2017: The review.

2017 has many reasons to be the worst year ever, but I’m not going to look at what went wrong. As an American living in Spain, I am constantly hit with two countries trying to outdo each other with horrific politicians, which makes things that much harder when I already struggle with depression and anxiety issues. Hay muchas razones porque 2017 ha sido el peor año de mi vida, pero no voy a mirar a lo que me fue mal otra vez. Como un estadounidense viviendo en España, todos los tienes recibo malas noticias de dos países intentando ganar un concurso de “Peor Político del Mundo”, que hace las cosas aún peor cuando ya tengo problemas de depresión y ansiedad. 

The thing is, I’m still kicking. La cosa es…sigo sobreviviendo, sigo aquí.

Here’s the positive: I travelled to three new provinces (Albacete, Huesca and Lugo), which means I only have two more Spanish provinces left to visit. I hiked from Gijón to Ribadeo on the Camino del Norte, arrived to Xàtiva on the Camino de Levante (Valencia part) and to Siete Aguas on the Camino de la Lana. I went hiking a ton with Samarucs, the LGBT+ sports club of València, going on weekend trips to Cuenca, Penyagolosa and la Selva de Irati with them. I also travelled to Segovia, Portugal, Asturias, Italy, Andorra, and France. Aquí es lo bueno: Viajé a tres provincias que no conocía antes (Albacete, Huesca y Lugo), que quiere decir solo me quedan dos provincias para visitar. Hice el Camino del Norte desde Gijón hasta Ribadeo, llegué a Xàtiva en el Camino de Levante (la parte valenciana) y hasta Siete Aguas en el Camino de la Lana. Fui de senderismo mucho con Samarucs, el club deportivo LGBT+ de València y fui en viajes de fin de semana a Serrania de Cuenca, Penyagolosa y la Selva de Irati con ellos. También viajé a Segovia, Portugal, Asturias, Italia, Andorra y Francia. 

I stayed in València against all odds. Me quedé en València cuando todo iba de contra de mí. 

I read a ton of good books and saw a ton of films and series. Me leí muchos libros buenos y vi muchas películas y series buenas.

Tomorrow, I’ll talk about my goals and hopes for 2018. I’ll leave off with my constant memes for the end of the year, along with my choices for the best in music, movies and television. Mañana, hablaré de mis metas y esperanzas de 2018. Acabo por ahora con los mismos memes de siempre del final del año, y también con mis elecciones de lo mejor de música, películas y televisión.

1. What did you do in 2017 that you’d never done before?:  Get fired from a summer job (FYI, I believe I was fired because I stood up to toxic masculinity! Well worth it), have a flight turn around midair to return to the airport (just wait until that entry)

2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?: Some, and I always have goals for the New Year. The goals will come soon.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?: My uni friend Heather, and one of my new co-workers did before I met her if it counts.

4. Did anyone close to you die?: The deaths happened right before 2017.

5. What countries did you visit?: Spain, United States, Portugal, Italy, France, Andorra, “Republic of Catalunya” (I was there when it was declared independent, recognised by no one).

6. What would you like to have in 2018 that you lacked in 2017?: Dogs, money, and a boyfriend! And a stable job!

7. What date from 2017 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?: The week in July on the Camino, Oct. 6-9 in Irati. Good memories. April 22 for bad memories (it started my run of bad luck.)

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?: Arriving to Ribadeo on the Camino, being accepted to Uni of Toronto in Hispanic Studies even if the funding fell through.

9. What was your biggest failure?: Coming out, financial issues, social issues, job issues, just about everything in the year was a failure.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Depression and anxiety.

11. What was the best thing you bought?: Plane/train/bus tickets 🙂

12. Whose behavior merited celebration? #MeToo, all the resisters and persisters.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?: Donald Trump, certain ex-friends of mine (keeping from 2015 *and* 2016. Scary!) I’m adding Trump supporters. At this point, if you support him, you support bigotry and everything the US stands for. If you’re a conversative who is also appalled, though, I still respect you even if I disagree with you. I do not respect Trump and his minions.

14. Where did most of your money go?: Travel, café con leche, books (kept from 2015 and 2016).

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?: Camino and Twin Peaks

16. What song will always remind you of 2016?: Troubled Times by Green Day, Despacito from Luis Fonsi, the new Shania album

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Sadder
ii. thinner or fatter? Thinner
iii. richer or poorer? about the same (poor!)

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?: Writing, travelling, hanging out with friends.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of? Procrastinating, being afraid to be who I am, worrying, and binging tv!

20. How will you be spending Christmas?: I spent it with my mom in the States.

21. How will you be spending New Years? Eating grapes at 6 PM Eastern Standard Time, which is midnight in most of the Iberian peninsula

22. Did you fall in love in 2017?: We’ll see where things go 🙂

24. What was your favorite TV program?: Twin Peaks, Jane the Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Merlí. I rewatched Buffy the Vampire Slayer, True Blood and Six Feet Under, three of my all time fave shows.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?: I’ve lost a lot of respect for a lot of people. And Kevin Spacey and others of the sort.

26. What was the best book you read?: Good question! Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, El Amor del Revés de Luisgé Martín, Brooklyn by Colm Toibin, Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, El Laberinto de Espiritús de Carlos Ruíz Zafón, the Bill Hodges trilogy by Stephen King.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?: Umm, I like The Chainsmokers. And 3/4 of No Doubt created Dreamcar.

28. What did you want and get?: I’m still in Spain, and in Valencia.

29. What did you want and not get?: A lot. But I am coping.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?: La La Land.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?: 36 and had a great first date.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?: Stability and less anxiety/depression/loneliness! (Kept from 2015 and 2016), Robert Mueller arresting certain people.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2017?: Preppy-casual

34. What kept you sane?: Jordi, my iPod, the Camino del Norte,and hiking in general.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?: David Villa, Mario Casas, Justin Baldoni (Rafa on Jane the Virgin)

36. What political issue stirred you the most?: Anyone who has been offended by Donald Trump, please raise your hand. I see everyone raising their hands. Enough said. (Kept from 2016)

37. Who did you miss?: Fallon Fey, my golden retriever, and a few friends.

38. Who was the best new person you met?: I’m still getting to know him…

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2016: Resist and persist.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year: Kept my tears inside because I knew if I started I’d keep crying for the rest of my life with you I finally built up the strength to walk away, don’t regret it but I still live with the side effects, waking up scared some nights, still dreaming about the violent times, still a little protective about the people I let inside, still a little defensive thinking folks be trying to ruin my life, still a little depressed inside, I fake a smile and deal with the side effects. -Mariah Carey

Two days in Paris (2017).

It had been 14 years since I had last visited the French capital of Paris, population 2.2 million in the city limits and 12 million or so in the metropolitan region. It’s the home of many tourist sites such as Tour Eiffel, Notre Dame, the Louvre, Moulin Rouge, the Paris Opera House, Sacre Coeur, the Théâtre des Vampires and many other places. Hace 14 años desde mi último viaje a la capital francesa, París, población 2,2 millones dentro de los límites de la ciudad y unos 12 millones en la región metropolitana. Es el hogar de sitios turísticos como el Tour Eiffel, Notre Dame, el museo Louvre, el Moulin Rouge, la Opera de París, Sacre Coeur, el Théâtre des Vampires y muchos más.

The city is world-famous and on many people’s bucket lists for a reason. There are so many things to see and do that one could spend a month and still have things to explore. La ciudad es conocido en todo el mundo y muchas personas quieren visitarla por una razón. Hay tantas cosas para ver y hacer que uno podría estar durante un mes entero y todavía tener cosas para descubrir.

It was a short weekend with my mother, who wanted to see the Tour Eiffel, the most famous symbol of Paris. We had an early morning flight from Barcelona and were catching our ride to the hotel by 9:30. We had to wait an hour or so before checking in, and after that I went exploring as my mom rested. Era un fin de semana corto con mi madre, quien quería ver el Torre Eiffel, el símbolo más famoso de París. Teníamos que coger un vuelo de Barcelona la primera hora de la mañana y estábamos en ruta al hotel a las 9.30. Teníamos que esperar una hora antes de hacer check-in, y después fui a explorar mientras mi madre descansaba.

We were staying in Department 10 (Paris is divided into 18 departments), and I started walking down toward the river, looking for a place to eat as the French eat earlier than the Spanish (or the Spanish eat later than everyone else). I found a decent, cheapish place where no one spoke English or Spanish, but I managed. Nos alojamos por el Departamento 10 (París está dividido en 18 departamentos), y empecé a caminar hacía el río Sena, buscando sitio para comer como los franceses comen más pronto que los españoles (o puede ser los españoles comemos más tarde que el resto del mundo, y sí, uso nosotros como si fuera español verdadero). Encontré un sitio bueno, bonito y barato donde nadie hablaba ni inglés ni español, pero podemos comunicar.

I then went down to the Seine to take photos of the Notre Dame and Louvre. I had already been inside both, so I didn’t need to re-visit, although if my mom were feeling up to it, I think she would’ve enjoyed both inside. I then went and retook one of my all time favourite pictures in front of the Moulin Rouge. Después de comer, fui al Río Sena para hacer fotos del Notre Dame y el Louvre. Ya había visitado los dos por dentro, y no hacía falta volver, aunque si mi madre estuviera mejor, creo que le gustaría ver los dos por dentro. Después fui para rehacer unos de mis fotos preferidas enfrente del Moulin Rouge.

Moulin Rouge is my all-time favourite movie, by the way. Por cierto, Moulin Rouge es mi película favorita.

I then went to explore Montmartre, which I fell in love with. I didn’t remember the Sacre Coeur at all, and I was really impressed with it. I was impressed with the entire barrio to be honest. I had some hot wine too. Fui a explorar más de Montmartre, y me enamoré del barrio. No me acordaba nada del Sacre Coeur, y me impresionó mucho. Me impresionó mucho todo el barrio de Montmartre para ser sincero.

My friend told me to go to Trocadero for some incredible views of the Tour Eiffel, and I obliged. I was glad I did, even though I was tired. Mi amiga me dijo que tenía que ir a Trocadero para vistas increíbles del Torre Eiffel, y le hice caso. Me alegro mucho haber ido aunque estaba cansado.

The next morning, my mom and I went up the Tour Eiffel. It was a cool, grey November morning. We only went to the second floor as all the online tickets to go to the top had been sold out, and there was no way my mom was up to wait in the lines. I’ve been to the top before, in 2003, but I felt bad for her. It was crowded and cold, but it was the Tour Eiffel. It started to rain just as we caught a taxi to go back to the hotel. La mañana siguente, mi madre y yo subimos el Torre Eiffel. Era un mañana fresquito (frío) y gris de noviembre. Solo podemos subir hasta la segunda planta como las entradas para ir hasta la tercera planta eran agotadas y mi madre no podía esperar en las colas. Ya había subido hasta arriba en 2003, pero me sabía muy mal por ella. Había mucha gente y mucho frío, pero venga, es el Torre Eiffel. Empezó a llover justo como cogemos el taxi para volver al hotel.

Later, she rested and I returned to explore Montmartre and some of the shopping districts in the afternoon. Después, ella descansó y volví para explorar más de Montmartre y algunos de los sitios de compras por la tarde.

After dinner, I had the opportunity to meet up with a fellow blogger, one of my favourites, who was visiting Paris at the same time. For those who don’t follow Rutas Trazadas, I highly recommend him. It was great meeting up with a fellow blogger! Después de cenar, tenía la oportunidad conocer uno de mis blogueros favoritos quien estaba visitando París al mismo tiempo. Para los que todavía no siguen Rutas Trazadas, os lo recomiendo mucho. ¡Estaba guay conocer otro bloguero de viajes!

Sunday we had another flight and were leaving Paris all too early. I still have yet to make it to Versailles, and there are a ton of other places to visit. I didn’t plan this portion of the trip too well, but we had been going for nearly three weeks. It was a great trip, and my impression of Paris this time around was greater than my previous visit in 2003. Domingo, tuvimos otro vuelo y era un viaje demasiado corto a París. Todavía me queda Versailles, y hay muchos otros sitios que quiero visitar. No planifiqué este parte del viaje muy bien, pero ya habíamos viajado durante tres semanas y estaba cansado. Era un buen viaje, y París me impresionó mucho más este viaje que el viaje anterior en 2003.

Sos del Rey Católico.

Every time there is a list of beautiful villages in Spain, the Aragones village Sos del Rey Católico is somewhere near the top. It’s been on my radar for about seven years now, but without a car, it’s a difficult place to get to. Cada vez que hay una lista de pueblos bonitos de España, el pueblo aragonés Sos del Rey Católico siempre sale alto en la lista. Llevo años deseando ir, pero sin tener coche, es un sitio complicado para ir.

Cue the road trip with my mother. Por eso, en el viaje de coche con mi madre, aproveché.

We had to go back to Barcelona to catch a flight, so I made sure we passed by the village. We had already passed by close, and if I had known just how close, we would have stopped on the way to Donostia. Nevertheless, it was a good stopping point on the way back, even if a bit out of a direct route between Bilbao and Barcelona. Teniamos que volver a Barcelona para coger un vuelo, y aseguré que pasamos por el pueblo. Ya habíamos pasado cerca, y si hubiera sabido tan cercano estábamos el lunes anterior, habríamos parado por el camino a Donostia. Sin embargo, era un buen punto de parada por la vuelta, aunque un poco de desavío de una ruta directa entre Bilbao y Barcelona.

We left Bilbao about 9 in the morning without any problems. I figured out how to allow toll roads on the GPS, so we were doing well. The route took us south, past Vitoria-Gasteiz and on through Navarra again. Beautiful views, of course. Salimos de Bilbao a las 9 de la mañana sin problemas. Por fin, me enteré en como pude permitir peajes en el sistema de GPS. Íbamos bien. La ruta nos llevó al sur, y pasamos Vitoria-Gasteiz y después Navarra otra vez. Vistas preciosas, desde luego.

The village of Sos del Rey Católico only has 614 residents, but it has a famous past. It was founded in 907 and incorporated in 1044. In 1452, the Queen Juana Enríquez Córdoba moved there and gave birth to Ferdinand, who later married Isabel and created this different country called Spain. El pueblo de Sos del Rey Católico solo tiene 614 habitantes, pero tiene un pasado famoso. Se fundió en el año 907 y se incorporó en 1044. En 1452, la Reina Juana Enríquez Córdoba se trasladó allí y dio la luz a Ferdinand, quien después se casó con Isabel para crear este país diferente que llamamos España.

The village today has a beautiful castle with amazing views, a Parador (I wish I had stayed at this one too!), Palacio de los Sada, where Ferdinand was born, and the old city gates. It’s the perfect medieval village to wander, and I did just that for about an hour, absorbing as much as possible. Hoy en día, el pueblo tiene un castillo bonito con vistas impresionantes, un Parador (ojalá que pudiera alojarme en este también), Palacio de los Sada, donde nació Ferdinand, y las puertas antiguas de la ciudad. Es el pueblo medieval perfecto para deambular, y lo hice durante una hora, absorbiendo tanto como posible de este pueblo magnifico.

Not to give any spoilers, but the 1985 film La Vaquilla was filmed there, by my next project director, Luis García Berlanga. No quiero daros ningún spoiler, pero grabaron la película de 1985 La vaquilla, y su director Luis García Berlanga será el próximo proyecto.

The rest of the trip went without incident. I stopped in Ejea de los Caballeros so we could have lunch. It was American Thanksgiving Day, but a regular Thursday in Spain. It was a good lunch either way for only 12€. El resto del viaje era sin problemas. Paré en Ejea de los Caballeros para la comida. Era el día de Acción de Gracias en EEUU, pero un jueves normal en España. No importa, comemos bien para solo 12€.

It was a relief to finally make it back to the motorway/highway where I could go 120 KM an hour again. We arrived to Barcelona without incident, although the car navigation suggested I stop to rest twice along the way. I listened. Any excuse for a café con leche! Era un gran alivio llegar al autovía donde pude conducir a limite de velocidad de 120 kilómetros otra vez. Llegamos a Barcelona sin incidente, aunque la navegación de coche me dijo dos veces que debería parar para descansar. Le hice caso.

This road trip was over, but the next day we had an early morning flight to…Hemos terminado el viaje de coche, pero el próximo día tuvimos que coger un vuelo primera hora de la mañana a….

Ruta de la Cova Negra, Xàtiva. ¡40/40!

I’ll continue writing about my mother’s Euroadventure from November, but I wanted to make sure I got this entry in during 2017. Voy a seguir escribiendo de la aventura de Europa de mi madre en noviembre, pero quería asegurar que esta entrada era publicado durante 2017.

My plan was to arrive to Requena via el Camino de Requena part of the Camino de la Lana Camino de Santiago, but the train to Siete Aguas is just so horrible I couldn’t go through with it. I slept an hour more and caught the 9:23 Cercanáis train from València Nord to Xàtiva. About 50 minutes later, I was in Xàtiva. El plan original era llegar a Requena por la parte del Camino de la Lana Camino del Santiago que se llama “Camino de Requena”, pero el tren hasta Siete Aguas es tan horrible que no me apetecía nada. Podía dormir una hora más y cogí el tren de Cercanías que salió desde València Nord hasta Xàtiva. Llegué unos 50 minutos después.

Xàtiva is a town of 28,973 residents located on the River Albaida and is the home of two popes. It’s most famous for a beautiful castle on a mountain near the town which I visited in 2011. Xàtiva es un pueblo de 28.973 habitantes situado en el Río Albaida. Dos papas nació allí. Es conocido por un castillo bonito en un monte a lado del pueblo. Lo visité en 2011.

I stopped at the tourism office to ask about the exact route I had discovered on the town’s tourism web site. They gave me a brochure with detailed instructions of the PRV-78 route. As soon as I found the Font dels Dolls, I took the wrong street…but found my way rather quickly to Cami de Sant Antoni. From there, it was well-marked. Fui a la Oficina de Turismo para preguntar sobre la ruta que había descubierto en el sitio web de turismo del pueblo. Me dieron una guia de la Ruta PRV-78. En cuanto encontré el Font dels Dolls, fui por la calle incorrecta…pero después encontré el Cami de Sant Antoni sin problema. Desde allí, fue buen señalado.

The first part of the route that goes to the Cova Negra was somewhat popular. I ran into a lot of bikers and runners. It wasn’t too hard, and there were a lot of beautiful views to admire along the way. La primera parte de la ruta que va hasta la Cova Negra era bastante popular. Vi muchos ciclistas y corredores. No era muy duro, y había muchas vistas bonitas para ver por el camino.

For me, the Cova Negra wasn’t so special, but the area around it most definitely was. After passing Cova Negra, there were a few options at a fork in the road. I wanted to keep to the PRV-78, so I got to climb up a steep hill. I was rewarded with peace and quiet and amazing views of the area around Xàtiva, including its famous castle. Para mi, la Cova Negra no fue tan especial, pero la zona sí, era especial. Después de pasar Cova Negra, había una bifurcación con bastantes opciones. Quería seguir por el PRV-78, y por eso, tenía la oportunidad subir un pendiente fuerte. Fui premiado con tranquilidad y vistas increíbles del alrededores de Xàtiva, incluso su castillo famoso.

I don’t remember going up as much as I went down. It just seemed like the path went down way more than it went up. Easier for me, I guess. The trail passed some fountains, abandoned houses, occupied houses and an orange farm before going back around to the castle and Xàtiva. No recuerdo subir tanto como tenía que bajar. Me parecía que el sendero bajó mucho más que subí. Más fácil para mi, supongo. El sendero pasó unos fuentes, casas abandonadas, casas ocupadas y una arboleda de naranjos antes de volver al castillo y Xàtiva.

I stopped in a clearing to have lunch around 14:00 and rest a bit. I thought I was only about halfway through, but I was closer to 3/4ths of the way through. Paré en un collado para comer sobre las 14 y después descansar un rato. Pensaba que solo había hecho la mitad, pero había hecho ya 3/4 de la ruta.

I arrived back to Xàtiva around 16:00/4 pm, tired and ready to head back to Valencia. It was the perfect hike to reach my goal of 40 hikes in 2017. Llegué a Xàtiva sobre las 16, cansado y listo para volver a València. Era la ruta perfecto para llograr el reto de 40 rutas en 2017.

One of my goals during my mom’s visit to Spain was to show her as many places I lived as possible. It wasn’t going to be possible to see Linares or Toledo, and I am on a permanent boycott of Madrid now, but I did have to take her to Bilbao, Capital of the World. Uno de mis retos durante la visita de mi madre a España era enseñarle tantos sitios donde he vivido como posible. No iba a ser posible ver Linares o Toledo, y ahora estoy haciendo un boicot permanente de Madrid, pero tenía que llevarle a Bilbao, la capital del mundo. 

Travelling to the north of Spain any time of year is a huge gamble with the weather, and even more so in November. The drought the entire peninsula is suffering (albeit less in the north) helped us out in these sense, as it was 20s C (68-70 F) and bright sun. The rain arrived the day we left. Viajar al norte de España en cualquier época del año es un riesgo con el tiempo, y aún más en noviembre. La sequía de que España está sufriendo (aunque menos en el norte) nos ayudó en este sentido, como hizo sol y temperatura sobre 20º. La lluvia llegó el día después de irnos. 

Tuesday we slept in a bit before heading toward some of my favourite places, the natural biosphere of Urdaibai and the village of Mundaka. My mom was impressed with the coast, and when I took her to San Juan de Gaztelugatze, an amazing ermita built on an island with 220ish steps, she was more than impressed. Martes, dormimos más tarde que normal antes de ir a unos de mis sitios preferidos, como la biosfera de Urdaibai y el pueblo de Mundaka. Le impresionaron mucho las vistas del mar a mi madre, y cuando le llevé a San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, una ermita increíble construida en una isla con unas 220 escaleras, era más que impresionada. 

I stopped at a restaurant near Gernika for lunch before heading back to San Sebastián-Donostia. I dropped my mom off at the hotel, and I went for a sunset walk around the Nuevo Paseo, one of my favourite places in one of my favourite cities. In fact, the header of SetMeravelles was taken there. I tried to recreate it. Paré en un restaurante cerca de Gernika para comer antes de volver a San Sebastián-Donostia. Le dejé a mi madre en el hotel y di un paseo por el Nuevo Paseo a la hora de atardecer. Es uno de mis sitios preferidos en una de mis ciudades preferidas. De hecho, hice la foto de cabecera de Setmeravelles allí, y intenté re-crearla. 

On Wednesday, we went to Bilbao, la capital del mundo and my home between 2013 and 2016. Along the way, we stopped at Urkiola where I walked around the stupid meteorite 13 times backwards in hopes that I’ll get married in the next six months. Urkiola is a nature park with a sanctuary. Miércoles, fuimos a Bilbao, la capital del mundo y mi hogar entre 2013 y 2016. Por el camino, paremos en Urkiola donde caminé al revés en un círculo alrededor el meteorito con la esperanza de casarme dentro de los próximos seis meses. Urikiola es una parque natural con un santurario. 

We then went to Castro-Urdiales in Cantabria before going to the hotel in central Bilbao. My mom was impressed with the beautiful coastal towns of the Cantabrian Sea. Después, fuimos a Castro-Urdiales en Cantabria antes de ir al hotel en el centro de Bilbao. Mi madre era impresionada con las costas bonitas del Mar Cantábrica. 

I went to all my favourite places and tried to see a few friends along the way. Fui a mis sitios preferidos y intenté ver algunos amigos durante la tarde.

I’ve already written about all the places I’ve seen a few times, but I will leave you with the photos from this three-day adventure in Euskadi.  Ya he escrito bastante sobre todos los sitios, pero os dejo con las fotos de esta aventura de tres días en Euskadi.

Road Trip Día 2! La Seu d’Urgell-Andorra-Donostia.

After a night in a nice, comfortable Parador, I awoke early to explore the village where it was located, La Seu d’Urgell. The village of 12,366 is located in the northern part of the Catalán province of Lleida near Andorra in the heart of the Pyrenees. The town is 691 metres above sea level (2267 feet for the Yanks). Después de una noche en un Parador bonito y cómodo, me desperté con ganas de explorar el pueblo donde estaba ubicado, La Seu d’Urgell. El pueblo de 12.366 personas está situado en el norte de la provincia catalana de Lleida cerca de Andorra, puro Pirineo. El pueblo está a 691 metros de altura sobre el mar.

It was cold in the quaint town, and my tour was all too brief. I would love to make it a base for hiking some day, as there are a lot of mountains nearby. The town is located on two rivers. Alas, we had to get on the road early, so no hiking for me. Hizo mucho frío en el pueblo pintoresco, y mi tiempo allí fue demasiado corto. Me encantaría estar allí unos días para hacer rutas de senderismo algun día, como tiene muchos montes a lado. Hay dos ríos en el pueblo. Una pena que tuvimos que salir pronto, y no pude hacer senderismo. 

The first stop was the small country of Andorra, population 77,281. The country is situated between Spain and France in the Pyrenees and has been a principality since 1278 headed by the Bishop of Urgell in Spain and the President of France. It’s known for skiing and being a tax haven. The official language is Catalán. La primera parada era el país pequeño de Andorra, población 77.281. El país está situado entre España y Francia en el Pirineo y ha sido un principalidad desde 1278. Reconoce el Obispo de Urgell en España y el Presidente de Francia como su jefes del estado. Es conocido por sus pistas de esquí y ser un paraíso fiscal. El idioma oficial es catalán. 

My mom wanted to just say she stepped foot in the country. I would have liked time to explore the country more, as I’ve only been to the capital city. We drove to Sant Julià de Lòria and stopped for a few minutes. She was still having walking problems, so it wasn’t a long trip. Mi madre solo quería poder decir que ha pisado el país. Me gustaría haber tenido más tiempo para explorar el país más, como solo conozco la capital, Andorra la Vela. Fuimos a Sant Julià de Lòria y paramos un rato. Mi madre todavía tenía problemas de caminar. Entonces, no era un viaje muy largo. 

We were still stopped and questioned by the Spanish Guardia Civil (police) at the border. They wanted to know how much money we had on us, look at the trunk and ask where we were going. It was a bit unnerving thanks to the size of the gun. Of course, they let us through without any problems, and we were off on a long day. After the adventure of the day prior, I was not wanting to drive at night. En la frontera entre Andorra y España, la Guardia Civil española nos detuvo para hacernos preguntas. Querían saber cuanto dinero en efectivo tuvimos, mirar la maletero y preguntarnos donde íbamos. Me puse nervioso dado a las armas que tenían. Claro, nos dejaron pasar sin problemas, y empezamos el viaje largo. Después de la aventura del día anterior, no quería conducir después de atardecer. 

I made it to Lleida without fighting with the car’s navigation, and from Lleida we caught the motorway that went to Huesca, A22. We stopped for gas/petrol in Monzón. Later, because there were toll roads, and I still hadn’t figured out how to reprogram the car’s navigation system, we were taken through the backroads of Huesca and Zaragoza provinces. Llegué a Lleida sin discutir con el sistema de navegación del coche, y desde Lleida cogemos el autovía que va a Huesca, la A22. Paremos para gasolina en Monzón. Después, dado a peajes, y dado que no sabía progamar el sistema de navegación, fuimos por las carreteras secundarias de las provincias de Huesca y Zaragoza. 

I pulled off at a hostal-restaurant near the road next to some beautiful mountains in Murillo de Gállego. I was just in Huesca for the first time in March, and I already got my opportunity to go back. Honestly, can’t I just have a job where I get paid to go hiking these beautiful natural areas? Comemos en un hostal-restaurante a lado de la carretera con vistas de montes preciosas en Murillo de Gállego. Fui a Huesca por la primera vez en marzo, y ya era mi oportunidad de volver. ¿Por qué no puedo tener un trabajo donde me pagan hacer senderismo en estas zonas de naturaleza preciosas? 

The road continued through beautiful landscapes, so I wasn’t complaining about not being on the motorway/highway. If it hadn’t already been approaching 4:00 in the afternoon, I would’ve stopped in Sos del Rey Católico. La carretera seguía por paisajes preciosas, y no me quejé de no estar en el autovía. Si ya no fuera casí las 16, habría parido en Sos del Rey Catolico. 

At a coffee stop in Navarra, I double checked with Google Maps and the car’s navigation system. I went with Google Maps as it was much shorter. I’ll apologise now, as I was driving, I wasn’t able to take a lot of pictures, and my mom’s camera wasn’t working and she’s not the best with her iPad, so the pictures do not do the landscapes justice. Durante una parada para café en Navarra, miré Google Maps para comprararlo con el sistema de navegación del coche. Fui con Google Maps porque tenía una ruta más corta. Ya pido perdón ahora. Como estaba conduciendo, no podía hacer muchas fotos, y la camera de mi madre no estaba funcionando y no sabe bien como funciona su iPad, entonces, las fotos no hacen justicia a los paisajes. 

We later arrived in Donostia-San Sebastián just before sunset and made our way to the Pensión San Martín. I got my mom settled in and her wifi and went off to visit the capital of the Basque province Gipuzkoa, population 186,095. It’s my favourite city in Spain if not the world…and once again, I’ve only seen the sun shine and refuse to believe it rains there. Everything is lies from their neighbours in Bilbao, capital of the world! Después, llegamos en Donostia-San Sebastián justo antes de atardecer y fuimos a nuestra pensión, la Pensión San Martín. Le ayudé a mi madre estar cómoda y le conecté al wifi y fui a ver la capital de la provincia de Gipuzkoa, que tiene una población de 186.095. Es mi ciudad preferida de España si no el mundo, y otra vez, solo vi el sol y no creo que llueva tanto allí. ¡Todo es una mentira de sus vecinos de Bilbao, la capital del mundo!

There’s just something about a road trip. I love being behind the wheel on the open road. Hay algo sobre un viaje en coche. Me encanta estar detrás el volante en la carretera abierta.

That said, I hate driving in cities. To avoid driving in Barcelona, I arranged to pick up the car at Barcelona Prat. After picking up the car and maneuvering it to the motorway, we were on our way by 10:30. Ahora, tengo que admitir una cosa. Odio conducir en las ciudades. Para evitar conducir en Barcelona, hice la reserva de coche en la oficina de Barcelona Prat. Después de recoger el coche y encontrar la autopista, estábamos en el camino antes de las 10.30.

I was having problems with the navigation. I’m pretty used to Google Maps for walking, bikes and public transport, and I have no experience with a car GPS system. Whoever had the car before us had changed the system to avoid toll roads, which I didn’t figure out until it was already too late. Foreshadowing…El sistema de navegación del coche me daba bastante problemas. Estoy acostumbrado a Google Maps para caminar, ir en bici y transporte público, y no tengo experiencia usar un sistema de GPS de coche. La persona que tenía el coche antes cambió el sistema para evitar peajes, que no me di cuenta hasta que ya era demasiado tarde. Un señal de cosas de provenir.

The first stop was so fitting for me this year, Cadaqués. The village of 2820 people has been visited by many famous people, including artist Salvador Dalí and writer Federico García Lorca. Luis Buñuel probably visited with them too. The village is on the Cap de Creus cape near France and offers stunning views of the Mediterranean. La primera parada tenía mucho sentido para mi este año. Cadaqués. El pueblo de 2820 residentes ha sido visitado por muchos famosos, incluso un tal artista que se llama Salvador Dalí y un tal escritor que se llama Federico García Lorca. Creo que Luis Buñuel visitó Cadaqués con ellos. El pueblo está en el cabo Cap de Creus cerca de Francia y ofrece vistas impresionantes del Mediterráneo.

My mom was shocked. I hadn’t told her anything about where we were going, and she loved it. I had been once before, in 2011, and I always wanted to go back. I still want to go back to explore the cape hiking. We didn’t stay long. I popped into the Dalí museum to get a post card for a friend. With the shorter autumn days, I was a bit nervous about driving. Mi madre estaba asombrada. No le dije nada sobre donde ibamos, y le encantó. Había estado una vez antes, en 2011, y siempre he querido volver. Todavía quiero volver para explorar el cabo al pie en rutas de senderismo. No quedamos mucho tiempo allí. Fui al Museo Dalí para comprar un postal para una amiga. Con los días más cortos de otoño, estaba nervioso de conducir.

I then proceeded to make my first mistake listening to the car’s GPS system. While we saw some beautiful coastal villages, I knew we should be going more toward the interior of the province of Girona. When we reached the French border, my suspicions were confirmed. Después, hice el primer error por escuchar al sistema de GPS del coche. Aunque vimos algos pueblos de costa preciosos por culpa el error, sabía que deberíamos estar yendo hacía el interior de Girona ya. Cuando llegamos a la frontera francesa, mis sospechas fueron confirmadas.

I figured out the way I wanted to go, and we passed Figueras, Dalí’s home town on the way to another special village of Girona I wanted to share with my mom, Besalú. The village of 2400 residents is most famous for its medieval bridge over the River Fluvià. It was as stunning as ever, and my mom started to understand just why I love the Iberian peninsula so much. Encontré la ruta que quería hacer, y pasamos Figueras, donde nació Dalí, por el camino para ir a otro pueblo especial de Girona que quería enseñarle a mi madre, Besalú. El pueblo de 2400 habitantes es más conocido por su puente medieval por el Río Fluvià. Era tan impresionante como nunca, y mi madre empezó a entender porque me encanta la Península Ibérica tanto.

The navigation system acted up again and took us through a back farm road. The sun was setting, and I wanted to get to our hotel as soon as possible. My heart sank when the GPS told us we still had two hours to go before arriving at the Parador in La Seu d’Urgell. Of course, as the darn thing was set to avoid tolls, which I didn’t know, and I thought I had selected the fastest route (not what that stood for!), it ended up taking us more than two hours. El sistema de navegación empezó a comportarse mal una vez más y nos llevo por una pista de granja. El sol estaba poniéndose, y quería llegar al hotel tan pronto como posible. Me puse triste y frustrado cuando el GPS me dijo que todavía nos quedaban dos horas antes de llegar al Parador de La Seu d’Urgell. Claro, como estaba evitando peajes, que no sabía, y pensaba que había elegido la ruta más rápido (no era lo que el icono quería decir, creo), nos tardó más de dos horas. 

It took us through some pretty bad roads up and down and all around the Pyrenees. Nos llevó por muchas carreteras malas arriba, abajo y por todos los lados de los Pirineos. 

I stopped for another café to give me some energy after crossing the Lleida border. I had already given up on seeing that village I’ve wanted to see for eight years, Puigcerdà, and my heart ached to go there when I saw its name on a sign. Pare para tomar otro café para darme energía después de entrar la provincia de Lleida. Ya he dejado la idea de ver ese pueblo donde he querido ir durante 8 años, Puigcerdà, y el corazón quería ir allí cuando vi su nombre en una indicación.

We finally arrived at the Parador. I’ve always wanted to stay in a Parador, and it was a nice experience. Was it the best hotel I ever stayed in? No. Did it live up to my expectations? No. It was on par with a nicer Holiday Inn in the US. It was still a great place to stay, and I want to stay in another one with a special someone. I wish we had had more time to enjoy the hotel. Por fin, llegamos al Parador. Siempre he querido dormir en un Parador, y era una buena experiencia. ¿Fue el mejor hotel donde me he alojaod? No. ¿Llegó a mis expectivas? No. Era parecido de un buen Holiday Inn en los EEUU. Todavía era un buen hotel para dormir, y quiero alojarme en uno algún día con alguien especial. Ojalá tuviéramos más tiempo para disfrutar del hotel pijo.

Perfectos Desconocidos (2017).

It’s 2017, and it looks like those six friends, plus another, from El discreto encanto de la burguesía have finally found a place to have that dinner in the latest film from Basque director Álex de la Iglesia, Perfectos desconocidos. Es 2017, y parece que estos seis amigos, más uno más, de El discreto encanto de la burguesía por fin han encontrado un sitio adecuado para cenar en la última película de director vasco Álex de la Iglesia, Perfectos desconocidos.

It’s the day of a blood moon, or lunar eclipse, and the streets of Madrid are going crazy. Seven friends meet for dinner (sounds like the Luis Buñuel flick, right?). Everyone is preoccupied with their phones, and the idea for a game comes up. Russian Roulette. They place their mobiles in the centre of the table, and whatever text, Whatsapp or call comes through MUST be shared with the entire group. Es el dia de una luna de sangre, o eclipse lunar, y las calles madrileñas están volviéndose locas. Siete amigos quedan para una cena (parece la peli de Luis Buñuel, ¿no?). Todos están preocupados con sus móviles, y alguien tiene una idea para un juego. Ruleta rusa. Todos ponen sus móviles en el centro de la mesa, y cualquier mensaje de texto, Whatsapp o llamada DEBE ser compartido con todo el grupo. 

Of course, secrets come out, and as the eclipse reaches its peak, the friends are now out for blood. Desde luego, todo el mundo se entera de todos los secretos de los demás, y como el eclipse llega a su punto culminante, los amigos quieren sangre. 

Álex de la Iglesia is at his best when he’s making social commentary, and the film does just that. While based on the 2016 Italian film Perfetti sconosciuti, it comes off as pure de la Iglesia and his symbiotic excess. The commentary is biting but honest. How well do we know our friends and our romantic partners? What is hidden on their phone? Alex de la Iglesia hace sus mejores películas cuando está comentando de la sociedad de hoy en día. La película hace esto. Aunque es basada en la película italiana de 2016 Perfetti sconosciuti, parece puro Alex de la Iglesia y su “symbiotic excess.” La comentaria es fuerte pero honesto. ¿Hasta que punto podemos conocer nuestros amigos y pareja? ¿Qué tienen escondido en su móvil? 

He honours a lot of Spanish film, whether intentional or not. The plot is reminiscent of the classic Buñuel film, although these friends do get to eat dinner.  The moon backdrop of Madrid reminds me of Pedro Almodóvar’s Mujeres al borde de ataque de nervios. Hace homenaje a la historia de cine español, aunque no sé si fue intencional. El argumento me recuerda de la película clásica de Buñuel, aunque al final estos amigos cenan. El fondo con la luna y Madrid me recuerda del fondo clásico de Mujeres al borde de ataque de nervios de Pedro Almodóvar. 

The Spanish screenplay was written and adapted by de la Iglesia and his frequent companion Jorge Guerricaechevarría. The exquisite cast includes Belén Rueda, Eduard Fernández, Ernesto Alterio, Juana Acosta, Eduardo Noriega, Dafne Fernández and Pepe Nieto. El guión español fue escrito y adaptado por de la Iglesia y su compañero frecuente Jorge Guerricaechevarría. El reparto exquisito incluye Belén Rueda, Eduard Fernández, Ernesto Alterio, Juana Acosta, Eduardo Noriega, Dafne Fernández y Pepe Niete.

It was the first time collaborating with de la Iglesia for most of the cast. It worked brilliantly. Para la mayoría del reparto, era su primera vez colaborando con de la Iglesia. Funcionó genial. 

How to tell Álex de la Iglesia is from Bilbao: That moon is the biggest moon I have ever seen. The friends have the biggest fight I have ever seen. La luna es la luna más grande que he visto. Los amigos tienen la discusión más fuerte que he visto.

It’s that time of year again, when the writer of Setmeravelles, Pablo, celebrates his birthday (12-12). To celebrate the renewal and the beginning of the 36th season of The Pablo Show, we at Setmeravelles have decided to once again publish an exclusive interview. Ya toca esta parte del año otra vez, cuando el escritor de Setmeravelles, Pablo, cumple años (el día 12 de 12). Para celebrar la prorroga y el inicio de la 36ª temporada del Show de Pablo, nosotros de Setmeravelles vamos a publicar una vez más una entrevista exclusiva.

Setmeravelles: First, let’s just congratulate you on getting renewed for a 36th season. That’s longer than The Simpsons! Do you feel old yet? Primero, te vamos a felicitar para las noticias que va a ser una 36ª temporada. Este es más temporadas que Los Simpson. ¿Ya te sientes mayor?
Pablo: I still feel 17 or something. I don’t feel old. Todavía me siento 17 o algo. No me siento mayor para nada.

Setmeravelles: 2017 was a horrible year for just about everyone. I understand in addition to the news , you’ve had a lot of personal problems. 2017 fue un año horrible para casí todo el mundo. Entiendo que en adición a las noticias, también has tenido muchos problemas personales. 
Pablo: 2017 has honestly been one of the worst years of my life. It’s taken the horribleness of 2002, 2008 and 2015 and made them worse. I don’t even want to talk about it. Para ser sincero, 2017 ha sido uno de los peores años de mi vida. Es como si cogiera todo lo malo de 2002, 2008 y 2015 juntos para ser un año aún peor. Ni quiero hablar de ello.

Setmeravelles: Okay then. Where do you go from here? Bueno…entonces…¿qué vas a hacer ahora?
Pablo: I don’t even know! I’m about to head back to the gym, something missing for the past six months in between the various cross-peninsula trips I’ve had to take to renew my visa, the horrible living situations (looks like I’m looking for a flat yet AGAIN), and an challenging European trip withmy mother. I think now that I’ve started work again at a decent school, things may start to look up once I find a new place to live. Once I can start hiking again. Once I am back at the gym to deal with all the toxic anxiety and depression emotions I’m prone to. Que yo sé. Estoy a punto de volver al gimnasio, algo que me faltaba durante los últimos seis meses entres de los viajes que crucen toda la península para prorrogar el visado, las situaciones horribles de piso (sí, estoy buscando por una habitación OTRA VEZ), y un viaje difícil por Europa con mi madre. Creo que ahora que he vuelto a trabajar en un buen instituto, las cosas van a empezar a mejorar en cuanto tenga un sitio nuevo para vivir. Cuando pueda volver a hacer senderismo. Cuando vuelva al gimnasio para trabajar con estos emociones tóxicas de ansiedad y depresíon que suelo tener. 

Setmeravelles: That sounds like a start. What else is in store for the 36th season. Spoilers are okay! Bueno, es un inicio. ¿Qué más tienes pensando para la 36ª temporada? No pasa nada si nos da un spoiler. 
Pablo: I’ve been working on applications to do a master in Hispanic studies. This year has brought me so much hurt, and I need a huge life change. We’ll see what happens. He estado trabajando en solicitudes para hacer un máster en estudios hispánicos. Este año me ha traído tanto dolor, y necesito un cambio de vida grande. A ver que pasa. 

Setmeravelles: Any travel goals? ¿Algún reto de viajar?
Pablo: Of course! I’m really wanting to go to Morocco, but Scotland, Hungary, Denmark, Croatia, Montenegro, a return to Greece, well, wherever. There are so many places I want to travel to and so little money. I also have planned to finish the Camino de Santiago in June, starting in León to walk the Camino San Salvador to Oviedo, then the Primitivo to Santiago and Finisterre. Desde luego. Quiero mucho viajar a Marruecos, pero también hay Escocia, Hungaria, Dinamarca, Croacia, Montenegro, una vuelta a Grecia…bueno…a cualquier sitio. Hay tantos sitios que quiero ver y tan poco dinero. También tengo pensando llegar a Santiago y Finisterre este junio, empezando en León para hacer el Camino San Salvador hasta Oviedo y después coger el Primitivo hasta Santiago. 

Setmeravelles: Sounds great! ¡Me parece genial!

Pablo: I don’t even want to think about it. Can we just Eternal Sunshine everything that’s happened since June, except for my week on the Camino del Norte and the weekend in Selva de Irati? Ni quiero pensarlo. ¿Podemos Eternal Sunshine (el nombre en inglés de ¡Olvídate de ti!) todo que me ha pasado desde junio, menos la semana del Camino del Norte y el fin de semana en Selva de Irati?

Setmeravelles: Umm, that’s just a film. Lo siento, pero solo es una película. 
Pablo: Oh! Well…despite all the bad that’s happened, I’m trying my best to maintain an optimistic outlook for my future, that the 36th season will be a rebound year. Next year at this time, I hope to be able to smile a bit more. I hope things will be better. ¡Ay! Bueno…a pesar de todo lo malo que ha pasado, estoy intentando mirar el lado bueno de las cosas y ser optimista del futuro, que la 36ª temporada será un año de recuperación. Pablo: Yeah, I know. I don’t know how I’ve made it to Season 36 without having an actual boyfriend. C’mon! Ya lo sé. No sé como he llegado a la 36ª temporada sin tener un novio real. Venga.

Pablo: I know, which is the difficult part! Ya lo sé, que es la parte difícil. 

Setmeravelles: A quick look back at the accomplishments of Season 35 with all the bad. You crossed Albacete, Huesca and Lugo off the list of Spanish provinces and only have two more, you walked another 150 kilometres on the Camino del Norte, you’ve already done 39/40 hikes with the 40th planned…and you saw every full-length non documentary film by Luis Buñuel. That’s quite a year! Una mirada atraás a la 35ª temporada con todo lo malo. Has tachado Albacete, Huesca y Lugo desde las provincias españolas y solo te quedan dos más. Has caminado unos 150 kilómetros más en el Camino del Norte. Ya has hecho 39/40 rutas con la 40 planificada….y has visto todas las películas de larga duración que no son documentales de Luis Buñuel. ¡Menudo año!
Pablo: And rewatched all of True Blood, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Six Feet Under, plus loved every single second of the film or series or whatever Twin Peaks and continued with the amazing Jane the Virgin. También vi de nuevo todo de True Blood, Buffy cazavampiros, y A dos metros bajo tierra, más disfrutar de cada segundo de la peli o serie o no sé que Twin Peaks y seguí con la increíble Jane the Virgin.
