It was a warm Friday morning when I left València for the Camino. I had a BlaBlaCar bright and early at 8:30 to Madrid, where I had time to eat before catching a bus to Zamora. I’ll always remember where I was when Pedro Sánchez officially censured Mariano Rajoy and kicked out the most fascist Spanish Prime Minister since Franco, the actual dictator. Ya hacía algo del “caloret” valenciano cuando salí de València hacía el Camino. Tenía que coger un BlaBlaCar pronto a las 8:30 para ir a Madrid, donde tenía tiempo para comer antes de coger un autobús a Zamora. Siempre recordaré donde estaba cuando me enteré que era oficial, que Pedro Sánchez tenía éxito con su moción de censura contra Mariano Rajoy y España despidió de su líder más fascista desde Franco, quien era un dictador.

Zamora was one of the two Spanish provinces I hadn’t visited, so I made sure to stop there on the way to León, where I would begin the Camino San Salvador. My original plan was to leave on Sunday, but there was some pretty heavy rain forecast so I postponed it one day. Zamora era uno de las dos provincias españolas donde no había estado, y por eso paré allí por el Camino a León, donde iba a empezar el Camino San Salvador. El plan original era empezar el domingo, pero había predicción de lluvias fuertes en los montes y lo aplacé un día. 

I arrived to Zamora in the evening and went straight to the hotel, which was close to the bus station. It was a bit cloudy, but the rain held off. Llegué a Zamora tarde por la tarde y fui a hacer check-in en el hotel, que estaba cerca de la estación de autobuses. Era nublado, pero solo cayó unas gotas. 

Zamora has a population of 63,217 and is located on the Duero River not far from Portugal. The city has 24 Romanesque churches, more than any other European city. Zamora tiene una población de 63.217 y está situado en el Río Duero cerca de Portugal. La ciudad tiene 24 iglesias románicos, más que cualquier ciudad europea. 

I wandered down to the river, saw the bridge, then back up to the castle and cathedral, both incredibly beautiful. I continued to just explore the city without a map, taking whatever streets I fancied. Deambulé por las calles hasta el río, vi el puente, y volví por el castillo y la catedral. Los dos eran preciosos. Seguí explorando la ciudad sin mapa, tomando cualquier calle me apetecía. 

On Saturday, I had another walk through the city before going to the bus station to catch my bus to León. I have been to the city of 127,817 three times before. I checked in, had lunch, picked up the credentials for the San Salvador at the albergue and went to Mercadona for food supplies. I miss my natural orange juice from Mercadona already, and I’ve only been in the States for four days. I digress. El sábado, paseé por la ciudad una vez más antes de ir a la estación de autobuses para ir a León. Ya había estado en la ciudad de 127.817 tres veces antes. Fui a hotel, comí, recogí las credenciales del San Salvador en el albergue y fui a Mercadona para comprar algo de comida para el Camino. Solo llevo cuatro días en los EEUU, y ya echo de menos mi zumo de naranja natural de Mercadona. Pero bueno. 

I met up with a fellow peregrino to show him around León and explain different Caminos (he was doing the Francés). Quedé con un peregrino para mostrarle León y explicar los Caminos distintos que van a Santiago (él estaba haciendo el Francés.) 

Sunday…the day I was supposed to begin, I ended up taking the bus to Ponferrada, population 65,788, a place that had long been on my must-visit places. I understood why the second I found the medieval part of town. Domingo, el día que tenía pensando empezar a Caminar, cogí el autobús a Ponferrada, población 65.788, un sitio que he querido visitar durante mucho tiempo. Entendí porque me atraía durante tanto tiempo en cuanto vi el casco viejo del puebo. 

The Castillo de los Templarios, the Templar Castle built in the 12th century, fascinated me. I had my credentials so I got the pilgrim price to enter the castle, and I’m so glad I took the time to explore it. El Castillo de los Templarios, un castillo construido en Siglo XII, me fascinó. Tenía las credenciales conmigo, y me daban el precio de peregrino para entrar. Me alegro mucho haberlo visitado. 

After the castle, I had a great lunch on an outside terrace at restaurant in the main plaza whose name I didn’t write down. Sorry. Después del castillo, comí en una terraza en un restaurante bueno, bonito y barato en la plaza mayor cuyo nombre no me acordé porque no lo apunté. Perdona. 

I got back to León in time to go to the chemist to buy some foot cream and have more tapas in the famed Barrio Humedo before going back to the hotel to rest up. Llegué a León con tiempo para ir a la farmacia para comprar crema para los pies y cenar más tapas por el famoso Barrio Humedo antes de volver al hotel para descansar. 

The next day would begin the Camino adventure 2018…El día siguiente, la aventura del Camino 2018 empezó.
