Only Spain could make a movie with a title referring to “ham”, and then have it launch the careers of not one but three actors (Penélope Cruz, her husband Javier Bardem, and Jordi Mollà). Solo España puede hacer una película con un título de “jamón” y luego ser la película que empezó la carrera de no uno sino tres actores (Penélope Cruz, su marido Javier Bardem, y Jordi Mollà). 

Catalán director Bigas Luna shows the sordid lives of the people that inhabit España profunda–aka la España vacía or la España vaciada–in this sexualized flick that satirizes machismo. El director catalán Bigas Luna nos enseña las vidas sórdidas de las personas que viven en la España profunda–también conocida como la España vacía o la España vaciada–en esta peli sexualizada que es una sátira del machismo. 

Silvia (Penélope Cruz) is the daughter of the owner of a roadside club (European for brothel)  who is sleeping with the son, El Niñato (Jordi Mollà) of a business woman (Stefania Sandrelli)  and finds herself pregnant. The business woman, in charge of finding new masculine underwear models, finds Raúl (Javier Bardem), who exudes stereotypical Spanish machismo with every move. She seduces Raúl and hires him to seduce Silvia to ensure her son doesn’t end up with the wrong kind of woman. As the relationship between Silvia and El Niñato goes bad, she finds herself more and more attracted to the man who used to repulse her, Raúl. Jealousy abounds and it’s a fight to the death with jamón. Silvia (Penélope Cruz) es la hija de la dueña de un puticlub de carretera quien está acostándose con el Niñato (Jordi Mollà), el hijo de una mujer de negocios (Stefania Sandrelli) y se queda embarazada. La mujer de negocios, en cargo de encontrar nuevos modelos de calzoncillos masculinos y conoce a Raúl (Javier Bardem), quien exhibe el machismo estereotípico español con cada movimiento. Seduce a Raúl y le contrata para seducir a Silvia porque no quiere que su hijo se case con este clase de mujer. Cuando la relación entre Silvia y el Niñato termina, Silvia está más y más atraído al hombre que antes le repulsaba, Raúl. Con todos los celos entre los hombres, todo acaba con una lucha a la muerte con jamón. 

The film is the first part of Luna’s Iberian trilogy, and the character of Raúl criticizes the infamous machismo of the Iberian male. He fights bulls naked and makes horrible sexual innuendos to Silvia. With such a ridiculous character, Luna is able to show how ridiculous this type of what we refer today as “toxic masculinity” is and how it destroys both men and women. La peli es la primera parte de la trilogía ibérica de Luna, y el personaje de Raúl es una critica del machismo de infame del varón ibérico. Finge ser torero desnudo y hace comentarios sexuales horribles a Silvia. Con un personaje tan ridículo, Luna puede mostrar el ridículo lo que llamamos “toxicidad masculina” actualmente y como destroza a tanto los hombres como las mujeres. 

El Niñato serves to criticize the idle rich who lives off his parents and is used to having everything given to him. (SPOILER ALERT) His death illustrates that this type of life will end in destruction. El Niñato sirve para criticar a los ricos ociosos quien vive de sus padres y está acostumbrado a tener todo lo que quiera. (AVISO DE SPOILER) Su muerte ilustra que este tipo de vida acabará en destrucción. 

The film uses so many Spanish topes that it may be hard to understand without an intimate knowledge of the country. Luna deconstructs Iberian masculinity. El film utiliza tantos tropos españoles que puede ser difícil de entender para los que no conoce el país bien. Luna desmonta la masculinidad ibérica. 

Needless to say, to criticize the toxicity of machismo, the film does not do a good job of representing woman. Silvia starts out strong with her rejection of Raúl but ends up falling to his whim when she sleeps with him after a fight with El Niñato, all under the giant Osborne bull. Sin embargo, para criticar la toxicidad del machismo, la peli no representa las mujeres bien. Silvia empieza bien con su rechazo de Raúl pero al final no le puede resistir cuando se acuesta con él después de una discusión con El Niñato, todo bajo el toro gigante de Osborne. 

The film captures the barrenness of la España vacía (empty Spain) beautifully, with the isolated landscape captured painstakingly on screen. Viewers can see the lack of options most of the characters had and the sharp contrast between two Spains, those with money and those without. Es genial como la película también captura la aridez de la España vacía, con el paisaje aislado mostrado meticulosamente en la pantalla. Los espectadores pueden entender la falta de opciones que la mayoría de los personajes tenían y el contraste entre las dos Españas, la de los con dinero y la de los sin dinero. 

The film has nudity, lots of sex and cruelty to animals (torture and death of a pig, bullfighting), so viewer discretion advised. Hay mucha desnudez y también crueldad animal (la tortura y la muerte de un cerdo, la tauromaquia), entonces, prepárate. 

The 1992 film holds up today with this critique of machismo. It is interesting that the film explores Iberian masculinity the same year the world’s attention was on Spain for the Olympics in Barcelona, the expo in Sevilla and the 500th anniversary of Columbus’s arrival to the Americas. Do with that what you will. La peli de 1992 todavía tiene importancia con su critica de machismo. Es interesante que la película explorara la masculinidad ibérica el mismo año que todo el mundo estaba mirando a España por los Juegos Olímpicos en Barcelona, la expo de Sevilla y el aniversario de la llegada de Colón a las Américas. Haz con eso lo que quieras.
