The second film in Bigas Luna’s Iberian trilogy is the 1993 Huevos de oro, or translated into English, “Balls of gold”. Just imagine the toxic masculinity. La segunda entrada de la triología ibérica de Bigas Luna es Huevos de oro (1993). 

Benito González (Javier Bardem) is a typical macho Spanish dude in the military, finishing his service in Melilla. His friend ends up stealing the girl he loved, and he loses it. Having been emasculated, he now erects a phallic skyscraper in Benidorm. However, his arrogance and machismo lead to an accident and him losing everything and his attempts to rebuild a new life in Miami are fruitless. Benito González (Javier Bardem) es el típico macho ibérico militar y está terminando su servicio en Melilla. Su mejor amiga le roba su chica, y pierde los papeles. Ahora castrado (figurativamente), va a Benidorm para erigir rascacielos, pero su arrogancia y machismo provoca un accidente de coche. Pierde todo y sus intentos de construir una vida nueva en Miami no va a ningún sitio. 

The film is filled with phallic imagery that represent Benito’s shortcomings. He tries to juggle a rich wife and a mistress who he actually loves and even tries to start a thruple with the two. La película tiene muchas alusiones fálicas que representan los defectos de Benito. Intenta hacer malabarismos con una esposa rica y una amante que quiere de verdad y intenta empezar un thruple con las dos mujeres. 

Luna hopes to show how destructive machismo is in this film by the downward spiral of Benito. However, the film falls a bit flat compared to Jamón jamón, and a sluggish third act that seems to come out of nowhere causes the film not to live up to its potential. It’s still worth seeing for an early performance from Maribel Verdú as his lover Claudia and Bardem’s performance, as well as the direction from Luna. Luna pretende mostrar que el machismo destruye con las pérdidas de Benito. No obstante, la película no es tan buena como Jamón jamón, y el tercer acto es muy floja y no tiene sentido y por eso, no llega a cumplir su potencial. Vale la pena verla por la actuación de una joven Maribel Verdú como su amante Claudia y también la actuación de Bardem, además la dirección de Luna.
