During my time in Spain, it never failed that my students would ask me where was Springfield.  They were amazed when I said there were 33 populated areas named Springfield in 25 states, and that’s why The Simpsons used the name. Springfield could be anywhere USA, although we now know that Springfield, Oregon, is the Springfield on the show. Durante mi estancia en España, mis alumnos siempre me preguntaban donde estaba Springfield. Se alucionaron cuando les expliqué que hay 33 zonas pobladas con el nombre de “Springfield” en 25 estados, y es por eso que Los Simpson se usa el nombre “Springfield”. Puede ser cualquier sitio en los EEUU, aunque ahora sabemos que el Springfield de la serie viene de Springfield, Oregon. 

Since relocating to Illinois, I’ve been curious about the state capital of Springfield, population 116,250. It’s about an hour and a half drive from Urbana, so one morning during my break, I woke up early and made the drive. I left around 8, so I arrived around 9:30 and found free street parking near downtown. Desde trasladarme a Illinois, había querido vistar a Springfield, población 116.250 y la capital del estado. Está a una hora y media desde Urbana, y una mañana durante mis vacaciones, me desperté pronto y fui. My first stop was the Capitol building. The current Capitol building was completed in 1888 and is the tallest non-skyscraper capitol in the US, even taller than the national capitol in Washington D.C at 110 metres/316 feet tall. The skyscraper capitols in Louisiana and Nebraska are taller, but whatever. La primera parada era el edificio Capitolio. Terminaron constriuir el Capitolio actual en 1888 después de 20 años de construcción y es el capitolio más alto en EEUU que no se considera un “rascocielos”. Es más alto que el Capitolio del EEUU en Washington con 110 metros de altura. Los capitolios rascocielos en Luisiana y Nebraska son más altos, pero no me importa nada.

They offer free tours, and I learned a lot about the building. The Illinois House of Representatives was getting ready to fight about some new bills, and the new governor was scheduled to take office the week following my visit. Hay guias gratis, y aprendí mucho del edificio. After my visit to the capitol, I went exploring the city by foot. I went to the Old State Capitol, which served as the government offices from 1840 to 1876. Abraham Lincoln was a state lawmaker here, and both he and Barack Obama (I MISS YOU) announced their candidacies for President here. Después de mi visita al Capitolio, fui explorando la ciudad a pie. Fui al antiguo Capitolio, que era la sede de gobierno desde 1840 hasta 1876. Abraham Linconl trabajó allí, y ambos él y Barack Obama (LE ECHO DE MENOS) anunciaron sus canditaturas de la presidencia aquí. 

I stopped at the Lincoln Library and decided not to pay for the museum that day since I’m on a grad student salary. As the Lincoln Home National Historic Site was closed due to the government shutdown, I’ll have to pay another visit to this charming city anyway. Fui a la Biblioteca Lincoln y decidí no pagar la entrada al museo dado que recibo el salario de estudiante de graduado. I stopped at an awesome coffee house, WM Van’s Coffee House, located on 7th Street, and I sat and read a while while sipping coffee, one of my favourite activities. Paré en un café DPM, WM Van’s Coffee House, ubicado en Calle Septima (jeje, traducción literal, 7th Street), y leí un rato tomando un café, una de mis actividades preferidas. 

I drove a bit south of Springfield for lunch at Motorheads, a Route 66-themed bar and restaurant. I’ve been fascinated by Route 66 since I was 10, and the historic highway passes through Springfield. Conducí a un sitio al sur de Springfield para comer. Se llamaba Motorheads y es un restaurante y bar que parece un museo de la Ruta 66. Me ha fascinado la Ruta 66 desde que tenía 10 años, y la carretera histórica pasa por Springfield. 

I stopped at a K-Mart that was going out of business. I didn’t buy anything, but I did want to remember a store from my childhood that I don’t see too often anymore. Paré en un K-Mart que estaba cerrándose para siempre. On the way back to Urbana, I stopped in the town of Decatur, population 76,111 and walked through downtown and had another coffee at Blue Brew. They had a Best Buy, and my 2006 Grand Prix is now in the 2010s with bluetooth so I can listen to my iPod while driving. Por la vuelta a Urbana, paré en la ciudad pequeña de Decatur, población 76.111, y di un paseo por el centro y tomé otro café en Blue Brew. Había un Best Buy, y ahora mi 2006 Grand Prix está en la década de los 2010s con BlueTooth y puedo escuchar a mi iPod mientras conduzco. 

Springfield is a fascinating city and a place I look forward returning too soon. Springfield es una ciudad fascinante y un sitio adonde quiero volver pronto.
