In 2005, Spanish author Javier Cercas published his successful novel, La Velocidad de la luz, which he based on experiences he had during his time as an instructor at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. En el año 2005, escritor español Javier Cercas publicó su novela exitosa La velocidad de la luz, basada en sus experiencias durante su tiempo como instructor en la Universidad de Illinois Urbana-Champaign. 

I remember seeing the English translation at Valencia’s library and passing it by because I wanted to read the original version, as so much is lost in translation. I never could find it in Spanish though. Recuerdo ver la traducción al inglés en la biblioteca de València y nunca la cogí porque quería leerla en VOS, como siempre pierde mucho en la traducción. Nunca pudé encontrarla en español por alguna razón. 

Earlier this semester, for a class on empathy in Spanish narrative, we read a selection of his 2014 novel, El Impostor, which is on my never-ending to-read list. I then realised that he had 1. worked at my University for two years and 2. wrote a novel about his experiences. Cercas normally writes meta-fiction where a version of himself is the protagonist. Este semestre, para una clase sobre la empatía en narrativa peninsular (de España), leemos unas selecciones de su novela de 2014, El Impostor, que ya está en la lista de libros que quiero leer, que no tiene fin. Me di cuenta en este momento que 1. Cercas trabajó en mi universidad durante dos años y 2. escribió una novela sobre sus experencias. Cercas suele escribir “meta-ficción” con una protagonista que es una versión de él. 

As soon as the semester ended and I had free time, I read La velocidad de la luz and enjoyed it. He talked about real places in Urbana during the 1980s. The Courier Café still exists in downtown Urbana, and the Foreign Language Building where he worked is the same building I spend most of my time in. Unfortunately, the gay bar Chester Street closed before my arrival. Not that I tend to go to any bar much, but I’m always sad to see places with history close down. Cuando el semestre terminó y disponía de tiempo libre otra vez, me leí La velocidad de la luz y me gustó mucho. Habló de lugares reales en Urbana durante los años 1980. The Courier Café sigue operando en el centro de Urbana, y el Foreign Languages Building (edificio de idiomas extranjeros) es el mismo edificio donde paso mucho tiempo. Lamentablemente, el bar gay Chester Street se cerró para siempre antes de mi llegada. Aunque no suelo ir a ningún bar, siempre me da pena ver sitios con historia cerrarse. 

It’s curious as he never mentions Champaign, which is the bigger of the twin cities, despite its origins as the “wrong side of the tracks” and the university being located mostly in Urbana. Es curioso que nunca menciona Champiagn, que es la ciudad más grande de Champaign-Urbana. Champaign es más grande a pesar de ser del mal lado de los carriles de trenes y la universidad está ubicada en Urbana. 

The book details his friendship with a Vietnam veteran, Rodney Falk, who was a bit off and the tragedies of both of their lives.  He visits Rantoul, where  Falk lived with his father to find out more about Falk’s mysterious disappearance. El libro detalla su amistad con un veterano de Vietnam, Rodney Falk, quien es un poco excéntrico y también las tragedias de la vida de ambos. Visita Rantoul, donde Falk vive con su padre para saber más de la desaparición misteriosa de Falk. 

Rantoul is a city of around 13,000 residents located about 17 km/11 miles north of Urbana. There isn’t much to see there besides a Wal-Mart and typical midwestern small town sites. I went to explore it one afternoon and although I never found the pub he stopped at, I did find the Casey’s General Store he stopped at. Casey’s General Store is a Midwestern chain of gas and convenience stores. Rantoul es una ciudad de unos 13.000 habitantes situado a unos 17 kilómetros al norte de Urbana. No hay mucho que ver, solo la gran almacen Wal-Mart y más sitios típicos de los pueblos del mediooeste. Fui a explorarlo una tarde y, aunque nunca encontré el bar donde paraba el protagonista, sí, encontré el Casey’s General Store donde fue. Casey’s General Store es una cadena del mediooeste de gasolineras. 

I recommend the novel, but I must admit, I might have enjoyed it more as it was a bridge between my two worlds, Spain and academic Chambana. Os recomiendo la novela, pero he de decir que quizás me gustara más porque sirve como un puente de mis dos mundos, España y la Chambana académica.
