También la lluvia (2010)

It’s an understatement to say “it’s complicated” when describing the 2010 Spanish film También la lluvia (Even the Rain) from director Icíar Bollaín. Decir “es complicada” para describir la película española de 2010 También la lluvia de directora Icíar Bolláin es una sutileza. 

A Spanish film crew (with Mexican director Sebastián played by the always delightful Gael García Bernal) is in Bolivia to make a film about Columbus. Luis Tosar is Costa, the executive producer. They decide to use locals as extras for $2 and take advantage of them to do tasks that aren’t part of their job. When they cast Daniel (Juan Carlos Aduviri) as Atuey, the Taíno chief who started a rebellion against Columbus, they find themselves caught in an actual rebellion as Daniel is leading the revolt during the 2000 Cochabamba (Bolivia) protests against water privitazation. Will the movie be made against all costs? Un equipo de rodaje (con director mexicano Sebastián interpretador por Gael García Bernal, quien siempre es increíble y guapo) está en Bolivia para hacer una película sobre Colón. Luis Tosar es Costa, el productor ejecutivo. Deciden usar gente de la zona como extras y pagarles solo $2 estadounidenses y les aprovechan. Les dan tareas que no son parte del trabajo de ser un extra. Cuando dan el papel de Atuey, el jefe Taíno quien empezó una rebelión contra Colón a Daniel (Juan Carlos Aduviri), entran en un rebelión real porque Daniel es un líder de una revuelta, la revuelta de 2000 en Cochababma contra la privitazación de agua. ¿Van a seguir rodando dado a los costes? 

I have to admit, the beginning of the film is very slow and boring. I remember starting it in 2011 and never finishing it due to being bored. The second half of the film I was riveted and couldn’t look away from the screen. The acting and directing are top-notch, and it explains a real situation that I knew nothing about through the lens of a fictitious event. He de decir que el inicio de la película es bastante lento y aburrido. Recuerdo que en 2011 la empecé a ver y nunca lo terminé porque estaba aburrido. La segunda mitad era mucho mejor. Estaba muy enganchado, queriendo saber que iba a pasar. La actuación y la dirección son de lo mejor. Explica una historia real de que no sabía nada por el cristal de un evento ficticio. 

The parallels of a Spanish film crew during these protests and Columbus’s arrival in the Bahamas are pretty obvious. Los paralelos de un equipo de rodaje español durante los disturbios y la llegada de Colón a las Bahamas son bastante obvíos. 

According to Wikipedia, Bollaín said “It was the gold 500 years ago, and now it’s the water, which is the gold of the 21st century. Before it was the Crown of Spain and the pope who approved the conquest. Now it is the new theologians, the IMF and the World Bank. Again it’s the word from above, saying, ‘This is right.’ The Spanish filmmakers in the film-within-a-film are caught in the middle. They have the attitude of neo-conquerors – they go there because it’s cheap. But they’re also trying to make a film that casts a different look on the conquest. And it’s an adventure.” Según Wikipedia, Bollaín dijo “Hace 500 años, era el oro. Ahora es el agua, que es el oro del Siglo XXI. Antes era la Corona de España y el Papa quien aprobaron la conquista. Ahora es los teólogos nuevos, el IMF y el World Bank. Otra vez es la palabra de arriba, diciendo “Está correcto.” Los directores en la película dentro de película están en el medio. Tienen la actitud de neo-conquistadores- van allí porque es barato. Pero también están intentando hacer una película que mira la conquista en una manera distinta. Y es una aventura.”

The film was chosen to represent Spain at the Oscars but wasn’t nominated. It also failed to win the Goya for Best Film it was nominated for, losing to Celda 211. España eligió la película como su representación en los Oscars pero al final no fue nominada. También perdió el Goya para Mejor Película a Celda 211.

Mexican director Alejandro González Iñarritu was attached to the project for many years before Bollaín took over. Paul Laverty, Bollaín’s partner, wrote the script. El director mexicano Alejandro González Iñarritu quería hacer la película durante años antes de Bollaín la hizo. Paul Laverty, el pareja de Bollaín, escribió el guion.

My mom’s European trip to which I played guide to is coming to a close. By the time this post publishes, I’ll be back in València, and she’ll be returning home on next week. As usual, trips didn’t go as planned. However, I will be writing a lot about my experiences over the next few weeks. El viaje de Europa de mi madre, para que yo he hecho guía, está acabando. Cuando esta entrada publique, ya estaré en València, y ya vuelve a EEUU la semana que viene. Como siempre, el viaje no ha ido como planificado. Sin embargo, voy a estar escribiendo mucho durante las semanas que viene. 

Now is the time to reflect on the trip overall. On Nov. 3, I left Valencia, and since then, I have been to Milan, Lago di Como, Venice, Rome, Pompeii, Naples, Barcelona, a hiking day trip, a road trip through Catalunya and the Pyrenees to the Basque Country (taking in Donostia and Bilbao), then back to Barcelona to fly to Paris, then back to Spain for Málaga and Granada, along with some very beautiful villages along the way. Ahora toca reflejar sobre el viaje. El 3 de noviembre, me fui de València, y desde entonces, he estado en Milán, Lago di Como, Venecia, Roma, Pompeya, Napolés, Barcelona, una ruta de senderismo, un viaje por coche por Catalunya y los Pirineos hasta el País vasco (parando en Donostia y Bilbao), vuelta a Barcelona por volar a París, vuelta a España para visitar Málaga y Granada, y hemos parados en unos pueblos muy bonitos por el camino. 

My mom’s injuries kept her from seeing a lot that she wanted. It’s been frustrating because I’ve wanted to show off my second country for a long nine years. I think our relationship is even more strained now. I tried my best to be patient, and while she may not have seen as much as she liked, she at least saw some places she has dreamt about her entire life and more she had no idea existed. Las lesiones de mi madre le ha detenido de ver algunas de las cosas que quería ver. Me puso frustrado más de una vez porque llevo años con el deseo de enseñarle mi segundo país. Creo que nuestra relación es más distante que nunca. Intenté ser paciente, y aunque no ha visto tanto como quería, al menos ha visto algunos sitios que siempre ha soñado con ver y algunos más que no sabía que existía. 

I have learned that if it’s not highway/motorway driving, I don’t want to drive. Don’t ask me what it was like to drive in Málaga or Granada. Aprendí que si no es por la autovía/autopista, no quiero conducir. No me preguntes como es conducir en Málaga o Granada. 

I’m now headed straight into a new school with the same old job that is frustrating me. I hope the school is a good match and these next six months are a great one as I await word on graduate schools and my future. Do I really want to leave? No. Is there any way I can stay in the same circumstances as I have these past few years? No. If I could survive as a writer somehow in València? Yes please. Ahora vuelvo a un instituto nuevo para el mismo trabajo de siempre que me frustra tanto. Espero que el sitio y yo encajemos bien y los próximos seis meses sean buenos mientras espero noticias de los programas del máster y mi futuro. ¿Quiero irme de España? No. ¿Podría seguir con las mismas circumstancías de siempre? No. ¿Si pudiera sobrevivir como escritor en València? Sí, porfa. 

I also have to find a new place to live. You might recall my flat hunt in August? Well, things were a living hell for reasons I’m not going into in a travel/Spanish cinema blog. También tengo que encontrar un sitio para vivir. Quizás recuerdas de mi busqueda de piso en agosto? Bueno, era un infierno para razones de que no voy a hablar en un blog de viajes y cine español. 

This month has had a lot of ups and downs. My mom’s style of a different hotel every night doesn’t mesh well with my more relaxed style of savouring a city for a few days before moving on. I am exhausted. Her 1970s, 80s and 90s road trips through the US/Canada aren’t a realistic concept of 2010s Europe! Este mes ha tenido sus puntos positivos y negativos. El estilo de viajar de mi madre donde se aloja en un hotel distinto cada noche no encaja bien con mi estilo más relajado de saborear de una ciudad durante unos días antes de ir al próximo sitio. Estoy agotado. ¡Sus viajes por coche en los años 1970s, 80s y 90s por los EEUU y Cánada no son un concepto real de Europa en los años 2010!

And so many of the places I would have done differently if travelling by myself or with my non-existent boyfriend. In the end, I’m grateful for a chance to have seen so many places though.  Y muchos de los sitios habría hecho en una manera distinta si estuviera viajando solo o con mi novio que no existe. Al final, estoy agradecido por tener la oportunidad para viajar a tantos sitios. 

I am now looking forward to the chance and the time to continue to write about the experience. I hope to have the next installment (Rome) by Friday (the English is written and it’s about half translated to Spanish now.) Me da ilusión tener la oportunidad y el tiempo para escribir sobre la experiencia. Espero tener la próxima entrada (Roma) para viernes (ya tengo el inglés escrito y solo me queda la mitad para traducir a español ahora.)

Getting Lost in Venezia (2017 Edition)

It seems everyone has heard of Venice, the Italian city of 264, 579 people (55,000 in the historic centre), 118 islands, and 400 bridges over its 177 famous canals. We all dream of romantic gondola rides through the city or having a gelato on the banks of the Grand Canal. We see it in films and read about it in books. Parece que todo el mundo ha oído hablar de Venecia, la ciudad italiana de 264.579 personas (55.000 de ellas en el centro histórico), 118 islas, y 400 puentes sobre sus 177 canales famosos. Todos soñamos con viajes de gondolas románticos por la ciudad o tomar un gelato en las orillas del Grande Canal. Vemos la ciudad en las películas y leemos de ella en los libros.

Although the city is prone to flooding (I saw parts underwater), tourists still are drawn to the city like a moth to a flame. I was in Venice once before for an afternoon in 2008, when it was so cold I spent more time ducking in for a cappuccino for the heat than I did exploring the beautiful city. I’ve always wanted to return, and as it was my mom’s dream to take a gondola ride on the canal, I had my opportunity. Aunque la ciudad suele sufrir inundaciones (vi algunas partes inundadas), la ciudad sigue atrayendo turistas como un fuego atrae bichos. Estaba en Venecia una vez antes, solo por una tarde, en 2008. Hizo tanto frío este día que la mayoría de mi tiempo allí estaba tomando cappuccino en los bares y no explorando la ciudad preciosa. Siempre he querido volver, y como era el sueño de mi madre hacer un viaje en una gondola en los canales, tenía mi oportunidad.

The original plan was a night in Venice and a night in Florence, but due to my mom’s newfound problem walking, we decided to stay two nights in Venice once we had arrived. The train left a rainy Milano Centrale at 9:45, and around noon it was arriving to a very grey skied Venice. El plan original fue una noche en Venecia y una noche en Florencia, pero dado al hecho que mi madre tenía problemas de caminar de repente, decidimos hacer dos noces en Venecia cuando llegamos. El tren salió de un Milano Centrale lluvioso, y sobre mediodía estaba llegando en una Venecia muy nublada.

The train station goes over a causeway that reminds me very much of the Cedar Point Causeway in Sandusky, Ohio (26 miles/41,8 km from my childhood home) over Lake Erie. As motor vehicles are not allowed in the historic centre, the train and bus station (at Piazzale Roma) are the final parking points before entering the city of canals. La estación pasa por un puente tipo pasarela (pero por el tren) que me acordaba del Cedar Point Causeway en Sandusky, Ohio, a 41,8 kilómetro de mi hogar de juventud sobre el Lago Erie. Como los vehículos operados por motor no están permitidos en el centro histórico, las estaciones de autobús (Piazzale Roma) y tren son los últimos puntos para aparcar antes de entrar la ciudad de canales.

We took a vaporetto to arrive to our hotel. A single/one-way on the water bus costs 7.50€ in 2017, and a day pass costs 20€. My mom was so excited to see her dream, and I watched the city pass by from the deck. Cogemos un vaporetto para llegar al hotel. Un viaje de solo ida en el autobús de agua cuesta 7,50€ en 2017, y un bono de día cuesta 20€. Mi madre estaba muy emocionada ver su sueño, y vi la ciudad pasar por la cubierta.

I usually don’t recommend hotels here, but I have to recommend our Venice hotel due to the incredible staff who was very helpful with my mom’s problems with walking. The Locanda Ca Messner is a fantastic place to stay  and is located near the Basilica and Peggy Guggenheim collection. No suelo recomendar los hoteles en el blog, pero he de recomendar nuestro hotel de Venezia dado a los empleados geniales quien eran muy amables y nos ayudaron mucho con los problemas que mi madre tenía. El Locanda Ca Messner Hotel es un hotel fantástico para alojarse y está situado a lado de la Basilica y la Colección de Peggy Guggenheim.

After lunch and check-in, it was raining pretty heavily and the wind destroyed my umbrella. I went out for a little exploring around 6 p.m. and to have a caffé ginseng, my new fave Italian coffee. I found a nice caffé, Caffé Brasilia, but didn’t spend much time out and about as the rain picked up again. Another reason we added a night to our Venice stay. Después de comer y hacer el check-in, estaba lloviendo fuerte y el viento destrozó mi paraguas. Pude salir para explorar un rato sobre las 6. Tomé un caffé ginseng, mi caffé italiano preferido ahora. Encontré un buen caffé, el Caffé Brasilia, pero volví pronto al hotel como estaba lloviendo otra vez.

Monday morning, I slept in a bit, had a great breakfast at the hotel and set off to explore the city as my mom continued to rest. I debated on going to the nearby Padua but decided to stay in Venice to explore the incredible winding streets and canals. Lunes, dormí tarde, desayuné muy bien en el hotel y salí para explorar la ciudad mientras mi madre descansaba. Pensaba en visitar el cercano Padua pero al final me quedé en Venecia para explorar sus calles y canales sinuosas impresionantes.

My route was pretty random, and I tried not to look at the map too much. Granted, everywhere there are signs for Rialto (one of the bridges on the Grand Canal), Piazza San Marco and the train station, but it may not be the most direct route. I was grateful for better weather as I meandered the alleys and bridges. Mi ruta era más o menos al azar, y intenté no ver el mapa o Google Maps mucho. Vale, hay señales para Rialto (uno de los puentes del Canal Grande), Piazza San Marco y la estación de trenes, pero no siempre era la ruta más directa. Estaba agradecido por el mejor tiempo mientras deambulé las calles y puentes.

In the evening, I arranged for a wheelchair for my mom so she could see the city too and get back to the train station for the next part of our journey…Rome. Por la tarde pedí una silla de ruedas para mi madre para que pudiera ver la ciudad también y volver a la estación de trenes para la próxima etapa de nuestra viaje…Roma.

It was not fun having to push said wheelchair in the pouring rain the next morning through the flooded streets, nor rush back to return the wheelchair, then to the hotel to get the luggage and rush back to the train station in an hour, all through flooded streets. However, it was an adventure I would never forget, and hey…it was all in Venice so I can’t complain too much. No me divertí nada empujar la silla de ruedas en el diluvio la mañana siguiente por las calles inundadas, no correr para devolver la silla de ruedas y volver al hotel para recoger el equipaje y ir corriendo a la estación de trenes en solo una hora, todo por las calles inundadas. Sin embargo, era una aventura que nunca me olvidaré, y bueno, todo pasó en Venecia y no me puedo quejar tanto.

Nevertheless, even a four-hour train ride didn’t dry me out. Sin embargo, no estaba seco al final del viaje de trende cuatro horas.

Mataharis (2007)

Women often have to do it all, and in the 2007 Spanish film Mataharis, director Icíar Bollaín examines how three women try to juggle work and their family lives. Muchas veces las mujeres tienen que hacerlo todo, y en la película española del año 2007 Mataharis, directora Icíar Bollaín mira como tres mujeres intentan el acto de malabarismo entre sus vidas laborales y sus vidas personales. 

Three women detectives are assigned to various cases in Madrid.  Eva (Najwa Nimri) just returned from maternity leave, and she finds out a secret about her husband Iñaki (Tristán Ulloa) that threatens their marriage. Inés (María Vázquez) is assigned to find out the truth behind a factory’s union and finds herself caught in the struggles between the union and factory. Carmen (Nuria González) is investigating why a marriage is falling apart yet is unable to see that her own marriage is in shambles. The line between their jobs and personal lives begins to become more and more blurry. Tres detectivas están asignadas a casas varias en Madrid. Eva (Najwa Nimri) acaba de volver a trabajar después de la baja laboral de maternidad, y se entera de un secreto de su marido Iñaki (Tristán Ulloa) que amenaza su matrimonio. Inés (María Vázquez) está asignada el caso de encontrar la verdad de los problemas entre un sindicato y una fabrica y después se encuentra en el centro de la discusión problemática. Carmen (Nuria González) está investigando la ruptura de un matrimonio pero no puede ver que su propio matrimonio tiene problemas. La linea entre sus vidas laborales y personales cada vez es más borroso. 

The film is another solid work from Bollaín, although not quite as good as her others. I found myself wondering when the film was going to get going. It’s a slow, subtle look at three women in a traditional male world of private detectives. La película es otra película bien hecha de Bollaín, aunque no llega a las alturas de sus otras. Me pregunté mientras estaba viéndola cuando iba a empezar el argumento. Es una mirada lenta y sutil de tres mujeres en el mundo tradicionalmente de hombres de detectives. 

While it doesn’t quite live up to expectations after seeing the director’s other works, it does (sort of) cover the important topic of women in a male-dominated career film which makes it worth a view.  Aunque no llega a mis expectivas después de ver sus otras películas, en su manera se trata del tema de mujeres en un trabajo dominando de hombres, y por eso merece la pena verla. 

The film is named for “Mata Hari”, a famous Dutch spy in World War One. Había una espía holandesa “Mata Hari” durante la Primera Guerra Mundia que da nombre a la película.

Milano y Lago di Como.

Every time I’ve travelled to Italy, I’ve been left with wanting to see and do more and kicking myself for something I didn’t do, even though I had good reasons not to at the time. Cada vez que he viajado a Italia, siempre me he quedado con ganas de ver y hacer más y lamentando algo que no hice, aunque tenía mis razones de no hacerlo cuando estaba.

During my 2012 visit to Milan, I really wanted to visit the nearby Lago di Como but didn’t due to being tired and wanting to save 10 Euros (hah! I do love the Catalán culture / joke) I didn’t. I’ve always regretted it. Durante mi viaje a Milán en 2012, quería visitar el cercano Lago di Como pero no fui al final dado a estar cansado y querer ahorrar unos 10€ (¡Ja! Me encanta la cultura catalana / broma) No fui, y siempre lo he lamentado.

Lucky for me, I had the opportunity to make up for that mistake during my mom’s visit to Europe. As she wanted to see Italy, I arranged for our first stop to be Milan so she could see the Duomo and I could go to Como. Tenía suerte. Tenía la oportunidad arreglar mi error durante la visita de mi madre a Europa. Como ella quería ver Italia, la primera parada era Milán para que pudiera ver el duomo y yo pudiera ir a Como.

After her fall, she wasn’t quite up for sightseeing (and wouldn’t be until two weeks later), so we decided that she would rest and I would continue to do things as I could. Después de su caída, no estaba lista para ver los monumentos (y iba a tardar dos semanas para recuperarse por completo). Decidimos que ella iba a descansar y yo iba a hacer las cosas como pudiera.

Milan is the second-largest city in Italy with a population of 1,360,422 residents in the city proper. It’s known as the fashion capital in the world. It also has a beautiful cathedral, Il Duomo, the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world. My first stop there on Friday night was to visit the beautiful cathedral once again. Even though it was my third visit, it never gets old admiring the incredible architecture. Milán es la segunda ciudad de Italia con una población de 1.360.422 habitantes en la ciudad. Es conocido como la capital mundial de la moda. También tiene una catedral preciosa, Il Duomo, la Catedral Gótica más grande del mundo. Mi primera parada en Milán el viernes era para ver la catedral una vez más. Aunque era mi tercera visita, no me canso de admirar la arquitectura increíble. 

On Saturday, I caught a train from Milano Cardona around 9 a.m. I was arriving in Como, population 84,394 around 10:00. I went for a long walk around the beautiful Lago di Como, finally crossing it off my bucket list. It was just as beautiful as I had imagined. The Huffington Post called it “the most beautiful lake in the world” in 2014, and with reason. The Alps are in the distance, and the villages are charming and quaint. El sábado, cogí un tren desde Milano Cardona sobre las 9 de la mañana. Estaba llegando en Como, población 84.349, sobre las 10. Di un paseo por el bonito Lago di Como, tachándolo de mi Bucket List. Era tan preciosa como imaginaba. El Huffington Post dijo que “era el lago más bonito del mundo” en 2014, y tiene razón. Las Alpes están en la distancia, y los pueblos son encantadores y pintorescos.

After exploring Como and its streets, shopping in their Saturday market and having a cappuccino, I decided to take a boat ride to Bellagio instead of taking the funicular to the top of the mountain in Como. It was an overcast day, so I figured the lake would be a better experience. I caught a fast boat from Como to Bellagio, which took about an hour. I don’t believe I stopped taking pictures once. Después de explorar Como y sus calles, mirando las cosas de su mercado de sábado y tomar un capuccino, decidí coger un barco a Bellagio en lugar de coger el funicular al cima del monte de Como. Era un día nublado, y por eso pensaba que el lago sería una mejor experencia. Cogí el barco rápido desde como a Bellagio, que tardó sobre una hora. Creo que no paraba de hacer fotos ni un segundo.

Bellagio is famous because American actor George Clooney has a villa there. I didn’t see him, but I did see a lot of beautiful buildings in the village of 3820 residents. Bellagio is most famous for its views of the lake. After a quick lunch, I headed on to Varenna to catch the train back to Milan, 60 kilometres (37 miles) away, so I could check in on my mother, who was resting just fine. Bellagio es conocido porque el actor estadounidense George Clooney tiene una villa allí. No le ví, pero vi muchos edificios bonitos en el pueblo de 3820 habitantes. Bellagio es más conocido por sus vistas del lago. Después de comer rápido, seguí a Varenna para coger el tren de vuelto a Milán a 60 kilómetros para poder ver como estaba mi madre, quien estaba descansando bien.

I could’ve spent a week in Como alone exploring and hiking. Such a beautiful world, so little time and money. Creo que podría pasar una semana entera en Como explorando el lago y haciendo senderismo. Un mundo tan bonito, tan poco tiempo y dinero.

Katmandú, un espejo en el cielo (2011)

We saw what happens with immigrants in Spain in Spanish director Iciar Bollaín’s prior film Flores del otro mundo. Now we see what happens when a woman from Catalunya tries to make a difference as a teacher in Nepal in the 2011 film Katmandú, un espejo en el cielo (A Mirror in the Sky). Ya hemos visto que pasa con los inmigrantes en España en la 1999 película de directora española Icíar Bollaín Flores del otro mundo. Ahora vemos lo que pasa cuando una mujer de Cataluña intenta hacer una diferencia como una profesora en Nepal en la película de 2011 Katmandú, un espejo en el cielo. 

Laia (Verónica Echegui) is volunteering as a teacher in the slums of Kathmandu, Nepal. She is determined to make a difference in the lives of the Nepali children. Two months later, she is on the verge of being deported due to visa restrictions, so she reluctantly marries a guy from Nepal. She falls in love with the country, her husband and the people, wanting to help them and start a school. Together with a local friend, Sharmila (Sumyata Bhattarai), she tries to make a difference in their lives. Laia (Verónica Echegui) está haciendo de voluntario como un profesora en los barrios pobres de Katmandú, Nepal.  Es determinada cambiar las vidas de los niños de Nepal. Dos meses después, está a punto de deportación dado a restricciones de visado, y decide casarse, aunque no quiere, con un hombre de Nepal. Se enamora del país, de su marido y la gente. Quiere ayudarles y empezar un colegio. Con su amiga de la ciudad, Sharmila (Sumyata Bhattarai), intenta hacer una diferencia en sus vidas. 

As an English teacher in Spain, I really related to her struggles as a teacher in a foreign land. Perhaps the movie’s subject matter affected me, as I loved the film. It only has a 6.3 rating on IMDB though, much lower than her previous films. Como un profesor de inglés en España, me relaciono bastante con sus dificultades como una profesora en un país extranjero. Quizás el tema de la película me tocó bastante, como me encantó la película. Solo tiene un medio de 6,3 de los críticos de IMDB, mucho más bajo que sus otras películas. 

The film shows the poverty of Nepal, along with some of the beauty of the mountains. Bollaín isn’t as familiar with Nepal and its problems as she is Spain, so with the adage “write what you know”, the film wasn’t going to be as strong. She took a chance, and I think it worked. She continues with her focus on social realism, just transporting it to the world of Nepal. La película muestra la pobreza de Nepal, y también la belleza de los montes. Bollain no conoce Nepal y sus problemas tanto como conoce España, y si hace caso al dicho “escribir lo que ya conoces”, la película no iba a ser tan buena. Se arriesgó, y creo que le salió bien. Sigue con su estilo de realismo social, solo traslado al mundo de Nepal. 

It’s based on a real story, the experience of a Catalán teacher in Nepal named Victoria Subirana. Está basada en una historia real, la experiencia de una profesora catalana en Nepal, Victoria Subirana.

So originally this European adventure was going to be my hasta luego to Europe as I introduce my mom to some places she grew up reading about and dreaming of visiting. Immediately after my mom got the trip, I was offered my old job at a different school near València. So yay, I could stay in València, but I would be out of town for the month of November, and I would also have to find a new place to live (that place I found in August did not work out for reasons I’m not going into here!) El plan original de esta aventura europea era mi “hasta luego” a Europa mientras enseño a mi madre unos sitios que siempre de que ha leído y ha soñado visitar. Justo después de la compra del viaje de mi madre, me ofrecían la oportunidad de volver a mi antiguo trabajo pero en un instituto diferente cerca de València. Muy bien. Puedo quedarme en València, pero estaré fuera de València durante todo el mes de noviembre. También tendré que encontrar un sitio nuevo para vivir (el sitio que encontré en agosto no me iba bien para razones de que no quiero hablar.)

My mom arrived on Nov. 1 to València. It was great to see her, and I had so much planned. What she didn’t tell me is she had fallen in the Lisbon airport and was barely able to walk. Mi madre llegó el día 1 de noviembre a València. Estaba bien verla, y tenía mucho planificado. Pero no me dijo que se cayó en el aeropuerto de Lisboa y apenas podía caminar. 

All my plans to show her my beloved home of València had fallen through. I tried to see some of the most famous places by myself with a fresh pair of eyes, but the city just felt too much like home. It’s the third largest city in Spain with around 800,000 residents in the city centre and about 1.5 million in the urban area. It’s famous for paella, ortxata, oranges, the Ciutat de les Artes i Ciencies, Bioparc, the beaches and Falles. Oh yeah! I can sell my city. Todos los planes que tenía para mostrarle mi hogar querido de València estaban en el aire. Intenté ver los sitios famosos valencianos yo solo con una mirada de alguien que nunca había visto la ciudad, pero la ciudad es mi hogar. Es la tercera ciudad española con una población de 800.000 habitantes en el centro de la ciudad y 1.5 millones de habitantes en la zona metropolitana. Es conocido por paella, ortxata, naranjas, la Ciudad de Artes y Ciencias, Bioparc, sus playas y las Falles. Pues sí, se vender mi ciudad. 

We are continuing on the trip as planned, but not at all as planned. The next stop would be Milano. She always had dreams of seeing Il Duomo which she loved to draw pictures of as a child. We needed to get special assistance as soon as I saw how bad off she was once we arrived to the Valencia airport on Friday. We arrived to Milan in one peace, but the trip would be nothing like I had spent weeks planning for her…Estamos intentando seguir el viaje como planificado pero a la misma vez no como planificado. La próxima parada era Milano. Siempre soñaba con ver Il Duomo. Cuando era niña le encantaba dibujar la catedral milanes. Cuando llegamos al aeropuerto, tuvimos que pedir asistencia cuando vi que la pobre no pudo caminar bien. Llegamos a Milán bien, pero el viaje no iba como el viaje que trabajé durante semanas planificando por ella.

Spanish director Icíar Bollaín continues with her look at social problems with Spain by tackling domestic abuse in the 2003 film Te doy mis ojos (Take My Eyes). Directora española Icíar Bollaín sigue con su mirada en los problemas sociales de España. Esta vez toca el problema grave de violencia de género con la película de 2003 Te doy mis ojos. 

The film begins with Pilar (Laia Marull) leaving her home with her seven-year-old son, Juan (Nicolás Fernández Luna) in the middle of the night, running away to her sister Ana’s (Candela Peña). Pilar is determined to start her life over again away from her abusive husband, Antonio (Luis Tosar). La película empieza con Pilar (Laia Marull) huyendo de su casa con su hijo Juan (Nicolás Fernández Luna), quien tiene solo 7 añitos, por la noche. Están yendo a la casa de su hermana Ana (Candela Peña). Pilar es determinada empezar su vida desde cero, lejos de su marido abusivo, Antonio (Luis Tosar). 

Pilar’s mom, Aurora (the impeccable Rosa Maria Sardà), is traditional and feels her daughter needs a man. She invites Antonio to Juan’s birthday party, and Antonio explains that he’s in therapy to overcome his abusive nature. He slowly starts to win her back, trying to show that he has changed. But can he change? Things are pushed to the limits as Pilar becomes more independent, which threatens Antonio’s sense of masculinity. I won’t give spoilers, but I will say that the film is a very realistic look at the domestic abuse problem in Spain. La madre de Pilar, Aurora (la increíble Rosa Maria Sardà) es tradicional y cree que su hija necesita un hombre en su vida. Aurora invita a Antonio al cumpleaños de Juan. Antonio explica que está yendo a terapia para superar su naturaleza abusiva. Poco a poco gana el corazón de Pilar de nuevo, intentando mostrarle que ha cambiado. ¿Pero puede cambiar? La situación está al limite cuando Pilar intenta hacerse más independiente, que es una amenaza al sentido de masculinidad de Antonio. No voy a dar ningún spoiler, pero voy a decir que la película es una exploración realista del problema de violencia de género en España.

I remember hearing about this film as it was released when I was studying in Toledo in university, where the film takes place. I saw it in maybe 2004 or 2005, and I’m not sure I finished it. It is a very tough film to watch about a very important issue. Recuerdo que me dijo que debería ver la película cuando estaba estudiando en Toledo porque tiene lugar en Toledo. Creo que la vi en 2004 o 2005, y no estoy seguro que la terminé. Es una película bastante dura pero es tema muy importante. 

Bollaín makes some terrific directing choices, showing the audience why it is so difficult for a woman to leave an abusive husband. She shows the husband trying to change. Tosar wasn’t as famous in 2003 as he is now, but one could argue by chosing a known actor for the film puts a face to a gigantic problem facing Spain today. Bolláin hace un esfuerzo tremendo, mostrando el público porque es tan difícil para una mujer dejarle a un marido abusivo. Muestra el marido intentando cambiar. Tosar no era tan famoso en 2003 como es hoy en día, pero uno puede decir que por elegir un actor conocido pone cara a un problema gigante en España hoy en día. 

The film could come off as a “Lifetime movie of the week”, but it rises above to expore the problem. Con una peor directora, sería nada más de una película hecha por televisión. En las manos de Bollaín, es una película seria que explora un problema gordo. 

Te doy mis ojos won seven Goyas in 2004, including Best Picture, Best Director and three acting awards (Marull, Tosar and Peña). Bollaín co-wrote the script with Alicia Luna. Te doy mis ojos ganó siete Goyas en 2004, incluyendo Mejor Película, Mejor director y tres premios por los actores Marull, Tosar y Peña. Bollaín escribió el guión con Alicia Luna. 

It’s not a fun, Friday-night Netflix and chill type of movie. It’s a movie that will open your eyes to the horrors of domestic abuse and is another great example of Bollaín’s social-realism film making. No es una película divertida para una noche de plan relax con Netflix. Es una película que puede abrirte los ojos a los horrores de violencia de género y es otro ejemplo genial de las películas de realismo-social de Bollaín.

Six-month extension.

I was in the midst of planning my future when an opportunity to stay in València for six more months fell into my lap. I’ve decided to take it, but all plans for grad school stay in place. I took the GRE with success in the verbal and not embarassingly bad on the maths section last week in Barcelona.

Estaba intentando planificar mi futuro cuando una oportunidad de quedarme en València durante seis meses más me salió. He decidido aprovecharlo, pero sigo planificando hacer un máster el próximo curso. Hice el examen de GRE, una mierda de examen que tiene que hacer para hacer un máster en EEUU. Me salió superbien la parte de verbal, de vocabulario y lectura…y no hice horrible la marte de matemáticas. Tenía que ir a Barcelona para hacerlo la semana pasada.

Now…stay tuned these next few weeks as I tour Europe with my mom. Valencia, to Italia to Greece to Barcelona to the Basque Country to Paris to Andalucía. It’ll be a whirlwind tour.

Ahora, a continuación las próximas semanas mientras viajo por Europa con mi madre. València a Italia a Grecia a Barcelona al País vasco a París a Andalucía. Será una locura de viaje.

Sagunt(o) is one of the most famous towns in the Comunitat Valenciana due to its castle and Roman ruins. The town of 64,439 residents (2016 statistics) dates back to before 219 BC, when it was the Roman city Saguntum.  Sagunto (Sagunt en valenciano) es uno de los pueblos más famosos de la Comunidad Valenciana dado a su castillo y ruinas romanas. El pueblo de 64.439 habitantes (según estadísticas de 2016) ha existido desde antes de 219 a.C, cuando era la ciudad romana Saguntum. 

Today the town boasts of a castle and of a Roman theatre that was restored last century. I had the opportunity to see a performance in the Roman theatre in 2011 that was rather interesting. Hoy en día el pueblo tiene un castillo y un teatro romano que fue restuardo en Siglo XX. Tenía la oportunidad ver una obra de teatro allí en 2011 que fue interesante. 

I needed to get out, and I’ve been wanting to return to the town, so I did exactly like that the last Sunday of October. Sagunt (valenciano, Sagunto in Spanish) is 23 kilometres/14 miles north of Valencia, and several Cercanías trains connect the town with Valencia in only a half an hour. Necesitaba escaparme un rato de València, y quería volver al pueblo. Por eso, fui el último domingo de octubre. Sagunt está a 23 kilómetros al norte de València, y hay bastantes trenes de Cercanías que une el pueblo con València en solo media hora. 

After exploring the town a bit, I went up the hill to visit the theatre and the castle. There were a lot more tourists than I remember on previous visits, but it was a warm Sunday morning in October. People wanted to be out and about. Después de explorar el pueblo un rato, subí la colina para visitar el teatro y castillo. Había muchos más turistas que recordaba en las visitas anteriores, pero era un domingo por la mañana con buen tiempo en el mes de octubre. La gente quería salir y estar afuera. 

I discovered a “Ruta Ibera” that went around the castle to a beautiful look out. It was much more quiet than the castle and theatre. I needed the nature, and I was glad to have discovered it. Descubrí una “Ruta Ibera” que fue alredador el castillo hasta un mirador precioso. Era mucho más tranquilo que el castillo y teatro. Me hice falta la natura, y me alegro haber descubierto la ruta. 

Sagunt is definitely one of my favourite Valencian villages. Sagunt es uno de mis pueblos preferidos de la Comunitat Valenciana.
