It’s back to 1920s Spain in the 1970 Spanish film Tristana from renowned director Luis Buñuel.  Es una vuelta a la España de los años 1920 en la película española de 1970 del director renombrado Luis Buñuel. 

After the death of her mother, a young Tristana (Catherine Deneuve) goes to live with Don Lope (Fernando Rey), a man respected in the community but with a weakness for women.  He falls for the young Tristana, and seduces her, trying to make her his while also trying to give her freedom. When she meets and falls for Horacio (Franco Nero), the two decide to run away together and leave Toledo behind. After she becomes ill and is forced to return to Toledo (and later loses her leg), Don Lope continues to try to win her over. She doesn’t feel the same, however. She continues to dream of ringing the church bells which is really his severed head…Perhaps he should stay away from open windows in winter…Después de la muerte de su madre, una joven Tristana (Catherine Deneuve) va a vivir con Don Lope (Fernando Rey), un hombre muy respetado en la comunidad pero tiene una debilidad para las mujeres. The film is a fantastic look at life in 1920s Spain. Although there were a couple of anarchism, it was a transport through time. Rural Castilla La Mancha comes alive for viewers. The film is based on the novel by Benito Peréz Galdos, and Buñuel wrote the script with Julio Alejandro. La película es una mirada fantástico de la vida cotidiana española en los años 1920. Aunque había algunas anacronismos, era una máquina de tiempo. Castilla La Mancha profunda está muy vivo para los espectadores. La película está basada en la novela de Benito Peréz Galdos, y Buñuel escribió el guión con Julio Alejandro.

Catherine Deneuve, once again, gives an amazing performance, as does Fernando Rey, who is one of the most respected actors in Spanish cinema. Lola Gaos is outstanding as the maid Saturna. Catherine Deneuve, otra vez, es genial, y también Fernando Rey, quien es uno de los actores más respetados de cine español. Lola Gaos es impresionante como la criada Saturna. 

The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Film in 1970. Buñuel said “Nothing would disgust me more, morally, than to win an Oscar.” He ended up losing, so he needn’t have worried. La película recibió una nominación para Mejor Película Extranjera en 1970. Buñuel dijo “Nada me daría más disgusto, moralmente, que ganar un Oscar.” Al final, perdió, y no había tenido que preocuparse. 

Buñuel had wanted to make the film for 20 years. He got distracted by lesser films he made in the 1950s, and then the censorship during the Franco era in Spain kept him from making it in the 1960s. The casting of French actress Deneuve and Italian actor Nero helped get the film produced. Their voices were dubbed by Spanish actors. Epoca Films, the studio behind the movie, also had to cajole the Spanish censors to allow the filming. Buñuel had to promise not to change the script at all during filming, and a mutual friend between him and Minister of Information Manuel Fraga Iribane also helped get the film past the censors. Buñuel quería hacer la película durante 20 años. Se distrajo con películas menores que hizo en los años 1950, y la censura durante la época de Franco no le permitió hacerla en los años 1960s. Tenía que dar papeles a la actriz francesa Deneuve y el actor italiano Nero para poder hacer la película. Sus voces eran dobladas por actores españoles. Epoca Films, el estudio que financió la película, también tenía que lisonjear el gobierno para permitir el rodaje. Buñuel tenía que prometer que no iba a cambiar el guión durante el rodaje. Un amigo en común entre Buñuel y el Ministro de Información Manuel Fraga Iribane también ayudó la película ser aprobada por la censura.
