The 1967 French film Belle de Jour from Spanish director Luis Buñuel is so complicated that Buñuel himself apparently said he didn’t understand the ending of his own film. La película francesa del año 1967 Belle de Jour (Bella del día) del director español Luis Buñuel es tan complicada que Buñuel dijo que ni él pudo entender el final de su propia película. 

Where do I begin? ¿Dónde empiezo? 

Séverine (Catherine Deneuve) is a bored, innocent housewife. When she hears about a local brothel from a friend, she decides to investigate and finds herself working as a prostitute after talking to Madame Anais (Geneviève Page). At first, she is frightened to be with the men and the job, but she later begins to enjoy the job, although always with an icy stare. Slowly but surely her fantasy life and her real life start to blend, and no one is sure, not even Buñuel,  if this is the “real life” or if it’s just fantasy… Séverine (Catherine Deneuve) es una ama de casa aburrida e inocente. Cuando una amiga le cuenta la historia de un burdel por la zona, decide investigarlo y después se encuentra trabajando en el burdel como una prostituta después de hablar con la Madame (Señora) Anais (Geneviève Page). Al principio, se asusta de los hombres y para hacer el trabajo, pero después empieza a disfrutar de su trabajo, aunque siempre tiene una mirada helada. Poco a poco su vida de fantasía y su vida de realidad empiezan a confundir, y nadie está seguro, ni Buñuel, si este es la “vida real” o si solo es fantasía…(letra de “Bohemian Rhapsody” en inglés). 

Her husband Pierre (Jean Sorel) is oblivious to this, but he is excited that she is starting to warm up to him more in the sack. (I love how this film is about prostitution, but the main character sleeps in a different bed than her husband as if the Hays Code were demanding it). A client, Marcel (Pierre Clémenti) begins to fall for her, and his obsession with her could lead to deadly consequences. Su marido Pierre (Jean Sorel) es inconsciente del trabajo nuevo de su mujer, pero está emocionado que está empezando a abrirse más en la cama. (Me encanta el hecho que la película se trata de prostitución, pero la protagonista duerma en una cama separada de su marido como si fuera exigido por el antiguo Código Hays). Un cliente, Marcel (Pierre Clémenti) se enamora de ella, y su obsesión de ella puede acabar con consecuencias mortales…

Many consider Belle de Jour to be Buñuel’s masterpiece. It is, for sure, one of his better films. It’s like I was rewarded for watching every. Single. One. of his Mexican-era films with this treat. Mucha gente considera Belle de Jour para ser la mejor película de Buñuel. No sé si estoy de acuerdo, pero es una de sus mejores películas, sí. Era como si me hubiera premiado por ver todas. Sus. Películas. Mexicanas. con esta película genial. 

The film is in bright, vibrant colour, and the plot is reminiscent of Pedro Almodóvar. Catherine Deneuve is brilliant as the main character. Buñuel co-wrote the script with Jean-Claude Carrière which is based on the novel with the same name by Joseph Kessel. La película es vibrante con muchos colores, y el argumento me recuerda de una película de Pedro Almodóvar. Catherine Deneuve es genial como la protagonista. Buñuel escribió el guión con Jean-Claude Carrière, y el guión es basado en la novela con el mismo nombre de Joseph Kessel. 

The film had disappeared for years and only reappeared after director Martin Scorsese campaigned for a re-release in 1995. Alfred Hitchcock was another director fan of the flick. La película desapareció durante años y sólo reapareció después del director Martin Scorsese hizo campaña para un nuevo estreno en 1995. Otro fan de la película era el director Alfred Hitchcock. 

The name is a pun on “belle de nuit”, French for a woman who works as a prostitute. El nombre tiene un doble sentido en frances con “belle de nuit”, (bella de noche), que es una manera suave para decir “prostituta”. 

It’s a film that truly should be seen to be believed. Es una pelí que tiene que verla para creerla.
