How do you describe a film like La Escopeta Nacional? ¿Cómo explico una película como La Escopeta Nacional?

The 1978 Spanish film from Valencian director Luis García Berlanga is the first part of a famous trilogy. I am thinking it will make more sense as part of a whole than as an individual film. La película española de 1978 de director Luis García Berlanga es la primera parte de una trilogía famosa. Creo que tendrá más sentido cuando haya visto las tres peliculas.

It’s 1972, and Jaume (José Sazatornil) and his secretary/lover Mercé (Mónica Randall) are Catalán. They organise a hunting weekend at the country house of the Marquis de Leguineche, an eccentric family who Jaume must network with for a business deal. The absurd weekend is a Berlanga special of criticizing Spanish society, especially the rich. Es 1972, y Jaume (José Sazatornil) y su secretaria-amante Mercé (Mónica Randall) son catalanes. Organizan un fin de semana en una casa del campo del Marqués de Leguineche, una familia excéntrica con quien Jaume tiene que hacer negocios, para un fin de semana de caza y negocios. El fin de semana absurdo es una especial de Berlanga de criticar la sociedad española, especialmente los ricos.

It was a return to Spain for the director, now free from the censorship of the Franco regime. The film lacks a coherent plot, floating from scene to scene as we witness the eccentrics represent various sections of Spanish society. Era una vuelta a España por el director, quien por fin tenía la libertad sin preocuparse de la censura de Franco. No hay un argumento coherente, y va de escena de escena y miramos los excéntricos representar las varias partes de la sociedad española.

I recently spent four days in Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, and its vicinities. Copenhagen is a vibrant city of 775,033, and I found it very modern with tons of public transport, and, of course, bikes. They have a 7/11 on every corner it seems. Hace unas semanas, fui a Copenhague, la capital de Dinamarca, y sus inmediaciones durante cuatro días. Copenhague es una ciudad vibrante de 775.033 personas, y para mi, es una ciudad muy moderna con buen transporte público y, desde luego, muchas bicicletas. Parece tener una tienda 7/11 en todas las esquinas.

As I mentioned in the summary of my trip, I arrived on Tuesday around 9 p.m. and caught a train to Copenhagen Central. It took about 12 minutes. If you buy the ticket in the machines, there is no need to validate it, and you can also purchase tickets online to be delivered to your mobile. Como dije en el resumen del viaje, llegué martes sobre las 21 y cogí un tren a Copenhague Central, que tardó solo unos 12 minutos. Si compras el billete en las máquinas, no hace falta cancelarlo como en España, y también se puede comprar billetes por Internet que llegan a tu móvil.

I always like to get the most touristy things over with first, so my first stop was the statue of the Little Mermaid. I joked that it looked nothing like Ariel. The statue is only 1.25 metres/4.1 feet but weighs 175 kilos (385 pounds). It was designed by Edvard Eriksen and unveiled in 1913. It’s an extremely popular tourist attraction, but I was able to take pictures without people around on a Wednesday morning in April. Siempre me gusta hacer las cosas más turísticos primero, y mi primera parada era la estatua de la Sirenita. Hice la mala broma que no parecía nada a Ariel. La estatua solo mide 1,25 metros pero pesa 175 kilos. Su diseñador fue Edvard Erikesen y estrenó en 1913. Es muy popular con turistas, pero podía hacer fotos sin gente apareciendo en la foto, como era una mañana de un miércoles de abril.

I tried finding The Genetically Modified Little Mermaid, designed by Bjørn Nørgaard, which is nearby. I saw it in the distance, but I wouldn’t get a close up view until Saturday as I wanted to arrive to Amalienborg Square for the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony. Intenté encontrar La Sirenita Genéticamente Modificada, que fue diseñada por Bjørn Nørgaard, que está cerca. Fewer people attended it than the ceremony at Buckingham Palace I saw in February, but I did chat with some travellers from California a bit, giving them information from my Spanish guide as we waited. And waited. It started on time, but the ceremony is slow-moving, albeit interesting. Había menos gente que en la ceremonia de Buckingham Palacio que vi en febreo. Charlé con unos viajadores de California un rato, dándoles información de mi guía en español mientras esperamos. Y esperar. Y esperar. Aunque empezó puntual, es una ceremonia lenta (pero muy interesante).

I then went toward a nearby church and continued walking toward the city centre, stopping a bit to look at souvenirs and to take out some Danish krone from a cash machine. I made my way to Nyhavn harbour where I ended up having lunch due to the time. Yeah, even more expensive. I paid 17€ish for a open-faced meatball sandwich and apple juice. Después fui hacía una iglesia cercana y seguía caminando hacía el centro de la ciudad, parando para ver regalos y sacar corona danesa de un cajero. Fui hasta el puerto Nyhavn donde comí dado a la hora. Sí, era muy caro. Pagué unos 17€ para un sandwich abierto de albóndiga y un zumo de manzana.

Nyhavn is one of the most photographed areas of Copenhagen. It means “new harbour”, and the waterfront area has many buildings from the 18th century. Hans Christian Andersen lived there for 18 years. Nyhavn es una de las zonas donde hacen más fotos de Copenhague. Significa “puerto nuevo” y la zona por el agua tiene muchos edificios de Siglo XVIII. Hans Christian Anderson vivió allí durante 18 años.

My next stop was Rosenborg Castle, a castle built during the Renaissance as a summer house. The crown jewels are found here. The military were working out in the park nearby when I visited. La próxima parada era el Castillo Rosenborg, un castillo construido durante el Renacimiento como una residencia de verano. Aquí guardan las joyas de corono. El ejercito estaba entrenando cuando visité.

Next stop was the Rundetaarn, or Round Tower. It was originally built as an astronomical observatory. Today it’s a tourist spot for views of Copenhagen. To reach the top, one must use a 210-metre spiral ramp. Después, fui a Rundetaarn, o el Torre Redondo. Fue construido como un observatorio astronómico. Hoy es un sitio turístico para vistas bonitas de Copenhague. Para subir hasta arriba, hay que usar una rampa espiral que tiene 210 metros de altura.

I next window-shopped along the long shopping street Strøget before exploring the Christianhavn neighbourhood, where I did, out of curiousity, find the infamous Christiana. Después, miré lo que había por la calle larga de tiendas, Strøget, antes de explorar el barrio Christianhavn, donde sí, por curiosidad, visité el barrio de infame, Christiana.

Freetown Christiana is a “self-proclaimed autonomous anarchist district”, as Wikipedia puts it. It’s a place for hippies, and the sale and use of marijuana is overlooked by authorities in the area. It was created in 1971 in a military zone when squatters began living there due to lack of affordable housing in Copenhagen. El Pueblo Libre de Christiana es un “districto autónoma de anarquía auto-proclamado”, como dice Wikipedia en inglés. Es un sitio para hippies, y las autoridades ignoran la venda y el uso de marijuana. Fue creado en 1979 en una zona militar cunado desahucios empezaron a vivir allí dado a una falta de vivienda en Copenhague.

The 1971 mission statement says/La declaración de su misión de 1971 dice:

The objective of Christiania is to create a self-governing society whereby each and every individual holds themselves responsible over the wellbeing of the entire community. Our society is to be economically self-sustaining and, as such, our aspiration is to be steadfast in our conviction that psychological and physical destitution can be averted.

I arranged my day trips for Thursday and Friday. I began my last day, Saturday, in Kastellet, a well-kept citadel used between 1624 and the 1830s. I loved the windmill from 1847 and walking around and exploring. Hice unos viajes del día el jueves y viernes. Empecé el último día, sábado, en Kastellet, un ciudadela bien conservada que utilizaban entre 1624 y los años 1830. Me encantó el molino de viento de 1847 y caminar por la ciudadela y explorarla.

I then found the alternative Little Mermaid. I can’t say I always understand modern art, but it’s always interesting to say the least. Después, encontré La Sirenita alternativa. No puedo decir que entiendo bien el arte moderno, pero al menos es interesante.

I then went to Nørrebro to explore this multi-cultural neighbourhood of Copenhagen. I went to Assistens Cemetery, which is used as a park and is famous because Hans Christian Andersen and Kierkegaard are buried there. Luego, fui a Nørrebro para explorar este barrio multi-cultural de Copenhague. I stopped at an interesting café before returning to Nyhavn for lunch. I had done well with saving my krone and had money to spend before heading back to València! I bought my souvenirs and went to the Cathedral, which honestly didn’t impress me much. Fui a un café interesantes antes de volver a Nyhavn para comer. Había ahorrado mis coronas y tenía pasta para gastar antes de volver a València. Compré los regalos y fui a la Catedral, que me decepcionó algo.

I found some hygge moments along the way too. Y también encontré momentos de hygge.

It was a great but short trip. Era un viaje corto pero genial.

I’m a huge fan of Shakespeare, and Hamlet is my favourite play of his. It’s kind of fitting that I’m writing this on April 23 for publication…whenever I finish. As it’s the anniversary of his death, I’m aiming for today. Soy un gran fan de Shakespeare, y Hamlet es mi obra preferido de él. Es interesante que he empezado de escribir eso el 23 de abril…para publicación no sé…cuando acabe. Como hoy es el aniversario de su muerte y la muerte de Cervantes también, el objetivo es hoy mismo.

When I found out that the castle where Hamlet takes place actually existed, I knew I would go on a day trip to Helsingør, or Elsinore in English. The city of 61,519 is located on the Øresund, the sound between Denmark and Sweden. The train ride from Copenhagen takes about 45 minutes, and there are three trains an hour. The HH Ferry leaves from Helsingør to Helsingborg, Sweden, several times a day. Cuando me enteré que el castillo donde tiene lugar Hamlet existía en actualidad, ya sabía que iba a ir a visitarlo en un viaje del día a Helsingør (Elsinor en español). La ciudad de 61.519 personas está situado en el estrecho Øresund, (a veces Sund en castellano), el estrecho entre Dinamarca y Suecia. El viaje de tren tardo unos 45 minutos, y hay tres trenes cada hora. El HH Ferry sale desde Helsingør a Helsingborg, Suecia, varias veces al día.

My original plan was to go on Friday, but I ended up going on Thursday. It was a cloudy day, but the rain held off for the most part. I had a quick lunch and explored the quaint streets. Whereas Copenhagen feels like Anywhere, World, Helsingør felt distinctly Danish for a reason I can’t explain. Maybe the hygge. Mi plan original era ir el viernes, pero al final fui el jueves. Era un día nublado, pero solo me caía unas cuatro gotas. Comí rápidamente y exploré las calles pintorescas. Mientras Copenhagen podría ser en cualquier país del mundo, Helsingør tenía una sensación muy danesa. No puedo explicarlo. Quízas sea hygge.

I then went to Kronborg Castle, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. It’s located on the extreme northeastern part of the Zealand island. It was originally built by King Eric VII in the 1420s and converted into the Renaissance castle we know today by King Frederick II between 1574 and 1585. The royal family stopped using it as a royal residence in 1785 and was used as a military base until 1923. Después, fui al Castillo Kronborg, que ha sido Patrimonio de la Humanidad de UNESCO desde 2000. Está ubicado en el punto más al noreste de la isla de Zealandia. Fue construido por el Rey Eric VII en los años 1420s y el Rey Frederick II se lo convertió a un castillo de Renacimiento que conocemos hoy en día entre los años 1574 y 1584. En 1785, la familia real cesó usarlo como residencia real y fue un base militar hasta 1923.

Yes, there are dungeons, which I did explore. Sí, hay mazmorras y sí, las exploré.

The Royal Apartments are impressive. I could imagine the feasts that Claudius and Gertrude would have thrown, and I could easily imagine Hamlet speaking to Yorick’s skull in the dungeons too. Los Apartamentos Reales son impresionantes. Pude imaginar las comilonas que montaran Claduius y Gertrude, y también pude imaginar fácilmente Hamlet hablara con la calavera de Yorick en las mazamoras.

In winter, the price is only 90 DKK (around 12 euro), and in summer the price is 140 DKK (around 18-19 euro. There are student discounts (for once, having a Spanish student NIE worked in my favour!). En la temporada baja, el precio es solo 90 DKK (unos 12 euro) y en temporada alta el precio es 140 DKK (unos 18-19 Euro). Hay descuentos para estudiantes (por una vez, tener un NIE español de estudiante me ayudó).

I made it back to the train station just as the downpour began, but by the time I arrived to Copenhagen Centraal, the sun had come out once again. Llegué a la estación de trenes justo como empezó un diluvio, pero el sol ya había salido una vez más cuando llegué a Copenhague Centraal.

It was definitely a highlight of my trip to Copenhagen. Era uno de los momentos más memorables de mi viaje a Copenhague.

La Boutique (Las Pirañas). 1967

In the 1967 film La Boutique from Spanish director Luis García Berlanga, he jumps the pond and sets the film in Argentina. However, it’s the same Berlanga as always. En la película de 1967 de director español Luis García Berlanga La Boutique, salta el charco y hace una película que tiene lugar en Argentina. Sin embargo, es el mismo Berlanga de siempre.

Ricardo (Rodolfo Bebán) is a businessman who, despite being married to Carmen (Sonia Bruno), lives life as a playboy bachelor, spending more time with other women and his cars than he does his wife. Carmen gets smart and after talking with her mother (Ana María Campoy), decides to fake a fatal illness. Ricardo becomes a doting husband, which causes Carmen to change. She opens a boutique and becomes a successful woman. When Ricardo becomes jealous of her success and later finds out the disease isn’t real, it could lead to fatal consequences. Ricardo (Rodolfo Bebán) es un hombre de negocios que, aunque esté casado con Carmen (Sonia Bruno), vive como un playboy soltero quien pasa más tiempo con otras mujeres y sus coches que con su mujer. Carmen se hace lista, y después de hablar con su madre (Ana María Campoy), decide fingir una enfermedad mortal. Ricardo empieze a cariciar a su mujer, que provoca un gran cambio en Carmen. Abre una boutique que tiene éxito y se ve más de una ama de casa. Cuando Ricardo se pone celoso de su éxito y después se entera que la enfermadad no es real, puede llevar consecuencias mortales.

The film is the usual Berlanga critique of society. After his previous film El Verdugo angered the Franco regime, Berlanga had problems making a follow-up film and had to go to Argentina to do it. Berlanga dares to suggest that a woman could be successful (remember, 1960s, and Francoist Spain was about 100 years behind the rest of the world, which means to this very day Spain still tries to prove itself a modern country despite a current government that fancies itself Francoist-lite) and stand up to her husband who wasn’t giving her enough attention. I can’t say it’s a feminist film, especially since I saw this after Tamaño Natural, but it is a product of the 1960s. La película es la misma critica de la sociedad de siempre. La administración de Franco se puso enfadado con Berlanga después de su película anterior, El Verdugo, y Berlanga tuvo bastantes problemas con hacer su siguiente proyecto y tenía que ir a Argentina para hacerlo. Berlanga atreve a sugerir que una mujer puede tener éxito (hay que recordar que es de los años 1960s, y la España de Franco iba con un retraso de sobre 100 años del resto de mundo, que significa que España todavía intenta mostrar que es un país moderno aunque su gobierno actual se cree una versión menor de Franco). Ella lucha por sus derechos contra su marido que le ignora. No puedo decir que es una película feminista, especialmente después de ver su obra Tamaño Natural, que es muy sexista, pero también es un producto de los años 1960s.

As a product of the 1960s, the scenes in the second half of the film at the boutique are very chic and fashionable. Como es un producto de los años 1960s, las escenas en la segunda mitad de la película que tiene lugar en la boutique son muy chic con la moda de la época.

The film was originally titled La Victima, for the husband, and then Las Pirañas (which is still sometimes referred to as). As piranhas is not a nice name to call Carmen and her mother, it became known as La Boutique. El primer nombre fue La Victima, por el marido, y después Las Pirañas (a veces sigue con ese nombre). Como no es un buen nombre para Carmen y su madre, cambió el nombre a La Boutique.

As usual, Berlanga wrote the script with Rafael Azcona. Como siempre, Berlanga escribió el guion con Rafael Azcona.

This one was a bit harder to find, as it’s a minor film, but it was worth seeing and is an entertaining hour and a half. It isn’t his best work, but it isn’t his worst either. Esta película era un poco más difícil encontrar, como es una obra menor, pero vale la pena verla y es manera divertida para pasar una hora y media. No es su mejor obra, pero tampoco es su peor.

Olocau (Excursió amb Samarucs)

Olocau is a small town of 1750 residents located about 30 kilometres (18 miles) from València. It’s near the Parque Natural de Serra Calderona and home of the Iberian ruins Puntal dels Llops (more on that later). Olocau es un pueblo de 1750 habitantes situado a unos 30 kilómetros de València. Está a lado del Parque Natural de Serra Calderona y se encuentra las ruinas iberas Puntal dels Llops allí (más sobre ellas después.)

It was the destination of Samarucs, the LGBT+ sports group of València on a sunny spring Sunday, the first Sunday where València reminded us it is home of caloret this year. Fue el destino de Samarucs, el grupo deportivo LGBT+ de València, un domingo de primavera asoleado, el primer domingo del año que Valencia nos recordó de su famoso caloret.

We met at the usual meeting point of Torres de Quart. Before beginning the route, we had a café at Bar Faustino. We totaled 17 that day. Quedamos en el punto de encuentro de siempre, Torres de Quart. Antes de empezar la ruta en Olocau, tomamos un café en el Bar Faustino. Éramos 17 en total.

The hike was split into two parts of around six kilometres each. The first part was “El Castell de Real”. It went by fast, and for me, it felt somewhat short. We spent the time chatting and admiring the views. Hicimos la ruta en dos partes, unos seis kilómetros cada una. La primera parte era “El Castell de Real”. El tiempo pasaba rápido, y al menos para mi, era un poco corta. Pasábamos el rato charlando y disfrutando de las vistas.

We arrived back to Olocau around 11:00 to rest and have a snack before starting the second part of the hike, El Puntal dels Llops. This was a far more interesting hike with a steeper climb and more beautiful views of Olocau and the surrounding area. Llegamos a Olocau sobre las 11:00 para descansar y almorzar antes de empezar la segunda parte de la ruta, El Puntal dels Llops. Era una ruta más interesante con más pendiente y más vistas bonitas de Olocau y sus alrededores.

We arrived to the Iberian ruins early, and our guide was waiting for us. He explained us the entire history which was fascinating. I found myself comparing it to Pompeii, which I visited back in November. It was much smaller than Pompeii, of course. A fire destroyed most of it, but the adobe tower and stone foundations remained. They also paint a rock white every 5 years or so to be seen from València (now apparently can only be seen as far away as Burjassot). Llegamos a las ruinas de los iberos pronto y nuestro guía estaba esperándonos. Nos explicó la historia, que era fascinante. Estaba pensando en Pompeya, donde fui en noviembre. Desde luego, el Puntal dels Llops es más pequeño. Un incendió se quemó muchas de las ruinas, pero el torre de adobe y las fundaciones de piedra siguen hoy en día. También pintan una roca en un monte de Olocau cada 5 años para que se pueda ver desde València, aunque hoy en día solo se puede ser visto desde Burjassot.

After the tour of the ruins, we went down to the village and out to the Font de la Salut (Fountain of Health) and had lunch before having coffee in town. Our amazing guide, Ismael, treated us to cava before the ride back to València. Después de la visita a las ruinas, bajamos al pueblo y comemos cerca del Font de la Salut (Fuente de la Salud) antes de tomar un café en el pueblo. Nuestro guía increíble, Ismael, nos invitó a cava antes de volver a València.

It was another awesome day with Samarucs. Thanks to everyone who came and special thanks to our guide. Fue otro día genial con Samurucs. Gracias a todos que han ido y muchísimas gracias al guia. ¡Hasta la próxima!

It’s Michel Piccoli and the real girl! Umm. ¡Es Michel Piccoli y la chica real! Errr.

In Tamaño Natural (Grandeur Natural), the 1974 Spanish film directed by Valencian director Luis García Berlanga, we enter a world more similar to Luis Buñuel or Pedro Almodóvar’s world than the world we have come to expect from Berlanga. Maybe it’s the transfer from Spain to Paris? En Tamaño Natural (Grandeur Natural), la película española de 1974 dirigido por director valenciano Luis García Berlanga, entramos un mundo más parecido al mundo de Luis Buñuel o Pedro Almodóvar que el mundo que esperamos de Berlanga. ¿Quizás es el cambio de España a París?

Michel (Michel Piccoli) is a middle-aged dentist who has cheated on his wife (Rada Rassimov) many times. They live in Paris and are happy being unhappy. Then Michel meets the woman of his dreams, a mannequin/blow-up doll. (IMDB says “mannequin”. I’m calling a spade a spade.) He falls in love with the doll, and his mother (Valentine Tessier) is accepting, at least. Everyone else, however…he has conversations with the doll, dresses her up and even abuses her. Michel (Michel Piccoli) es un dentista de unos 40 años quien ha engañado a su mujer (Rada Rassimov) muchas veces. Viven en París y están contentos de ser infeliz. Y después, Michel conoce a la mujer de sus sueños, un maniquí/muñeca de goma (el IMDB dice “maniquí”, pero voy a llamarlo lo que es). Se enamora de la muñeca. Bueno, al menos su madre (Valentine Tessier) lo acepta sin problema. Todos los demás, sin embargo…conversa con la muñeca, la viste en la moda de París y incluso la acosa.

The film was made in France and wasn’t released in Spain until 1978, after Franco had died, which explains how it was made. No way would the Spanish censors have permitted this. The version I saw was, of course, badly dubbed into Spanish, which didn’t help matters much. Hizo la película en Francia y no estrenó en España hasta 1978, después de la muerte de Franco, que explica como podía hacerla. La censura española no la habría permitido, desde luego. La versión que vi, claro, era doblada malamente al español, que no ayuda nada a la calidad de la película.

While meant to be a comedy, I wasn’t laughing much, especially at the way he treated a doll. I am glad his wife ended up divorcing him. I guess seeing this film in 2018 and not 1974 really altered how I feel about this film. The scenes are supposed to be surreal, ridiculous and funny, but they come off as sexist and even misogynistic. Aunque era “comedia”, no me reí nada, especialmente en la manera de que trata a una muñeca. Me alegro que su mujer le haya divorciado. Supongo ver la peli en 2018 y no 1974 alteró como vi la película. Las escenas deberían ser surrealistas, absurdas y graciosas, pero son sexistas, machistas y incluso misóginas.

It’s also the plot of the 2006 Ryan Gosling film Lars and the Real Girl, and while I don’t remember the film too well, I think I remember it being better presented. Además, es el mismo agrumento de una película de 2006 con Ryan Gosling, Lars and the Real Girl. Aunque no recuerdo muy bien la película, creo que el tema tenía mejor presentación.

It’s an off-the-wall plot that may have worked in the 1970s, but it is the rare Berlanga that doesn’t hold up today. While I always appreciate a director/writer/artist stepping out of their comfort zone, it just didn’t work this time. Every director has their Glitter or Los amantes pasajeros, I guess. Es un argumento extraño que quizás funcionó en los años 1970s, pero es una película rara de Berlanga que no es relevante hoy en día. Aunque suelo apreciar un director/escritor/artista que intenta algo nuevo fuera de su zona de confort, no funciona esta vez. Supongo que todos los directors tienen su Glitter o Los amantes pasajeros.

I hope I can track down El Boutique, as the following films set off a trilogy that returns the director to Spain and are considered to be a highlight of Spanish film. Espero poder encontrar El Boutique, como las siguientes películas de Berlanga son un trilogía. Vuelve a España y las pelís son consideras ser unas de las mejores de la historia de cine español.

Berlanga wrote the script with Rafael Azcona, and Buñuel’s colleague Jean-Claude Carrière helped with the adaptation. Berlanga escribió el guíon con Rafael Azcona, y Jean-Claude Carrière, el colega de Buñuel, ayudó con la adaptación.

Copenhagen, Hygge, and a day-trip to Sweden.

I’m starting this entry before heading to the airport to catch my return flight to València, sitting curled up in the windowsill, gazing out the window while sipping café and having a Danish pastry. I don’t think you can get more hygge than that. Estoy empezando a escribir esta entrada antes de ir al aeropuerto para coger el vuelo de vuelta a València, sentando en el alféizar, contemplando el mundo afuera mientras tomo un café y un pastel danés. Creo que no se puede tener un momento más hygge.

I try to visit a new country every Easter holiday, and while Morocco was higher on my bucket list, I have been dying to go to Scandinavia. The direct flight from València to Copenhagen with RyanAir was cheaper, and so there it was. Intento visitar a un país nuevo cada Semana Santa, y mientras quería visitar Marreucos más, también tenía ganas de ir a Escandinavia. El vuelo directo desde València a Copenhagen con RyanAir era más barato, entonces, lo cogí.

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is a city of 606,057 people in the metropolitan area and dates back to the 10th century. I found the city to be a lot more modern than southern Europe, similar to a North American city. It does have a lot of history though. Copenhagen, la capital de Dinamarca, es una ciudad de 606.057 personas en el área metropolitano y se fundió en el Siglo X. Encontré la ciudad mucho más moderna que el sur de Europa, algo parecido a una ciudad norteamericana, aunque tiene mucha historia.

After having an hour delay due to computer problems in Brussels, I arrived to Copenhagen around 9 p.m. and caught the train to my MisterBNB’s place (an app similar to AirBNB for the gay community). The metro also connects the airport to the city. Después de un retraso de una hora dado a problemas técnicas en Bruselas, llegué a Copenhagen sobre las 21 y cogí el tren hasta el piso de MisterBNB (un app parecido a AirBNB para la comunidad gay.

On Wednesday, I did all the touristy things possible (and will write more at length on them soon). I saw The Little Mermaid, the Changing of the Guard at Amalienborg, Nyhavn, Rosenborg, the Round Tower, the Free Town commune of Christiana, and a lot of churches and plazas and such. El miércoles, hice todos las cosas más turísticas de la ciudad, (Luego, escribiré más sobre eso.) Thursday, I went to Helsingor, population 61,519, to visit the Kronborg Castle, which was made famous due to something rotten in the state of Denmark, where a prince wondered…”To be, or not to be?” Yes, the castle where Hamlet takes place. Jueves, fui a Helsingor, población 61.519, para visitar el Castillo Kronborg, que es famoso dado a algo que huele a podrido en el reino de Dinamarca, donde un príncipe se preguntó “¿Ser o no ser? Sí, es el castillo donde tiene lugar Hamlet.

Friday I made my way to Lund and Malmö in Sweden. Lund is a university town of 88,788 full of beautiful old buildings. Malmö is the third largest city in Sweden with 341,457 people. Despite some interesting older buildings and plazas, it felt extremely modern. The skyscraper Turning Torso is the tallest building in Scandinavia and was designed by cantankerous Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava. Viernes, fui a Lund y Malmö en Suecia. Lund es una ciudad universitaria de 88.788 personas que tiene muchos edificios antiguos y encantadores. Malmö es la tercera ciudad de Suecia con 341.457 personas. A pesar de unos edificios y plazas antiguos e interesantes, parecía muy moderna. El rascacielo Turning Torso es el edificio más alto de Escandinavia y fue designado por el arquitecto valenciano cascarrabias Santiago Calatrava.

Saturday was spent exploring the Norrebro district and seeing Hans Christian Anderson’s and Soren Kierkegaard’s graves. I returned to Nyhavn harbour and saw a few more things before buying my souvenirs and heading to the airport. Pasé el sábado explorando el barrio de Norrebro y viendo las tombas de Hans Christian Anderson y soren Kierkegaard. Volví al puerto de Nyhavn y después compré regalos y fui al aeropuerto.

And before heading to the airport, I took advantage of that hygge moment. When in Denmark, do as the Danish do. Antes de ir al aeropuerto, aproveché de tener un momento de hygge. Cuando en Dinamarca, haz como los daneses.

Of course, there was another delay of a half hour, this time to yet another French air-traffic controller strike. I swear, they’re in competition with the Metro of València to see who can strike more. Desde luego, había otro retraso de media hora, esta vez dado a otra huelga de los controladores de tráfico aéreo franceses. Creo que tienen una competición con el Metro de València para ver quien puede tener más huelgas.

It was an all too-short visit, but it was a good introduction to the Scandinavian countries. I hope to set foot in Iceland, Norway and Finland one day and return to explore Denmark and Sweden more. When I win the lottery. Era una visita demasiada corta, pero era una buena introducción a los països de Escandinavia. Espero ir a Islandia, Noruega y Finlandia un día y volver a explorar más Dinamarca y Suecia….cuando me toque el Gordo, claro.

I would have loved to hike Mollehoj, see Odense, and definitely explore Sweden a lot more, but I am grateful for what I did manage to see in just four days. Me hubiera encantado hacer una ruta de Mollejog, ver Odense, y explorar Suecia mucho más, pero estoy agradecido por lo que vi en solo cuatro días.

¡Vivan los novios! (1970)

Here comes the bride! Well, maybe…¡Aquí llega la novia! Pues…quizás.

In ¡Vivan los novios!, the 1970 Spanish film directed by Valencian Luis García Berlanga, Leonardo (José Luis López Vázquez) has travelled to a Mediterranean village, Sitges, with his mother (Teresa Gisbet) before his wedding to Loli (Laly Soldevila). Leonardo is a repressed banker from Burgos. On the night before his wedding, he decides to look for another woman. He doesn’t have luck, and when he returns back to the hotel, he finds his mother has died. Will the wedding go on? En ¡Vivan los novios!, la película española de 1970 dirigido por valenciano Luis García Berlanga, Leonardo (José Luis López Vázquez) ha viajado a un pueblo del mediterráneo, Sitges, con su madre (Teresa Gisbet) antes de su boda a Loli (Laly Soldevila). Leonardo es un baquero repremido de Burgos. Durante la noche antes de su boda, decide buscar a otra mujer. No tiene suerte, y cuando vuelve al hotel, descubre que su madre ha muerto. ¿Van a seguir con la boda?

The film wasn’t well received upon opening. The critics felt Berlanga went for easy and crude jokes. I found the film entertaining. It’s not his best film, but it has a certain charm. It was also fun to see Sitges in the 1970s. Tourism had already found it even then. La película no recibió buenas criticas cuando estrenó. Los críticos pensaban que Berlanga buscaba las bromas fáciles y groseras. Yo pensaba que era entretenida. No es su mejor peli, pero tiene su encanto. También era divertido ver Sitges en los años 1970s. El turismo ya había llegado.

One thing that surprised me about the film is that I heard a line in Catalán. Franco was still alive in 1970, and I’m not sure how a line in Catalán, forbidden by the Franco regime to ever be spoken, got through the censors. There was a gigantic Spanish flag at one point and enough flamenco to make it appear Andalucía, not Catalunya. Maybe that’s how? Una cosa que me extrañó era que escuche una línea en catalán. Franco seguía vivo en 1970, y no sé como una línea en catalán, que fue prohibido durante los años de Franco, era aceptada por la censura. Bueno, había una bandera española gigante en una escena y había tanto flamenco que parecía Andalucía, no Catalunya. ¿Quizás es por eso?

One complaint is that the “Irish Painter” had an American accent. Una queja que tengo es que la pintora irlandesa habla con acento estadounidense.

Berlanga wrote the script with Rafael Azcona once again. It was his first film in colour, and it was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Berlanga escribió el guión con Rafael Azcona una vez más. Era su primera película grabada en color, y fue nominado por la Palma de Oro en el Festival del Cine de Cannes.

It’s not his best, but it’s worth seeing. No es su mejor, pero vale la pena verla.

Cap de setmana de senderisme a Calp!

Calp (Valencian)/Calpe (Spanish), population 29,667, is a town in the province of Alicante, located 67 kilometres from the province capital. I had been there once before for a morning on the way to Alicante, way back in 2011, and I have always wanted to climb the impressive rock formation Penyal d’Ifac. I didn’t that day because I had a bus to catch, but seven years later, I had my opportunity when Samarucs, the LGBT+ gay sports club of València, teamed up with the senderismo section of COGAM, the gay non-profit group of Madrid, for a weekend of hiking, nature and friendship in Calpe. Calp (valenciano)/Calpe (castellano), población 29.667, es un pueblo en la provincia de Alicante, ubicado a 67 kilómetros de la capital de la provincia. Había estado una vez antes por solo una mañana, una parada por el camino a Alicante, en 2011. Siempre he querido subir la formación de roca impresionante Penyal d’Ifac. No lo hice porque tenía que coger el autobús, pero siete años después, tenía mi oportunidad cuando Samarucs, el deportivo LGBT+ de València, hizo una excursión con la sección de senderismo de COGAM, el colectivo LGBT+ de Madrid, para un fin de semana de senderismo, naturaleza y amistad en Calpe.

While the group from COGAM arrived Wednesday evening (the autonomous communities of Madrid and València have different Semana Santa holidays) and went on a difficult route Thursday to Ponox-El León Dormido (The Sleeping Lion), us Valencianos arrived Thursday afternoon and checked into 4You Youth Hostel (for Camino peregrinos, it was one of the better albergues ;)). El grupo de COGAM llegó miércoles por la tarde (las comunidades autónomas de Madrid y València tienen vacaciones de Semana Santa distintas) y hicieron una ruta dura jueves a Ponox-El León Dormido, los valencianos llegamos jueves por la tarde y nos instalamos en el 4You Youth Hostal (albergue) (para los peregrinos del Camino, era uno de los mejores albergues ;)).

Dinner the first night was salad and chicken, the second night salad and pork, the third night gazpacho and lasagna (or the vegetarian option, of course). La primera noche, cenamos ensalada y pollo, la segunda noche ensalada y lomo, y la tercera noche gazpacho y lasaña (había otra opción para los vegetarianos, desde luego).

Friday morning, we had breakfast at 8:30 before heading to the point of departure for the day. We left from the car park of Cala Lleibeg and began our hike. The route took us between mountains and the sea. The rock formations were interesting, and the trail was pretty small. There were a lot of hikers out and about that day. El viernes por la mañana, desayunamos a las 8:30 antes de ir a la punta de salida por el día. Salimos del aparcamiento de Cala Lleibeg y empezamos la ruta. La ruta nos llevó entre el monte y el mar. Había formaciones de roca interesantes, y era un sendero pequeño. Había bastantes senderistas este día, viernes Santo.

After about an hour we arrived to another cove, Cala Moraig, where we had a snack and rested for a half hour. Después de una hora, llegamos a otra cala, la Cala Moraig, donde almorzamos y descansamos durante una media hora.

A few people stayed to enjoy the beautiful cove, but most of us hiked on up to the Torre de Cap d’Or, which took about an hour and a half. We had lunch there and admired the beautiful views before heading back. Algunos se quedaron en la cala para disfrutar y tomar el sol, pero la mayoría de nosotros subimos hasta el Torre de Cap d’Or, que nos tardó una hora y media. Comemos allí y disfrutamos de las vistas bonitas antes de volver.

Clouds were gathering, but we were in luck as the rain held off until we were having our post hike drink at the chiringuito at the cala near the parking lot. Los cielos estaban poniéndose gris, pero tuvimos suerte porque no empezó a llover hasta que estábamos tomando algo en el chiringuito en la cala cerca del aparcamiento.

Saturday was Serra de Bèrnia, an 11-kilometre long mountain range between Calpe and Benidorm. A fort was built in the 16th century to protect the area from invaders. The highest peak is 1128 metres above sea level. El sábado fuimos a la Serra de Bèrnia, una sierra de 11 kilómetros entre Calpe y Benidorm. Hay unas ruinas de un fuerte que fue construido en el Siglo XVI para proteger la zona de invasores. El pico más alto es a 1128 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

After breakfast we headed off to the Bèrnia parking lot and set off on our hike. A few from Madrid stayed back to rest and have paella. This hike was a bit more demanding as it went up and down. At the Forat de Bèrnia, we had to crawl through a cave to be rewarded with amazing views of the Mediterranean Coast and Benidorm. Those skyscrapers seem so small. Después del desayuno, fuimos hasta el aparcamiento de Bèrnia para empezar la ruta. Algunos de Madrid se quedó en Calpe para comer paella y descansar. La ruta era más exigiente porque había más subida y bajada. En el Forat de Bèrnia, tuvimos que gatear por una cueva. Después, recibimos un regalo de vistas increíbles de la costa del Mediterráneo y Benidorm. Los rascacielos parecían pequeños.

We continued on to the Fort de Bèrnia, 803 metres above sea level. after a snack break to recharge. The fort offered more spectacular views, and we had lunch there. It was a bit windy. The return to the parking lot went by extremely fast. It gave us time to explore more of the coves of Calpe and the bars with terraces too. Después de un descanso para almorzar, seguimos hasta el Fort de Bèrnia, a 803 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Había aún más vistas espectaculares desde el fuerte, y comemos allí. Había viento. La vuelta al parking nos pasó volando. Por eso, había más tiempo para explorar las calas de Calpe y también los bares con terrazas.

There was karaoke on Saturday night. Había karaoke el sábado por la noche.

Sunday we checked out. Some Madrid folks had to return earlier, but 23 of us ventured to the top of the Penyal d’Ifac (Peñón de Ifach in Spanish). The 332 meter high (1089 feet) limestone rock formation sticks out high above any hotel in Calpe or even Benidorm. The Phoenicians referred to it as the “Northern Rock” to distinguish it from the Rock of Gibraltar. Today it is a natural park and is home to various flora and fauna. Nos salimos del albergue el domingo. Algunos de Madrid tenían que volver antes, pero éramos 23 quien subimos hasta el cima del Penyal d’Ifac (Peñón de Ifach en castellano). La roca de caliza de 332 metros es más alto que cualquier hotel en Calpe o incluso Benidorm. Los fenicios lo llamaron “La Roca del Norte” para distinguirla de la Roca de Gibraltar. Hoy es un parque natural y hay varios tipos de flora y fauna.

As it was Easter Sunday, many people wanted to climb it. We arrived about 10, which was good because later they began to control the number of people allowed in. It was slow going after the tunnel to the summit of the rock. The summit was a bit more complicated than I expected. At some points, there was a chain rope to hold on to as you climbed. The views were magnificent, though. Como era el domingo de Pascua, había bastante gente con ganas de subirla. Llegamos sobre las 10, que era una buena hora porque después empezaron a controlar el número de gente que permitieron. Teníamos que ir despacio después del túnel hasta la cima de la roca. La cima era más complicada que esperaba. En algunos puntos, había una cadena para soportar durante la subida. Las vistas eran magnificentes y merecían la pena.

We arrived back to the car park around 13:00, and the Madrid folks had to return to the Spanish capital. The Valencianos, plus two more who had come with COGAM, sojourned on to Moraira, a fishing village that has converted into a resort area. The population is around 10,000 and explodes to 36,000 in the summer. We stayed at the Albergue Juvenil La Marina which had great accommodations but not-so-great food. In the afternoon we explored the village. Llegamos al aparcamiento sobre las 13:00, y los madrileños tenían que volver a la capital española. Los valencianos, más dos más quien habían venido con COGAM, viajamos hasta Moraira, un pueblo pescador que se convirtió a una zona túristica. La población es unos 10.000 habitantes y explota hasta 36.000 en el verano. Nos alojamos en el Albergue Juvenil La Marina, que estaba bien menos la comida, que no estaba tan bueno. Por la tarde exploramos el pueblo.

Monday was a short walk in the Cala de Portixol near Xàbia/Javea to Cap de Prim and a beautiful lookout near a small island. The actual walk was about 40 minutes roundtrip, but we took our time to enjoy the views and company. Lunes, hicimos un paseo por la Cala de Portixol cerca de Xàbia/Javea, hasta el Cap de Prim y un mirador precioso a lado de una isla pequeña. La ruta solo era unos 40 minutos en total, ida-vuelta, pero fuimos despacio para disfrutar las vistas y la buena compañía.

It was another great hiking weekend organised by Samarucs and COGAM. Era otro fin de semana de senderismo y naturaleza genial organizado por Samarucs y COGAM.
