es bastante misógina (para ser sincero no terminé de verla), pero también es un estudio interesante de España y Barcelona durante la Transición. Yo díria que forma parte del cine de destape de los años 1970 cuando las películas españolas destapaba más y más a las mujeres y tenían más escenas de sexo que no eran pornografía pero casí. Luna o no ha desarrollado su técnica que le permite criticar el sexismo o no ha evolucionado suficientemente como hombre como ya había hecho cuando hizo su trilogía ibérica y por eso hay demasiados ejemplos de la mirada masculino y ninguna es atractiva. 

Spain was at the time wanting to see what it could get away with on the screen after the censorship of Franco. Three years after his death, Spain ratified their current constitution, and filmmakers no longer had to worry about being censored. Unfortunately, these films often aged horribly. En este momento, España quería cruzar los límites en sus películas después de la censura de Franco. Tres años después de la muerte del dictador, España ratificó su constitución actual, y los directores no tenían que preocupuarse de la censura. Lamentablemente, las películas ahora no están vistas de la misma manera. 

I had previously tried to watch this one a few years ago whilst living in Bilbao and the same thing happened. I didn’t finish it. So viewer discretion advised. I’ll give his other films a chance, and if they are interesting enough, I’ll write about them here. Intenté verla hace unos años cuando estaba viviendo en Bilbao, y me pasó lo mismo. No la terminé.
