Ventura Pons is a Catalán director. Born in 1945, Pons has made a name for himself in Catalán cinema. He was described to me as the Catalán “Almodóvar”. His films, however, differ greatly from the manchego great, in my opinion. Ventura Pons es un director catalán. Nació en 1945 y es conocido en el mundo de cine catalán. Alguien me lo describió como el “Almodóvar catalán”. Sin embargo, en mi opinón, sus películas son bastante diferentes del genio manchego. 

Unfortunely, I have never been able to find the majority of his films, even when I was in València (let’s not get into the whole Catalán-Valenciano debate here, nor if Catalunya is “Spain”). As I’m investigating possible ideas for my master’s thesis, his works keep coming up. Lucky for me, two of his films are available on Amazon. If only more were. Lamentablemente, nunca he podido encontrar la mayoría de sus películas, incluso cuando estaba en València (no vamos a entrar el debate catalán-valenciano ni si Catalunya es España o no). Durante mi investigación para generar ideas para la tesis del máster, siempre leo cosas sobre sus películas. Con un poco de suerte, he encontrado dos en Amazon. Ojala estuvieran más. 

Food of Love (2002) tells the story of an American teenager who has just graduated from high school. One night, Paul Porterfield (Kevin Bishop) receives the opportunity to turn pages for piano legend Richard Kennington (Paul Rhys). Later, on a trip to Barcelona with his mother, Pamela (Juliet Stevenson), he crosses paths with the pianist. Paul finds a way to sneak out to spend a night of passion with Kennington and the two start a torrid affair. Of course, not all is as it seems, and the film focuses on the relationship between mother and son, son and piano legend, and piano legend and mother. Manjar de amor (2002) es la historia de un adolescente estadounidense quien acaba de terminar sus estudios en secundaria. Una noche, Paul Porterfield (Kevin Bishop) recibe la oportunidad para cambiar páginas para el leyenda del piano, Richard Kennington (Paul Rhys). Después, durante un viaje a Barcelona con su madre, Pamela (Juliet Stevenson), cruza con el pianista. Luego, Paul se escabuille de su madre para pasar una noche de pasión con Kennington, y empiezan un romance ardiente. Desde luego, no todo es lo que parece, y la película enfoca en la relación entre madre e hijo, hijo y pianista, y pianista y madre. 

The movie doesn’t have a high rating on IMDB, 5.7. While I agree a lot was lost in translation as Pons normally works in Catalán, not English, the movie deserves a higher rating. The flick has a theatrical quality, much like Pons’ 1999 Amic/Amat, which was based on the play Testament, which I read for my Incendiary Spanish Lit class. The leads were played by British actors, and they slipped in and out of American accents. La peli no ha recibido buenas críticas del público de IMDB, con solo un 5,7 de 10. Estoy de acuerdo que hay algo perdido en traducción, como Pons suele trabajar en catalán, no inglés, pero creo que la peli merece mejores críticas. Hay una calidad teatral de la peli, como su peli de 1999, Amic/Amat, basada en la obra de teatro Testament, que leí para mi clase de literatura española incendiaria. Los actores eran ingleses, no americanos, y a veces escuché su acento inglés. 

One thing that English-speaking audiences may not pick up on is the satire of the typical tourist in Barcelona. Pamela is a fish out of water in the Catalán capital. Una cosa que el público angloparlante no necesariamente deduce es la satira del turista típica guiri en Barcelona. Pamela es un “pez fuera de agua” en la capital catalana. 

The film also is very early 2000s in regard to reactions of homosexual male representation. It shows how far the US and Spain have come this century. También, se nota la peli es de los primeros años de los 2000s con las reacciones y la representación al varón homoxual. Está bien porque muestra como hemos avanzado este siglo en los EE.UU y España. 

While not as good as Amic/Amat, the film is a good introduction to the world of Pons for those previously uninitiated. Aunque no es tan buena como Amic/Amat, la película sirve con una buena introducción al mundo de Pons para los que no lo conocían antes.
