We all know The American Dream, but what does the Spanish dream look like? In the 1996 Spanish film Hello, Are You There, directed by Icíar Bollaín, we see a glimpse of what it might be. Todo el mundo conoce el sueño americano, pero ¿cuál es el sueño español? En la película española del año 1996 Hola, ¿Estás sola?, dirijida por Icíar Bolláin, vemos un poco de lo que puede ser. 

Niña (Silke) is living with her conservative father in Valladolid. After he walks in on her in an intimate moment with a guy, the two argue and she walks out. She finds herself living with Trini (Candela Peña). After the two are evicted, they decide to take off to Málaga to work on the beach no matter what. Trini isn’t happy entertaining the tourists, and when she finds out Niña’s mother is in Madrid, she talks Trini into moving to Madrid to find a life there. Niña (Silke), vive con su padre conservador en Valladolid. Después de entra la habitación suya durante un momento intimo con un chico, Niña y su padre discuten y ella se va de la casa. Después, vive con Trini (Candela Peña). Después de echan las dos de la casa, deciden ir a Málaga para trabajar en la playa de cualquier manera. A Trini no le gusta nada tener que trabajar con turistas, y cuando se entera que la madre de Niña vive en Madrid, convence a Niña para trasladarse a Madrid para buscar la vida.

Niña’s mother (Elena Irureta) has a plan to make money. Niña falls for a Russian, Olaf (Arcadi Levin), and the two girls start to fight. They befriend Pepe (Álex Angulo). When the Russian disappears, they head back to Málaga, with Niña wondering where Olaf disappeared to. La madre de Niña (Elena Irureta) tiene un plan para ganar dinero. Niña se enamora de un ruso, Olaf (Arcadi Levin), y las chicas empiezan a discutir mucho. Conocen a Pepe (Álex Angulo) y hacen una amistad con él. Cuando desaparece el ruso, vuelven a Málaga, aunque Niña quiere encontrar a Olaf. 

The film explores the struggles of two young women from Castilla to find and define themselves in 1990s Spanish society. It was a great first effort from the director, although she had plenty of room to grow. She had help on the script from Basque director Julio Medem, one of my favourites. La película explora los problemas de dos chicas jovenes de Castilla para encontrarse y definirse en la sociedad española de los años 1990. Era un buen primer esfuerzo de la directora, aunque iba a ir creciendo desde este momento. El director vasco Julio Medem, uno de mis preferidos, le ayudó con el guión. 

It’s an honest portrayal of Spanish youth before the infamous crisis came along in the late 00s. It’s a time when the world is your oyster and it feels like anything could be possible. Es una mirada sincera en la juventud española antes de la crisis de infame que vino en los años 2000. Es un tiempo cuando el mundo promete y cualquier cosa es posible. 

Candela Peña is remarkable as Trini, and her performance impressed me more than anything else. Candela Peña es increíble como Trini, y su papel me impresionó más que nada. 

The film isn’t her best work, but it does show Bollaín’s potential. No es su mejor película, pero muestra la potencial de Bollaín.
