The Comunitat Valenciana is full of surprises. La Comunitat Valenciana es una caja de sopresas. 

In 1935, they found a cave, la Cova Remígia, with paintings around 5000 years old, near the village of Ares del Maestrat population 197. The paintings are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. En 1935, descubieron una cueva, la Cova Remígia, con pinturas desde hace unos 5000 años, cerca del pueblo de Ares de Maestrat, población 197. Las pinturas son UNESCO Patrimonio de la Humanidad. 

It was the destination of the mountaineering section of Samarucs, the LGBT+ sports club of Valencia, the last Sunday of May. Fue el destino de la sección de montañismo de Samarucs, el club deportivo LGBT+ de Valencia, el último domingo de mayo. 

Eight of us met a half hour earlier than usual at Torres de Quart due to the distance. The forecast was grim, full of grey skies, rain and storms for the afternoon, so we wanted to get as much of the hike completed as possible. We stopped in La Pobla Tornesa to pick up el nostre guia, Joan. Éramos ocho que quedamos una media hora antes de normal en Torres de Quart. Dado de la distancia, quedamos más pronto. La predicción meteorológica era mala, dando lluvia y tormentas por la tarde. Queremos hacer tanto de la ruta como posible antes de la lluvia. Paramos en La Pobla Tornesa para recoger el nostre guia, Joan. 

We left one car near the end of the hike and took the van to the point of depature. The skies were grey, but the sun soon came out. We set off around 10:00 with beautiful views of the mountains. Dejamos un coche donde terminamos la ruta y fuimos en furgoneta hasta el punto de inicio. El cielo estaba gris, pero el sol salió después de un rato. Empezamos a las 10:00 con vistas bonitas de los montes. 

Part of the hike is part of the “Camí dels Pelegrins de Catí”, which has been completed every two years to ask for rain since the 14th century. As long as the rain held off until the hike was over…Valencia does need rain, even if it wasn’t the purpose of the day’s hike. Parte de la ruta forma parte del “Camí dels Pelegrins de Catí”, que han hecho desde el Siglo XIV para pedir lluvia. Bueno, mejor si la lluvia espere hasta que después de la ruta….València necesita lluvia, aunque no era la razón por la ruta. 

We continued going up, and the sun began to make an appearance. It took us about an hour and a half to reach the top, where we stopped for a snack and rest. Seguimos subiendo, y salío el sol. Nos tardó sobre una hora y media para llegar al cima, donde paramos para almorzar y descansar. 

We went down for a bit before going up again. The views were spectacular. We passed a tree that is 700 years old. I had the thought, this tree was around 150 years old when Ferdinand and Isabel got married. What other things has it seen during its life? Bajamos un rato antes de ubir otra vez. Las vistas eran espectaculares. Pasamos un árbol que tiene 700 años. Me pensé, este árbol tenía unos 150 años cuando Ferando e Isabel se casó. ¿Que más cosas habrá visto durante su vida?

The clouds began to come in again as we climbed Morral de la Marinaa, 1230 meters high (4035 feet for the Yanks.) I got a bit dizzy while climbing and had to go slower. A bit of chocolate and water helped set things right, along with a level hiking surface at the top. Los nubes empezaron a llegar una vez más mientras subimos Morral de la Marina con sus 1230 metros de altura. Me mareé algo durante la subida y tenía que ir más despacio. Un poco de chocolate y agua me ayudó, y también una tierra más plana cuando llegamos al cima. 

In the distance, we heard thunder. Había truenos en la distancia. 

However, we decided to eat quick near a pond where frogs seranaded us, and the storm stayed in the distance. Sin embargo, decidimos comer rápido por un charco donde las ranas nos cantaron, y la tormenta se quedó lejos. 

We had about two more hours of walking to the cave. With the clouds, I felt as if I were in the Basque Country more than the Comunitat Valenciana. It was beautiful with clouds, and I’m sure it would be even more beautiful with sunshine. Nos quedaban unas dos horas más del camino para llegar a la cueva. Con los nubes, me sentí como si estuviera en el País vasco más que la Comunitat Valenciana. Era precioso con nubes, y seguro sería aún más preciosa con sol. 

We arrived to the caves about a half hour early, which gave us time to rest before our tour at 17:00. Llegamos a las cuevas sobre media hora antes de la visita guiada a las 17.00, que nos daba tiempo para descansar antes. 

The paintings were interesting, and the guide explained everything to us in Valencian. Las pinturas eran interesantes, y el guia nos explicó todo en valenciano. 

We had about a half-hour descent to the cars after visiting the caves. Nos quedo una media hora de descenso para llegar a los coches después de visitar las cuevas. 

The rain did manage to hold off until the drive back to València. Maybe it was our pilgrimmage that brought it. Al menos la lluvia no empezó hasta que ya estabamos en ruta a València. Quizás fuera nuestro Camí de Pelegrins de Catí que llevó la lluvia.

It was another fantastic day with Samarucs. A special “moltes gràcies” to our guide, Joan, for another great route. Era otro día fantástico con Samarucs. Un “moltes gràcies” especial al nostre guia, Joan, para otra ruta genial.
