There is nothing like watching the sun rise above the mist of the Asturian mountains to begin your day. No hay nada como empezar el día mirando el amanecer, con el sol subiendo desde la niebla de los montes asturianos. 

I left around 6:55, eating some of my trail mix for breakfast since there was nowhere open for breakfast. I passed a cute dog who wanted to escape its fence to follow me. Salí sobre las 6.55, desayunando los frutos secos que tenía porque no había ningún sitio para desayunar.

I have to rely on my travel journal to write this, and my notes for today aren’t the best. I apologise. He de usar mi diario de viajes para escribir eso más que mi memoria, y los apuntes no son los mejores. Pido perdón. 

The first part to Grado wasn’t too difficult. It was mostly along rivers, not a lot of mud, with grey skies. I had to walk through a stream at one point. It was pretty level. I didn’t take a chance on the bar “a 200 metros” actually being open, so I continued on my way. Everything I passed was either closed or didn’t exist to begin with. It wasn’t until Grado, 16 km or so after starting, when I found something open. La primera parte hasta Grado no era muy dura. La mayoría era por ríos, no había mucho barro, y el cielo era gris. Tenía que caminar por un arroyo, y no recuerdo mucho desnivel. A las 8 de la mañana, cuando vi que había un bar a 200 metros, pensaba que no iba a estar abierto y seguí caminando. Todo lo que pasé estaba cerrado o no existía. No había nada abierto hasta que llegué a Grado, a unos 16 km de Escamplero. 

Grado, population 11, 027, is the end of the typical long first-etapa and I thought it was an interesting town. I would have enjoyed it more than Escamplero for sure. I had breakfast and felt better after the café con leche. I skipped the fountain at the end of town. Grado, población 11.027, es el final de la primera etapa típica (una etapa larga), y era un pueblo interesante. Creo que me habría gustado más que Escamplero. Desayuné y me sentí mejor después del café con leche. No bebí del fuente al final del pueblo. 

The ascent to San Juan de Villapañada wasn’t as bad as I had feared. I have to say, the San Salvador prepared me well for the Primitivo. I enjoyed the amazing views. La subida a San Juan de Villapañada no era tan dura como pensaba. He de decir que el San Salvador me preparó bien para hacer el Primitivo. 

However, the descent was a muddy mess. At least I didn’t fall again. I remember lots of views of the motorway and the descent taking forever. Pero la bajada era un desastre, lleno de barro. Al menos no me caí otra vez. Recuerdo muchas vistas de la autovía y la subida era sin fin. 

The bar in Doriga was closed. Par for the course. It was another 3 kilometres to Cornellana. El bar en Doriga estaba cerrado, desde luego con la suerte que tenía. Era tres kilómetros hasta Cornellana. 

The albergue in Cornellana was the best one I had stayed in until this point. It is in an old monastery that is beautiful, yet the rooms feel modern and clean. They also did laundry for free. El albergue en Cornellana era el mejor donde me había alojado hasta ahora. Está en un monasterio antiguo precioso, pero las habitaciones son modernas y limpias. Lavaban la ropa gratis. 

I had a menú del día in town. At the albergue, I met a Catalán peregrino who had started that morning in Oviedo and was doing 40 km days. He treated me to an Aquarius and tortilla, which I am mentioning to break down stereotypes. I also ran into the Australians, French and Italian peregrinos again. Comí un menú del día en el pueblo. En el albergue, conoci a un peregrino catalán quien empezó caminar en Oviedo la misma mañana y estaba caminando 40 kilómetros al día. Me invitó a un Aquarius y pintxo de tortilla. Lo comento para romper los estereotipos. También crucé con los peregrinos australianos, franceses y italianos otra vez. 

Cornellana has a population of 796. The San Salvador Monastery was built in the 11th century. I would love to buy the hotel and fix it up, but I feel that way about most abandoned buildings along the Camino. Cornellana tiene una población de 796. El Monasterio de San Salvador era construido en el Siglo XI. Me encantaría comprar el hotel antiguo y restaurarlo, pero digo eso sobre todos los edificios abandonados por el Camino. 

I ducked into the supermarket to buy some muffins for the morning. I slept better but not great. One never sleeps well on the Camino it seems…unless they snore. Fui al supermercado para comprar magdalenas para desayunar el día siguente. Dormí mejor pero no dormí bien. Parece que nadie duerme bien en el Camino…solo los roncadores.
