I was browsing the wide variety of options on Netflix when I stumbled upon Diecisiete (Seventeen), a 2019 delightful film directed by Madrid director Daniel Sánchez Arévalo. The film was a coming of age flick and had a dog and a road trip, so I had to check it out for myself. Estaba mirando la variedad de opciones en Netflix cuando encontré Diecisiete, una película encantadora de 2019 dirigida por director madrileño Daniel Sánchez Arévalo. Es una peli adolescente que tenía un perro y un viaje por carretera, y por eso tenía que verla. 

Héctor (Biel Montoro) is a teenager living in the department stores of Santander when he is caught and sent to a juvenile detention centre where he makes various escape attempts to have the excuse of isolation so he can study the penal code law book the judge gave him. When a dog therapy group comes by, he makes a connection with a dog named Oveja. Héctor (Biel Montoro) es un adolescente que vive en los grandes almacenes de Santander cuando lo pillan y lo mandan a un centro de detención de menores de lo cual intenta escapar varias veces para tener la excusa de estar en aislamiento para que pueda estudiar el libro de código penal español que la jueza le dio. Cuando viene un grupo de terapia de perros, hace una conexión con un perro que se llama Oveja. 

Unfortunately for Héctor, the dog gets adopted. He makes a final escape and visits his dying grandmother (Lola Cordón) where his brother Ismael (Nacho Sánchez) catches up with him. The two take off on a road trip through Cantabria to find the puppy but, because it is a road trip film, they ultimately find a stronger relationship between themselves. Lamentablemente por Héctor, alguien adopta al perro. Hace un escape final y visita a su abuela moribunda (Lola Cordón) donde su hermano Ismael (Nacho Sánchez) lo pilla. Los dos hacen un viaje por Cantabria infinita para encontrar el perrito pero, porque es una peli de viajes, al final la película trata más de como los hermanos aprenden a relacionarse.

In a time of pandemic, the film offered a chance to return to the beautiful Cantabria. The stunning landscapes in the background added to the story. En los tiempos de pandemia, la película ofrece una oportunidad para visitar Cantabria, un sitio precioso. El paisaje impresionante mejora la historia. 

Sánchez Arévalo has made films like Primos and La gran familia española, but this one might be his best yet due to its simplicity. It isn’t going for big laughs like others in his oeuvre. It simply just shows two brothers who have become distant try to get to know each other, all for the love of a dog. Sánchez Arévalo también dirigió películas como Primos y La gran familia española, pero quizás esta sea su mejor peli dada la simplicidad. No va por las grandes risas como sus otras películas. Simplemente es la historia de dos hermanos distantes que tienen una oportunidad conocerse mejor, todo por el amor por un perro. 

It is available on Netflix in the US, at least, as of the date of publication 1 June 2020. Está disponible en Netflix en los EE.UU, al menos en el día de publicación 1 de junio de 2020.
