After 10 years in the greatest pensinula in the world, I regret to say that the long-rumoured “conscious uncoupling” is finally happening. All good things come to an end, and “every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end” (Semisonic). Después de 10 años en La Mejor Península del Mundo, lamento confirmar los rumores de un “desacoplamiento consciente” pasará al final. Se acaba lo bueno, y “Todos los inicios nuevos vienen del final del otro inicio” (Semisonic). 

After applying to various graduate programs in Hispanic Studies for the next academic year in the US and Canada, I was accepted into 4/6 of the programs. The Canadian ones didn’t offer much funding, and as appealing as a Canadian visa is right now, without funding, they just weren’t feasible. Después de solicitar programas de máster de Estudios Hispánicos para el próximo curso en los EEUU y Canadá, me admitieron a 4/6 de los programas. Los programas canadienses no tenían mucha para ofrecer de becas, y aunque un visado canadiense es muy atractivo hoy en día, sin las becas, no es viable. 

On June 30th, after hopefully arriving to Santiago via Camino de San Salvador and Camino Primitivo, I’ll be headed back to the US. After a month with my mom who isn’t doing well health wise, I’ll be moving to Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, to start my master in Hispanic Literature with a focus on 20th and 21st Peninsular Film and Literature. The Basque and Catalán focus means it’s right up my alley. The required film list includes Almodóvar, Álex de la Iglesia, Luis Buñuel, Icíar Bollaín and Luis García Berlanga. I mean…have they seen this blog? El día 30 de junio, después de, con suerte, llegar a Santiago vía Camino de San Salvador y el Camino Primitivo, volveré a los EEUU. Después de un mes en la casa de mi madre, quien no está todo bien de saludo, me trasladaré a Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, para empezar un máster de literatura hispánica con un enfoque Cine y Literatura Peninsular de Siglos XX-XXI. Hay un enfoque euskaldun/vasco y catalán, que quiere decir encaja muy bien con mis intereses. Los requisitos de películas incluye Almodóvar, Álex de la Iglesia, Luis Buñuel, Icíar Bollaín y Luis García Berlanga…¿han leído este blog? 

I am incredibly fortunate to have spent ten years in the Greatest Peninsula in the World. I came to Spain after not receiving any acceptances to grad school in 2008, and while I tried to make a master at the Universitat de València or Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona work, in the end, they didn’t happen. Estoy muy afortunado porque he pasado 10 años en la Mejor Península del Mundo. Vine a España en 2008 después de recibir solo rechazos a los programas del máster, y aunque intenté hacer un máster en la Universitat de València o Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, al final, no pude. 

Do I want to leave Spain? No. Is this the best thing for me right now? Yes. Will I be back in Spain? Yes. ¿Quiero marcharme de España? No. ¿Es lo mejor para mi ahora? Sí. ¿Volveré a España algún día? Desde luego. 

I will be busy with the master and hopefully Ph.D., but I will continue to post about any travel when it happens as time permits. I won’t be writing about any more Spanish directors for the time being, as all that work will be toward my academic career. The posts on Berlanga will carry on through June, and I will have the Camino to post about, plus the last two Spanish provinces which are conviently located near the Camino. Voy a estar bastante ocupado con el máster y espero, con tiempo, doctorado, pero seguiré escribiendo de mis viajes cuando pueda viajar y cuando tenga tiempo. No voy a escribir de otro/a director/a español/a por ahora, porque todo mi trabajo sobre cine será por mi carrera académica. Acabaré con las entradas de Berlanga en junio, y tendré que escribir sobre el Camino, y las dos últimos provincias españolas que me quedan, que están ubicadas cerca del Camino. ¡Que conveniente!
