Three Dunes Challenge.

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten any hiking in, and I was itching to reconnect with nature. Unfortunately, the Midwest doesn’t have many mountains, and it is rainier than the rainy season in the Basque Country at the moment. Hace bastante tiempo de mi último ruta de senderismo, y tenía mono de conectar con la naturaleza de nuevo. Lamentablemente, el Medio Oeste falta montañas, y este verano llueve más que la temporada de lluvia en Euskadi. 

However, my boyfriend and I lucked out that a sunny day coincided with his Friday off, and we decided to go to the Indiana Dunes State Park on Lake Michigan in Indiana to tackle the “3 Dunes Challenge.” Sin embargo, mi chico y yo tenía suerte porque coincidió un día asoleado con un viernes libre que él tenía. Decidimos ir al Parque Estatal Indiana Dunes (Dunas) en el Lago Michigan para conquistar el “Desafío de Tres Dunas.” 

Indiana Dunes is divided into a National Park and a State Park. Until Feb. 2019, it was a National Lakeshore, but is now a National Park. The Three Dunes Challenge is located in the State Park. It involves climbing the three highest dunes, a “552 vertical feet” (or 168 metres) hike over 2.4 km/1.5 miles. Hay dos parques de Indiana Dunes, un parque nacional y un parque estatal. Hasta el febrero de 2019, era un “National Lakeshore” (orilla de lago nacional), pero ahora es un parque nacional. El Desafío de Tres Dunas está situado en el parque estatal. Involucra subir las tres dunas más altas, una desnivel de 168 metros “verticales” con una distancia de 2,4 kilómetros. 

We left around 8ish and arrived around 11. I-94 had some pretty bad traffic on the outskirts of Chicago. There was only one car in front of us at the park entrance, but when we left, there was a long line of cars waiting to get into the seashore. Salimos de Chambana sobre las 8 y llegamos sobre las 11. We parked at the Nature Centre and got a map of the trails. The challenge goes along route number 8 and is clearly marked with “3 Dunes Challenge” throughout the trail. Aparcamos el coche en el Centro de Naturaleza y nos dieron un mapa de los senderos. El desafío sigue la ruta 8 y hay muchas señales de “3 Dunes Challenges” en la ruta. 

The first dune was the steepest. It was pretty sandy too. The views of Lake Michigan from Mt. Jackson, 176 feet/53 metres tall, were incredible. La primera duna tenía más pendiente que las otras. También tenía mucha arena. Las vistas de Lago Michigan desde Monte Jackson, con 53 metros de altura, eran increíbles. 

The second dune, Mt. Holden, was higher at 184 feet/56 metres, but it didn’t have much of an incline. The third and final dune, the highest, Mt. Tom, is 192 feet/58 metres tall, and instead of hiking through the sand, we had to climb a set of stairs to the top. La segunda duna, Monte Holden, era más alto con 56 metros de altura, pero no tenía tanto pendiente. La tercera y última duna, la más alta, Monte Tom, tenía 58 metros de altura. En lugar de subir en tierra de arena, había unas escaleras para subir hasta el cima. 

To get back to the Nature Centre, you can take a shortcut back (trail 4) from Mt. Tom, or you can take the long way around the beach. We decided that it was a place we wanted to return to, so we would save the long way around the beach for our next visit and took trail 4 to trail 7 back to the Nature Centre. Para volver al Centro de Naturaleza, hay dos opciones. Hay un atajo (Sendero 4) desde Monte Tom, o puedes volver por la playa. Decidimos que era un sitio adonde queremos volver, y la próxima vez tomaremos la ruta más larga. Tomamos el sendero 4 hasta el sender 7 para volver. 

We drove around the park a bit more and then went to the National Park Visitor Centre to buy t-shirts and pick up free stickers as we had completed the challenge. Vimos más del parque desde el coche y después fuimos al Centro de Visitantes para comprar camisetas y recoger pegatinas gratis que dan a las personas que hacen el desafío. 

I will remark that for neither my boyfriend, who does CrossFit four times a week, and for me, who has hiked over 1000 kilometres on the Camino de Santiago and much more over Spain, it wasn’t very challenging. That isn’t to say we didn’t break a sweat. However, it could present a challenge for those who aren’t used to hiking. Quería comentar que para nosotros, no lo encontramos muy difícil. Mi chico hace CrossFit cuatro veces la semana, y yo he hecho más de 1000 kilómetros del Camino de Santiago y he caminado mucho más de España. No quiero decir que no sudamos. Puede presentar dificultades para los que no están acostumbrados a senderismo o hacer ejercicio. 

We later visited Valparaiso, Indiana for lunch and to stop at an interesting café, Fluid CoffeeBar, before heading home, avoiding I-94 and taking US Route 30 back to I-57 in Illinois and onto Chambana. Después, visitamos el pueblo de Valparaiso, Indiana, para comer y parar en un café interesante, Fluid CoffeeBar, antes de volver. Evitamos el I-94 y cogemos la Ruta 30 hasta el I-57 en Illinois para llegar a Chambana. 

If you’re interested in tackling the challenge, please note there is a $7 entry fee for Indiana residents and $12 for non-Indiana residents. Si estás interesado en hacer el desafío, deberías saber que hay que pagar para entrar. Destination: Milwaukee

Milwaukee is a vibrant city of with an estimated population of 595,351 in a metropolitan area of over 2 million people. It’s a short drive from the state capital, Madison. Located on Lake Michigan about two hours north of Chicago, the city dates back to 1846. In addition to the lake, the Milwaukee River runs through downtown. Milwaukee es una ciudad vibrante con una población de 595.351 personas con una población de más de 2 millones de personas en la área metropolitana. No está lejos de la capital del estado, Madison, y está ubicado en Lago Michigan a unos 2 horas al norte de Chicago. Fue fundida en el año 1846. En adición al lago, el Río Milwaukee fluye por el centro de la ciudad. 

My boyfriend and I arrived to Milwaukee around 4. We checked into our hotel, Home 2, and rested a bit before finding a coffee house so I could get some classwork done. This is typical of a graduate student life. The work never ends. However, by getting some research out of the way, I had Sunday and Monday morning freer to explore the city during the day. Mi chico y yo llegamos a Milwaukee sobre las 16. Hicimos check-in en el hotel, Home 2, y descansamos un rato antes de buscar un café porque quería trabajar un poco. Es típico de la vida de un “grad student”. Siempre hay trabajo. Sin embargo, para hacer mi investigación el sábado por la tarde, tenía domingo y lunes más libre para explorar la ciudad durante el día. 

The coffee house we stopped at was part of the Colectivo Coffee Roasters chain located in Milwaukee. There are 21 locations in Milwaukee and Madison. I ended up getting a cute t-shirt of a dog with the word “coffee”, which is totally me as I love dogs and coffee. Fuimos a un café de la cadena de Milwaukee, Colectivo Coffee Roasters. Hay 21 locales en Milwaukee y Madison. Me compré una camiseta guapa de un perro con la palabra “coffee” (café en inglés), que encaja genial conmigo porque me encantan los perros y el café. 

We stopped at a local pizza place whose name I don’t wish to recall because it was that bad. Screaming children and a long wait for a mediocre pizza. Cenamos en una pizzeria local cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme porque era tan mal. Había niños chillando y una espera larga para una pizza mediocre. 

Sunday morning was bright and sunny, however, and after breakfast at the hotel, we went to the Milwaukee Public Market. While not quite as nice as Seattle’s Pike Place Market (and honestly, what market is?), it was a quaint market. I found some Spanish wine for only $10. How I miss my Rioja! Nos despartamos domingo a un día asoleado. Después de desayunar en el hotel, fuimos a Milwaukee Public Market (mercado público). Aunque no es tan bueno como el mercado de Seattle, Pike Place Market (y creo que no existe un mercado tan bueno como ese), era un mercado pintoresco. Encontré una botella de Rioja por solo $10. ¡Como echo de menos Rioja! 

Next we walked along the river despite the cold (It was about -2C/upper 20sF) to the Bronze Fonz. The statue of the Happy Days character is famous and was dressed for St. Patrick’s Day. Luego, paseamos por el río a pesar del frío (hizo unos 2 grados bajo cero) hasta la estatua del Bronze Fronze. Es del personaje de Días felices y era vestido para el día de San Patricio. 

We went up to the North Point Lighthouse and walked around some more, enjoying the views of Lake Michigan. Después, condujimos al Faro de North Point (Punto norte) y caminamos más, disfrutando de las vistas de Lago Michigan. 

After lunch at a local kebab (apparently they’re giros in the US? To me, they’ll always be kebabs!), we went to the hotel for siesta. I’m slowly bringing back proper Spanish customs to the US. Después de comer en un kebab local, volvimos al hotel para echarnos una siesta. Poco a poco, estoy llevando la cultura español a los EEUU. 

Post siesta, we drove up to Port Washington. I was a fan of Step by Step as a child, and I was curious about the town of 11,250 residents. It has a beautiful downtown area, and we ended up having a great dinner at the local Italian restaurant, The Pasta Shoppe. Después de la siesta, fuimos a Port Washington. Como joven, era un fan de Paso a Paso, y tenía curiosidad del pueblo de 11.250 habitantes. El centro es precioso, y fuimos a cenar en el restaurante The Pasta Shoppe. Allí, se come muy bien. 

I woke up Monday morning to realise I had left my scarf and Barcelona jacket at the restaurant. I had bought the scarf my first winter in Spain, so it had meaning for me, and the Barcelona jacket I was wearing under my heavier winter coat for extra warmth was a brand new Christmas present. The restaurant didn’t open until 16, so we visited the St. Josaphat Basilica before exploring the Third Ward and Bay View neighbourhoods. Me desperté el lunes para darme cuenta que había dejado mi bufanda y chaqueta de Barcelona en el restaurante. Compré la bufanda durante mi primer invierno en España, y para mi, es especial. La chaqueta del Barça que llevaba abajo mi abrigo para más calor era nuevo, un regalo de Navidad. El restaurante no abre hasta las 16, entonces, visitamos la Basilica St. Josaphat antes de explorar los barrios del Third Ward y Bay View. 

After heading back up to Port Washington to retrieve my left items, we drove back to Urbana, tired but great after our first weekend getaway together. Después de recoger mis objetos perdidos en Port Washington, volvimos a Urbana, cansados pero bien después de nuestra primera excursión de fin de semana juntos.

Madison, Wisconsin.

Spring break, 2019. Vacaciones de primavera de 2019. 

I wanted to do something, but being a grad student, I don’t have a lot of money. Most places I wanted to go to aren’t great winter places (it was still technically winter) due to snow and such. I realised I had only been through Wisconsin once as a young child and barely remembered it. I told my boyfriend I was thinking about it, and he said he could take a day off from work and make a long weekend of it. Quería hacer algo, pero como soy estudiante de graduado, no disponía de mucho dinero. La mayoría de sitios adonde quiero ir están en el norte donde había bastante nieve y tal aún en marzo. Me di cuenta que solo conocía Wisconsin de pasó cuando tenía 7 años y no lo recordaba bien. Le dije a mi chico que estaba pensándolo, y me dijo que podía pedir un día libre de trabajo y ir conmigo para un fin de semana largo. 

We settled on Madison and Milwaukee. Decidimos en Madison y Milwaukee. 

On Friday afternoon, we drove up to Madison, Wisconsin. Madison is the capital of Wisconsin and has a population of 258, 054. The drive took about four hours. Illinois does not have beautiful scenery, needless to say. Viernes por la tarde, conducimos a Madison, Wisconsin. Madison es la capital del estado y tiene una población de 258,054. Tardamos unas cuatro horas en llegar. Illinois no es conocido por su paisaje interesante, he de decir. 

We avoided the toll road near Rockford, Ill., and I found myself on US Route 20, the road that goes by my childhood home. We eventually took a road north and found ourselves crossing the Wisconsin state line around sunset. Evitamos los peajes de la autopista cerca de Rockford, Ill., y me encontré en la Ruta Nacional 20, que es la misma carretera que pasa la casa de mi juventud. Eventualmente tomamos una carretera hacía el norte y cruzamos la frontera entre Illinois y Wisconsin al atardecer. 

We arrived to Madison around 20.00 and checked into our hotel, a Tru by Hilton that reminded me of Europe’s Ibis Hotels. We went in search for a place to eat, but the Mediterranean restaurant had either closed or never existed. Google Maps isn’t always accurate. So we settled on Chile’s, a restaurant I hadn’t been to in about 13 years. It was good as I remembered. Llegamos a Madison sobre las 20.00 y hicimos check-in en el hotel, Tru by Hilton. Me acordaba de los Hotel Ibis en Europa. Buscamos un restaurante para cenar. O estaba cerrado o Google Maps nos mentió, pero no encontramos el restaurante mediterraneo. Entonces, fuimos a Chile’s, un restaurante donde no había comida desde hace unos 13 años. Estaba tan bueno como lo recordaba. 

Saturday we woke up and explored the University of Wisconsin-Madison. While I loved the views of one of Madison’s lakes from the campus, I prefer my current grad school home of UIUC. We then walked toward the capitol building and visited it. El sábado nos despertamos y fuimos a explorar la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison. Aunque me gustaban las vistas de uno de los lagos de Madison desde la universidad, prefiero donde estudio ahora, la UIUC. 

The Wisconsin State Capitol was completed in 1917 and is the fifth building to house the WI government. Terminaron el Capitolio actual de Wisconsin en 1917 y es el quinto edificio para servir como sede el gobierno de Wisconsin. 

Later, we visited a few of the shops on the street connecting the capitol building to the university and stopped at an Espresso Royale so I could work on some stuff for class. Después, visitamos unas tiendas en la calle entre el capitolio y la universidad y paramos en Espresso Royale porque tenía deberes de mis clases. 

Later, we drove through the city and ended up at Half Price Books before having a late lunch at Potbelly, a sub sandwich chain, and taking off to Milwaukee. Después, exploramos la ciudad en coche y fuimos a Half Price Books antes de comer en Potbelly (una cadena de bocadillos) y marcharnos para Milwaukee.

Will it play in Peoria?

Peoria has been on my radar since I was in elementary school, as they had some minor league hockey team that played Cleveland’s minor league hockey team. As I don’t care about hockey (sorry to my Canadian readers), I spent more time reading the program about different teams than watching the game. I had never heard of this Illinois city. Peoria me ha interesado desde que estaba en primaría. Tenía un equipo de hockey de tercera división que jugaba contra el equipo de Cleveland. Como no me gusta el hockey (pido perdón de mis lectores de Canadá), pasé el tiempo leyendo el programa de los equipos diferentes en lugar de ver el partido. Nunca había escuchado hablar de esta ciudad de Illinois. 

Over the years, I’ve heard a lot of talk about Peoria and had a negative stereotype of it as it being industrial. The expression “Will it play in Peoria?” comes from their ability to represent the midwest values. (Fun fact. Hillary Clinton won Peoria County in 2016.) I still was curious, and I’ve been meaning to visit the largest city on the Illinois River ever since arriving in Illinois last summer. Durante los años, siempre escuché a las personas hablar mal de Peoria. Hay una expresión en inglés estadounidense, “Will it play in Peoria?” (¿Será popular en Peoria?) porque es representativo de los valores del mediooeste. (Trivia: Hillary Clinton ganó el Condado de Peoria en 2016.) Todavía tenía una curiosidad, y he querido visitar la ciudad más grande del Río Illinois desde mi llegada a Illinois el verano pasado. 

Peoria is the oldest European settlement in the state of Illinois. French explorer Henri de Tonti established it in 1691, and it is named for the Peoria tribe. Today it’s a city of 115,007 people and the seventh largest city in the state. It’s located about 2 hours southwest of Chicago and 90 minutes northwest of Champaign-Urbana. Peoria es la población europea en el estado de Illinois. El explorador francés Henri de Tonti lo fundió en 1691, y la tribú Peoria da nombre a la ciudad. Hoy en día tiene una población de 115.007 personas y es la septima ciudad del estado. Está ubicado a unos dos horas al suroeste de Chicago y 90 minutos al noroeste de Champaign-Urbana. 

On the last Friday of May, my boyfriend and I took off to explore the town. It was a quick drive up I-74. Our first stop was the Forest Park Nature Centre. We took a short walk through the forest as I’m unfortunately out of hiking practice due to a stressful semester, but my love for hiking is still there. I liked the visitor centre shaped like a tippee. El último viernes de mayo, mi chico y yo fuimos a explorar Peoria. No tardamos nada en llegar por la autovía I-74. Nuestra primera parada fue el Forest Park Nature Centre (Parque de Bosque Centro de Naturaleza, algo así, los nombres yankis pocas veces traduce bien a cristiano)  Nuestra ruta por el bosque fue cortita dado que llevo mucho tiempo sin hacer senderismo dado a un semestre agobiante. Sin embargo, todavía me encanta el senderismo. También me gustó el centro de visitantes con forma de tipi. 

We went to lunch next. I had read about a 50’s diner with the original name The 50’s Diner. It was a typical diner with decent food. Después, fuimos a comer. He leído sobre un restaurante dedicado a los años 1950 con el nombre tan original, The 50’s Diner. Era un típico restaurante de los años 50 (para los españoles, como Peggy Sue) con comida buena. 

Post lunch, we went back to walk a bit more in the forest and drive along Grandview Drive before visiting Tower Park. Theodore Roosevelt said Grandview Drive was “the most beautiful drive in America.” I say that’s a stretch, but it is definitely one of the most beautiful drives in the state. The water tower in Tower Park in Peoria Heights offers views from the top, and it’s only $2 to take a lift to the top. It’s well worth it. Después de comer, volvimos al bosque para caminar un poquito más y conducir por el Grandview Drive antes de visitar el Parque Torre. Theodore Roosevelt dijo que Grandview Drive era “el paseo de coche más bonita en América.” Creo que no tiene razón, pero sí, es uno de los paseos de coche más bonitos en el estado. El torre de agua en Parque Torre en Peoria Heights tiene un mirador arriba, y solo cuesta $2 para ir arriba en un ascensor. 

We stopped at a quaint bookshop near the park, and as I needed my coffee house time, stopped at Leaves n Beans Coffee House. Fuimos a una librería cerca del parque, y después, como siempre me apetece tomar un café, fuimos a Leaves n Beans Coffee House (Café de Ojas y Alubias en español peninsular). 

Most of what we saw was in the suburb of Peoria Heights, but we did drive through the rest of the city and found it to be surprising. Peoria is definitely worth visiting to find out what plays there today. Aunque la mayoría de lo que vimos estaba en el suburbio de Peoria Heights, condujimos por la ciudad y nos soprendió. Peoria vale la pena para ver que es popular allí hoy en día.
