Chicago 2020 (While You Were Sleeping)

In high school, my favourite movie was While You Were Sleeping, and Sandra Bullock has always been one of my favourite actresses. The film is still a must-see every Christmas Eve. Cuando estaba en el instituto, mi película favorita era Mientras dormías. Sandra Bullock siempre ha sido una de mis actrices preferidas. Siempre veo la película cada Nochebuena. 

My boyfriend and I had tickets to see Phantom of the Opera at the Cadillac Palace Theatre in downtown Chicago, and I convinced him to make a few stops along the way to visit a few filming places. Mi chico y yo tenía entradas para ver Fantasma de la Opera en el Teatro Cadillac Palace en el centro de Chicago, y le convincé hacer unas paradas por el camino para visitar a unos sitios donde rodearon. 

The house that served as the Callaghan’s home is located in La Grange, a suburb of Chicago. The apartment complex that served as Lucy’s apartment building is in the outskirts of Chicago on Logan Boulevard. We ate at a horrible burger joint nearby the complex. Logan Boulevard is still popular with film crews, as they were posting notices that Chicago Fire would be filming there soon. La casa que sirvó como la casa de los Callaghan está ubicado en La Grange, un suburbio de Chicago. El bloque de pisos que sirvió como el de Lucy está en las periferias de Chicago en Logan Boulevard. Comemos en la peor hamburguesería cerca del edificio. Logan Boulevard todavía es popular para rodear como estaban poniendo avisos que iban a rodear Chicago Fire allí pronto. 

We checked into the hotel, somehow surviving traffic, and killed time before the show. Fuimos al hotel para hacer tiempo antes del espectáculo. No sé como sobrevivimos el tráfico.

As a long-time Phantom diehard to the point I named a pet cat “Phantom”, I must say the changes they have made to the tour version have destroyed some of the magic of the show. My boyfriend, who had never seen it, was still impressed, but come on. “Masquerade” without the staircase is not “Masquerade”! Como un friki de El Fantasma de la Opera (tenía un gato quien se llamaba “Phantom”), he de decir que no me gustan nada los cambios que hicieron. A mi chico, quien nunca lo había visto, le gustaba mucho, pero venga. ¡”Masquerade” sin la escalera no es “Masquerade”!

Friday morning, we got up to explore the University of Chicago campus. The buildings are beautiful and historic. Afterwards, we went to Café Ibérico for the customary patatas bravas and paella (and my relaxing café con leche). Every trip to Chicago includes a trip to this restaurant. El viernes por la mañana, fuimos a explorar la Universidad de Chicago. Los edificios son bonitos y históricos. Después, como hacemos en cualquier viaje a la “Segunda Ciudad”, comemos patatas bravas y paella en el Café Ibérico. Desde luego, me tomé un relaxing café con leche. 

It wasn’t the best Chicago visit ever, and the grey skies over the lifeless Lake Michigan represented perfectly my current mood. However, any trip is always better than no trip at all. Para ser sincero, no era el mejor viaje a Chicago. Los cielos grises sobre el apagado Lago Michigan representaban mi humor actual. Sin embargo, cualquier viaje siempre es mejor que no viajar.

Viaje al pueblo en Ohio.

During Thanksgiving break, my boyfriend and I travelled to mi pueblo in north-central Ohio (near Sandusky). While the midwestern scenery often leaves much to be desired, it was still a good trip. Durante las vacaciones del Día de Acción de Gracias, mi chico y yo viajamos a mi pueblo en la zona norte-central de Ohio, cerca de Sandusky. Aunque el paisaje del medioeste no es muy bonito, fue un buen viaje. 

We left around 8:30 headed east on I-74. Our first stop was West Lafayette, Indiana. I remembered my spring break in 2008 when I visited a friend who attended Purdue. For some reason, my mind had convinced me it was Indiana University in Bloomington, but upon arrival in West Lafayette, I remembered it was this town. We stopped at a coffee shop that ended up being Christian oriented and even frequented by Amish or Mennonites! Salimos sobre las 8.30 en la dirreción este de I-74. Nuestra primera parada fue West Lafayette, Indiana. Me acordé de un viaje durante mis vacaciones de primavera en 2008 cuando visité a un amigo quien asistía a la Universidad de Purdue. No sé porque, pero pensaba que era Indiana University en Bloomington, pero cuando llegamos en West Lafayette, me acordé que fue allí. Paramos en un café que era cristiano (no sabíamos). Incluso había clientes Amish o menonita. 

We then continued on to Fort Wayne, which is pretty much the Toledo, Ohio, of Indiana. We went to Burger-Fi for a late lunch and visited another coffee shop nearby, trying to avoid rush hour in Toledo. We ended up catching the tail end of it. Luego, continuamos a Fort Wayne, que más o menos es la Toledo de Ohio de Indiana. Comemos en el Burger Fi y visitamos a otro café cerca porque queríamos evitar el tráfico de Toledo. Aún así, estabamos en los finales de la hora punta de tráfico. 

We drove on to Sandusky, where we stayed. The city has changed a lot since I moved away in 1999, but at the same time, it still felt like home. I wanted to visit the Sandusky Mall, where I had gone so much growing up. I’m a bit proud of it still existing, but at the same time, its glory years have passed. Continuamos hasta Sandusky, donde nos alojamos. La ciudad ha cambiado mucho desde que me trasladé en 1999, pero a la misma vez, me sentía en casa. Quería ir al centro comercial Sandusky Mall, donde iba tantas veces durante mi niñez. Me alegro de que todavía existe, aunque ya no es como era. 

Saturday we got up early and went to the Marblehead Lighthouse. The lighthouse is the oldest American lighthouse on the Great Lakes, although during our visit it was under construction. As the skies were clear, we could see the Cedar Point amusement park, another place I spent countless hours at growing up. El sábado, nos levantamos pronto y fuimos al Faro Marblehead. El faro es el más antiguo estadounidense en los Grandes Lagos, pero cuando lo visitamos, estaba en obras. Habia cielos despejados, y pudimos ver el parque de atraciones Cedar Point, otro sitio donde pasaba muchas horas durante mi niñez.

We then met up with my two best friends from high school and chatted a while before heading down to the Ohio capital, Columbus. As I do not acknowledge the existence of American football as a sport nor the existence of Ohio State, I did not realise there was some sort of match that day. The entire city of 892,533 was a traffic nightmare, and needless to say, we were not impressed. Después, tomamos un café con mis mejores amigas del instituto y charlamos un rato antes de ir a la capital de Ohio, Columbus. Como no reconozco el fútbol americano como un deporte que existe ni la universidad de Ohio State como algo que existe, no me di cuenta que había un tipo de partido este día. La ciudad entera de 892.533 habitantes era una pesadilla de tráfico. La ciudad nos decepcionó. 

Sunday we drove back home, stopping at a reservoir near Springfield, Ohio. El domingo volvimos a Illinois, con una parada en un embalse cerca de Springfield, Ohio. 

It was a short but good trip to regenerate after the semester I was experiencing. Fue un viaje corto pero bueno para recuperarme del semestre que tenía. 

Kickapoo.

Kickapoo State Park is located 45 km (28 miles) from the UIUC campus, and I’ve been meaning to go there ever since arriving here.  The Vermilion River runs through the park, and there are several hiking paths and options for canoeing and camping too. It’s popular in winter for cross-country skiing and ice-fishing. In the autumn, however, it offers some beautiful foliage. El parque estatal Kickapoo está ubicado a 45 kilómetros de la  Universidad de Illinois-Champaign, y he querido visitarlo desde mi llegada aquí. El Río Vermilion (Bermellón) está en el parque, y hay muchos senderos y opciones para hacer piragüismo o acampar. En el invierno, se puede esquiar y pescar en hielo. En el otoño, sin embargo, ofrece follaje bonito. 

One October Sunday morning, my boyfriend and I took off to Danville to go for a short hike in the park. The trail we chose had some haunted figures. I’m not sure if they are always there or if it’s something to do for Halloween. Una mañana de domingo de octubre, mi chico y yo fuimos a Danville para hacer una ruta corta en el parque. La ruta que hicimos tenía algunas figuras encantadas. No estoy seguro si solo están durante Halloween y siempre están allí. 

The Clear Lake Trail offered some nice views, and I bet the views of some of the ponds are better in the winter without the plants getting in the way. La senda “Clear Lake” (Lago Claro) ofrece vistas bonitas, y imagino que las vistas de algunos de los charcos se ven mejor en el invierno sin las plantas que obstruyen las vistas. 

Kickapoo is a much-see park for anyone in the central Illinois area. Hay que visitar a Kickapoo si pasas por la zona central de Illinois. 

Unfortunately, I have no more space to upload pictures on WordPress, so if anyone can help me figure out how to use pictures now, I’d appreciate it (since Flickr charges, that’s also not an option.) Lamentablemente, ya no tengo espacio suficiente para subir fotos en WordPress. Si alguien conociera otra manera para poder usar fotos, lo agradecería (como ahora Flickr cobra dinero, tampoco es una opción.) 

2020 retos y esperanzas.

2020 has to be better than the last few months, right? Here are a few of my goals and hopes for the year. 2020 tiene que ser mejor que los últimos meses, ¿no? Algunos de mis retos y esperanzas para 2020 son los siguientes. 

  1. Figure out what I’m going to do with the rest of my life. With the recent setback, I’m at a loss.  I’m waiting for word from the Unis of Chicago and Colorado-Boulder, and if that falls through…what then? How can I get paid for writing, reading, travelling, hiking, and playing with dogs? Hacer una decisión sobre el resto de mi vida. Con la complicación reciente, estoy perdido. Estoy esperando noticias de las Universidades de Chicago y Colorado-Boulder, y si me dicen no…¿qué? ¿Hay curro para escribir, leer, viajar, hacer senderismo y jugar con perros?
  2. Repeat from 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2015 etc. Come out to my mom. It has to be done. I’m pretty okay with being gay. It’s more about the potential fallout as my mom is getting old and doesn’t have a very open attitude about gays.. Repito de 2016, 2015…etc. Salir del amario a mi madre. Tengo que hacerlo. Estoy bien con ser gay. Es más de los efectos colaterales como mi madre está haciéndose mayor y no tiene una mente abierto sobre los gays. 
  3.  Continue work on a positive ascent out of the abysmal hole that depression and anxiety can take me. I started meditating in 2017, and I lost track of that in the summer. I plan to get back to it and try yoga for real (another repeat). Fun fact, I didn’t even change the wording from when I wrote it last year! LOL, and 2019 was even worse for this… Seguir trabajando en subir desde el abismo que es depresión y ansiedad. Empecé a mediar en 2017, aunque lo dejé durante el verano. Espero volver a ello e intentar yoga (otra repetición.) De hecho, no he cambiado nada desde cuando lo escribí el año pasado. Jaja, y 2019 fue peor para eso. 
  4. Return to the gym and get back to my Spain weight. The second half of 2019 was disaster for not only my mental health but also my physical health.. I would like to try yoga and some sort of CrossFit (but the latter requires money I don’t have). I hope to get back to Body Combat and Body Pump soon. Also give up soda again and less coffee. Volver al gimnasio y también a mi peso de cuando estaba en España. La segunda mitad de 2019 fue un desastre no solo para la salud mental sino también la salud física. Me gustaría probar yoga y algo parecido a CrossFit (aunque requiere dinero que no tengo). Espero volver a Body Combat y Body Pump pronto. También dejar refrescos otra vez y beber menos café. 
  5. Kept from 2018, as I did NOTHING in regards to this last year. Continue to submit my novels for publication.  I need to edit and get published or explore self-publication. I also want to get back into writing fiction. Desde 2018, como no hice nada en 2018 para lograr eso. Seguir enviando mis novelas para publicación. Ahora necesito editar y  publicar la primera o hacer auto-publicación. También quiero volver a escribir ficción. 
  6. Also kept from last year. Learn to cook and start to meal plan and eat healthy. Another I say every year. También desde el año pasado. Aprender a cocinar y empezar a planificar las comidas  y comer sano. Otro que digo todos los años. 
  7. Travel and hiking goals. I want to go to a lesser known National Park this summer. I want to think Camino Catalán or Aragonés but probably won’t have the money. Retos de viajar y senderismo: Quiero ir a un Parque Nacional menos conocido este verano. Me gustaría pensar en o el Camino Catalán o Aragonés pero no creo disponer de la pasta. 
  8. Try kayaking. On the list since 2015. Ummm. Might as well add rock climbing here too! Probar hacer piriguismo, en la lista desde 2015. Umm, bueno, voy a añadir escalar también. 
  9. Work toward being able to be a padre to a beautiful golden ‘triever dog.  Trabajar para poder adoptar un perro golden ‘triever y un piso para mi solo.  Quiero decir ahorrar dinero. 
  10. Visit Michigan, Green Bay, Minnesota and either Maine, Pacific Northwest or a Canadian Province I haven’t been to. Visitar Michigan, Green Bay, Minnesota y o Maine, el Noroeste Pácifico o una provincia canadiense que no conozco. 
  11. From 2017 still exploring. Explore a Buddist approach to Christianity. Related to meditation, nirvana, Zen. I think a few of these concepts work with my non denominational Christian upbringing. De 2017, todavía explorando. Explorar como puedo combinar budismo y cristianismo. Relacionado a meditación, nirvana, Zen. Creo que algunos de estos conceptos va bien con ser non denominacional. 
  12. I read 197 books in 2019. This year, my Goodreads challenge will be lowered to 101. I didn’t get any Dickens in this year, so I must change that. I also will read one new Unamuno, Hardy, and Shakespeare. Leí 197 libros en 2019.  Este año, el reto de Goodreads solo será 101 libros. No tenía tiempo para Dickens, y llevo años ahora sin leerlo. También leeré un nuevo Unamuno, Hardy,  Shakespeare.
  13. Keep a daily journal. Journaling helps (From 2018). Escribir en un diario todos los días. Tener un diario me ayuda. (De 2018)
  14. Less social media and internet, more socializing outside the computer, tablet and mobile. Menos redes sociales e internet, más socializar fuera el ordenador, tablet y móvil. 
  15. Make 2020 a memorable year. Hacer 2020 un año memorable.
