The alarm went off way too early, at 6:00 a.m. I had everything ready to go, but I wanted to go back to sleep. I managed to be out the door by 6:35. La alarma sonó demasiado pronto, a las 6 de la madrugada. Ya tenía todo preparado, pero quería quedarme en la cama. Me marché a las 6:35. 

It was my first day of the Camino San Salvador, the 123 kilometre Camino between León and Oviedo, which comes with its own “Salvadorano” certificate upon arrival in Oviedo. Era mi primer día del Camino San Salvador, el Camino de 123 kilómetros entre León y Oviedo. Tiene su propio Salvadorano certificando, que recibes cuando llegas a Oviedo. 

I was hoping to find an open bar or café, but I had been prepared, having a napolitana and cold café con leche to have on the way. Good thing too, as there was nothing between my AirBNB and where the Camino starts, near the Parador of León (Hospital San Marcos), currently under restoration (2018). Estaba esperando encontrar un bar o café que estuviera abierto, pero no había ninguno entre el AirBNB y donde el Camino empieza, a lado de Parador de León (Hospital San Marcos) que estaba en obras en 2018. Pero vine preparado. Había comprado una napolitana y un café con leche frío el día anterior. 

I had found the first few arrows when I arrived to León, so I knew how to get to the river. The Camino goes along a road, but there is an unmarked alternative that goes by the river path. It was a nice walk along the Río Bernesga. Había buscado las primeras fleches cuando llegué a León y ya sabía llegar al río. El Camino va por la carretera, pero hay una alternativa sin señales que va por la senda del río. Era un paseo agradable por el Río Bernesga. 

I arrived to Carbajal de la Legua just as the Bar Central was opening at 8:30. (It’s closed on Thursdays.) I had my tostada con tomate and café con leche and my credenciales stamped. I ran into my first peregrina, who I would later find out was from Sevilla. The San Salvador peregrinos are a small group, and there aren’t a lot of options for albergues. Llegué a Carbajal de la Legua justo como el Bar Central estaba abriendo por el día a las 8:30. (Está cerrado los jueves). Desayuné una tostada con tomate y café con leche, y me selló las credenciales. Crucé con la primera peregrina, quien después me enteré que era sevillana. Los peregrinos del San Salvador somos pocos, y no hay muchas opciones de albergues. 

The sun was out, despite the forecast rain, and I stopped to lather on the sunscreen. A cow watched me, entertained. The trail was mostly pista and offered beautiful views of the mountains I would soon be walking through in a day or two. I stopped and signed all the books. Era un día despejado, aunque daba lluvia, y paré para ponerme crema solar. Una vaca estaba vigilándome, entretenida. El Camino era mayormente pista y ofreció vistas preciosas de los montes que iba a pasar durante los próximos días. Paré para firmar todos los libros que vi. 

There is an advertised fountain, but it’s nothing great, so I could’ve taken the short shortcut. Pone que hay un fuente, pero no hay un fuente espectacular, y como iba bien de agua, el atajo habría sido la mejor opción. 

The rain started soon after some ruins, and I had to break out the poncho. My backpack was the same monster that I had last year, and by the end of the Camino I wanted to burn it. Vi algunas ruinas, y después la lluvia empezó. Tenía que ponerme la chubasquero. La mochila era el mismo monstruo del año pasado, y quería quemarla después de acabar el Camino. 

In La Seca I stopped at a bar for café, and they served a pintxo de tortilla with it. This bar is closed on Tuesdays. En La Seca, paré para tomar un café y me daba un pintxo de tortilla con el café. Este bar está cerrado los martes. 

I took the option that went along the road from Cascantes to La Robla, due to the rain (which was letting up) and one kilometre less. It was torture and ugly, complete with sights of a power plant. Elegí la opción que iba por la carreterra que iba de Cascantes a La Robla porque estaba lloviendo (aunque estaba parando) y era un kilómetro menos. Era una tortura y feo, y tenía vistas de una planta de energía nuclear. 

La Robla, population 4045, was one of the ugliest villages I’ve seen, and the albergue is on the other end of town. It’s a decent albergue though, probably the best I stayed in on the San Salvador (I missed the albergue in Bendueños, which I’ve heard good things about). La Robla, población 4045, era uno de los pueblos más feos que he visto. El albergue está ubicado en las afueras del pueblo y tenía que pasar todo el pueblo antes de llegar. Era un buen albergue, creo que la mejor albergue donde dormí en el San Salvador. (Perdí el albergue de Bendueños. Todo el mundo habla muy bien de ello.)

I had lunch for 14€ at La Olimpia, mainly because after 27 km I was too tired to move to find another place to eat. Comí un menú del día en La Olimpia, porque era el primer restaurante que vi y estaba muy cansado después de 27 kilómetros y no pude caminar más. 

The hospitalero came by about 19:00 to stamp credentials and collect money. El hospitalero vino sobre las 19.00 para sellar las credenciales y recoger dinero. 

It was a decent first day, although a rainy one. Fue un buen inicio al camino, a pesar de la lluvia.
