Surprise! A French flick! ¡Sorpresa! ¡Una peli francesa!

On my adventurous trip to the States at Christmas, I had the opportunity to check out a couple of French films, including the recent release Mission Pays Basque. As I lived in Bilbao in the Basque Country for three years, I was interested in seeing the French side of things. Durante mi aventura a los EEUU en Navidad, tenía la oportunidad de ver un par de películas francesas que incluyó la película de 2017, Mission País vasco/La Parisienne. Como viví en Bilbao en el País vasco durante tres años, fue interesado en ver el lado francés de la historia. 

Sibylle (Élodie Fontan) is the typical posh Paris woman. She’s trying to advance her career, and to do so, she has to convince a Basque family to sell their hardware store so she can turn it into a super market. She arrives, full of stereotypes about small-town life and the Basques and clashes with the guardian of the store. Ramuntxo (Florent Peyre) refuses to sell and has a typical Basque attitude. Sibylle es la típica pija de París. Quiere avanzar en su trabajo, y para hacerlo, tiene que convencer una familia vasca de vender su ferretería para que pueda convertirla a un supermercado. Llega llena de estereotipos de la vida del pueblo y los vascos y hay un choque con el guardián de la tienda. Ramuntxo no va a vender y tiene un actitud típico de los vascos. 

The two bicker, fight, and, of course, fall in love. Los dos discuten de todo y después, desde luego, se enamoran. 

While the movie isn’t anything special, it is worthwhile seeing if you’re interested in Basque culture. While I don’t think it is as good as the Spanish insta-classic Ocho Apellidos Vascos, it was fine to kill time on an eight-hour flight. Having lived in the Basque Country made the film enjoyable for me. Aunque la peli no es nada del otro mundo, vale la pena verla si estás interesado en la cultura vasca. Aunque no creo que sea tan buena como la ya clásica Ocho Apellidos Vascos, estaba bien para perder tiempo durante un vuelo de ocho horas. El hecho que viví en Euskadi hizo la película más divertida para mi.

The French Basques and the Spanish Basques, at least according to their wildly stereotyped portrayal in the film, are exactly the same. Los vascos con DNI francés y los vascos con DNI español, al menos según de su estereotipo presentado en la película, son el mismo, 100 por 100.
