Santa María de Naranco

I had to go to Oviedo to pick up my visa ID card, so I made an adventure of it, of course. Tenía que ir a Oviedo para coger mi TIE (DNI de extranjeros), y lo convertí a una aventura, desde luego.

After stopping in Santander along the way (as there are no direct buses between Valencia and Asturias that I know of) and seeing a beautiful sunrise, I caught a BlaBlaCar to Oviedo. Después de parar en Santander por el camino, como no hay un autobús directo entre València y Asturias, que yo sepa) y ver un amanecer precioso, cogí un BlaBlaCar hasta Oviedo.

Some of my favourite places to visit in Oviedo include the Santa María de Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo churches above the city on Monte Naranco. They were finished in the 9th century. There is something spiritual about them. Cuando voy a Oviedo, me encanta visitar las iglesias de Santa María de Naranco y San Miguel de Lillo en el Monte Naranco.

After checking into my pensión, I decided to revisit them and hike to the monuments. It’s about 3 kilometres from the city centre, and a perfect way to celebrate El Día de la Hispanidad, Oct. 12, when it still felt like summer all over the greatest peninsula in the world. Después de dejar mis cosas en la pensión, decidí ir a verlas de nuevo y caminar a los momumentos. Son unos 3 kilómetros del centro de la ciudad, y creo que era una manera perfecto para celebrar El Día de la Hispanidad, el 12 de octubre, cuando todavía se sentía verano en toda la mejor península del mundo.

I had previously done the hike in 2012, and I don’t think I went quite the same way. I know that back then, I didn’t have an iPad or the Google Maps app (I was on my first Smart Phone then!), and I don’t remember exactly how I arrived. Ya había hecho esta ruta una vez antes, en 2012, y creo que fui una ruta distinta. No sé como llegué como no tenía ni un iPad ni el app de Google Maps (tenía mi primer SmartPhone en 2012).

This time I barely needed the app. I just figured it out. It took about 45 minutes, and the views were beautiful as always. Lots of people had the same idea I did. Esta vez, apenas usé Google Maps y no me perdí. La subida era unos 45 minutos, y las vistas eran bonitas, como siempre. Mucha gente tenía la misma idea que yo.

Sometimes it’s okay to repeat hikes when the places are this special. A veces está bien repetir rutas cuando los sitios son tan especiales.

The 1999 film Flowers from Another World by Spanish director Iciár Bollaín is a realistic look at the bleak life in España Profunda at the end of the 20th century. La película de 1999 Flores de otro Mundo de directora española Icíar Bollaín es una mirada real en la vida sombría en España Profunda al final del Siglo XX.

In the small village Santa Eulalia in Guadalajara, the single men are lonely and their prospects of finding a woman to marry are slim. They have an annual party where a bus full of single women looking for love or immigration papers come to town to meet and greet the single men in hopes of a spark. This year, the women include Marirrosi (Elena Irureta), a divorced nurse from Bilbao, the capital of the world, Patricia (Lissete Mejía), a Domincan mother in Spain illegaly, and Milady (Marilyn Torres), a young Cuban wanting to explore the world. En el pueblo pequeño Santa Eulalia en Guadalajara, los hombres solteros se sienten solos y sus prospectivas de conocer una mujer para casarse son pocas. Hay una fiesta anual donde un autóbus llena de solteras buscando amor o papeles de inmigración vienen para conocer los solteros, esperando una chispa. Patricia meets Damian (Luis Tosar), and settles into life with him and his mother. His mother is racist and doesn’t like the fact her son wants to marry an immigrant and makes Patricia’s life hell. Patricia already has enough problems trying to change her legal status in Spain. Patricia conoce a Damian (Luis Tosar) y empieza una vida con él en la casa de su madre. Su madre es racista y no le gusta nada el hecho que su hijo quiere casarse con una inmigrante. Crea muchos problemas para Patricia. Patricia ya tenía bastantes problemas intentando cambiar su estatus legal en España.

Marirrosi meets Alfonso (Chete Lera), and the two begin a long-distance relationship. Can a city-girl and a country-boy find middle ground? Marirrosi conoce a Alfonso (Chete Lera), y los dos empiezan una relación a distancia. ¿Puede encontrar una manera de mezclar la vida de una chica de la ciudad y la vida de un chico del pueblo?

Milady is a free spirit, and she has problems settling in with Carmelo (José Sancho) and living in a small town. After she hitches a ride with a truck driver to Valencia, he beats her and she yearns to escape the village and the man. Milady es un espíritu libre, y tiene problemas con vivir en la casa de Carmelo (José Sancho) y vivir en un pueblo tan pequeño. The film has its basis on reality, as sometimes these “caravans of women” do go to villages in rural Spain. (Or did, I’ve never heard of one outside this film.) La película era inspirada de la realidad, como estas caravanas de mujeres a veces van a pueblos en España profunda.

It’s a fantastic look at life in rural Spain, the “España profunda” the city folk like to joke about. It looks at the loneliness and the desolation of the villages. Many Spanish villages are in danger of disappearing due to the mass exodus to the cities in the second half of the 20th century. Es una mirada fantástica de la vida en España profunda. Mira la soledad y la desolación de estos pueblos. Muchos pueblos españoles están en peligro de desaparecer dado a todos yendo a vivir en las ciudades en la segunda parte del Siglo XX.

It also examines the harsh reality of being an immigrant in Spain. I really felt for Patricia’s fight to find a job and get her papers in order. Her speech toward the end of the film about the catch 22 of needing residency to find a job but a job to have residency hit home. También mira la realidad dura de ser un(a) inmigrante en España. Me senti mucho la lucha de Patricia de encontrar un trabajo y arreglar los papeles. Su discurso en la última media hora de la película sobre necesitar residencia para encontrar trabajo pero necesitar un trabajo para tener residencia es la verdad de vivir en España.

Bollaín’s films have a reputation of being realistic, and sometimes realism is a bit tough to swallow. We’re not going to have a man seeing a chicken walking through the room at 2:00 a.m. (Buñuel), men hanging off the Schweppes sign in Madrid (Álex de la Iglesia), or Andrea Caracortada, con lo peor del día (Almodóvar) here. We’re going to have the gritty reality of life, the good and the bad. Las películas de Bollaín tienen fama de ser muy realistas y a veces el realismo es duro. No vamos a ver un gallo pasa la habitación de un hombre a las 2 de la mañana (Buñuel), hombres colgando del edificio de Schweppes en Madrid (Álex de la Iglesia) o Andrea Caracortada, con lo peor del día (Almodóvar) aquí. Vamos a ver la realidad cruda de la vida, lo bueno y lo malo.

I originally saw this film in my Spanish Cinema class in 2007, and it always stuck with me. I still remembered Milady’s American flag trousers and the scenes of the village when I watched it a second time. I understood the film on a whole new level after living in Spain for 9 years and seeing some of these rural Spanish villages. La vi por la primera vez en 2007 en mi clase de cine español, y siempre lo recordaba. Recordaba los pantalones de Milady de la bandera estadounidense y recordaba las escenas del pueblo asilado cuando la vi por la segunda vez. Esta vez, entendí la película de una manera distinta después de vivir en España durante 9 años y ver algunos de esos pueblos de España profunda.

The town “Cantalojas” served as the fictional Sta. Eulalia. El pueblo “Cantalojas” sirvió como el pueblo ficticio Sta. Eulalia.

Una mañana en la otra Guadalajara.

I’ve always been curious about the capital city of Guadalajara, population 84,803. Everyone always talks about Segovia, Toledo, Ávila and even Cuenca, but Guadalajara flies under the radar. It doesn’t have any hanging houses, it doesn’t have three cultures, and there is no aqueduct or alcázar to boast of. However, it does have its charm. Siempre he tenido una curiosidad de Guadalajara capital, población 84.803. Todo el mundo habla de Segovia, Toledo, Ávila y incluso Cuenca, pero nadie conoce Guadalajara. Ni tiene casas colgantes, ni tiene tres culturas, ni tiene acueducto para atraer visitantes. Sin embargo, tiene su encanto.

I’d been to the province a few times, to Sigüenza, to the Pueblos Negros and for a hiking excursion, but I’d never made it to the capital. While I was in Madrid in August, I decided to visit the city to see what it’s like. Había visitado la provincia unas veces. Ya conocí Sigüenza, los Pueblos Negros y también hice una excursión de senderismo allí, pero nunca había ido a la capital. Mientras estaba en Madrid en agosto, decidí visitar la ciudad para ver como es.

It was a hot day in the middle of August, and I felt the heat every second. I caught Cercanías from Recoletos in Madrid. The journey to Guadalajara takes about an hour, and the station is about 1.5 kilometres from the city centre. Era un día caluroso de medias de agosto, y sentí el calor cada segundo. Cogí el Cercanías de Recoletos en Madrid. El viaje tarda sobre una hora, y la estación está a unos 1,5 kilómetros del centro de la ciudad.

The city has some quaint churches and the River Henares adds to the experience. The co-Cathedral Santa María is another highlight. La ciudad tiene muchas iglesias pintorescas y la Ría Henares añade a la experiencia. La co-catedral Santa María es otra cosa que hay que ver.

My plan was to stop in the more famous Alcalá de Henares, birthplace of Cervantes, but due to the heat and the fact I had been there once before, I decided to seek air conditioning before the afternoon. The Spanish Guadalajara may not be as famous as the Mexican one, but it has its charm and would be a great day trip combined with Alcalá de Henares for Madrid visitors to discover a different Spain. La Guadalajara española no tiene la fama de la Guadalajara mexicana, pero tiene su encanto y sería una buena excursión combinado con Alcalá de Henares para los turistas de Madrid quien quiere ver una España diferente.

Parajes de Gaibiel.

Gaibiel seems to be a small, inconsequential village of 205 residents located in the comarca of Alta Palancia in the province of Castellón, a mere 68.1 kilometres (42.3 miles) northwest of València. It is home of a castle on Monte Ajedrea that is a Bien de Interés Cultural. Gaibiel parece ser un pueblo pequeño sin importancia. Tiene 205 habitantes y pertenece a la comarca de Alta Palancia en la provincia de Castellón, solo a 68,1 kilómetros noroeste de València. Tiene un castillo en el Monte Ajedrea que es un Bien de Interés Cultural.

It’s also home of some spectacular hiking routes. On 21 October 2017, I went on an excursion with Samarucs, the LGBT+ sports club of Valencia, to the village to explore some of the routes. También tiene unas rutas de senderismo especatculares. El día 21 de octubre de 2017, fui en una excursión con Samarucs, el club deportivo LGBT+ de València, al pueblo para explorar algunas de sus rutas.

We met at the usual meeting point of Torres de Quart at 8. By 9:30 or so, we were in the small village at the bar in the main plaza, the one with the church, town hall and a unsual fountain with a woman with a goose. After a quick coffee, we were on the way to follow a circular route through the surrounding mountains. Quedamos en el punto de encuentro de siempre, los Torres de Quart, a las 8. A las 9.30, ya estábamos tomando un café en la Plaza Mayor, la plaza que tenía la iglesia, ayuntamiento y un fuente peculiar con una mujer con un ganso. While not actually part of the Natural Park Serra d’Espadán, it’s on the outskirts. The trail we followed took us down to a small pond where people used to swim when there were more people. The trail went up from there and around some mountains. In the distance we could see the village Jérica. Aunque la ruta no era parte del Parc Natural de Serra d’Espadán, está cerquita. La ruta que hicimos nos llevó a un embalse pequeño donde antes la gente se bañaba cuando el pueblo tenía más habitantes. El sendero sube desde el charco por la sierra. Podemos ver el pueblo Jérica en la distancia.

The trail passed some electrical wires (cuidado) on the way down to the castle. The castle is one of more impressive ones I’ve seen this year. We continued on to an ermita. Nearby, there was a pavilion near a fountain where we rested and ate. El sendero pasó unos cables eléctricos (cuidado) por la bajada al castillo. El castillo es uno de los más impresionantes he visto este año. Seguimos hasta una ermita. Cerca, había sitio para descansar y comer a lado de un fuente.

We continued on past the ermita (hermitage) through some forest. We had time to do the entire route, so we continued past a cave and up some more hills. The weather was unseasonably warm, even for Valencia, a region known for its “caloret”, which made the hike a bit harder than it normally would be. Seguimos y pasamos la hermita para caminar por el bosque. Nos daba tiempo para hacer la ruta completa. Pasábamos una cueva y subimos más. Hacía bastante calor para ser octubre, incluso para València, una región conocido por su “caloret”, y por eso, la ruta nos costaba un poco más que normal.

For me, the highlight of the hike, outside the castle, was Sta. Barbará, a refuge just outside Gaibiel. Para mi, lo mejor de la ruta, después del castillo, era Sta. Barbará, un refugio en las afueras de Gaibiel.

After arriving back to the village, we had time for a drink before heading back to València. It was another super hike with Samarucs. Looking forward to the next! Después de volver al pueblo, tomamos algo en el mismo para antes de volver a València. Era otra gran ruta con Samarucs y ¡me da ilusión para ir a la próxima!

Camino de Requena Etapa 4: Bunyol-Siete Aguas

I wanted ONE more day on the Camino de Requena, which leads to the Camino de la Lana Camino de Santiago (how many times can I write “Camino” in a single sentence? More in Spanish), and although I wanted to arrive to Requena, I’m quite happy with finishing in Siete Aguas. Quería UN día más en el Camino de Requena, que va hacía el Camino de la Lana Camino de Santiago (¿Cuantas veces puedo escribir “camino” en una sola frase? Aún más en castellano que inglés). Aunque quería llegar a Requena, estoy bastante contento con llegar en Siete Aguas.

I made my way to the Estación de San Isidro, which I prefer leaving from as it cuts out a few stops that take forever, and I caught the train that leaves at 8:07. I was sad they had taken out the coffee machine, so when I arrived to Buñol around 9, I found an open café right away. Fui hasta la Estacion de San Isidro. Siempre prefiero salir de San Isidro porque corta dos paradas que tardan mucho tiempo. Cogí el tren que sale a las 8.07. Me puso triste porque habían quitado la máquina de café. Por eso, cuando llegué a Buñol sobre las 9, paré en el primer bar abierto que encontré.

In Bunyol, population just under 10,000 people, the arrows are there, but they’re not obvious. I had to stop once or twice to read the explanations from Editorial Buen Camino. It takes you straight to the castle, then down to the main plaza and out of town. After seeing some beautiful churches, I crossed the river and admired the views of the town as I climbed up the Sierra of Malacara, imagining what the town must look like during La Tomatina when everyone is throwing tomatoes. En Buñol, población un poco menos de 10.000 personas, hay flechas, si, pero no son muy obvios. Tenia que para un par de veces para leer las indicaciones de Editorial Buen Camino. El Camino va hacia el castillo de Buñol y baja a la plaza principal del pueblo y sale del pueblo. Most of the hike is on the trails through the mountains. The initial ascent is pretty steep, but after that, it levels out to be a peaceful walk. Early autumn was the perfect time to go. It was a bit warm, but not too hot. There were a few hikers and a few more bikers, but not many at all. La mayoria de la ruta es por senderos por los montes. La subida inicial tiene mucho pendiente, pero después, es un camino tranquilo. El inicio del otoño es la etapa perfecta para ir. Hizo un poco de calor, pero no demasiado. Había algunos senderistas y aún más ciclistas, pero no muchos.

The views were beautiful, and after the first ascent that made me curse the Camino, the other ascents and descents were a bit easier. There were just enough arrows not to get lost. I had read to just follow the main route for lack of arrows, and the directions served me well. Las vistas eran preciosas, y después de la primera subida donde maldije el Camino, las otras subidas y bajadas eran más fáciles. Había justo suficientes flechas para no perderme. Había leído seguir la ruta principal si no había flechas, y las direcciones me sirvieron bien.

At one point I had to cross under the highway and train tracks through tunnels. One was very dark with barely any light. I thought of it as an adventure. With a name like Siete Aguas, the village of 1223 inhabitants has always drawn my attention. I hadn’t been before. Con un nombre como Siete Aguas, el pueblo de 1223 habitantes siempre me ha llamado la atención.

It has a fountain with seven spouts for water in the centre of the village, and I drank from it, of course. Tiene un fuente con siete bocas de agua en el centro del pueblo. Desde luego, probé el agua.

I probably won’t have time to finish the route to Requena, but I have enjoyed the few days I have had on this lesser known Camino. No creo tener tiempo para terminar la ruta hasta Requena, pero he disfrutado los pocos días que he tenido en este Camino poco conocido.

After taking a look at three very important Spanish men directors (Pedro Almodóvar, Álex de la Iglesia and Luis Buñuel), I feel I need to promote a Spanish woman director. Después de explorar las obras de tres directores españoles importantes masculinos (Pedro Almodovar, Álex de la Iglesia y Luis Buñuel) creo que ya toca promocionar las obras de una directorA femenina.

However, as we know too well, women are unfortunately not given the same opportunities as men to succeed in this world. It’s a travesty. Finding a Spanish woman director in the machismo Spanish world isn’t the easiest, even if there’s a fantastic list of 132 Spanish directors. Sin embargo, como ya sabemos bastante, lamentablemente las mujeres no tienen las mismas oportunidades como los hombres para tener éxito en este mundo. Es una gran pena. Encontrar una director mujer en el mundo español de machismo no es nada fácil, aunque hay una lista fantástica de 132 directoras españolas.

I was debating between Isabel Coixet and Icíar Bollaín for my next project, and I chose Icíar Bollaín because I prefer her films and her films are more Spanish. Coixet tends to directs in English with English-speaking actors, which is a fantastic opportunity for any Spanish director, male or female. Bollaín directs films about Spain in Spanish. As my blog is about Spain, I am going with Bollaín. Estaba considerando o Isabel Coixet o Icíar Bollaín para el próximo proyecto. Elegí Icíar Bollain porque creo que hace mejores películas y sus películas son más españolas. Coixet suele hacer películas en ingles con actores que son nativos de inglés, que es una gran oportunidad para cualquier director o directora español(a). Bollaín hacer películas sobre España en español. Como mi blog es sobre España, he elegido Bollain.

Icíar Bollaín Pérez-Mínguez was born in Madrid on 12 June 1967. She has a twin, Marina, who is an opera singer. When she was 14, she appeared in Victor Erice’s El Sur and appeared in various films in the late 80s and early 90s, including Ken Loach’s Spanish Civil War documentary Tierra y Libertad. When she was 23, she formed a production company La Iguana and made a few film shorts before directing her first film Hola, ¿Estás sola? in 1995. Icíar Bollaín Pérez-Mínguez nació en Madrid el 12 de junio de 1967. Tiene una gemela, Marina, quien es una cantante de ópera. Cuando tenía 14 años, apareció en El Sur de Victor Erice. Piedras Blancas to Salinas (Asturias)

Peregrinos along the Camino del Norte always have options, depending on if they want a shorter day (along the road, no detours), the coastal way or the mountain way. As there is an private albergue in Salinas just past Avilés, many peregrinos make their way to the coastal town. As I stayed in Avilés, I missed the town of 4635 residents, making my way through an inland path. The two paths meet up again in Piedras Blancas, population 9544. Siempre hay opciones para los peregrinos que hacen el Camino del Norte, depende si quieren un día más corto (siempre por la carretera sin desavíos), caminando siempre por la costa o caminando siempre por los montes. Hay un albergue en Salinas justo después de Avilés, y muchos peregrinos eligen ir hasta Salinas para dormir allí. Como me alojé en Avilés, perdí el pueblo de 4635 habitantes, caminando por una senda por el interior. Las dos sendas unen en Piedras Blancas, población 9544.

A few weeks later, I found myself at a friend’s house in Piedras Blancas while I was doing some more visa paperwork in Asturias. One afternoon was sunny, so I decided to walk to the beach in Salinas. Unas semanas después, me encontré en la casa de un amigo en Piedras Blancas mientras estaba haciendo más papeleo en Asturias. Una tarde era asoleado, y decidí caminar hasta la playa en Salinas.

The walk was along the main road, and I remembered where I arrived to Piedras Blancas on the Camino. Such good times. It was only about 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) so I arrived in no time at all to the beach, which is one of the longest in Asturias. La ruta era por la carretera principal, y vi donde llegué a Piedras Blancas por el Camino. Ay, esas tiempos buenos…Solo era unos 2 kilómetros hasta la playa, y no tardé nada en llegar a la playa, que es una de las playas más largas de Asturias.

There is an interesting “museum” of anchors, and a statue of sorts on the rocks of Jacques Costeau’s son. The views were spectacular. I walked, climbing a few of the rock formations, and then headed to the next beach, Arnao, before walking back to Piedras Blancas. Hay un “museo” interesante de anclas y una estatua del hijo de Jacques Costeau (si puedo llamarla “estatua”) en las rocas. Las vistas eran impresionantes. Caminí, subiendo algunas de las formaciones de roca, y fui hasta la próxima playa, Arnao, antes de volver a Piedras Blancas.

It was a great short hike, for #29 of 2017. Era una buena ruta corta para el #29 de 2017.

Gracias a Rutas Trazadas por nominar SetMeravelles por este premio. Esta vez voy a dejar la explanación en español, como he recibido la nominación en español 🙂 Mis preguntas en inglés.

LOS PREMIOS

Los Liebster Awards son unos premios que existen únicamente en el internet y consiste en otorgar el premio a varios blogs que te gusten para así promoverlos y darles mayor exposición. Estos awards llevan rodando por el internet desde el 2011 y yo apenas me enteré a principios de este año que existían.

Mis preguntas son:
1. ¿Cuál fue tu primer viaje? Creo que tenía 2 semanas cuando mi madre me llevó a ver su familia en Kentucky. El primer viaje que recuerdo era cuando tenía 3 o 4 y fuimos a la playa de Virginia, Virginia Beach. Viajaba mucho cuando era un niño. What was your first trip? I think I was 2 weeks old when my mom took me to see her family in Kentucky. The first trip I remember was to Virginia Beach when I was 3 or 4. I travelled a lot as a child.

2. ¿Qué tipo de hospedería prefieres: hotel, hostal o apartamento y por qué? Depende. Ojalá tuviera la pasta para pagar un hotel. Suelo alojarme en una pensión o AirBNB. La pensión por precio y no ser albergue. Me gusta la privacidad. Los AirBNBs están de moda, y me gusta conocer gente del lugar que estoy visitando. What type of housing do you prefer: hotel, B&B, flat and why? It depends. I wish I had the money for posh hotels. I usually stay in a pensión (similar to B&B) or AirBNB. The pensión for the cheaper price that isn’t a youth hostel. I like privacy. AirBNBs are popular at the moment, and I like to meet people from the place I’m visiting.

3. ¿En cual país/ciudad has probado la mejor comida del mundo y que fue eso que comiste? Sin duda la mejor gastronomía está en Euskadi, (el País vasco). No puedo comer mariscos pero hay pintxos de todo. Mi comida preferida es paella valenciana (paella mixta no es paella. Es arroz con cosas.) También me gusta mucho la comida italiana, y siempre cuando viajo a Italia como mucho y muy bien. In which country or city have you tried the best food in the world and what was it that you ate? Without a doubt the best food is in the Basque Country. I can’t eat seafood, but there are pintxos made from everything. My favourite food is Valencian paella (Mixta isn’t paella. It’s rice with things.) I also like Italian food a lot, and whenever I travel to Italy I eat a lot and eat well.

4. ¿Qué tipo de viaje disfrutas más: tren, avión, barco o auto? Si puedo conducir, un coche. Hago muchos viajes con BlaBlaCar, un app para compartir coche. Me gusta mucho viajar en tren también. El avión no me gusta mucho pero a veces es necesario. Suelo viajar mucho en autobús, el nombre de los guaguas en España 🙂 What type of trip do you enjoy most: train, plane, boat or car? If I can drive myself, by car. I do a lot of trips with BlaBlaCar, an app for ridesharing. I also like travelling by train. I’m not a fan of planes, but sometimes it’s a necessary evil. I travel a lot by bus.

5. ¿Cuál es el viaje más reciente que has hecho y cuál es el próximo? El viaje mas reciente era con Samarucs a la Selva de Irati. El próximo será por Europa con mi madre con destinos: Italia, Grecia, París y muchos sitios en la mejor península del mundo. Ay, espera. La semana que viene he de hacer un examen en Barcelona, pero Barcelona es como mi casa. What is the most recent trip you’ve gone on and what is the next one? The most recent one was the trip with Samarucs to the Selva de Irati. The next one will be a European trip with my mom to Italy, Greece, Paris and a lot of places around the Greatest Peninsula in the World. Oh. Wait. Next week I have to take the GRE in Barcelona, but BCN is my second home.

6. ¿Cuál ciudad/estado/provincia/pueblo/condado de tu país me recomendarías visitar? De EEUU, Seattle. De mi segundo país, recomiendo: San Sebastián-Donostia, Bilbao, Barcelona, Granada, València, la comunidad autónoma de Asturias. Y Tenerife. No puedo elegir solo un sitio de España. My favourite city in the US is Seattle. Of my adopted country, I recommend San Sebastián-Donostia, Bilbao, Barcelona, Granada, Valencia, and the autonomous community of Asturias. And Tenerife. I can’t choose just one place in Spain.

7. ¿Tienes algún pasatiempo además de viajar?

Senderismo, escribir, leer, cine, series (Twin Peaks, Riverdale, House of Cards, Merlí y Jane the Virgin son mis series del año 2017) In my free time, I like to hike, write, read, movies and series. (Twin Peaks, Riverdale, House of Cards, Merlí and Jane the Virgin son mis series de 2017.

8. ¿Cuándo viajas en avión, prefieres el asiento del pasillo, el del medio o ventana?

Soy de ventana, siempre. I’m always a window seat.

9. ¿Te gusta pasar la temporada navideña viajando o prefieres pasarla en tu ciudad o país junto a la familia? Viajando…suelo viajar a EEUU para visitar mi familia de hecho..Travelling! I usually travel to the US at Christmas to visit my family actually.

10. ¿Eres más de museos o más de parques? Parques. Me aburro la mayoría de museos. Prefiero pasear por las calles y conocer la ciudad de esta manera. Parks. The majority of museums bore me. I prefer meandering the streets and discovering a city that way.

Buscando un basajuan en la Selva de Irati.

For years now, I’ve been on a quest to find beautiful fall foilage in Spain. It always seemed the leaves fell off the trees green to me. Autumn is my favourite season, and so I have always missed this aspect living in cities like Bilbao and València. Llevo años buscando las hojas bonitas del otoño en España. Siempre me parece que las hojas se caen de los árboles verdes. El otoño es mi estación preferida, y siempre echo de menos el cambio de las hojas viviendo en ciudades como Bilbao y València.

I first heard about the Selva de Irati while living in Bilbao, but despite it being pretty high on my bucket list, I never had the opportunity to go while living there despite the proximity. Cuando viví en Bilbao, muchos me dijeron del Selva de Irati, pero aunque tenía muchas ganas visitarla, no tenía la oportunidad visitar el bosque mientras estaba viviendo allí aunque está bastante cerca.

I’ve also been fascianted with the Basque mythological creature, el basajuan, who is supposed to be something of a Yeti covered in moss and helps lost people find their way. I’ve never seen one, but I’ve alwayed hoped one would help me out. Siempre me ha fascinado la figura de mitología vasca, el basajuan. Dice que es tipo Yeti que está cubierto en musgo y ayuda a la gente perdida por el bosque. Nunca he visto uno, pero siempre he esperado uno echarme una mano cuando estaba perdido por el monte vasco.

This year, I finally got my chance to look for both. Samarucs, the LGBT+ sports club of València, organised a trip to the famous forest during the Valèncian bank holiday of Oct. 9. Este año, por fin tenía la oportunidad. Samarucs, el LGBT+ club deportivo de València, tenía un fin de semana de senderismo planificado a la selva famosa durante el puente de la Comunitat Valenciana de 9 de octubre.

On Friday afternoon, most of us left from Torres of Quart and made our way to the Navarra village of Ochagavia, population 543. Ochagavia is located close to France in the extreme northeast of Navarra. The journey took about six hours with a few stops. El viernes por la tarde, la mayoría de nosotros salimos de Torres de Quart y fuimos hasta el pueblo navarro de Ochagavia, población 543. Ochagavia está ubicado cerca de Francia en el extremo noreste de Navarra. El viaje tardó sobre seis horas con algunas paradas por el camino.

We stayed in bungalows at the Camping Osate. The bungalows were small but had everything we needed. Nos alojamos en bungalows en el Camping Osate. Los bungalows eran pequeños pero tenía todo lo que necesitamos.

Saturday morning, after breakfast, we set out early at 8:30 to Casas de Irati. It’s about 40 minutes from Ochagavia. The forest is famous for its beech trees and has inspired many legends. The access road was only built in 1960. It’s known throughout Spain but has been kept a secret from the tourists invading Barcelona, Benidorm and the Camino Francés. El sábado por la mañana, después de desayunar, salimos pronto a las 8.30 para ir a las Casas de Irati. El viaje es sobre 40 minutos desde Ochagavia. La selva es famosa por sus hayas y ha inspirado muchas leyendas. La carretera de acceso fue construido en el año 1960. Es conocido por España pero todavía es un secreto que los turistas que invaden Barcelona, Benidorm y el Camino Frances.

We left the parking, which costs 5€ normally, and set out for the Cascadas del Cubo (Bucket Falls just doesn’t sound right in English, nor Cube Falls.) A family ahead of us had a golden retriever, which anyone who knows me knows my love for this special animal. Empezamos la ruta en el parking, que normalmente cuesta 5€, y fuimos hasta las Cascadas del Cubo. Había una familia que iba adelante de nosotros que tenía un golden retriever. Todos que me conocen ya conocen mi amor por este animal tan especial.

The falls were spectacular. We took a ton of photos and continued on the way. Right now, I have to say kudos to the guides who were trying their best with the GPS system. How many times did I lose myself in Euskadi trying to follow Wikiloc? (Every time.) The trail wasn’t marked well. We made it up the mountain Lizadoria, 1200 metres (3937 feet). The views were beautiful, and we had our morning snack there. Las cascadas eran espectaculares. Hicimos muchas fotos y seguimos el sendero. Ahora mismo, he de agradecer los guías quien intentaron y hicieron bien con el GPS. ¿Cuántas veces me perdí en Euskadi intentando seguir el Wikiloc? (Cada vez que intenté). La ruta no estaba señalado bien. Subimos el monte Lizadoria (1200 metros de altura). Las vistas eran impresionantes y almorzamos allí.

Later, we followed the trail down. Many people picked mushrooms, which on record does require a special permit. The mountain was pretty steep. Después, seguimos la ruta para bajar. Muchos iban “seteando” (¿Una palabra inventada o real? coger setas). Hay un permiso especial que se puede sacar en 2 minutos si quieres coger setas. El monte tenía bastante pendiente.

After passing a clearing, we found ourselves on a much better path that was flat to lead us to the Embalse de Irabia. The forest was beautiful, and the leaves were just starting their autumn change. The river and pond were beautiful, but the trees blocked the view from the main path. Después de llegar a un collado, había un sendero mucho mejor que era plano que nos llevó al Embalse de Irabia. La selva era preciosa, y el follaje estaban empezando a cambiar a sus colores del otoño. El río y embalse eran bonitos, aunque los árboles bloquean las vistas desde la senda principal.

We had lunch at a farmhouse near the river. The picnic prepared by the camping for 5€ was well worth it. Comemos a lado de una casa de granja cerca del río. El picnic preparado por el camping por solo 5€ valía el precio.

It was about another hour to reach the parking through more beautiful forest. We stopped at the bar before heading back to Ochagavia. In the afternoon, most people explored the village. Tardó una hora más para llegar al parking, paseando por más bosque bonito. Paramos en el bar de Casas de Irati antes de volver a Ochagavia. Por la tarde, la mayoría exploraron el pueblo.

Dinner was included at the camping. La cena fue incluido en el alojamiento.

Two routes awaited us on Sunday. The first began at the Fábrica de Armas de Orbaizeta. The factory was in ruins, but it was beautiful. It was only about 10 kilometres (6 miles) from Roncevalles, where the Camino Francés kicks off its Iberian leg. Dos rutas nos esperabamos el domingo. La primera empezó en la Fábrica de Armas de Orbaizeta. La fábrica estaba en ruinas, pero era bonita. Está a solo unos 10 kilómetros de Roncevalles, donde el Camino Frances empieza su trayecto español.

The route was just as beautiful. We crossed a river on a basic bridge and hiked up another mountain. There were caves and castle ruins. Those who braved the steep climb to the castle were rewarded with beautiful views of the mountain. La ruta era muy bonito también. Cruzamos un río en un puente básico y subimos otro monte que tenía cuevas y ruinas de un castillo. Los que nos encontramos fuertes para subir hasta el castillo eramos premiados con vistas bonitas del monte.

We had lunch in the village of Garaoia at the restaurant Ibarraetxea. We ate quite well for 20€, which in the Basque region is pretty cheap. Being in the Basque country, the food was excellent. Comemos en el pueblo de Garaoia en el restuarante Ibarraetxea. Comemos muy bien por 20€, que es bastante barato en cualquier sitio del Euskal Herria. Como Navarra forma parte del Euskal Herria, la comida estaba riquísimo.

The second hike started in Abaurrea Baja and was a circular route up a mountain that supposedly only had 200 metres of height change. The forest was amazing. Although everyone was tired, it was definitely worth it for the descent alone. La segunda ruta empezó en Abaurrea Baja y era circular. Subió un monte que dice que solo tenía 200 metros de desnivel. No lo creemos. La selva era increíble. Aunque todos estábamos cansados, valía la pena por la bajada preciosa.

Sunday we had another great dinner. Cenamos bien domingo también.

Monday was the return to Valencia. All good things come to an end. Most people stopped in the village of Olite to see its famous castle, which I had been to in 2010. It’s one of the most beautiful castles in Spain. Olite has a population of 3915 residents. El lunes era la vuelta a València. Siempre acaba lo bueno en esta vida. La mayoría paramos en el pueblo de Olite para visitar su castillo famoso. Ya había estado en 2010. Es uno de los castillos más bonitos de España. Olite tiene una población de 3915 habitantes.

It was a fantastic weekend. The Selva de Irati was well worth the wait and in good company, even better.. Era un fin de semana fantástico. La Selva de Irati merecía la pena conocer una vez en la vida. En buena compañía, mejor.

Even if we didn’t find the basajuan. Incluso si no encontramos el basajuan.

Mi Camino de Santiago (book)

In 2011, I was browsing the Valencia library and stumbled upon a random book by a Valenciano, Enrique Estivalis Rodrígo, who wrote about his Camino de Santiago, from Burgos to Santiago. It was one of the first accounts I ever read about the Camino, and it was definitely one of my inspirations to plan on doing it one day. En 2011, estaba echando un vistazo en la biblioteca de Valencia y encontré un libro al azar por un valenciano, Enrique Estivalis Rodrígo, quien escribió sobre su Camino de Santiago, desde Burgos a Santiago. Era una de las primeras cuentas del Camino que me leí, y era una inspiración para hacer planes de hacer el Camino.

I checked it out again this summer to reread it, and I enjoyed it just as much as the first time. When I read it, I thought “Wow, not very many people do this Camino thing and here is an account. So cool.” Little did I know how popular the Camino (especially the Camino Francés) actually was. Me lo llevé otra vez este verano para leerlo de nuevo, y disfruté leer la historia tanto como la primera. Cuando me leí la primera vez, pensaba “Vaya, no habrá mucha gente que hacen ese Camino y aquí es una historia. Que guay.” No sabía que el Camino era muy popular (especialmente el Camino Francés.)

It’s a typical Camino story, and it was the 2000s version of self-published. The Valencia library probably has it due to him being from the city. It was a bit sad when I found out the peregrino had died not long before I discovered the book in the library. Es una historia típica del Camino, y era la versión de los años 2000 de auto-publicación. Creo que la biblioteca de Valencia tiene una copia dado que es de la ciudad. Era triste cuando me enteré que el peregrino había muerto un poco antes de descubrí el libro en la biblioteca.

I don’t know why this book stayed with me over the years, but it formed part of my fascination with the Camino. No sé porque el libro me quedó durante los años, pero formé algo de mi fascinación del Camino.
