In the 1993 Spanish film Todos a la cárcel, directed by Valencian Luis García Berlanga, it’s the International Prisoner Awarness Day and victims of the Francoist era repression meet at a Valencian jail. One businessman wants the 80 million pesetas the adminstration owes him, the Communist Priest is there, and a homosexual, and the banker wants his friend out, and the mafia is represented, and, of course some people ignored the invitation. As you can predict, all of this will lead to a riot. En la película española de 1993 Todos a la cárcel, dirigido por valenciano Luis García Berlangao, es el Día Internacional del Preso de Conciencia. Los víctimas de represión de la época de Franco tienen una quedada en una prisión valenciana. Un hombre de negocio quiere las 80 milliones de pesetas la administración le debe, hay un cura comunista, y un homosexual, y el banquero quiere que le den libertad a su amigo, y la mafia también tiene representación, y, claro, algunas personas ignoran su invitación. Y claro, como puedes imaginar, todo acaba con un disturbio. 

The film won the Goya for Best Film in 1993 and Berlanga won best director. The awards were obviously to reward the director for his lifelong contribution to Spanish film and not for the actual film itself. The film descends more than once into toilet humour and cheap gags. Ok, so I laughed at them, but still. La película ganó el premio Goya por Mejor Película en 1993 y Berlanga ganó por Mejor Director. Obviamente, eran por toda su vida y todo lo que ha contribuido a cine español y no por la película misma. Hay bastante humor crudo y risas fáciles. Bueno, sí, me reía, pero…

At the same time, the film was actually a bit ahead of its time, as they mentioned banking in Panama and hinted at corruption in the government. What would Berlanga make of 2010s Spain? All these films seem to criticize today’s current Spanish government, which is one reason why they leave such a bad taste in my mouth. When the President of the Comunidad for Madrid invented a master for herself, something that sounds like a Berlanga plot, in real life, my pacience has just run out. A la misma vez, la película era un poco precoz, como hablan de bancos en Panamá y corrupción del gobierno. ¿Qué diría Berlanga de la España de los años 2010? Todos sus películas parecen criticar el gobierno español actual, que es una razón algunas no me gustaban tanto. Cuando la presidenta de la Comunidad de Madrid inventa un máster para ella misma, algo parecido a un agrumento de Berlanga, en la vida real, ya no tengo paciencia por esas cosas. 

Berlanga was at his greatest when having to be creative working around the Francoist censorship. His films are comical, but they also started to become stagnant once he was free to do whatever he wanted. Berlanga era mejor cuando tenía que ser creativo y esquivar la censura de Franco. Sus películas son cómicas, pero con la libertad de hacer lo que le daba la gana, empezaron a ser estancadas. 

Berlanga wrote the script with his son, Jorge Berlanga, this time around instead of his usual contributor Rafael Azcona. Berlanga escribió el guión con su hijo, Jorge Berlanga, esta vez en lugar de su colabrador de siempre, Rafael Azcona.
