How do you describe the 1974 French film The Phantom of Liberty from Spanish director Luis Buñuel? ¿Cómo se describe la película francesa de 1974 El fantasma de la libertad de director español Luis Buñuel?

The film opens with the famous painting by Francisco Goya, 3 de Mayo en Madrid, about the war with Napoleon in 1808 and travels through a non-linear period, introducing us to French bourgeoisie  in the 1970s and their random lives. The characters appear unrelated, but it also seems like a stream of consciousness like James Joyce was writing the script. The nanny is telling the story of the third of may to some children, who were probably being abused, as they are given weird drawings by a creepy man. Their father is awaken at night by a rooster, a postman and an emu wandering through his bedroom. He visits an unconcerned doctor, whose nurse goes to stay at a hotel where she encounters gambling monks who pray for her sick father. Also at the hotel are a horny nephew and his virgin elderly aunt. The nephew goes to have tea and meets a dominatrix punishing her lover, and he returns to the aunt.  The nurse goes to a new town where an instructor is trying to teach a class of military policeman who would rather play pranks, and so on throughout the film, cause and effect with characters blending into each other. La película empieza con la obra famosa de Francisco Goya, 3 de Mayo en Madrid, sobre la guerra contra Napoleon en 1808 y viaje durante una periodo de tiempo que no es linear, nos presenta a personajes de la burguesía francesa de los años 1970 y sus vidas al azar. Los personajes no parecen relacionados al principio, y también parece como un corriente de conciencia como si el guionista fuera James Joyce. La niñera está contando la historia de la guerra de independencia española a algunos niños quien aceptan dibujos de un hombre extraño, que surgiere que los niños probablemente eran víctimas de abuso sexual. Su padre se despierta por la noche por un gallo, un cartero y un avestruz caminando por su habitación. Va a un médico, y al médico le importa nada. La enfermera del médico va a un hotel donde encuentra unos monjes que les gusta apostar. Los monjes rezan por su padre enfermo. También en el hotel son un sobrino cachondo y su tía mayor quien es virgen. El sobrino va a tomar te con otros huéspedes y conoce a una dominatriz quien está castigando a su sumiso. Vuelve a la tía. La enfermera va a otro pueblo donde alguien está intentando enseñar una clase de policía militar quien son muy traviesos, y sigue así durante el resto de la película, causa y efecto con personajes mezclando uno con otro.

Of course, there is that scene where people sit around the table to use the toilet and then eat in secret, instead of what is the custom around the world. Desde luego, hay la escena donde la gente se siente por la mesa para usar el baño y después comen en secreto, en lugar del costumbre de todo el mundo. 

Only Buñuel. Sólo Buñuel. 

He made the film when he was 74, and it was his penultimate film. The film is based on experiences, conversations and dreams he (and his co-writer Jean-Claude Carrière) had throughout his (their) lives. The loosely linked vignettes are metaphors of how chance influences life. Hizo la película cuando tenía 74 años, y era su penúltima película. La película tiene su base en las experencias, conversacións y sueños que Buñuel (y el otro guionista Jean-Claude Carrière también) ha(n) tenido durante su(s) vidas. Las viñetas que apenas son vinculadas son metáforas de como la oportunidad influencia la vida. 

According to Wikipedia, one of the vignettes is about a doctor trying to tell his patient about his cancer of the liver, which had happened to Buñuel personally. He later died of liver cancer in 1983. Según Wikipedia, una de las viñetas es sobre un médico intentando decir a su paciente que tiene cáncer del hígado, que le pasó a Buñuel en la vida real. Después, Buñuel se murió de cáncer del hígado en 1983. 

The cast has over forty characters, including Michel Piccoli, Adriana Asti, Julien Bertheau and Jean-Claude Brialy. The less I say about the film, the better off potential viewers will be.  Menos es más cuando hablo de la película, porque creo que es mejor verla sin saber mucho de la película.
