Located just outside Colorado Springs, Colarado, the Garden of the Gods National Natural Landmark (since 1971) is a must-see stop for visitors to the Centennial State. It’s filled with beautiful rock formations with options for driving and hiking. According to Wikipedia, Europeans first called the park Red Rock Corral. A conversation between two surveyors changed the name. One said it would a “capital place for a beer garden” and the other said that “it is a place fit for the Gods to assemble.” Situado justo afuera de Colorado Springs, Colorado, el Jardín de los Dioses Parque Natural (desde 1971) es una parada imprescindible para los visitantes al Estado Centenario. Hay muchas formaciones de roca preciosas con opciones para conducir y caminar. Según Wikipedia, los europeos lo llamaron “Coral de Rocas Rojas”, pero una conversación entre dos agrimensores cambió el nombre. Uno dijo que sería “un sitio capital para un jardín de cerveza” y el otro dijo “Es un buen sitio donde los Dios podrían reunirse.”
Monday morning, my boyfriend and I woke up early to try to beat the crowds. We got some information about the trail we wanted to take from the nearby visitor centre, then went to a closer parking lot. I first got turned around, but it gave us an opportunity to see three deer. I figured out the map, and we got going on a three-mile loop that goes through some of the most spectacular rock formations and views of the park. El lunes por la mañana, mi chico y yo nos despertamos pronto para llegar antes de las multitudes. Fuimos al centro de visitantes para conseguir más información sobre la ruta que queremos hacer, y después nos acercamos a otro aparcamiento. Me perdí al principio, pero mi error nos daba la oportunidad para ver tres ciervos. Nos ubiqué en el mapa, y empezamos una ruta circular de 4,8 kilómetros que pasa unas formaciones de roca espectaculares y vistas bonitas del parque.
All the hiking in Spain and on the Camino came back to me in the form of muscle memory, and I felt energized by nature. My boyfriend figured out that Cross-Fit doesn’t prepare one for hikes in the summer mountain heat. We still had fun and enjoyed the incredible views of the formations. The trail we took wasn’t crowded at all, but it did go past some crowded parts which are considered highlights of the park. Mis músculos se acordaban de todo el senderismo que hice en España y el Camino, y la naturaleza me animó muchísimo, mientras mi chico se dio cuenta que Cross-Fit no sirve como preparación para rutas montañosas en el calor de verano. Todavía lo pasamos bien y disfrutamos de las vistas increíbles de las formaciones. No había mucha gente en la ruta en sí, pero pasaba sitios donde sí, había muchas personas, como son las zonas más populares del parque.
The rocks were part of a geographical upheaval on a natural fault line millions of years ago. Las rocas formaban parte de una turbulencia de geografía en una falla hace unos millones de años.
Afterward, we stopped at the Trading Post for some souvenirs before heading to Manitou Springs and the Cliff Dwellings (an upcoming entry) before heading on to Denver to beat the rush hour traffic. Después, paramos en el Trading Post para comprar regalos antes de ir a Manitou Springs y las moradas de acantilados (una entrada para el futuro) antes de ir a Denver para estar antes del tráfico.

Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs
Located in the North Cheyenne Cañon Park near Colorado Springs, Helen Hunt Falls is a short, steep hike that offers spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains. They are 11 metres or 35 feet high and are a popular tourist destination. The falls are named for Helen Maria Hunt Jackson (not the Oscar-winning actress. Did you know there’s a Mad About You revival coming?), a poet and writer who was an activist for Native Americans. Situado en el Parque North Cheyenne Cañon cerca de Colorado Springs, Helen Hunt Falls (Cascadas) es una ruta cortita pero con bastante pendiente que ofrece vistas espectaculares de las montañas rocosas. Tienen un altitud de 11 metros. Es un destino popular, y la escritora, poeta y activista para los indígenas Helen Maria Hunt Jackson da nombre a las cascadas y no la actriz quien ganó un Oscar (¿sabías que va a ser un nuevo Loco por ti?). 
Located 7.2 km/4.5 miles from Colorado Springs, the North Cheyenne Cañon Park is on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to 56 miles (around 90 km) of trails. Our goal was to see the falls. We had to park a little bit away from the visitor centre and falls, as it’s a popular site. By the time we arrived to the visitor centre, it was closed since it was just 5 P.M. Ah well. Ubicado a 7,2 km de Colorado Springs, el Parque Norte Cheyenne Cañón está en el Registro Nacional de Sitios Históricos y hay unos 90 kilometros de senderos dentro del parque. Nuestro próposito era ver las cascadas. Tuvimos que aparcar algo lejos del Centro de Visitantes, como es un lugar popular de turistas. Cuando llegamos al Centro de Visitantes, ya estaba cerrado porque eran las 17.00. Pero bueno. 
The falls themselves are visible from this point as they are right next to the Visitor’s Centre, but there is a short .7 mile (1.13 km) hike that goes up a moderately steep trail to another fall that offers views. We weren’t the only ones doing this trail, and it wasn’t too difficult at all. The views were well worth the effort. Se puede ver las cascadas porque están a lado del Centro de Visitantes, pero hay una ruta cortita de 1,13 kilómetros que sube por una sendero con bastante pendiente a otra cascada con muchas vistas preciosas. No estabamos solos, y no era muy difícil. 
Before the torrential rain, we did happen to see an elk (wapiti for the UK-Irish folks). Antes de la dilluvia, tuvimos suerte y vimos un uapití/ciervo canadiense.
I’d been to St. Louis two times prior, and neither time gave me the opportunity to go up the Gateway Arch. The first time was because Bill Clinton was there for a campaign stop in 1992, and the second time was because I was there for a New Found Glory concert in 2003. I always regretted not having the chance to go up the Gateway to the West. Había viajado a San Luis dos veces en el pasado, y ningún viaje me dio la oportunidad para subir el Arco Gateway (la Puerta al Oeste). La primera vez era porque Bill Clinton estaba allí durante su primera campaña electoral en 1992, y la segunda vez era porque solo fui para asisitir a un concierto de New Found Glory en 2003. The city is located on the Mississippi River, which, due to all the rain this spring and early summer in the midwest, was pretty high. The Arch is right on the river and was built in the 1960s to commemorate the westward expansion of the U.S. (I’ll refrain from commentary there.) It’s the tallest arch in the world at 192 metres/630 feet. La ciudad está situado en el Río Mississippi. Ahora mismo, dado a toda la lluvia durante la primavera y verano hasta ahora en el Medio Oeste, había más agua que lo normal. El Arco está ubicado en el río. Fue construido en los años 1960s para conmemorar la expansón al oeste de los EEUU (sin comentario). Es el arco más grande del mundo con 192 metros de altura.
We arrived to St. Louis around 5 p.m. on Friday to cloudy skies and drizzle. We rested a bit before going out to a “tapas” restaurant, Barcelona Tapas. Located in the suburb of Clayton (which was a much nicer area than our airport-proximity hotel I might add), Barcelona Tapas attempts to serve Spanish tapas, but they were way too expensive to be tapas (tapas are free) or even pintxos. It made me miss Spain, but at least they had a relaxing café con leche after the meal. Llegamos a San Luis sobre las 5 de la tarde de viernes. Era un día gris, nublado y con sirimiri/calabobas, como si estuviera en el norte de la península ibérica. Descansamos un rato antes de ir a un restaurante de “tapas”, el Barcelona Tapas. Está ubicado en el suburbio de Clayton, un área más bonita de la zona del aeropuerto donde estaba nuestro hotel. Barcelona Tapas pretende servir tapas españolas, pero eran demasiadas caras para ser tapas (tapas son gratís chavales) o incluso pintxos. Echaba de menos España, aún más cuando me tomé un relaxing café con leche después de la cena. 
Saturday morning we woke too early. As it was 6 July, the annual St. Louis Independence Day celebration was still going on, so we had to pass two security checkpoints before going up the arch. Our tickets were for 8:20, and we went straight to the line. El sábado, nos despertamos demasiado pronto. Como era el seis de julio, estabamos durante la celebración de San Luis para el día de Independencía de EE.UU. Tuvimos que pasar por dos puntos de seguridad antes de subir el arco. Nuestras entradas eran para las 8.20, y fuimos directo a la cola de espera. 
Unfortunately, due to all the moisture in the air, the windows had heavy condensation and visibility was low. It was still an experience that I’m glad I finally got to cross off that Bucket List. Por desgracía, dado a toda la humedad en el aire, había mucha condensación y no había mucha visibilidad. Todavía era una experencía que me alegro mucho haber vivido.

I went to visit my mom recently, who now lives on the outskirts of Louisville. She was desperate for a day trip anywhere, and I was curious about the Falls of the Ohio as I pass the exit every visit. It’s located about 40 minutes from where my mom lives, and we drove across the new I-65 toll bridge, which, from what I can tell, is a thorn in Louisville’s side. Unless you cross it x times in a month, you will not be billed. We got lost in Jeffersonville, but that gave us the opportunity to see some beautiful views of the Ohio. Está ubicado a unos 40 minutos de la casa de mi madre. Tomamos el puente nuevo de I-65, que es de peaje, y ha causado muchos problemas. Si no lo cruces x veces al mes, no te cobran el peaje. Nos perdimos en Jeffersonville, pero nos daba la oportunidad de ver unas vistas bonitas del Ohio.
We drove on to the State Park and enjoyed the views of the rapids before continuing on the Ohio River Scenic Loop. We found the George Rogers Clark cabin and walked around. Clark gives Clarksville, population 21,920, its name and was the older brother of William Clark, of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Seguimos hasta el Parque Estatal y disfrutamos de las vistas de los rápidos antes de continuar en ruta escénica del Río Ohio. Encontramos la cabaña de George Rogers Clark. Clark da nombre a Clarksville, población 21.920, y fue el hermano mayor de William Clark, conocido por la expecidión de Lewis y Clark. 
We drove through New Albany to get to I-64 for our next destination. I pass Corydon when I take the 
I stopped at the visitor’s centre to find out information, and then walked around downtown. The main attraction is the first State Capitol, which dominates downtown. It’s located in an old-fashioned plaza in the heart of the town. Fui a la oficina de turismo para obtener más información, y después exploré el centro del pueblo. Of course, I visited the Kent Java Bar, which is a decent coffee shop, even if on the expensive side. I also went into the pharmacy/chemists called “Butt Drugs”, because with a name like that, how can you not? To answer your question, it is a family name. They still have an old-fashioned soda fountain and ice cream sundaes and the like. Desde luego, visité el Kent Java Bar, que es un café decente aunque un poco caro. También fui a la farmacia conocida como “Butt Drugs” (drogas de culo), porque con un nombre así, ¿cómo se puede resistir una visita? Before leaving, we stopped at the Battle of Corydon Memorial Park, where there was another cabin. If I had more time, and if it weren’t so hot, I would have explored the nearby trails. Antes de marcharnos, paramos en el Parque Memorial de la Batalla de Corydon, donde había otra cabaña. Si tuviera más tiempo, y si no hiciera tanto calor, habría explorado las sendas de la zona.
