Many visitors to Barcelona have often wondered just why there is a blue and red phallic tower in the Catalán capital. Muchos visitantes a Barcelona han preguntado porque hay un torre fálico con los colores azul y rojo en la capital catalana. 

The 38-storey tower was opened in 2005 and was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. It’s located near Avinguda Diagonal and Carrer Badajoz, near the Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes. In 2017, the name changed to Torre Glòries after the Merlin Properties real estate group purchased it. El torre de 38 pisos se abrió en 2005. El arquitecto Jean Nouvel lo designó. Está situado por Avinguda Diagonal y Carrer Badajoz, cerca de la Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes. En 2017, cambió el nombre a Torre Glòries después de la compra del torre por el grupo de inmobiliaria Merlin Properties. 

The architect Nouvel explained that he was inspired by Montserrat and while phallic, it was intended to represent a geyser rising into the air. As I would like for this to remain a family-friendly blog, I won’t go into metaphors. El arquitecto Nouvel explicó que Montserrat le inspiró y aunque sea fálico, quería representar un géiser subiendo al aire. Como quiero que este blog puede ser leído por toda la familia, no voy a empezar con metáforas. 

It’s also supposed to represent the bell towers of the Sagrada Familia. También dice que representa los torres de campañas de la Sagrada Familia.

Whether or not it actually resembles what it’s supposed to represent or something different, Torre Glòries is one of Barcelona’s most fascinating buildings. No importa si parece lo que dice que represente o algo diferente, el Torre Glòries es uno de los edificios más fascinantes de Barcelona. 

It’s the home to various offices. The tower is often lit up in different colours, but I’ve only seen it in blue and red, the colours of the second best fútbol club, FC Barcelona.
