Not many people can say they’ve been to all 50 Spanish provinces. Some Spanish couldn’t even name them (the politicians have proven they can’t). Hay pocas personas que pueden decir que han pisado todas las 50 provincias españolas. Algunos españoles ni puede nombrarlas (hay evidencia que los políticos no pueden, por ejemplo). 

However, I can. Pero yo sí, puedo. 

(I’ve also been to all 50 US States plus Puerto Rico, but that’s a different story). (También he estado en todos los 50 estados de EEUU más Puerto Rico, pero es una historia diferente.) 

I knew I would get to Ourense if I ever arrived to Santiago due to proximity. And I was right. My goal was accomplished. I had stepped foot in all 50 provinces. Sabía que, dado a la proximidad, que iba a llegar a Ourense si llegaba a Santiago. Tenía razón. Logré el reto. Pisé todas las provincias españolas. 

I awoke Sunday morning feeling much better, and I walked to the train station in A Coruña a bit faster than I was walking the day before. I stopped for breakfast and to buy some water and still had about 20 minutes to kill before the train left. Me desperté domingo por la mañana, casi recuperado por completo del virus, y caminé a la estación de A Coruña más rápido que el día anterior. Desayuné y compré agua antes de llegar a la estación y todavía me quedaban 20 minutos antes de la salida del tren. 

The train journey was quick, and before I knew it, I was in Ourense. A wave of euphoria washed over me as I realised I had been to all 50 provinces. El viaje me hizo corto, y muy pronto estaba llegando en Ourense. Me sentí eufórico porque he estado en todas las provincias. 

My pensión was about 2 km from the city centre. I checked in and walked slowly in the afternoon heat, about 36ºC (96,8ºF). It took me a while to find a place to eat, but I eventually found one. La pensión estaba a 2 kilómetros del centro de la ciudad. Hice check-in y caminé lento en el calor de la tarde, sobre 36º. Me costaba encontrar un buen sitio para comer, pero al final encontré uno. 

I later explored the old town. On a hot, summer Sunday afternoon, most was closed and there wasn’t a lot to see. I enjoyed the bridges and the old buildings. Después, exploré el Casco Viejo. Un domingo de verano tan caluroso, casi todo estaba cerrado y no pude ver mucho. Disfruté ver los puentes y los edificios antiguos. 

Ourense is a city of 105,839 residents that dates back to the Romans. The Moors destroyed it, but Alfonso III of Asturias rebuilt it. Four rivers flow through the city, and it’s known for the hot springs. I regret not going to any of the hot springs, but I didn’t have much time and I was too hot to move for the most part. Ourense es una ciudad de 105.839 habitantes fundida por los romanos. Los moros lo destrozaron, pero Alfonso III de Asturias volvió a construirla. Hay cuatros ríos en la ciudad, y es conocido por las termas naturales. Lamento no haber ido a ninguna, pero no tenía mucho tiempo y tenía demasiado calor para explorar mucho. 

I watched the sunset. Not only was my Camino adventure ending, but a chapter of my life was ending. The next morning I would return to Valencia for a few days before catching a flight to the U.S. where a master and probable Ph.D in Hispanic Literature with a focus in 20th and 21st Century Peninsular Literature and Film awaits me. Vi la puesta de sol. La aventura del camino estaba acabando, y también una etapa importante de la vida. El día siguiente volví a Valéncia durante unos días antes de coger un vuelo a EEUU donde un máster y muy probable un doctorado en Literatura Hispánica con un enfoque de literatura española y cine española de Siglos XX y XII me estaba esperando. 

I’m sure it’s just a temporary break from Spain and I will be back sooner than later. However, it will never be soon enough for me. The greatest peninsula in the world is my home. Seguro que solo es una pausa temporal de España y volveré más pronto que tarde. No quiero esperar mucho. La mejor península del mundo es mi hogar.
