Madre mía. In 1960, Spanish director Luis Buñuel made a film, The Young One, about the deep south of the United States, exploring racism and rape culture. I’m just going to say either he was ahead of his time, or the United States has been dealing with these issues for a long time and has yet to solve them. Madre mía. En 1960, director español Luis Buñuel hizo una película, La Joven, sobre el sur de los EEUU profundo, explorando racismo y la cultura de violación. Solo voy a comentar o era muy precoz, o los EEUU llevan décadas con estos problemas y todavía no los ha resuelto. 

Traver (Bernie Hamilton) is a black jazz musician on the run after being accused of rape by a white woman. He finds himself on a Carolina island where Miller (Zachary Scott) and his deceased business partner’s granddaughter Evvie (Key Meersman) live. Evvie meets Traver and helps him, and he gives her $20. When Miller finds the money, he accuses her of being a prostitute. It should be said that Miller has a highly inappropriate relationship with Evvie. When Miller finds Traver, the two exchange racial slurs and insults until they realise that they are both vetrans. Tensions mount on the island as relationships take a turn for the worse. Traver (Bernie Hamilton) es un músico de jazz negro intentando huyer después de ser acusado de violar una mujer blanca. Se encuentra en una isla de las Carolinas donde Miller (Zachary Scott) y la nieta de su pareja de negocio (quien ha fallecido), Evvie (Key Meersman) viven. This film is uncomfortable to watch due to the themes it explores, but it is a film well worth watching due to today’s current political climate. The more things change, the more they sadly stay the same. Es una película incómoda ver dado a los temas que explora, pero es una película que vale la pena ver dado a la clima política en los EEUU. Lo más que las cosas cambien, lo más que se quedan iguales, tristemente. 

The film is based on a short story, “Travelin’ Man” by Peter Matthiessen. Buñuel adapted the screenplay with Hugo Butler. It has several names. White Trash is another name for it in the US, and in the UK, it was released as Island of Shame (which is the most Buñuelian title in my opinion.) La película tiene su base en un relato corto, “Travelin’ Man” (Hombre viajero) de Peter Matthiessen. Buñuel adaptó el guión con Hugo Butler. También es conocida en inglés como White Trash (Basura blanca) en los EEUU, y en el Reino Unido, era conocida como “Isla de vergüenza”, que es el título más de Buñuel creo yo. 

Many people on IMDB say it was a predecessor of To Kill a Mockingbird. I would say it’s an important film to see. For those English-speakers who fear subtitles, it would be a chance to see Buñuel try his hand at a English-language film.  It’s also extremely realistic and not at all surrealistic. Mucha gente en IMDB dice que era un predecesor de Matar un Ruiseñor. Yo digo que es una película importante ver. Es una oportunidad para los angloparlantes que tiene miedo de subtítulos para ver Buñuel intenta hacer una película en inglés. Es bastante de realismo y no de surrealismo.
